Background: Numerous studies have demonstrated an association between characteristics of the school environment and the likelihood of school violence. However, little is known about the relative importance of various characteristics of the school environment or their differential impact on multiple violence outcomes. Methods: Primarily African-American students (n = 27) from Baltimore City high schools participated in concept mapping sessions, which produced interpretable maps of the school environment's contribution to school violence. Participants generated statements about their school environment's influence on school violence and, with the assistance of quantitative methods, grouped these statements according to their similarity. Participants provided information about the importance of each of these statements for the initiation, cessation, and severity of the violence that occurs at school. Results: More than half of the 132 statements generated by students were rated as school environment characteristics highly important for the initiation, cessation, and/or severity of school violence. Participants identified students' own actions, expectations for disruptive behavior, and the environment outside the school as the characteristics most important for the initiation and increased severity of violence that occurs in school. Participants had a more difficult time identifying school environment characteristics important for the cessation of school violence. Conclusion: This study provides support from students for the role of the school environment in school violence prevention, particularly in preventing the initiation and reducing the severity of school violence. Schools can utilize the information presented in this article to begin discussions with students and staff about prioritizing school environment changes to reduce school violence. Youth violence is a significant public health problem. Although the relationship between neighborhood-level factors and urban youth violence is recognized, the specific mechanisms of this relationship are often unclear. Prominent neighborhood individuals were identified within four select low-income urban neighborhoods in Baltimore City. In-depth interviews were conducted to explore these individuals' perceptions of the relationship between social and structural neighborhood-level factors and urban youth violence. Employment opportunities, local businesses, trash management, vacant housing, and street lighting were perceived as important neighborhood factors influencing young people's experiences. The relationship between these neighborhood characteristics and the local illicit drug market and youth violence is highlighted. Results provide an enhanced understanding of the importance of using a participatory-based research approach and the mechanisms of the relationship between neighborhood-level factors and youth violence. Both are critical components in designing and implementing multilevel youth violence prevention efforts.

The assessment of a person's quality of life as it relates to health, HIV status and intimate partner violence (IPV) among women has been limited in its scope of investigation. Consequently, little is known about the adjusted and combined effects of IPV and HIV on women's health status and QOL. 445 women (188 HIV + 257 HIV -) residing in an urban low income area were interviewed regarding current IPV experiences (no IPV, IPV more than 1 year ago, IPV in last year), HIV status (positive and negative), use of illicit drugs, and presence of instrumental social support. Health-related QOL (HRQOL) was measured using the MOS-HIV. Stratified bivariate analyses demonstrate that living with HIV or having experienced IPV in the past year was significantly associated with poorer levels of HRQOL. Multiple logistic regression models indicate a robust negative relationship between the experience of IPV in the past year, living with HIV, use of illicit drugs and a protective effect of social support on women's reported HRQOL. The results of the bivariate and multivariate analyses provide evidence that there are independent and adjusted detrimental associations of the experience of IPV and living with HIV with women's HRQOL. As HRQOL is a good indicator of physical and mental health, these findings should alert health care and other service providers to their responsibility to screen and treat women experiencing intimate partner violence and living with HIV. Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV), HIV/AIDS, and substance use are described as the SAVA "syndemic" among low-income urban women because of their intersecting and synergistic presence in these women's lives. Depressive symptoms are significantly associated with these SAVA factors and although social support is potentially protective for depression, little is understood about its impact on depression associated with the SAVA syndemic., Methods: This paper investigates how women living with SAVA experience and describe depressive symptoms, and examines how the types of social support they access impact their experiences of SAVA and depressive symptoms. Qualitative, in-depth interviews were conducted with 24 HIV-positive, low-income, urban women who experienced IPV and used cocaine or heroin in their lifetime. Interviews were analyzed based on study aims, principles of thematic content analysis, and grounded theory., Results: Women identified multiple SAVA factors as catalysts for depression and noted their synergistic effect on depressive symptoms, which were both a trigger for and a result of drug use. Women accessed varying sources of social support to address their SAVA factors and associated symptoms of depression, relying on informal sources for instrumental support related to IPV and formal sources for support related to HIV, drug use, and depression., Conclusions: These findings have important implications for health providers who serve SAVA-affected women, and suggest that comprehensively addressing all SAVA factors (and IPV in particular) and improving their access to quality social support at critical times is essential to improve their mental health., (Copyright © 2014 Jacobs Institute of Women's Health. Background: Engaging youth and incorporating their unique expertise into the research process is important when addressing issues related to their health. Visual Voices is an arts-based participatory data collection method designed to work together with young people and communities to collaboratively elicit, examine, and celebrate the perspectives of youth., Objectives: To present a process for using the creative arts with young people as a participatory data collection method and to give examples of their perspectives on safety and violence., Methods: Using the creative arts, this study examined and illustrates the perspectives of how community factors influence safety and violence. Visual Voices was conducted with a total of 22 African-American youth in two urban neighborhoods. This method included creative arts-based writing, drawing, and painting activities designed to yield culturally relevant data generated and explored by youth. Qualitative data were captured through the creative content of writings, drawings, and paintings created by the youths as well as transcripts from audio recorded group discussion. Data was analyzed for thematic content and triangulated across traditional and nontraditional mediums. Findings were interpreted with participants and shared publicly for further reflection and utilization., Conclusion: The youth participants identified a range of issues related to community factors, community safety, and violence. Such topics included the role of schools and social networks within the community as safe places and corner stores and abandoned houses as unsafe places. Visual Voices is a creative research method that provides a unique opportunity for youth to generate a range of ideas through access to the multiple creative methods provided. It is an innovative process that generates rich and valuable data about topics of interest and the lived experiences of young community members.

