This study reported the results of Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) analyses on 13 competing structural models on the inter-relationships among academic achievement and student- and course-related attributes. The samples were Malaysian pre-university students enrolled in two STEM courses (biology, n = 326; mathematics, n = 339; biology only, n = 92; mathematics only, n = 105; biology and mathematics, n = 234). For both courses, interdisciplinary cross-validation was observed for four models which hypothesized that current academic achievement could be predicted (1) directly by prior academic achievement (high school grades) and student approaches to learning (SAL), and (2) directly and/or indirectly by personality, intrinsic motivation and course experience (CE). For at least one course, all constructs (except intrinsic motivation, clear goals and standards, openness and conscientiousness) significantly and directly predicted current academic achievement. The strongest predictor of current academic achievement was prior (high school) academic achievement, with the largest effect sizes, followed by SAL. Current academic achievement was significantly and positively predicted by all CE constructs (except clear goals and standards) for only mathematics, with moderate and large effect sizes. Only one personality construct (neuroticism) significantly and moderately predicted current academic achievement (biology). SAL partially mediated relationships between current academic achievement with workload appropriateness, assessment for understanding and neuroticism for at least one course. Generally, the strongest predictors of SAL were assessment for understanding, workload appropriateness and intrinsic motivation. Multigroup invariance analysis revealed differences in five hypothesized paths, attributable almost entirely to significant paths found in mathematics but not biology (prior [high school] to current academic achievement, conscientiousness to surface approach to learning, intrinsic motivation to deep and surface approaches to learning). Therefore, this study is the first to report course-nuanced differences in the presence of reduced interpersonal differences. The implications of this study is that, besides the importance of prior high academic achievement which might not be within educators' control, factors in the teaching--learning ecosystem within educators' control which influence current academic achievement are strongly mediated by SAL, which is itself influenced most by assessment, workload and intrinsic motivation.

This study assessed the morphology and chemical composition of coir coconut husk carbon fiber, as well as the impact of fiber diameters on the physical and mechanical properties of polylactic acid composites. Researchers are studying polylactide acid, a biodegradable material. This eco-friendly material's excellent features, generated from sustainable and renewable sources, have drawn many people. Malaysia's high coconut fiber output made coir husk a popular commodity. Coconut fibers are lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. Alkaline treatment eliminates hemicellulose, oil, wax, and other contaminants from coir fibers and removes lignin. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy were used to examine the treated coconut fibers' chemical modification analysis and morphology. Coconut coir husk was carbonized to produce carbon fiber using a furnace operated at 300°C for 2 hours. Fiber and polylactic acid were mixed in different fiber sizes (0, 53 µm, 75 µm, and 212 µm) via extrusion and injection processing techniques. The results showed that the alkali treatment reduced the hydroxyl (-OH) group and separated the area from the carbonyl (C=O) group of coconut coir husk, which changed the filler's hydrophilicity. The fiber size of 212 µm was discovered to have the highest tensile and flexural strength values. According to testing, the modified material structure had a better surface fill-matrix bond. Thus, generalized fiber sizing and characterization methods were developed. The use of a reflector can increase the solar radiation on the photovoltaic module (PV) surface, whereby the energy output can be improved. However, the economic feasibility may need to be considered too. This study is conducted, for the first time, due to the lack of studies regarding the economic feasibility assessment of implementing reflectors under the Malaysian meteorological conditions. The outcome will give information about the suitability for implementing a PV reflector in Malaysia through an experimental setup at a sewage treatment site, for two months in 2022. The Malaysian meteorological data, which include daily solar radiation, ambient temperature and wind velocity, were collected to study the output energy, efficiency and the economic perspective of a PV. In February 2022, the PV was operating without a reflector and the averaged values for the monthly solar radiation, ambient temperature and wind velocity were 539.9 MJ/m2, 28.4 °C and 2.2 m/s, respectively, which resulted in an output energy of 106.43 kWh. On the other hand, for April 2022, the PV was operating with a reflector. With the respective averaged input parameters 544.98 MJ/m2, 28.9 °C and 1.51 m/s, the output energy was 121.94 kWh. It is thus shown that the PV with a reflector increases the PV's output energy by 14.57%. Also, it is shown that the cost-effective factor value is 0.955 which means that the PV reflector is economically feasible to be implemented under the Malaysian meteorological conditions. Hence, extensive research should be conducted to improve the performance of PV reflectors. The findings of this paper maybe useful for researchers and/or manufacturers of PV reflectors. Porous asphalt has excellent permeability and larger air voids. Due to the low stability strength of asphalt binder with aggregates, Malaysia uses porous asphalt roads for lightweight vehicle road transportation. Numerous studies indicate utilizing Recycled High-Density Polyethylene in porous asphalt road surface. As a result, it was utilised as an additional binder material to enhance the asphalt binder. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the stability of modified porous asphalt samples and evaluate the optimum percentage of HDPE plastic waste from 3%, 6% and 9%. The aggregates, asphalt properties, Marshall Parameters and waster absorption test are in comply with JKR Standard and PWD 2008. At 3% of plastic addition has improved the stability of porous asphalt specimens. Adding plastic waste as a binder helps strengthen asphalt binding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intercultural communication is the process of exchanging, negotiating, and mediating cultural differences between people from different cultural backgrounds, encompassing language, non-verbal gestures, and spatial relationships. Research on intercultural communication involving Japanese individuals has mainly focused on comparisons between Japanese and Westerners, particularly Americans. As Japan plays a significant role in the global business environment, foreign businesspersons working with Japanese companies may encounter communication gaps due to cultural values, assumptions, business customs, and language differences. In Malaysia, where there are several Japanese companies employing many Malaysians, there is a strong interest in learning the Japanese language and culture. Malaysians are impressed with the work culture of Japanese companies and seek to learn from them, which enhances their chances of working in Japanese companies, both in Malaysia and Japan. Effective communication between Japanese employers and Malaysian employees is crucial for learning from people of different cultures. To gain deeper insights into the intercultural communication in Japanese corporations working environment, this study examines the situations and challenges faced by Japanese employers working with Malaysian employees, and vice versa. The participants consist of Japanese employers and Malaysian employees who interact with Japanese employers in their day-to-day jobs. A qualitative study using focus groups was adopted, and the responses were analyzed using thematic