Jeju Island, due to its position at the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula in Northeast Asia, is a on the unique enclave of the many southern elements in the area and features a mixture of subtropical, temperate, boreal, and arctomontane taxa. Among the arctomontane species recorded in this study was Anthelia juratzkana; among the temperate species was Dactyloradula brunnea, and subtropical species were Cavicularia densa, Pallavicinia subciliata, Wiesnerella denudata, and Megaceros flagellaris. A valuable species as first recorded for the Jeju Island is Cryptocoleopsis imbricata. The distribution patterns of these species suggest that the flora of Jeju Island is a meeting place between boreal and subtropical floras. We recorded 222 taxa belonging to 45 families, 80 genera, 209 species, 9 subspecies, and 4 varieties. Among these, 86 species are reported as new to the flora of Jeju Island. 3. The Effect of Personnel Characteristics in the Internal Accounting Control System on Discretionary Tax Accruals: Evidence from Korea.

This study examines whether the characteristics of personnel in a firm's internal accounting control system (IACS) and auditor characteristics control managers' discretionary behaviour for tax planning. The study uses a sample of 4210 firm‐year observations from 2006 to 2014. The results show that managers' discretionary tax planning cannot be controlled when the personnel in charge of internal accounting control are at an optimum level or higher. On the other hand, when a CPA is included among the personnel, the manager's discretionary behaviour is somewhat controlled. Moreover, the results show that firms audited by a large accounting firm also control the manager's discretionary tax planning to some extent. Unlike previous studies that examine the effects of IACS on discretionary accruals mostly in terms of book income, this study's contribution is an examination of the effects of the characteristics of personnel in IACS on the relationship between discretionary book‐tax conformity accruals and discretionary book‐only accruals that can be used when the manager establishes a tax plan. Additionally, this study also provides indirect evidence that the characteristics of auditors and personnel in charge of internal accounting perform a monitoring role that controls the manager's opportunistic behaviour. This study examines whether the characteristics of personnel in a firm's internal accounting control system and auditor characteristics control managers' discretionary behaviour for tax planning. 4. An Investigation of the Safety Performance of Roundabouts in Korea Based on a Random Parameters Count Model.

It is well known that a roundabout is an efficient and safe intersection. However, the safety is generally influenced by the given various conditions. This study analyzed the effects of the geometric and traffic flow conditions on traffic accident frequency at roundabouts, constructed in Korea since 2010. Many previous studies have investigated the efficiency and safety effects of roundabout installation. However, not many studies have analyzed the specific influences of individual geometric elements and traffic flow conditions of roundabouts. Accordingly, this study analyzed the effects of various influencing variables on traffic accident frequency based on a random parameter count model using traffic accident data in 199 roundabouts. Using random parameters that can take into account unobserved heterogeneity, this study tried to make up for the weakness of the fixed parameters model, which constrains estimated parameters to be fixed across all observations. A total of eight variables were determined to be the main influencing factors on traffic accident frequency including the number and width of entry lanes, the presence of pedestrian crossings, the width of the circulatory lanes, the presence of central islands, the radius and number of entry lanes, and traffic volume influence accident frequency. Objective: To investigate school performance of childhood cancer survivors focusing on the child's functioning, including peer relationships, school attendance, and academic achievement.Methods: We studied 241 children from 15 institutions in Korea between 2015 and 2016. The self-reported paper-and-pencil questionnaires were used.Results: Approximately 22% of the survivors suffered from lack of friends. Bullying was reported by 30% of survivors. Survivors who returned to primary school reported a higher incidence of bullying compared with survivors who returned to middle or high school (P = 0.03). The percentage of children who missed classes more than 4 days in a month was higher in survivors with brain tumors than those with other tumors (P = 0.04). Approximately 41% of children reported learning difficulty. After returning to school, 53% of the patients reported that they had lower overall mark averages than they had before. Patients who returned to high school showed the highest rate of repeating a grade and the lowest rate of achieving high academic marks. The school marks in the Korean (P = 0.03), English (P = 0.04), and physical education (P = 0.04) were worse for the children with brain tumors than for the children with other tumors.Conclusion: We found that 20% to 25% of survivors experienced peer-related difficulties upon returning to school. Patients who return to school, especially high school, should be provided more educational support to overcome low academic achievement. Particular concern is needed to the patients with brain tumors, who are at risk for significant academic and social difficulties and therefore may require more intensive support in school. 6. Is insufficient sleep duration associated with suicidal behavior in Korean adolescents?

