Objective: The objective of this study was to assess adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeD) and the risk of stroke in the Lebanese population. Methods: A hospital based case-control study was conducted in Lebanon between January 1st, 2015 and December 31st, 2016. Data were collected prospectively using a standardized questionnaire. Adherence to the MeD was assessed based on the total number of points a patient can have on the MeD scale. Data were analysed using SPSS version 24. The strength of association between the risk of stroke and adherence to MeD was expressed in odds ratio (OR) through 95% confidence interval. P-value <0.05 determined statistical significance. Results: Around 205 stroke cases and 445 hospitalized stroke-free patients were included in this study. In the total study sample, the MeD had a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 11 points with a median of 7 points. Stroke patients had a lower MeD median compared to controls (6 vs 8 points). Around 29.5% of the total sample had a MeD score within the first quartile (52.3% of them had a stroke) and 24% of all included subjects scored within the last quartile (7% of them hospitalized for stroke) (p<0.001). The higher the adherence to MeD the lower the risk of stroke. High adherence to MeD was associated with a decreased risk of stroke, OR 0.1 (95%CI, 0.04-0.24; p<0.001). Conclusions: Higher adherence to MeD significantly decreases the risk of stroke in the Lebanese population. Research has identified both nonmodifiable and modifiable risk factors for breast cancer (BC), with accumulating evidence showing that adopting adequate dietary practices could decrease the risk of this disease. This study aimed to assess nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and lifestyle practices (KAP) that may lead to BC risk reduction among female university students in Lebanon and examine the determinants of their practices. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a convenience sampling method, comprising 356 (response rate: 71.2%) female students at the American University of Beirut aged 18 to 25 years with no history of BC. Participants completed a pre-tested questionnaire addressing the objectives of the study. The modified Bloom's cut-off of 75% was used to categorize knowledge and practice scores as poor or good and attitudes as negative or positive. Large proportions of students had poor knowledge (68.3%), negative attitudes (65.4%), and poor practices (98.0%) scores. Pursuing a health-related major and having a higher GPA were associated with better knowledge and attitudes while being older and having a lower degree of stress were associated with positive attitudes only. Having a lower body mass index (BMI) was associated with better practice scores. Better knowledge significantly predicted higher intake of fruits and vegetables. Overall knowledge and attitudes were significantly correlated with each other, but neither was significantly correlated with overall practice. These findings underscore the importance of implementing public health programs geared towards improving nutrition KAP that may lead to BC risk reduction.

Background: Smoking in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) increases their risk for recurrent events and death., Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the smoking trajectory among patients hospitalized with ACS and associated factors., Methods: Forty patients with ACS who were smokers were interviewed in the hospital about smoking history, nicotine dependence, depression, self-efficacy, and social support. Phone interviews at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after discharge assessed smoking status and related factors., Results: Most patients (≥80%) were middle-aged married men, with high nicotine dependence (52.5%) and low self-efficacy for smoking cessation (mean [SD], 38.3 [27.19]) at baseline. Although 85% intended to quit after discharge, 62.5% continued smoking after 1 year. Persistent smoking was associated with lower self-efficacy (P < .01) and higher depression (P = .025)., Conclusion: Smoking cessation intervention must start in the hospital and continue for 6 months. The program must target self-efficacy, manage depression, and involve the patient's family.

Background: Noncommunicable diseases are the leading cause of death in Lebanon, with cardiovascular diseases accounting for almost half of the annual deaths., Purpose: We aimed to determine awareness of noncardiac Lebanese hospitalized patients for their coronary artery disease risk factors, their level of adherence to medications or lifestyle modifications, and assess factors associated with awareness., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 14 hospitals with a total of 382 patients. Levels of awareness were evaluated by the comparison of self-report with measurements and laboratory test results. Healthy behaviors and adherence to treatment were evaluated. Factors associated with better awareness were studied using multivariate regressions, while adherence to treatments and healthy lifestyle were described for the different risk factors and in the Framingham Risk Score categories., Results: Our work revealed a moderate-to-high level of awareness (58.7% for overweight/obesity, 75% for hypertension, 85.7% for diabetes, and 86.4% for dyslipidemia) among patients for most cardiovascular risk factors, but a low-to-moderate level of adherence for some interventions such as physical exercise, weight loss, and smoking cessation., Conclusion: The results emphasize on the importance of educational campaigns on healthy habits and screening to improve early diagnosis, increase patients' awareness of their risk factors, and, therefore, optimize primary prevention., Competing Interests: Disclosure The authors report no conflicts of interest in this work.

Purpose: The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) is the only large-scale study to demonstrate a reduction in the risk of progression to end-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD) when vitamin supplementation was given to patients with advanced forms of the disease. Our study assesses the impact of this study on vitamin supplementation in patients with advanced AMD from 5 years before publication of the AREDS results until 5 years after., Methods: Medical records of patients with AMD presenting between September 1996 and October 2006 were reviewed. Patients were subclassified according to AREDS categories. The proportion of advanced cases on vitamin replacement before October 2001 was compared to that after October 2001. Since October 2001, the different reasons for abstinence were investigated and analyzed., Results: Only 2403 patients of the 40,000 medical records reviewed met the AREDS AMD criteria. Of these, 137 patients verifying categories 3 and 4 were diagnosed prior to October 2001. Fourteen were on supplements then. Fifty-three patients complied with the represcribed vitamins during subsequent visits after October 2001, raising the percentage significantly to 48.9% (p<0.001). Also, from October 2001 until October 2006, an additional 76 patients verified categories 3 and 4. Fifty-three (69.7%) of them were on vitamins (p=0.001). Financial burden was the principal reason for abstinence in 67.7% of patients prescribed vitamins after October 2001., Conclusions: The results of AREDS had an impressive impact on prescribing supplements in AREDS category 3 and 4 patients in Lebanon. The main reason for noncompliance is financial.