analysis, leading to the emergence of three main themes: working culture, communication ability, and cultural differences. Purpose: The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) classified autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by difficulties with socialisation and communication, and with restricted interests and repetitive behaviour. The wide range of symptom types and severity of the disorder in children with ASD can range from the need for support to the need for substantial support, and sometimes even very substantial support. This paper examines an augmented reality toy application, AR Toys, which supports social communication of children with ASD, and reports on how the application was used in school classrooms. Method: AR Toys was evaluated by seven children in an Autism Centre in Melaka, Malaysia. The analysis focused entirely on observation of the interactions between children and teachers at the school. Results: It was found that AR Toys were able to: (1) motivate children with ASD on adaptive language; (2) model expressive language to identify a child's emotion; and (3) promote pretend play on learning emotion in classroom activities. This gives children with ASD more opportunities to communicate among peers and interact with teachers at school. Conclusion: Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research using AR technologies shows positive feedback in supporting children with ASD in recognising emotions that facilitate their social communication development, leading to better understanding, communication and engagement between teachers and children. Background: The complexities of the workplace environment in the downstream oil and gas industry contain several safety-risk factors. In particular, instituting stringent safety standards and management procedures are considered insufficient to address workplace safety risks. Most accident cases attribute to unsafe actions and human behaviors on the job, which raises serious concerns for safety professionals from physical to psychological particularly when the world is facing a life-threatening Pandemic situation, i.e., COVID-19. It is imperative to re-examine the safety management of facilities and employees' well-being in the downstream oil and gas production sector to establish a sustainable governance system. Understanding the inherent factors better that contribute to safety behavior management could significantly improve workplace safety features. Objective: This study investigates employees' safety behavior management model for the downstream oil and gas industry to consolidate the safety, health and wellbeing of employees in times of COVID-19. Methods: Nominal Group Technique (NGT) was first employed to screen primary behavioral factors from 10 workplace health and safety experts from Malaysia's downstream oil and gas industry. Consequently, 18 significant factors were identified for further inquiry. Next, the interpretive structural modeling technique was used to ascertain the complex interrelationships between these factors and proposed a Safety Behavioral Management Model for cleaner production. Results: This model shows that management commitment, employee knowledge and training, leadership, and regulations contribute significantly to several latent factors. Our findings support the Social Cognitive Theory, where employees, their environment, and their behaviors are related reciprocally. Conclusion: It is postulated that identifying safety factors and utilizing the proposed model guides various stakeholder groups in this industry, including practitioners and policymakers, for achieving long-term sustainability. Fruit bats are important pollinators for plants and play important ecological functions and services in the tropical rain forest. Fruit bats are considered more important for the ecological rehabilitation and health of the plant community on islands as other pollinators may not be able to fly across open sea and reach the island. This study was conducted to determine the diversity of fruit bats in three contrasting Terengganu offshore islands, namely, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Bidong, and Pulau Redang. A total of 40 individuals of four species were captured using 10 mist nets during the 180 mist-net night sampling period from June 27, 2019 until February 29, 2020. Pulau Bidong had the highest number of bats captured (22), followed by Pulau Redang (18) and Pulau Perhentian (0). The most frequently captured species was Cynopterus brachyotis in both islands. No yield in Pulau Perhentian may be caused by tourism activity, seasonal movement following flowering and fruiting trees, or inadequate sampling effort in multiple sites. Pigmentation disorder has been observed in many vertebrate taxa. However, the occurrence of albinism in bats is a rare phenomenon observed only in 6.4% of the total bat species in the world. Besides, most of the records are from the South American countries and less recorded in Asia. This study describes the first record of an albino adult short-nosed fruit male bat (Cynopterus brachyotis) that was captured in Pulau Redang, Malaysia. The bat displays complete albino characteristics, and the white fur coloration does not represent a new color form for the species or a cryptic species. Based on our knowledge, this adult albino C. brachyotis is the second albino bat reported in the country, and the first recorded in off-coast island of Peninsular Malaysia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The tropical rain forest of Malaysia is a biodiversity hotspot based on both plant and animal diversity. Due to the lack of information about the species distribution and abundance, a study was conducted at Tanjung Bewah,Tasik Kenyir, with the aim to assess the presence of anurans, reptiles, birds and bats. The assessment used pitfall traps, harp traps, mist-netting and active searching techniques. A total of 395 individuals was either observed or caught and identified belonging to 12 species of herpetofauna, 24 species of birds and 15 species of bats. Polypedates leucomystax, Pycnonotus erythropthalmus and Rhinolophus stheno are the most abundant species of frog, bird and mammal respectively. This study provides important information on local distribution and relative abundance of recorded species which is vital in maintaining species richness of the area and to enhance the ecotourism activities around Tasik Kenyir. Data generated from this study suggest that various ecosystems are the main determinant of faunal diversity and their distributions in Tanjung Bewah. This information can be used by policy makers, planners and local enforcement agencies including the Department of Wildlife and National Park Peninsular Malaysia, Department of Forestry and Central Terengganu Development Authority (KETENGAH) to design a long-term strategic conservation action plan as guidelines for future sustainable eco-tourism projects. Mangrove health is very important for the ecosystem to survive the challenges and threats due to climate change and anthropogenic pressures. However, unhealthy mangroves due to pathogenic fungi causing diseases may demote the survival rate of younger plants to grow and information on the status of foliar disease incidence is limited. This study aimed 1) to observe the foliar disease symptoms that occurred on Rhizophora apiculata and Avicennia marina and 2) to identify the fungi isolated from the symptomatic leaves. Samples were collected from the mangrove area located in Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) campus, along the South China Sea. All isolates were identified based on their morphological characteristics. A total of five foliar disease symptoms were observed namely black leaf spot, grey leaf spot, leaf rot, sunken leaf blight, and anthracnose. Rhizophora apiculata has a greater number of leaf spots than A. marina. Four genera of fungi; Pestalotiopsis sp., Curvularia sp., Colletotrichum sp. and Rhizopus sp. were successfully isolated from symptomatic leaves where the most dominant was Pestalotiopsis sp. to both mangrove species. This finding highlights the need to obtain the status of foliar diseases and their impact on the resilience of mangroves