The article discusses the way in which music had been perceived by audiences in London, Berlin, and Vienna during the 19th century. The main claim of the article is that an analysis of how the audience had responded to the music in concert halls could function as an indicator to explore the development of broader social phenomena. Thereby, the focus of the article is on the aesthetic and political evaluation of the symphonic music in concert halls during the aforementioned century. The article focuses on the way in which communities had established through the concerts in the three above mentioned cities. Further topics in this article include the listening behavior of the public as well as the way in which these new customs had been politicized.
