This article discusses the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court concerning a special education case from Maryland, Schaffer v. Weast, as of January 2006. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires states, through local districts, to identify and evaluate disabled children. Once a disabled child is identified, the school district assembles a team to develop an individualized education program appropriate to meet the child's needs. The law gives parents a direct role in developing programs.