in Malaysia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An assessment on water quality and microbial contamination was carried out along Langat River, Selangor, Malaysia for every two months in 2016. Sampling site covers the entire trajectory along Langat River; one upstream point, four midstream points and one downstream point. Physiochemical parameters that were measured includes dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solid (TSS), ammoniacal nitrogen (AN) and pH according to the Standard Method of American Public Health Association 2005 (APHA 2005). Total coliform and Escherichia coli counts was determined using most probable number (MPN) method. Based on all parameter analysed, site P20 representing the midstream location with effluent discharge showed to be the most polluted compared to other stations. Out of six parameters, P20 recorded high concentration for four parameters; DO (0.52 mg/L), BOD (38.7 mg/L), COD (56 mg/L) and AN (10.97 mg/L). As for TSS, P25 showed highest concentration (522 mg/L) while lowest pH recorded at P5 (pH=5.05). P1 station located in upstream Langat river showed low concentration of all parameter analysed; BOD (0.1 mg/L), COD (0.2 mg/L), AN (0.1 mg/L), pH (8.47), TSS (0 mg/L) and DO (0.04 mg/L). Based on our calculation on WQI for Langat river, P1 (upstream) as Class I meanwhile other station located in midstream and downstream were categorised as Class II and III. A total of 386 long-tailed macaques (M. fascicularis) from 17 populations in Malaysia was analysed using eight polymorphic microsatellite loci on a microfluidic-based platform (Agilent DNA 1000 Chips on the Agilent 2100 bioanalyzer) to identify and evaluate the genetic polymorphism and population structure. The microfluidic-based chip platform provides simple, reliable and cost effective approach for microsatellite studies. Genetic diversity estimates showed that the Peninsular Malaysian populations are slightly more diverse than their Bornean conspecifics. Furthermore, weak population structuring among the peninsula populations suggest that they comprise of genetically contiguous populations. The Sarawak and Labuan populations were differentiated from the peninsula populations except for the Sabah population which is due to the low sample number from the latter. Interestingly, no matching genotype was found among all samples indicating that the loci set can be used for individual identification of M. fascicularis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work presents the characterization of selected bioactive compounds of local herbs through their photonic spectrum. A Shimadzu spectrophotometer was used to map bioactive compounds extracted from Andrographis paniculata, Ficus deltoidea, Orthosiphon stamineus and Centella asiatica. Dominant peaks and repeatability were the determinant parameters in this study. Absorbance peaks of bioactive compounds were calibrated against respective standardized chemicals obtained from reputable suppliers. The results obtained indicated that absorbance peaks from different bioactive compounds could be identified by photonic spectrum. Most bioactive markers were detected within the wavelength range of 200 nm to 350 nm, using a Deuterium (190 nm to 450 nm) light source and corresponding refraction grating. A mathematical relationship of concentration versus absorbance at different wavelengths for selected bioactive compounds were identified. The significance of the photonic characterization of these phytochemicals forms the basis for a mathematical model in a decision support system of a proposed mobile sensor prototype development. Laminated rubber-metal spring is a new challenging research because previously, it is known as s rubber bearing and its application confined to the field of civil engineering. With the creation of this research, they may applied to mechanical engineering because it was believed could reduce the level of vibration in the car engine system. This paper presents the development of laminated rubber-metal spring which is the key ingredient is standard Malaysia rubber constant viscosity - 60. There are several steps involved to develop the product by different number of degree of freedom and it is discussed in details. Many standard are adopted from open literature and it need to be followed every single step to make this product more reliable and trustworthy data for presentation and future analysis. Total rainfall accumulation, as well as convective and stratiform rainfall rate data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite sensors have been used to derive the thunderstorm ratio and one-minute rainfall rates, R0.01, for 57 stations in Malaysia for exceedance probabilities of 0.001-1% for an average year, for the period 1998-2010. The results of the rain accumulations from the TRMM satellite were validated with the data collected from different ground data sources from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) global summary of the day (1949-2010), Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) (1986-2010), and NASA (1950-1999). The correlation coefficient and the average bias error between TRMM and GPCC for Malaysia were found to be 0.79-0.89 and ±50 mm, respectively. The deduced one-minute rainfall rates correlated fairly well with those obtained from the previous work carried out in Malaysia, with correlation coefficients of 0.7 in all the 57 locations. The inferred mean annual one-minute rainfall rates were found to be highest in the eastern Malaysia, with values between 84.7 and 153.9 mmh-1 for 0.01% exceedance, and in western Malaysia with values between 81.8 and 143.8 mmh-1. The present results will be useful for satellite rain attenuation modeling in tropical and subtropical stations around the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this article is to construct-validate an instrument of value-based performance excellence measurement for higher education institution (HEI) in Malaysia. The HEI performance is measured using 6 value indicators of leadership, culture, productivity, employee, stakeholders and overall performance. 1,100 questionnaires were distributed and 275 questionnaires were used for analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) approach was deployed by using analysis of moment structures software. The results for the hypothesised CFA model revealed the fit statistics of CFI = 0.944, TLI = 0.939 and RMSEA = 0.075. In conclusion, the CFA model fitted the data well. Implications of the study was significant to HEI to consider and adapt the value-based assessment approach in university assessment for total excellence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nuclear microsatellite analysis of Cynopterus was aimed at characterising the microsatellite genotypes and the population structure of this genus especially in the large form of C. brachyotis and the small form of C. brachyotis. Nine pairs of existing microsatellite primers isolated from Indian C. sphinx were used. A total of 51 alleles and 97 genotypes were documented from four forms of Cynopterus. Genetic variations revealed from AMOVA analysis showed that there was low genetic variation among the four forms. The interspecies Global AMOVA comparison analysis showed that the genetic variation between the large and small forms of C. brachyotis was the lowest among interspecies comparisons. This resulted in low genetic structure in the UPGMA tree, and species boundary of each form was not clearly defined. This might due to the microsatellite primers that were isolated from Indian C. sphinx being low in sensitivity to detect variations in Malaysian cynopterans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study concerning the rain specific attenuation for the forecast of satellite propagation in Malaysia. The study considered the empirical conclusion of the power law coefficients that authorize calculation of the specific attenuation in decibel/kilometer from the knowledge of the rain rate in millimeters per hour. Data acquired from USM, Nibong Tebal have been utilized to conduct the empirical procedure assessment of rain specific attenuation. The output demonstrated that the USM data vary from ITU-R predicted value.

