Background: Vitamin D may have immunomodulatory functions, and might therefore play a role in the pathogenesis of acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. However, no conclusive evidence exists regarding its impact on the prevalence of this infection, the associated course of disease, or prognosis. Objective: To study the association between SARS-CoV-2 infection and vitamin D deficiency in patients attending a tertiary university hospital, and to examine the clinical course of infection and prognosis for these patients. Methods: This non-interventional, retrospective study, which involved big-data analysis and employed artificial intelligence to capture data from free text in the electronic health records of patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2, was undertaken at a tertiary university hospital in Madrid, Spain, between March 2020 and March 2021. The variables recorded were vitamin D deficiency, sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, course of disease, and prognosis. Results: Of the 143,157 patients analysed, 36,261 had SARS-CoV-2 infection (25.33%) during the study period, among whom 2,588 (7.14%) had a vitamin D deficiency. Among these latter patients, women (OR 1.45 [95%CI 1.33–1.57]), adults over 80 years of age (OR 2.63 [95%CI 2.38–2.91]), people living in nursing homes (OR 2.88 [95%CI 2.95–3.45]), and patients with walking dependence (OR 3.45 [95%CI 2.85–4.26]) appeared in higher proportion. After adjusting for confounding factors, a higher proportion of subjects with SARS-CoV-2 plus vitamin D deficiency required hospitalisation (OR 1.38 [95%CI 1.26–1.51]), and had a longer mean hospital stay (3.94 compared to 2.19 days in those with normal levels; P = 0.02). Conclusion: A low serum 25(OH) vitamin D concentration in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection is significantly associated with a greater risk of hospitalisation and a longer hospital stay. The progressive aging of the population represents a challenge for society. In particular, a strong increase in the number of people over 90 is expected in the next two decades. As this phenomenon will lead to an increase in illness and age-related dependency, the study of long-lived people represents an opportunity to explore which lifestyle factors are associated with healthy aging and which with the emergence of age-related diseases, especially Alzheimer's type dementia. The project "Factors associated with healthy and pathologically aging in a sample of elderly people over 90 in the city of Madrid" (MADRID+90) brings together a multidisciplinary research team in neurodegenerative diseases that includes experts in epidemiology, neurology, neuropsychology, neuroimaging and computational neuroscience. In the first phase of the project, a stratified random sampling was carried out according to the census of the city of Madrid followed by a survey conducted on 191 people aged 90 and over. This survey gathered information on demographics, clinical data, lifestyles and cognitive status. Here, the main results of that survey are showed. The second phase of the project aims to characterize individual trajectories in the course of either healthy and pathological aging, from a group of 50 subjects over 90 who will undergo a comprehensive clinical examination comprised of neurological and cognitive testing, MRI and EEG. The ultimate goal of the project is to characterize the biophysical and clinical profiles of a population that tends to receive little attention in the literature. A better understanding of the rapidly increasing group of nonagenarians will also help to design new policies that minimize the impact and future social and economic consequences of rapidly aging societies. Teaching mathematics and improving mathematics competence are pending subjects within our educational system. The PEIM (Programa Evolutivo Instruccional para Matemáticas), a constructivist intervention program for the improvement of mathematical performance, affects the different agents involved in math learning, guaranteeing a significant improvement in students' performance. The program is based on the following pillars: (a) students become the main agents of their learning by constructing their own knowledge; (b) the teacher must be the guide to facilitate and guarantee such a construction by being a great connoisseur of the fundamental aspects of the development of the child's mathematical thinking; (c) the mathematical contents must be sequenced in terms of the complexity and significance for the student as well as contextualized at all times; and (d) the classroom must have a constructivist climate highlighting cooperative work among students. The implementation of PEIM along with the empirical evaluation conducted in several centers in Madrid and Zaragoza (Spain) confirm how students improve their mathematical competence. Both first- and second-grade students in elementary education were far more effective in solving problems, highlighting the use of more advanced strategies in their resolution and a lower incidence of conceptual errors. Moreover, it was possible to verify how the students proving greater difficulty, experienced an evolution in learning similarly to those who did not present it. The program provides customized education to allow the teacher to know at all times how he should be more influential on the students' learning through mathematical profiles. Both teaching practice and teachers were observed, being that of the experimental group more prone to analyzing processes and allowing the construction of knowledge by students, due to their psycho-developmental training. As a result, we found several improvements through the implementation of the program that may serve, for upcoming years, as a basis for the necessary changes in the teaching of mathematics. The introduction of new techniques to improve the robustness and accuracy of vehicle detection is always important for the intelligent transportation system as it may face different problems and challenges. Conventional image-based vehicle detection methods have presented difficulties in acquiring good images due to perspective and background noise, poor lighting and weather conditions. We propose a high-accurate, vehicle detection method by using Modified Inverse Perspective Mapping. Thus, the perspective effect is removed, and then the Hough transform was applied to extract road lines and lanes. Gaussian Mixture Model and chromaticity-based strategy were applied to segment the moving vehicles and tackle shadow effects, respectively. We evaluated the performance of the proposed method under recorded videos in Madrid and Tehran (with different weather conditions at urban and interurban areas). Results indicate that the proposed approach is feasible, and more accurate compared to others, especially when facing bad weather conditions and lighting variations in different environments. Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is a serious protozoal disease endemic in diverse areas, including the southern area of Madrid (Spain), where an outbreak was detected in 2009. The objective of this work is to analyze bone marrow alterations in VL patients and elaborate a diagnostic model with the aim to improve the early detection of this disease. The usual diagnostic methods, as the observation of the parasite on a bone marrow aspirate, have frequent false negatives, and the high sensitivity methods, as PCR and ELISA, are delayed or are not always available. This observational study evaluated bone marrow parameters of adult patients with clinical suspicion of VL, in which a bone marrow aspiration was performed but Leishmania was not directly observed, during the period 2009-2014. The patients finally diagnosed of VL by other methods (VL group, n=41), and the patients in which the VL was not diagnosed (non-VL group, n=20) were compared. A multivariant model was elaborated and externally validated. The final multivariant model includes percentage of myeloid series, percentage of plasma cells and quantification of megakaryocytes in the bone marrow, with an area under the ROC curve of 0.87 (0.78-0.96). The model performed well in the external validation. In cases of VL suspicion and when the parasite is not observed in the bone marrow aspiration, the proposed model could be useful in discriminating between patients with and without VL, allowing to take a therapeutic decision while awaiting the definitive diagnosis. Abstract: Aim: Anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha agents are widely used for the treatment of both inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and psoriasis. Psoriatic skin lesions induced by anti-TNF have been described in patients with IBD. We report a case series of psoriasis induced by anti-TNF agents in IBD patients. Methods: Systematic analysis of cases of psoriasis induced by anti-TNF in an IBD patient cohort in tertiary hospitals of Madrid. Results: A total of 21 of 1294 patients with IBD treated with anti-TNF-alpha agents developed drug-induced psoriasis (cumulative incidence 1.62%; 95% CI 1.06%–2.47%): 14 patients with infliximab and 7 with adalimumab; seventeen with Crohn''s disease, 4 with ulcerative colitis. The onset of skin lesions varied in a wide range of time (after a mean 13±8 doses). The most frequent site of skin lesions was the limbs (62%) followed by the trunk (48%) and the scalp (43%). The psoriasis phenotypes were plaque psoriasis (57%), scalp (14%), palmoplantar pustulosis (14%), pustular generalized psoriasis (5%), guttate (5%) and inverse (5%). Four patients interrupted the anti-TNF treatment, and that led to the complete regression of lesions in 1 of them. The other 17 patients were maintained on anti-TNF therapy and managed with topical steroids. Conclusion: Psoriatic lesions can be induced by anti-TNF drugs. Plaque psoriasis on the extremities and trunk were the most frequent presentations in our series. Topical steroid treatment is effective in most patients. Anti-TNF discontinuance may be reserved for patients with severe psoriasis or patients without response to topical therapy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article presents a study on the effects of testosterone on the sex ratio of bovine embryos produced in fully in vitro conditions. It also investigates whether the effects of sex and temperature are effectively decoupled in mammals. It states that all chemicals were purchased from Sigma (Madrid, Spain). It also reveals that the ovaries recovered from slaughtered cows were placed in NacI solution with antibiotics and maintained at 25-30oC until the collection of cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs). It notes that in the experimental conditions, testosterone does not promote a preferential selection of Y-chromosome bearing spermatozoa by the oocyte and temperature and sex ratio seems to be decoupled in mammals.

The determination of an asset's economic value has always been an important step in improving its management. The Madrid Region legislated the application of the first version of the Norma Granada as a method of appraising ornamental trees. However, the trees in the city of Madrid are only assessed in terms of ecosystem services (i-Tree Eco). A photograph of the asset to be appraised is often used in studies on the valuation of publicly-owned socio-environmental assets such as trees or landscapes. As a tree's value is very closely linked to its size and to a number of features that can be seen through direct observation of the specimen, it is important to verify the validity of photographs as a method for obtaining the public's opinion. This work presents a comparison between the valuations chosen by members of the public when observing the tree in situ and in a photograph. The aim is to verify the validity of photographs for their application to a larger sample and to understand qualitatively how citizens assess the trees in a city. The following appraisal methods were used: the American method, Council of Tree Landscape Appraisers (CTLA), Norma Granada and the Burnley method. The survey consisted of ten specimens from ten different species, and ten surveys were taken for each stem, making a total of 100 for each tree species and 1000 surveys in all. The surveys were done randomly and individually. Each interviewed chose one of the three values they were shown when observing the specimen in the photograph and in situ; 84% of the 1000 surveys gave as a result the same value choice when looking at the specimen on site and seeing it in a photograph. Introduction: Nutrition labelling (NL) provides information on the energy and nutrients in a food and it represents a valuable tool to help consumers make informed decisions about their diet and lifestyle. However, little is known about how consumers perceive the nutrition labelling information. Objectives: Evaluate the knowledge of NL of a population survey and examine aspects such as attention, reading, understanding and utility. Material and methods: 200 volunteers were interviewed about NL on National Nutrition Day (NND) on May 28, 2010 at the La Paz University Hospital in Madrid. The questionnaire was self-administered and this contained 10 closed multiple choice questions. Results: The surveyed group (66.7% women and 33.3% men) had a mean age of 42.0 ± 15 years and a BMI of 24.1 ± 3.8 kg/m². A percentage of 86.5% had completed secondary and higher education. The concept about NL was knocked by 77.1 % of them. This percentage was significantly higher according to the level of their studies (primary 7.1%, secondary 32.1% and higher studies 60,9%; p < 0,0001) and also regarding the age range (42.3% vs. 25% of over that 50, p < 0.05). 73.8% always or almost always readied NL; 67.7% of those who declared that always readied were women and 71 % had higher education. 53.8 % of people over 50 years were not capable of reading labels due to the small letters. The most interesting information for the consumers was: calories (61%), fats (39%) and cholesterol (25.7%). Nutritional concepts questions had a low percentage of right answers, especially in volunteers with lower level of education and among older age groups. Conclusions: Results show that consumers have a low level of nutrition information that would enable a better choice to purchase food. Nutrition education is needed.
