The article reports on the Student Leadership Project (SLP) used by the Lewiston School System in Lewiston, Maine to address potential conflict rising from an influx of Somali immigrants. It discusses the program in which students actively participate in the prevention of bullying and harassment at school. It lists the three parts of the program, including student sharing about bullying and harassment incidents that took place at school, education about the effects of bias-based incidents, and instruction on intervention strategies that may de-escalate such incidents. The article also describes the Controversial Dialogue (CD) program which strives to facilitate discussion around polarizing issues. Proactive and reactive elements of the programs are presented.