Cytology is a reliable and minimally invasive method of obtaining tissues for diagnosis. It is a rapid method to be used for differentiating inflammatory from neoplastic disease. Inflammation is easily differentiated from neoplasia based on the presence of inflammatory cells. Ulcerative neoplasm is always secondarily infected by bacteria, and thus inflammatory cells could also be observed. Cytologically, neoplastic cells are classified into three major categories based on certain common cytological features (Meinkoth et a!., 2008), namely round, epithelial, and mesenchymal cells (Meinkoth eta!., 2008). Cytological images and specific features of neoplastic lesions in dogs from cytology smear, which were obtained from the Veterinary Haematology and Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), were illustrated and briefly described. Round cell tumour was identified as round and discrete neoplastic cells with specific cytoplasmic features, whereas epithelial tumour was identified as clusters of neoplastic cells with closed cytoplasmic attachment, and mesenchymal tumour was identified as spindle neoplastic cells with indistinct cytoplasmic border. Small islands groundwater are often exposed to heavy pumpings as a result of high demand for freshwater consumption. Intensive exploitation of groundwater from Manukan Island’s aquifer has disturbed the natural equilibrium between fresh and saline water, and has resulted increase the groundwater salinity and leap to the hydrochemical complexities of freshwater–seawater contact. An attempt was made to identify the hydrochemical processes that accompany current intrusion of seawater using ionic changes and saturation indices. It was observed that the mixing between freshwater–seawater created diversity in geochemical processes of the Manukan Island’s aquifer and altered the freshwater and seawater mixture away from the theoretical composition line. Fourteen species of the Malaysian fruit bats (Pteropodidae) were used in this DNA taxonomy using 1,334bp of the 12S ribosomal RNA (rRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA) valine and 16S rRNA gene segments. Previous studies using DNA found contradictions between morphology and molecular data in inferring the phylogeny of the fruit bats proposed by Andersen (1912). Our phylogenetic analysis using the neighbor-joining and the maximum parsimony methods did not support the monophyly of the subfamily Macroglossinae and the cynopterine group of the subfamily Pteropodinae as proposed by classical taxonomists. This is congruent with previous molecular studies. Here, we provide the first registered 12S rRNA, tRNA valine and 16S rRNA sequence records for Dyacopterus spadiceus in the GenBank database. Background.Alteration of the tumor suppressor gene p53 is considered to be a critical step in the development of human cancer. Changes in this gene have been detected in a wide range of human tumours, including gliomas. In glioma, the presence of p53 gene alterations has been associated with worse prognosis.Methods.Forty-seven Malaysian adult glioma patients of the Malay race were prospectively studied over a period of 3 years where the presence of p53 mutation using cold-SSCP method and their clinical and paraclinical response were correlated.Findings.Among these glioma patients, p53 mutations were detected in 12 tumors, an incidence rate of 25.5%. Mutations were found in 2 patients of grade II, and 5 patients both in grade III and grade IV. The sequencing results revealed the presence of base-substitutions (7) (58.3%) and frameshifts mutations (5) (41.7%). Of the base-substitutions, 57.1% were transversions and 42.9% were transitions.Interpretation.Our analysis shows that 3 factors were associated with p53 mutations i.e. grade, site and consistency of tumour using univariate analysis although multivariate analysis revealed no positive on predictors of mutation. Optimisation plays a key role in the application of machine learning in the spatial prediction of landslides. The common practice in optimising landslide prediction models is to search for optimal/suboptimal hyperparameter values in a number of predetermined hyperparameter configurations based on an objective function, i.e., k-fold cross-validation accuracy. However, the overhead of hyperparameter optimisation can be prohibitive, especially for computationally expensive algorithms. This paper introduces an optimisation approach based on meta-learning for the spatial prediction of landslides. The proposed approach is tested in a dense tropical forested area of Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. Instead of optimising prediction models with a large number of hyperparameter configurations, the proposed approach begins with promising configurations based on several basic and statistical meta-features. The proposed meta-learning approach was tested based on Bayesian optimisation as a hyperparameter tuning algorithm and random forest (RF) as a prediction model. The spatial database was established with a total of 63 historical landslides and 15 conditioning factors. Three RF models were constructed based on (1) default parameters as suggested by the sklearn library, (2) parameters suggested by the Bayesian optimisation (BO), and (3) parameters suggested by the proposed meta-learning approach (BO-ML). Based on five-fold cross-validation accuracy, the Bayesian method achieved the best performance for both the training (0.810) and test (0.802) datasets. The meta-learning approach achieved slightly lower accuracies than the Bayesian method for the training (0.769) and test (0.800) datasets. Similarly, based on F1-score and area under the receiving operating characteristic curves (AUROC), the models with optimised parameters either by the Bayesian or meta-learning methods produced more accurate landslide susceptibility assessment than the model with the default parameters. In the present approach, instead of learning from scratch, the meta-learning would begin with hyperparameter configurations optimal for the most similar previous datasets, which can be considerably helpful and time-saving for landslide modelings. Zero-shot learning (ZSL) is an approach to classify objects unseen during the training phase