Many invasive plant records have been given in Turkey in recent years. Some of these are considered as escapees from garden or farm when they have medicinal properties and economic value. Grindelia hirsutula, which is thought to be the garden escapees, has many medicinal uses (for example treatment of the upper respiratory tract infection). It has been identified in the province of Kütahya as an invasive plant. The record of this invasive plant is also a new genus record (Grindelia) for the flora of Turkey. Photographs and distinctive characters (such as papus awns, glandular hairs and leaf features) as well as plant descriptions are presented in the article. The differences of Grindelia hirsutula from genus Inula which is present in the flora of Turkey have been determined. Information about the isotype specimen of the plant in the Kew Herbarium and its distribution in the world are given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

President İsmet İnönü's determined stance is one of the developments in foreign policy, especially in the Second World War. The victory of the pro-democracy England, France and the USA in World War II accelerated the process of transition to a multi-party political life. In this process, with the establishment of parties such as the National Development Party (MKP) and the Democrat Party (DP), the long-lasting single-party period in Turkey came to an end. The 27-year Republican People's Party (CHP) government came to an end with the 14 May 1950 elections, especially as the DP gained strength in the hearts of the people after the 1946 elections. In the new era in Turkey, DP has turned into the ruling party and CHP has turned into an opposition party. In this context, between the years 1950-1960, which is expressed as the DP period, parliamentary elections were held in 1950, 1954 and 1957. The most troublesome period of the DP government, which won the aforementioned 1950 and 1954 general elections by a wide margin, was the election that took place in 1957, when it struggled with both internal and external problems. As a result of the election, the DP lost a significant amount of votes compared to the previous elections, and accordingly, the number of deputies decreased. While this is the case across Turkey, the DP in Kütahya achieved a serious success by winning all 8 deputies. In the study; The reflections of the 1957 general elections, which are not in parallel with Turkey, on the city of Kütahya, and the changes made in the election law, the methods used by the parties in nominating candidates, the propaganda process and how they evaluate the election results are mentioned in detail. The increasing urbanization and rapid economic development have led to growing housing markets. This has resulted in a rising demand for housing due to migration towards cities and the acceptance of housing as both an investment and a wealth protection tool. On the other hand, housing prices are affected by many factors, thereby studies on housing price forecasts are carried out within the scope of different models and various methods. In line with the significant importance of housing markets as one of Turkey's economic growth tools, this study includes the forecast of the classification of 4-bedroom (3+1) housing prices in the central district of Kütahya province. The dataset used includes various criteria that affect housing prices, and different machine learning classification algorithms that are utilized. As a result, it is seen that the accuracy rates of the k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Decision Trees (DT) and Random Forest (RF) algorithms were above 60%. As the main performance criterion, the AUC scores yielded that the most successful classification forecast is acquired by the RF algorithm, which is followed by the k-NN. In the context of the variables and data set included in this study, it was seen that successful outcomes in the classification forecasts of 4-bedroom apartments’ housing prices in the city center of Kütahya were obtained by these two methods. The tourism sector, which has positive effects on the economy, is important in the development of regional development. In recent years, the value given to the tourism sector has been increasing in the development of rural and regional economies. Thus, a strong basis for sustainable regional development programs will be provided in the long run. Kütahya has a very suitable potential for thermal tourism. Its resources are of great importance for the development of an economy based on regional resources and the creation of employment. The tourism sector has an important place in the development of the Kütahya region, where heavy industry opportunities are limited. In this study, the economic potential of Kütahya thermal resources and the economic situation of thermal tourism activities were tried to be examined with a survey study. It has been determined that the expenditures of the tourists coming to Kütahya are an auxiliary factor in terms of regional development. The study shows that if tourism planning for Kütahya is carried out at micro and macro levels, more efficient results can be obtained from tourism in the region. The present study focuses on the impressions of Şihabeddin b. Fazlullah El Ömerî, Matrakçı Nasuh, Kudbüddin Mekki, Aşık Mehmed, Kâtip Çelebi, Evliya Çelebi, Ebû Bekir B. Behrâm, Şamseddin Sâmi, Ali Cevad and Mehmed Ziya, who have visited Kütahya and its surroundings, on architectural works around this city. Kütahya has been one of the