1. INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ARM SWING AND GROUND REACTION FORCES DURING WALKING: A CORELATION STUDY.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between arm swing and ground reaction forces that occur during restricted arm swing during walking. Methods: Twenty-seven healthy volunteers included the study (av. age: 22.59 ± 1.04). For the ground reaction forces (GRF), the Mat-Scan system (Tekscan Inc. Mass. USA) was utilized. GRF was analysed for 3 walking conditions at self selected speed; 1- both arms freely swing (FS), 2- the dominant arm swing was restricted and 3- The dominant arm was held by an arm sling (H). The first and the second peak forces (F1, F2 (kg/cm2), stance times (tstance (sec)) and maximum forces (Fmax (kg/cm2)) of dominant side foot were the interested parameters (3). After the normality test, Spearman rho's was used for the correlation. (p < 0.05) Results: There was very strong corelation between the case of freely swing and restricted arm swing for Fmax (rho: 0,94) F1 (rho: 0,95) and F2 (rho: 0,91) and strong between the case of freely swing and restricted arm swing for tstance (rho: 0,79) (Table 1). Also, very strong corelation between the case of freely swing and held arm swing for Fmax (rho: 0,92) and F1 (rho: 0,93) was found. (p < 0.05) Conclusions: The ground reaction forces and the duration of the stance phase have changed on the restricted side, depending on the state of the arm swing during walking.