and shown to be useful for real-world applications, especially when there is a lack of sufficient training data. Only a limited amount of works has been carried out on ZSL, especially in the field of remote sensing. This research investigates the use of a convolutional neural network (CNN) as a feature extraction and classification method for land cover mapping using high-resolution orthophotos. In the feature extraction phase, we used a CNN model with a single convolutional layer to extract discriminative features. In the second phase, we used class attributes learned from the Word2Vec model (pre-trained by Google News) to train a second CNN model that performed class signature prediction by using both the features extracted by the first CNN and class attributes during training and only the features during prediction. We trained and tested our models on datasets collected over two subareas in the Cameron Highlands (training dataset, first test dataset) and Ipoh (second test dataset) in Malaysia. Several experiments have been conducted on the feature extraction and classification models regarding the main parameters, such as the network's layers and depth, number of filters, and the impact of Gaussian noise. As a result, the best models were selected using various accuracy metrics such as top-k categorical accuracy for k = [1,2,3], Recall, Precision, and F1-score. The best model for feature extraction achieved 0.953 F1-score, 0.941 precision, 0.882 recall for the training dataset and 0.904 F1-score, 0.869 precision, 0.949 recall for the first test dataset, and 0.898 F1-score, 0.870 precision, 0.838 recall for the second test dataset. The best model for classification achieved an average of 0.778 top-one, 0.890 top-two and 0.942 top-three accuracy, 0.798 F1-score, 0.766 recall and 0.838 precision for the first test dataset and 0.737 top-one, 0.906 top-two, 0.924 top-three, 0.729 F1-score, 0.676 recall and 0.790 precision for the second test dataset. Conservative peak flood discharge estimation methods such as the rational method do not take into account the soil infiltration of the precipitation, thus leading to inaccurate estimations of peak discharges during storm events. The accuracy of estimated peak flood discharge is crucial in designing a drainage system that has the capacity to channel runoffs during a storm event, especially cloudbursts and in the analysis of flood prevention and mitigation. The aim of this study was to model the peak flood discharges of each sub-watershed in Selangor using a geographic information system (GIS). The geospatial modelling integrated the watershed terrain model, the developed Soil Conservation Service Curve Cumber (SCS-CN) and precipitation to develop an equation for estimation of peak flood discharge. Hydrological Engineering Center-Hydrological Modeling System (HEC-HMS) was used again to simulate the rainfall-runoff based on the Clark-unit hydrograph to validate the modelled estimation of peak flood discharge. The estimated peak flood discharge showed a coefficient of determination, r2 of 0.9445, when compared with the runoff simulation of the Clark-unit hydrograph. Both the results of the geospatial modelling and the developed equation suggest that the peak flood discharge of a sub-watershed during a storm event has a positive relationship with the watershed area, precipitation and Curve Number (CN), which takes into account the soil bulk density and land-use of the studied area, Selangor in Malaysia. The findings of the study present a comparable and holistic approach to the estimation of peak flood discharge in a watershed which can be in the absence of a hydrodynamic simulation model. Background: GLOBOCAN12 recently reported high cancer mortality in Malaysia, a developing country, suggesting its cancer care is under-performing. Methods: All women with breast cancer treated at a large cancer centre between 2008 and 2012 were enrolled for this observational cohort study. Patients enrolled from 2011 were also prospectively followed up for 12months after diagnosis to assess their care performance. The performance metrics were from QOPI, ASCO-NCCN, and local guidelines. Mortality outcome was ascertained through record linkage with the national death register and independently verified. Findings: One hundred and thirteen patients treated in 2011 were included for care performance analysis. Pathology reports confirmed malignancy in all women. Surgery was done within 2months of diagnosis for 90 (99%) of 91 women with stage I to III breast cancer. Chemotherapy was given to 21 (88%) of 24 women with stage I to III hormone-receptor negative breast cancer within 4months. Radiation therapy for stage I to III breast cancer after breast conserving surgery within 1year was given to 25 (81%) of 31 eligible patients. Radiation therapy for stage I to III breast cancer with node positive after mastectomy within 1year was given to 15 (83%) of 18 eligible women. Tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor was given to women with stage I to III hormone-receptor positive breast cancer within 1year to 60 (88%) of 68 eligible women. Trastuzumab for stage I to III HER2-positive breast cancer was given within 4months to 13 (57%) of 23 eligible women. 601 patients treated between 2008 and 2012 were included for survival analysis. The overall relative survival at 5years was 91% (age standardised 91%); relative survival for stage I, II, III, and IV cancers were 100%, 96%, 78%, and 40%, respectively. Abstract: This paper presents the results of a study on tropospheric scintillation on satellite link that has been performed at University Sains Malaysia (USM) to obtain statistics of scintillation from the 12.255GHz Superbird-C satellite with an elevation angle of 40.1°. Comparison of existing tropospheric scintillation models, namely the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Direct Physical-Statistical Prediction (DPSP), Modeled Physical-Statistical Prediction (MPSP), Kamp–Tervonen–Salonen (KVS), and Karasawa were done for the measurement site. Then, cumulative distributions of measured scintillation intensity compared to the result of the prediction models for tropospheric scintillation were plotted and analyzed. ITU-R model gave the best prediction of 5.8% of error at 0.1% of fading time, compared with the other models. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The existence of the F3-layer has been observed at Brazilian equatorial stations. This paper reports on a 1-year observations at Parit Raja, Malaysia (Lat. 1°52′N, Long. 103°48′E). The greatest number of appearances of the F3-layer is around local noon while the least is after local dawn. Its occurrence is more pronounced during winter and the equinoxes. The mean height of reflection for the layer is about 600km reaching a maximum of about 900km during the winter of 2004/2005. • A systematic subdividing method for landslide inventory data is presented. • Subdividing strategy is important especially when the data varies in distribution. • IIC, a technique developed in this research. • IIC enables measurement complexity of inventory datasets. • KNN, SVM and DT used to test the superiority of the new sample subdividing method. Current practice in choosing training samples for landslide susceptibility modelling (LSM) is to randomly subdivide inventory information into training and testing samples. Where inventory data differ in distribution, the selection of training samples by a random process may cause inefficient training of machine learning (ML)/statistical models. A systematic technique may, however, produce efficient training samples that well represent the entire inventory data. This is particularly true when inventory information is scarce. This research proposed a systemic strategy to deal with this problem based on the fundamental distribution of probabilities (i.e. Hellinger) and a novel graphical representation of information contained in inventory data (i.e. inventory information curve, IIC). This graphical representation illustrates the relative increase in available information with the growth of the training sample size. Experiments on a selected dataset over the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia were conducted to validate the proposed methods. The dataset contained 104 landslide inventories and 7 landslide-conditioning factors (i.e. altitude, slope, aspect, land use, distance from the stream, distance from the road and distance from lineament) derived from a LiDAR-based digital elevation model and thematic maps acquired from government authorities. In addition, three ML/statistical models, namely, k -nearest neighbour (KNN), support vector machine (SVM) and decision tree (DT), were utilised to assess the proposed sampling strategy for LSM. The impacts of model's hyperparameters, noise and outliers on the performance of the models and the shape of IICs were also investigated and discussed. To evaluate the proposed method further, it was compared with other standard methods such as random sampling (RS), stratified RS (SRS) and cross-validation (CV). The evaluations were based on the area under the receiving characteristic curves. The results show that IICs are useful in explaining the information content in the training subset and their differences from the original inventory datasets. The quantitative evaluation with KNN, SVM and DT shows that the proposed method outperforms the RS and SRS in all the models and the CV method in KNN and DT models. The proposed sampling strategy enables new applications in landslide modelling, such as measuring inventory data content and complexity and selecting effective training samples to improve the predictive capability of landslide susceptibility models. Introduction: Haemoglobin (Hb) Quong Sze is a non-deletional α-thalassaemia subtype that occurs due to missense mutation at codon 125 of the HBA2 gene. Interaction between Hb QS with Southeast Asian double α-globin gene deletion results in non-deletional HbH disease, which is more severe than deletional HbH., Case Report: A 3-month-old baby boy was presented with neonatal anaemia and mild hepatomegaly. Full blood count revealed severe hypochromic microcytic anaemia. There was an abundance of HbH inclusion bodies in his red blood cells. High-performance liquid chromatography showed a reduced HbA2 level with the presence of pre-run peak. Capillary electrophoresis showed the presence of HbH and Hb Barts. Molecular analysis found a common α 0 -thalassaemia (-- SEA ) in one allele and mutation in codon 125 in the other allele., Discussion: Non-deletional HbH disease due to a combination of deletional and non-deletional mutations may present with severe clinical manifestations than those with deletion mutations, which warrants accurate diagnosis using molecular techniques.

Introduction: Healthcare workers (HCWs) were among the first to be fully vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2. However, the antibody responses to the vaccines and potential decline among Malaysian HCW are still unclear. The objective of this study is to follow-up anti-S antibody levels among HCW vaccinated with mRNA vaccine (BTN162b2) and inactivated vaccine (CoronaVac)., Materials and Methods: Plasma samples were collected prevaccination, 2 weeks and 6 months post-vaccination and tested for total immunoglobulin levels using ELISA method., Results: A small percentage of HCW (2.2%, 15/677) had elevated anti-S antibody levels in their pre-vaccination plasma samples (median 20.4, IQR 5.8), indicating that they were exposed to SARS-CoV-2 infection prior to vaccination. The mRNA vaccine significantly increased anti-S levels of both previously infected and uninfected individuals to saturation levels (median 21.88, IQR.0.88) at 2 weeks postsecond dose of the vaccine. At 6 months post-vaccination, the antibody levels appeared to be maintained among the recipients of the mRNA vaccine. However, at this time point, anti-S antibody levels were lower in individuals given inactivated vaccine (median 20.39, IQR 7.31, n=28), and interestingly, their antibody levels were similar to anti-S levels in pre-vaccination exposed individuals. Antibody levels were not different between the sexes., Conclusion: Anti-S levels differ in individuals given the different vaccines. While further study is required to determine the threshold level for protection against SARSCoV- 2, individuals with low antibody levels may be considered for boosters.

