The article presents information on the world's largest eradication operation of introduced rats and rabbits on subantarctic Macquarie Island in 2011. Introduced in 1879 by sealers for food, rabbits, rats and mice are degrading the vegetation and biodiversity of Macquarie Island. The networks of burrows of European rabbits (Oryctologus cuniculus) are causing damage to seabird habitats. They have also become resistant to the myxoma virus introduced as a control measure in the 1970s.