Objectives: We compared the association between advancing maternal age and risk of preterm delivery across 4 groups (Black smokers, Black nonsmokers, White smokers, White nonsmokers) and within the context of neighborhood deprivation levels., Methods: We obtained data from linked census and birth records for singletons (n = 182 938) delivered by women aged 20 to 39 years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Baltimore, Maryland; 16 Michigan cities; 3 Maryland counties; and 2 North Carolina counties. Results from area-specific multilevel logistic regression models were combined to obtain pooled estimates of relations between maternal age and risk of preterm delivery. We repeated the models after categorizing women by neighborhood deprivation level (low, medium, and high)., Results: Among multiparous women, there was a significant age-related increase in preterm delivery in 3 of the 4 groups. The adjusted odds ratio per 5-year age increase was 1.31 in Black smokers, 1.11 in Black nonsmokers, and 1.16 in White smokers. In each group, the odds ratio increased as neighborhood deprivation increased., Conclusions: These results support the "weathering" hypothesis, suggesting that Black women, women with high-risk behaviors, and women living in high-deprivation neighborhoods may develop "accelerated aging" that increases preterm delivery risk.

Disparities in preterm birth by race and ethnic group have been demonstrated in the United States. Recent research has focused on the impact of neighborhood context on racial disparities in pregnancy outcomes. The authors utilized vital-record birth certificate data and US Census data from eight geographic areas in four states (Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania) to examine the relation between neighborhood deprivation and preterm birth among non-Hispanic White and Black women. The years covered by the data varied by site and ranged from 1995 to 2001. Results were adjusted for maternal age and education, and specific attention was paid to racial and geographic differences in the relation between neighborhood deprivation and preterm birth. Preterm birth rates were higher for non-Hispanic Blacks (10.42-15.97%) than for non-Hispanic Whites (5.77-9.13%), and neighborhood deprivation index values varied substantially across the eight areas. A significant association was found between neighborhood deprivation and risk of preterm birth; for the first quintile of the deprivation index versus the fifth, the adjusted summary odds ratio was 1.57 (95% confidence interval: 1.41, 1.74) for non-Hispanic Whites and 1.15 (95% confidence interval: 1.08, 1.23) for non-Hispanic Blacks. In this study, deprivation at the neighborhood level was significantly associated with increased risk of preterm birth among both non-Hispanic White women and non-Hispanic Black women.