most popular places for travelers due to its location on the trading route in the Seljuk period and its being the capital of the Germiyans Principality and the Anatolian state. These journeys started in the first half of the 14th century, and occurred extensively over the 16th and 17th centuries. The aim of the present study is to obtain information about the architectural monuments of the region via architectural works of the Turkish period through travelogues. Travelogues have an important role among the written sources of ancient Anatolian geography. These works consist of observations of their authors and information obtained from local people. In addition to the inclusion of a significant amount of superficial information, travelogues also contain extensive information. The most comprehensive information take place in the Evliya Çelebi travelogues. Features related to architectural structure such as the period of its construction, the inscription, patron, current situation, materials, and decorations can be determined especially in Evliya Çelebi’s Works. Kütahya is one of the ancient cities of Anatolia. The city, which was founded in the pre-Christian era, witnessed important settlements in the Roman period, became a religious and commercial center in the Byzantine period and continued to increase its importance. Byzantine emperors built walls and bastions in Kütahya Castle on the high hill overlooking the city. The conquest of Kütahya took place between the years 1075-1078, after the Turks defeated Byzantium in 1071 and started to keep Anatolia as their homeland. After the conquest, the city was prosperous during both the Germiyanoğulları and Ottoman periods. In the study, XIII BC. The development process of Kütahya in terms of urbanism and the environment will be discussed starting from the Phrygian period in the XVIII century until the Republican period. The main point of the research from the middle of the XIX. century until the first quarter of the XX. century to determine their status of economic and commercial life of non-Muslim merchants who lived in Kütahya during this period, to compare them to the Muslims in Kütahya in the same period to seek answers to the questions of what level they are economically. Non-Muslim Ottoman citizens who displaying a negative image on political issues, their social and economic has not been adequately analysed. In this context, in order to have better understanding of the economic and commercial life of non-Muslim Ottoman citizens, local history of reviews need to be combined. In this context, economic-commercial lives of non-Muslims within a certain area both our economic history and in terms of finding out coexistence skills of elements with different languages, religions and cultures are important. In the Islamic world, dervish lodges and zawiyah, whose foundations date back to the Age of Happiness, came to the fore with their sufism-based education activities in the process of Turkification and Islamization of Anatolia. These institutions have been decisive in the enrichment of religious, cultural and economic life in the opening of many towns and villages to settlement, along with mosques. In Kütahya, dervish lodges and zawiyah belonging to the Mevleviyye, Nakşibendiyye, Rifaiyye ve Halvetiyye orders were established. In this study, in between 1832-1863, the auction procedures of the incomes of the districts and towns subjected to the Kütahya Sanjak and the lodges in the villages connected to them, and the data in some accounting documents were examined and evaluated based on archive documents. Tile making, which dates back centuries, is a sector of special importance for Kütahya. In addition to its contribution to the economy of the city, tile making also adds socio-cultural value to the city with its artistic dimension. Despite experiencing stagnation from time to time over the years, Kütahya tile making has gained an important place in history by renewing and improving itself. The tile industry, which still maintains its vitality and constitutes an important part of the economy of Kütahya; Due to some economic problems faced by the companies producing in the tile industry, insufficient promotion of tile art, the existence of unregistered production, the lack of branding in the tile making industry and the marketing problems experienced in the industry, it cannot see the importance it deserves. In this study, Kütahya tiles; Its development in history and its current situation are discussed in terms of economic and socio-cultural aspects. In western Anatolia, volcanic rocks in the Eocene-Quaternary age range are widely outcropped. Early Miocene volcanites are represented as andesite, dacite and rhyolites in Kütahya and its surroundings. In this study, the whole rock, Sr-Nd-Pb and O isotope geochemistry and K-Ar geochronology data of the volcanic unit consisting of rhyolites outcropping in the Emet Borate Basin will be presented. Petrographic properties of the studied volcanites are generally observed in the porphyritic vitrophyric texture, and their composition consists of plagioclase, biotite, quartz, sanidine and amphibole minerals. The major and trace element variation of the volcanites, which have calc-alkaline affinity and contain high-K, indicate that plagioclase, amphibole, biotite and alkali feldspar fractionation is effective in the evolution of rocks. In addition, high LILE and LREE and low Nb, Zr, Y and Ti contents indicate that fractional crystallization, crustal contamination and/or assimilation