Over the past decade, concerns over microplastic pollution in the marine ecosystem has increasingly gained more attention, but research investigating the ingestion of microplastics by marine fish in Malaysia is still regrettably lacking. This study investigated the microplastic presence, abundance, and morphological types within the guts of four species of commercial marine fish ( Atule mate, Crenimugil seheli, Sardinella fimbriata and Rastrelliger brachysoma ) caught in seawater off the coast of Malaysia's Northwest Peninsular. A total of 72 individual commercial marine fish guts from four species (fish per species n  = 18) were examined. Remarkably, this study found that 100% of the samples contained microplastics. A total number of 432 microplastics (size < 5 mm) from the four species were found in the excised marine fish guts. The most common type of microplastic discovered was fragment, which accounted for 49.5% of all microplastics present. The gut microplastic content differed between species. Sardinella fimbriata recorded the greatest amount of microplastic ingestion, with an average microplastic count of 6.5 (±4.3) items per individual fish. However, there were no statistically significant differences found when comparing study species and different locations. SEM-EDX analysis confirmed the presence of microplastic particles by identifying the chemical elements found in the samples. Since the four studied species of commercial marine fish are popular protein sources in Malaysians' daily diet, this study suggests potential microplastic exposure to humans via contaminated fish consumption in Malaysia, which was previously unknown. Recent reports of natural human infection by Plasmodium cynomolgi indicate the increased risk of zoonotic transmission by this simian parasite. The P. cynomolgi Duffy binding protein 2 (PcDBP2) has a potential role in the invasion pathway of host erythrocytes, and it is a possible vaccine candidate against cynomolgi malaria. This study investigates the genetic diversity, haplotypes, and natural selection of PcDBP2 region II from isolates collected from wild macaques in Peninsular Malaysia. Blood samples from 50 P. cynomolgi -infected wild macaques were used in the study. Genomic DNA extracted from the blood samples was used as template for PCR amplification of the PcDBP2 region II. The amplicons were cloned into a plasmid vector and sequenced. MEGA X and DnaSP ver.6.12.03 programmes were used to analyse the DNA sequences. A genealogical relationship of PcDBP2 region II were determined using haplotype network tree on NETWORK ver.10.2. Result showed high genetic diversity (ð = 0.017 ± 0.002; H d = 1.000 ± 0.001) of the PcDBP2 region II. The Z-test indicates a purifying selection, with population expansion as shown in Tajima's D analysis. A total of 146 haplotypes of PcDBP2 region II were observed. Phylogenetic tree analysis showed that these haplotypes were grouped into three allelic types (136 for Strain B type, 9 for Berok type, and 1 recombinant type). In the haplotype network, PcDBP2 region II revealed no geographical groupings but was divided into two distinct clusters.

Objective: SLE is a heterogeneous autoimmune disease, in terms of clinical presentation, incidence and severity across diverse ethnic populations. We investigated the human leucocyte antigens (HLA) profile (ie, HLA-A, HLA-B and HLA-C, HLA-DRB1, HLA-DQA1, HLA-DQB1, HLA-DPA1 and HLA-DPB1) in Malaysian Malay female patients with SLE and determined the generalisability of the published HLA risk factors across different ethnic populations globally including Malaysia., Methods: One hundred Malay female patients with SLE were recruited between January 2016 and October 2017 from a nephrology clinic. All patients were genotyped for HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, HLA-DRB1, HLA-DQA1, HLA-DQB1, HLA-DPA1 and HLA-DPB1 alleles using PCR sequence-specific oligonucleotides method on Luminex platform. A total of 951 HLA genotyped population-based Malay control subjects was used for association testing by means of OR with 95% CIs., Results: Our findings convincingly validated common associations between HLA-A*11 (OR=1.65, p=3.36×10 -3 , corrected P (Pc)=4.03×10 -2 ) and DQB1*05:01 (OR=1.56, p=2.02×10 -2 , Pc=non-significant) and SLE susceptibility in the Malay population. In contrast, DQB1*03:01 (OR=0.51, p=4.06×10 -4 , Pc=6.50×10 -3 ) were associated with decreased risk of SLE in Malay population. Additionally, we also detected novel associations of susceptibility HLA genes (ie, HLA-B*38:02, DPA1*02:02, DPB1*14:01) and protective HLA genes (ie, DPA1*01:03). When comparing the current data with data from previously published studies from Caucasian, African and Asian populations, DRB1*15 alleles, DQB1*03:01 and DQA1*01:02 were corroborated as universal susceptibility and protective genes., Conclusions: This study reveals multiple HLA alleles associated with susceptibility and protection against risk of developing SLE in Malay female population with renal disorders. Introduction: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) remains the leading cause of chronic kidney disease. Dysregulation of circulating miRNAs has been reported, suggesting their pathological roles in DKD. This study aimed to investigate differentially expressed miRNAs in the sera of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with and without albuminuria in a selected Malaysian population., Method: Forty-one T2DM patients on follow-up at a community clinic were divided into normo-(NA), micro-(MIC), and macroalbuminuria (MAC) groups. Differential levels of miRNAs in 12 samples were determined using the pathway-focused (human fibrosis) miScript miRNA qPCR array and was validated in 33 samples, using the miScript custom qPCR array (CMIHS02742) (Qiagen GmbH, Hilden, Germany)., Results: Trends of upregulation of 3 miRNAs in the serum, namely, miR-874-3p, miR-101-3p, and miR-145-5p of T2DM patients with MAC compared to those with NA. Statistically significant upregulation of miR-874-3p (p = 0.04) and miR-101-3p (p = 0.01) was seen in validation cohort. Significant negative correlations between the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and miR-874-3p (p = 0.05), miR-101-3p (p = 0.03), and miR-145-5p (p = 0.05) as well as positive correlation between miR-874-3p and age (p = 0.03) were shown by Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis., Conclusion: Upregulation of previously known miRNA, namely, miR-145-5p, and possibly novel ones, namely, miR-874-3p and miR-101-3p in the serum of T2DM patients, was found in this study. There was a significant correlation between the eGFR and these miRNAs. Introduction: Intravenous (IV) thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) is effective in treating acute ischaemic stroke. Our primary objective is to assess the outcome of these acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) patients after IV alteplase with the modified Rankin scale (mRS)., Methods: This is a cross-sectional study in which patients receiving IV alteplase in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, from January 2017 to April 2020 were recruited. Demographical data, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores, door-to-needle time were recorded. Modified Rankin scale (mRS) scores were evaluated at 90 days after initial therapy. Good and poor functional outcomes were defined as 0-2 and 3-6, respectively., Results: A total of 30 patients were included in the study with a mean age of 59±11.47 years old. 76.7% of them were male and the rest were female. From the study, onset-toneedle time was 197.47±51.74 minutes, whereas door-toneedle time was 120.93±53.63 minutes. Seventeen (56.3%) patients achieved a favourable score of 0-2 on the mRS at 90 days after treatment. Haemorrhagic transformation occurred in eight (26.7%) of the patients with a mortality rate of 13.3%., Conclusion: 56.7% of our patients showed improvement in the mRS at 90 days post thrombolysis for AIS. Higher baseline NIHSS scores and diabetes mellitus were associated with poorer functional outcomes after thrombolysis.

