Basking sharks (Cetorhinus maximus) seasonally aggregate in coastal surface waters of the North Atlantic, providing opportunities for visual observation. While putative courtship displays have been observed, actual copulation has not been documented. Here we examine video collected by an unmanned aerial vehicle ("drone") of novel behavioral interactions between basking sharks in Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts in May 2021. The behaviors, including close following and tight concentric circling, are consistent with pre-copulatory behavior observed in other shark species. The diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) is a coastal turtle with a range from Massachusetts to Texas and is the only exclusively brackish water turtle in North America. Two populations of wild terrapins from Maryland (n=55) and Georgia (n=7) were examined and tested for potential reptile pathogens. Whole blood and a mucosal (combined oropharyngeal and cloacal) swab from each animal were evaluated by quantitative PCR for 15 potential pathogens including frog virus 3, box turtle Mycoplasmopsis, Mycoplasma agassizii, Mycoplasma testudineum, Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium, Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, tortoise intranuclear coccidia, testudinid alphaherpesvirus 2, terrapene herpesvirus 1, and terrapene adenovirus. Swabs were positive for a DNA segment 100% homologous to M. testudineum in both populations, with Maryland animals 87% (48 of 55) positive and Georgia animals 86% (6 of 7) positive. Although Mycoplasmopsis spp. are important respiratory pathogens for members of the order Testudines, none of the animals in the study showed any sign of upper respiratory disease. Our data suggest that M. testudineum may survive in non-Testudinidae turtles without causing clinical sigs of disease and suggesting appropriate precautions should be taken in facilities that house multiple species of turtles simultaneously., (© Wildlife Disease Association 2022.)

There has been an increase in the presence of alopecia among gray seals Halichoerus grypus atlantica in Massachusetts, USA. To understand the prevalence and describe the presentation of this condition, data records and photographs of 10070 gray seals from 2004-2013 were reviewed; there were sufficient data to confidently assess the presence or absence of alopecia in 2134 seals. Mild hair loss presented in multifocal patches with minimal to no skin lesions or erythema. In severe cases, alopecia was concentrated over the dorsal head, neck, and shoulders and extended down the ventrum, affecting >50% of the body. Associated skin lesions and erythema were often present. Alopecia was documented in 7.1% of the surveyed seals, and was centered in Nantucket. Alopecia was more prevalent in stranded/sighted animals in spring and summer, with 81% of cases documented from April to July. There was no sex bias, and weanlings were the most affected age class (38%). The etiology for alopecia in Massachusetts gray seals is unknown. Possible causes of alopecia in wildlife are infectious disease, nutritional deficiencies, endocrinopathies, or chronic physiologic stress. High population density around Nantucket may escalate intraspecific competition for resources, which may indirectly lead to stress-induced immunosuppression or nutritional deficiencies. Crowded haul-out sites increase the opportunity for disease transmission. The weanling age class may be prone to alopecia due to naïve immune systems and inexperienced foraging capabilities. Diagnostic sample collection from gray seals will be required to characterize the etiology, pathogenesis, and significance of alopecia in this population.

Necropsy reports for 28 stranded, cold-stunned Kemp's ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys kempii) that died between 2001 and 2006 were reviewed retrospectively. Gross and microscopic lesions were compiled to describe the pathologic and parasitologic findings in turtles that were found freshly dead on the beach or that died within 48 hr of stranding. Anatomic lesions of varying severity were identified in each of the examined turtles and were identified in tissues of the alimentary, respiratory, integumentary, nervous and sensory, and urogenital systems in order of decreasing frequency. Necrotizing enterocolitis and bacterial or fungal pneumonia were the most frequently encountered lesions that were considered clinically significant. Parasites and parasitic lesions were identified primarily in tissues of the alimentary system and included intestinal cestodiasis and parasitic granulomas containing larval cestodes or nematodes. Postlarval cestodes were also found in the coelom of two turtles. In many cases, the extent and severity of lesions were judged to be insufficient to have solely caused mortality, suggesting that additional factors such as metabolic, respiratory, and electrolyte derangements; hypothermia; and drowning may be important proximate causes of death in cold-stunned turtles. Results of this study provide insight into pathologic conditions that may be of clinical relevance to rehabilitation efforts for cold-stunned sea turtles.

The Massachusetts population of the northern red-bellied cooter (Pseudemys rubriventris) is listed as federally endangered due to its extremely restricted geographic range and low population. A captive rearing program has been used since 1984 to augment the population. Blood from 30 juvenile specimens from three rearing institutions was collected prior to release, and hematologic and plasma biochemical data were analyzed. Results were generally consistent with previously published data for other species of the family Emydidae. Basophils were the most numerous type of leucocyte. Results for some values varied significantly between institutions, possibly due to unrecognized differences in husbandry at each facility.