play an important role in the evolution of volcanites and that their main magmas are derived from an enriched source. The whole rock K-Ar aging method shows that the age of the sample belonging to the studied volcanites is 21.4±0.6 Ma. According to the obtained isotope results, (87Sr/ 86Sr)i ratio is 0.708885, (143Nd/144Nd) i ratio is 0.512347 206Pb/204Pb isotope ratio 19.04, 207Pb/204Pb isotope ratio is 15.6790 and 208Pb/204Pb isotope ratio is 37.9130 and δ18O ratio is 11.3 ‰. The obtained geochronological, geochemical, and isotopic data indicate that the investigated volcanites were formed in the volcanic arc environment and that fractional crystallization, as well as enrichment in the source mantle area and crustal pollution / assimilation (AFC) processes, have been influenced in their evolution. The Grand Mosque, the most significant temple of Kütahya, was one of the Anatolian mosques with wooden posts when it was first built. However, due to the repairs it has undergone later, today it became a two-domed and longitudinally organized plan structure. The inscriptions and calligraphy inside the mosque form the topic of this article. The Arabic spellings and Turkish pronunciations of the inscriptions have been reconsidered because of the incomplete and incorrect data in earlier studies. Moreover, the meanings, locations, styles and calligraphers of the writings inside the mosque have been specified. Although most resources include one calligrapher's name regarding the inscriptions, four calligrapher signatures have been detected in them. Based on all this information, this study has evaluated to what extent the hand-drawn calligraphy inscribed with paint on the plaster or wood in the Grand Mosque of Kütahya reflect the calligraphy tradition in the Ottoman mosques, the place of these inscriptions in the calligraphy art history and the calligraphers' skills in writing and design. Furthermore, it has been realized that some inscriptions in the mosque were deleted and replaced by others. It is estimated that this situation occured following the last restoration of the mosque. In 1982, Turkish Military Headquarter Commanding based in Afyon initiated a study in order to compile and record the memories of the people who are still alive and who lived in towns and villages in Uşak, Afyon, Kütahya and Eskişehir provinces during the War of Independence. In this context, school principals, mukhtars and imams in villages, under the coordination of the relevant National Education Directorates, collected these memories and prepared a report. Thus, many important local events that took place in those years, but that were not reflected in the official documents of the period, came to light. In this study, within the framework of the data obtained from the aforementioned sources, the events that took place in the towns and villages of Kütahya, which was occupied by the Greek, was examined and revealed through the statements of witnesses. Simav was seen as a district connected to the Sanjak of Kütahya in the XVI. century. In our study, the demographic structure of Simav was discussed in light of the data from the Cadastral Record Book No. 49 in the Presidential Ottoman Archive, and settlements and the economic structure was also mentioned. Firstly, the city of Simav was addressed. It is determined from the cadastral record book (Tahrir) that there were three neighborhoods in the city center called Yukaru (Upper Part), Orta (Middle Part), and Aşağa (Lower Part) and the total population consisted of approximately 1375 persons. It is understood that rural areas of Simav spread over a large area and there were 69 villages next to the hamlets, where the total population was approximately 8045 people. The total population of the district was approximately 9420 people. While 14.60% of the district population lived in the city, 85.40% lived in rural areas. In addition, it is determined that the region was home to nomads and some village name sare composed of Yörük (Yuruk) community names. It is observed that besides grains such as wheat, barley, bitter vetch, oat; vegetables and fruits were grown and livestock activities were also carried out in addition to the beekeeping in the district. Having a great importance in terms of family and society, birth is the first of the transition stages of life. The joy of joining a new individual to the family, excitement, fear and avoidance of harm bring about many rituals. There are practices before, during and after birth in different regions of Anatolia. In Kütahya, an ancient Anatolian city, many practices regarding birth are still being practiced. The aim of the study is to record the birth practices of the city, which tries to preserve the elements of its traditional texture despite technological developments and modernization, and the practices of the birth bed, which has an important place in these practices, in the context in which it is kept alive. This study was carried out within the scope of the project named "Birth-Wedding and Death Customs of Kütahya from Past to Present" supported by Dumlupınar University Scientific Research Center (BAP). The country had passed in a hard process when finally, the First Turkish Grand National Assembly opened on 23rd April 1920 since The Mudros Armistice was signed and the country was taken under the control of the occupation forces. At that time, the Assembly took over a vital duty. This duty was the execution of Turkish Independence War under the leadership of the Speaker of the Assembly, Mustafa