Introduction: The survival rate of female breast cancer survivors has been reported to be higher than other types of cancer in Malaysia. Nonetheless, breast cancer survivors face new challenges from unwanted side effects of treatment or management such as fatigue, psychological disturbance, or arm swelling, which can lead to the decline of quality of life (QOL). This study aims to adapt the Malay version of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B) to evaluate the QOL and to test its reliability and validity in Malaysian breast cancer survivors., Methods: The Malay version of the FACT-B, with Disabilities of Arms, Shoulders and Hands (DASH), and Patient Health Questionnaire Anxiety-Depression Scale (PHQ-ADS) were distributed to female breast cancer survivors which were recruited on a voluntary basis, from cancer support groups based in selected states in Malaysia. Reliability was assessed based on internal consistency (Cronbach's α), whereas concurrent validity was examined by comparing domains in FACT-B with DASH and PHQ-ADS. Finally, total scores of each domain were analysed between lymphedema and without lymphedema groups for known-group validity., Results: A total of 113 breast cancer survivors agreed to participate (response rate = 100%) in the study. Our results showed that the Cronbach's α value for Malay FACT-B is 0.88, and each domain ranged from 0.62 to 0.88. A strong correlation was found between the physical well-being domain of FACT-B with DASH. Meanwhile, the breast cancer scale (BCS) displayed significant correlation with the instrument, Patient Health Questionnaire- Anxiety Depression Scale (PHQ-ADS), indicating that multiple factors including psychological distress were measured in the BCS domain. Furthermore, the instrument was able to detect differences in physical, functional and QOL between participants from lymphedema and without lymphedema groups., Conclusion: The Malay version of the FACT-B demonstrated reliable properties and is effective in assessing QOL and can be applied in Malaysian breast cancer survivors.

Among ancestral fungi in Chaetothyriales, several groups have a life style in association with tropical ants, either in domatia or in carton-nests. In the present study, two strains collected from ant carton in Thailand and Malaysia were found to represent hitherto undescribed species. Morphological, physiological, phylogenetic data and basic genome information are provided for their classification. Because of the relatively large phylogenetic distances with known species confirmed by overall genome data, large subunit (LSU) and Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) ribosomal DNA sequences were sufficient for taxonomic circumscription of the species. The analyzed strains clustered with high statistical support as a clade in the family Trichomeriaceae. Morphologically they were rather similar, lacking sporulation in vitro. In conclusion, Incumbomyces delicatus and Incumbomyces lentus were described as new species based on morphological, physiological and phylogenetic analysis., (Copyright © 2020. Introduction: Incidence of leptospirosis has increased within the past few years in many countries. Its clinical presentations were generally nonspecific, making it difficult to assist in the diagnosis. Besides the determination of the common clinical features, the sociodemographic background is essential to identify high-risk populations to assist in prevention. Methods: Data for this study were obtained from electronic medical records among patients clinically diagnosed with leptospirosis at a tertiary hospital in Malaysia from the years 2011 to 2015 and were recorded using standard pro forma. Associations between clinical features and sociodemographics were performed using bivariate analysis and logistic regression. Results: Data were collected from 283 patients. Their mean age was 30.71 years old. Out of 283 patients, 206 (72.8%) were male. Involvement in outdoor events and water activities was the highest risk factor of acquiring leptospirosis in 64 (22.7%) patients followed by 59 (20.8%) patients who were staying in crowded housing areas with poor sanitation. Although fever was the main clinical presentation in 274 (96.8%) patients with leptospirosis, gastrointestinal (GIT) symptoms were the second most frequent in 159 (56.2%) patients followed by pulmonary symptoms, myalgia, headache, and jaundice. From the total number of 283 patients, only 21 (92.6%) presented with severe leptospirosis. GIT symptoms were a significant predictor for leptospirosis severity, while the age group was the significant sociodemographic factor toward GIT presentation in leptospirosis. The relationship between GIT symptoms and crowded housing areas with poor sanitation was also significant. Multivariable logistic regression showed that crowded housing areas with poor sanitation (odds ratio [OR] = 3.570, p  < 0.001) and age between 20 and 40 years old (OR = 2.056, p  = 0.014) were more likely to have GIT symptoms. Conclusions: Information regarding the clinical features of leptospirosis to the public is necessary, while targeted prevention by educational outreach among 20-40 year olds especially those participating in outdoor water activities are crucial to decrease the incidence and complications of leptospirosis.