Kemal Pasha. In such an environment with negative hopeless conditions in the country, the Assembly started to take the responsibility of the nation and saving the country from captivity. It was full of great challenges to manage such a hard process. Because in the period mentioned, there were very depressed and unfortunate developments. Developments such as the fall of Bursa, followed by the incidence of rebellious Ethem and the relocation of the Assembly to Kayseri, which finally took place after the Kütahya and Eskişehir Wars, had caused the country to go through psychologically sensitive traumas. When Bursa fell, the insults of the Greeks caused great sorrow in the country. Moreover, a black cloth was laid on the speaking stand of the Assembly to show the mourning atmosphere. The incidence of rebellious Ethem, which took place on the eve of the First Inönü War and left the Assembly between the two fires, was also an effective form of asymmetric exhaustion. Undoubtedly, the most fragile phase was the threat that even Ankara faced the danger of falling after Kütahya-Eskişehir Wars. This situation caused a great bad mood and demotivation, uncertainty and uneasiness in the public. Managing all these events correctly and taking risks depending on location required a serious skill. Even the slightest panic, impertinence and hesitant behavior that the Assembly would demonstrate could have immediately been reflected to the public. This would drag the ongoing struggle to a more critical phase and disrupt it. The Assembly successfully passed these exams. The Assembly acted very calmly while managing these processes and caught up no concerns, apprehension and hesitation. They managed these processes with great courage and fortitude. In this way, the objective of the War of Independence was successfully accomplished. The content of this work consists of the ceramics of İznik and Kütahya which were found in excavation carried out in Edirne Yeni Saray in 2013-2014. This palace began to be built at the end of the first half of 15th century and thereafter it was continuously used by Ottoman sultans. The palace, which started to lose its significance in classical period from 18th century, entered into the process of demolition by means of Ottoman-Russia war. Besides the architectural features of the palace with the excavation works made in different years in Republic Period, the things used in the palace are also endeavoured to be unearthed. The ceramics of İznik and Kütahya from these materials have a crucial position alongside of imported ceramics which were used in the palace. Even though the adornment techniques are the same, these ceramics of which colours and motifs show difference have the characteristics of a document in terms of reflection of pleasure approach of a period of Ottoman. While the blue-white ceramics show the adornment approach of end of 15th century and first half of 16th century, multi-coloured ones reflect the adornment approach of Ottoman entirely in solid-coloured and multi-coloured İznik ceramics. It is possible to see single and multi-coloured dyed style of Kütahya in cups which are most notably form and a couple of part of bowl in Kütahya ceramics. While Chinese influence is observed in some of these samples that are dated as 18th century, some of them shows us the style of ceramists from Kütahya entirely. The family of Bacillariaceae Ehrenberg is a group of well-known raphid diatoms, associated with water quality. Our current knowledge of the species diversity of this group in Turkey is still incomplete. There are three river basins in the Kütahya region in Turkey, located in the eastern part of the country, including the Gediz, Sakarya and Susurluk basins, thus the region is rich in lotic waters. We present each taxon based on our observations of specimens collected in the Kütahya region. A total of 53 sites were surveyed in this study and a total of 65 taxa from Bacillariaceae were identified. Of these 65 taxa, 15 are recognized as the first records for Turkey. For each taxon, we indicate the reference(s) used for its identification. To facilitate the identification by others working on the Turkish freshwater diatom flora, we also present dimensions of the taxa identified, the distribution of each taxon in the Kütahya region, the distribution of each taxon in Turkey as well as one or more figures for each taxon. The first geochronological and geochemical data are presented for the Kütahya area volcanics in western Turkey to study mantle sources and magmatic processes. Petrographically, the studied volcanics are composed primarily of olivine augite basalt and augite basalt, with minor basaltic andesites/trachyandesites, and show porphyric, hyalo-microlithic porphyric and rarely glomeroporphyric textures. The rock samples contain plagioclase as phenocrysts and microlites, olivine, augite and biotite as phenocrysts, sanidine, opaques, and volcanic glass. Whole-rock K–Ar dating of the studied volcanics yielded cooling ages between 20.1 ± 0.7 and 17 ± 0.5 Ma (Early Miocene). The volcanics indicate magma evolution from shoshonitic to medium-high-K character. High contents of LILEs and LREEs, and low amounts of Nb, Ta, Zr and Ti indicate that fractional crystallization and assimilation processes had a role in the evolution of these volcanics. The studied volcanics also have moderate to high 87Sr/86Sr (0.70719–0.70971), negative εNd values (−6.27 to −4.63), and high 206Pb/204Pb (18.93–19.05), 207Pb/204Pb (15.69–15.76) and 208Pb/204Pb (38.99–39.32) ratios. Integrated trace element geochemical and Sr-Nd-Pb-O isotopic data suggest that the Kütahya area volcanics evolved via AFC processes from parental magma(s) that originated from a subcontinental veined lithospheric mantle source metasomatized by subduction-related fluids and melts. • Geochemistry and petrology of the Kütahya volcanics in W Turkey were presented. • K/Ar dating of the volcanics yield a cooling age between 20.1 ± 0.7 and 17 ± 0.5 Ma. • The volcanics show evolutionary trends from medium-high-K to shoshonitic character. • Isotopic AFC modelling reveals source and crustal contamination in petrogenesis. • The volcanics evolved from melts of a subcontinental veined lithospheric mantle. Heavy metal concentrations in surface water and soil samples around Gümüşköy Silver Mine, located in Köprüören Basin, were determined to evaluate the anthropogenic level of contamination due to mining activities. The mean concentrations of As, Pb, Sb and Cd in 12 soil samples came out to be 1193, 844, 66 and 19 ppm, respectively. Soil pollution assessment was carried out by using geoaccumulation index ( Igeo), enrichment factor (EF) and pollution index (PI). Igeo, EF and PI suggest anthropogenic pollution of As, Pb, Sb and Zn in the areas where there is leakage of these heavy metals from the waste pools of the silver mine facility. Water samples collected from the surface waters also have elevated concentrations of these heavy metals. The contaminants are most probably transported by surface waters in the rainy season. Arsenic is one of the most deleterious trace elements due essentially to its carcinogenicity resulting in the development of internal malignancies and skin cancer. In this study, arsenic concentrations of soils and stream waters in an area where the world class borate deposits of Turkey occur are presented. Soil and stream water samples were collected from the Emet basin of Neogene age, where intense borate mining activities have been practiced for about 60 years. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was employed to analyze arsenic concentrations in soils and Gutzeit Method for water samples. As concentration levels in soils and waters ranged from 0.4 up to 2488.4 mg kg (mean 111.8 ± 200.1 SD) and from 8 to 243 µg/L (mean 96.63 ± 66.83 SD), respectively. While soil pH measurements varied between 5.97 and 7.75 (avg. 7.06 ± 0.56), water pH values ranged from 6.44 to 8.32 (avg. 7.734 ± 0.59). As contents of both soils and surface waters were significantly (few tens to thousands times) high exceeding the maximum contaminant levels of current US-EPA's maximum contaminant level of 0.01 mg As/L. Western Anatolian young (down to about 1 my) volcanic activities and shallow intrusive emplacements resulted in the formation of considerable number of geothermal and hydrothermal systems and kept them active for long enough that gave rise not only to the formation of numerous epithermal mineralizations rich in As-Sb-Hg-bearing sulfide minerals, but also to the formation of As-enriched sedimentary and magmatic rocks. 1. Yedigöller, known for its eutrophic features, is located 2 km away from the center ofKütahya. This region consists of seven lakes but has unfortunately been used as landfill since 1977. What is more, two of these seven lakes have been purposefully dried out. This splendid region is sadly under threat of extinction due to heavy pollutant factors such as domestic, industrial and medical wastes.2. In the present study, water and sediment samples of two different stations, apart from investigating and measuring temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, aluminum, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, zinc, silver, boron, cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury, manganese, nickel, lead and selenium in 2009.3. Our results demonstrated that the levels of metal concentration occurring in the sediment samples were higher than those cultivated from the water samples. Furthermore, our physicochemical parameters determined that while the water quality of the lakes occurring in Yedigöller was of III. class, it was of IV. class in terms of Se and B metals. This study presents the results of both field and laboratory tests that have been undertaken to assess liquefaction susceptibilities of the soils in Kütahya city, located in the well-known seismically active fault zone. Liquefaction potentials of the sub-surface materials at Kütahya city were estimated by using the geological aspect and geotechnical methods such as SPT method of field testing. And, the data obtained have been mapped according to susceptibility and hazard. The susceptibility map indicated “liquefable” and “marginally liquefable” areas in alluvium, and “non-liquefable” areas in Neogene unit for the magnitude of earthquake of M=6.5; whereas, liquefaction hazard map produced by using of liquefaction potential index showed the severity categories from “very low” to “high.” However, a large area in the study area is prone to liquefy according to liquefaction susceptibility map; the large parts of the liquefable horizon are mapped as “low” class of severity by the use of the liquefaction potential index. It can be said that hazard mapping of liquefaction for a given site is crucial than producing liquefaction susceptibility map for estimating the severity. Both the susceptibility and hazard maps should be produced and correlated with each other for planning in an engineering point of view. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