The second leading cause of death among Korean adolescents was suicide in 2014. We assessed the relationship between sleep duration and suicidal behavior (ideation, planning and attempt) using data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS). KYRBS is an anonymous online survey in self-reporting format that investigates the health status of middle and high school students. Weekly sleep duration was divided into six groups (more than 8, 7-8, 6-7, 5-6, 4-5 h, less than 4 h). We compared the more-than-8-h group with others for sleep duration-associated suicidal behavior. Results showed that even though the confidence interval for the odds ratio for some sleep duration groups was not significant, there was a statistically significant inverse positive trend of suicidal behavior (ideation, planning and attempt) with the sleep duration groups ( P value for trend ≤0.001). In conclusion, this study found that short average weekday sleep duration among Korean adolescents was associated with suicidal behavior independent of various confounding factors, which includes depressed mood. 7. Gradual increase of chronic lymphocytic leukemia incidence in Korea, 1999-2010: comparison to plasma cell myeloma.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and plasma cell myeloma (PCM) have markedly higher incidences in Western countries compared with Asian countries. To track the change of incidence in Korea, we investigated the 12-year incidence and compared findings with national cancer databases in Taiwan and the United States (US). The age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs) of CLL and PCM in Korea during 1999-2010 were 0.13/100 000 and 1.23/100 000. The annual percentage change (APC) in the incidence rates were 4.17% for CLL and 4.68% for PCM. These increasing trends were similar findings to Taiwan. In the US, the ASRs of CLL and PCM were 3.21/100 000 and 3.97/100 000. The APC of CLL and PCM incidence rate were 0.68% and 0.50%. The incidence rates of CLL in Korea gradually increased during the study period, while those of PCM showed a steeper ascent. In contrast, the incidence rates of CLL and PCM in the US appear to be stable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the molecular genotypes of ciprofloxacin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and their characteristics according to the genetic lineages. For 160 K. pneumoniae collected in 2013, ciprofloxacin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined by agar dilution method. The genotypes of ciprofloxacin-resistant K. pneumoniae isolates were determined by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and wzi gene typing. The presence of plasmid-mediated resistance determinants [ qnrA, qnrB, qnrS, aac(6′)-Ib-cr, blaCTX-M, and blaSHV] was investigated. The gyrA and parC genes were sequenced. Fifty-seven isolates showed ciprofloxacin resistance. By MLST, four major sequence types (STs) or clonal complexes (CCs), that is, ST307, CC11, CC147, and ST15, were found and the two most prevalent STs were ST307 (14/57, 24.6%) and ST11 (12/57, 21.1%). By wzi gene sequencing, 46 of the 57 isolates could be differentiated. All the ST307 isolates had an identical wzi sequence and harbored qnrB. The majority of them harbored aac(6′)-Ib-cr (85.7%) and CTX-M-15 (92.9%). In contrast, 12 ST11 isolates were divided into five sublineages by wzi sequence and qnrB, qnrS, and aac(6′)-Ib-cr were carried by nine, seven, and three isolates, respectively. They harbored SHV-type extended-spectrum β-lactamase more frequently than CTX-M-15 (nine and four isolates, respectively). The prevalence of CTX-M-15, qnrB1, and aac(6′)-Ib-cr was significantly higher in ST307 than in ST11 ( p=0.003, p=0.000, and p=0.002, respectively). Both clones had identical amino acid substitution in gyrA (S83I) and parC (S80I). K. pneumoniae ST307 and ST11 were the two most common clones, and the ST307 isolates were highly homogeneous, suggesting their recent emergence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study describes the genetic and antigenic characterization of a newly emerging porcine circovirus type 2b (PCV2b) mutant first isolated in cases of vaccine failure in Korea. The full genome of the PCV2b isolates (SNUVR130689 and SNUVR140004) is 1,767 base pairs (bp) in length. The size of ORF1 is 945 bp, encoding a protein of 314 amino acids (aa), and the size of ORF2 is 705 bp, encoding a protein of 234 aa, which is 1 aa longer than that of the common PCV2 (233 aa). Korean PCV2b mutant strains had higher levels of nucleotide sequence identity to other PCV2b mutant strains (99.7-99.8 %) than to reference PCV2a (94.5-95.0 %) and PCV2b (95.5-96.1 %) strains. There was no difference in antigenic reactivity among PCV2a, PCV2b and PCV2b mutant strains to the polyclonal and monoclonal PCV2a antibodies. PCV2b mutant strains have distinct genetic characteristics but similar antigenic reactivity when compared to common PCV2a and 2b strains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. The benefits of proton beam craniospinal irradiation (PrBCSI) in children have been extensively reported in dosimetric studies. However, there is limited clinical evidence supporting the use of PrBCSI. We compared the acute toxicity of PrBCSI relative to that of conventional photon beam CSI (PhBCSI) in children with brain tumours. Material and methods. We prospectively evaluated the haematological and gastrointestinal toxicities in 30 patients who underwent PrBCSI between April 2008 and December 2012. As a reference group, we retrospectively evaluated the medical records of 13 patients who underwent PhBCSI between April 2003 and April 2012. The median follow-up time from starting CSI was 22 months (range 2-118 months). The mean irradiation dose was 32.1 Gy (range 23.4-39.6 Gy) and 29.4 CGE (cobalt grey equivalents; range 19.8-39.6), in the PrBCSI and PhBCSI groups, respectively (p = 0.236). Results. There was no craniospinal fluid space relapse after curative therapy in either group of patients. Thrombocytopenia was less severe in the PrBCSI group than in the PhBCSI group (p = 0.012). The recovery rates of leukocyte and platelet counts measured one month after treatment were significantly greater in the PrBCSI group than in the PhBCSI group (p = 0.003 and p = 0.010, respectively). Diarrhoea was reported by 23% of patients in the PhBCSI group versus none in the PrBCSI group (p = 0.023). Conclusions. The incidence rates of thrombocytopenia and diarrhoea were lower in the PrBCSI group than in the PhBCSI group. One month after completing treatment, the recovery from leukopenia and thrombocytopenia was better in patients treated with PrBCSI than in those treated with PhBCSI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives. The aim of this study was to determine whether the presence of peripheral arthritis can affect radiographic structural damage in patients with AS.Methods. A total of 915 subjects comprising 363 patients with a history of peripheral arthritis and 552 patients without a history of peripheral arthritis obtained from the Observation Study of the Korean SpA Registry (OSKAR) were analysed looking at the relationship of peripheral arthritis history in a cross-sectional survey as well as the radiographic damage score according to the presence or absence of peripheral arthritis. Radiographs and clinical information were available for 501 subjects (205 peripheral arthritis patients and 296 without peripheral arthritis) at a mean follow-up of 2.7 years. The modified Stoke AS Spinal Score (mSASSS) was examined by two experienced radiologists to validate the results. Reliability was evaluated using the intraclass correlation coefficient for each radiograph.Results. The agreement between the two readers regarding the mSASSS was good. On simple comparison there was a significant difference in the mSASSS between patients with a history of peripheral arthritis and those without [mean 14.62 (s.e.m. 0.83) vs 18.78 (0.79), P < 0.001]. The mSASSS change was stratified according to the presence or absence of peripheral arthritis at baseline. After adjusting for multiple comparisons by Bonferroni correction, the patients with peripheral arthritis had less mSASSS change than those without peripheral arthritis [3.08 (s.e.m. 0.61) vs 5.18 (0.47), P = 0.008].Conclusion. This study compared children who experience attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms but do not meet criteria (i.e., subthreshold ADHD) with those with the full syndrome and healthy controls. Presence of ADHD symptoms was determined in a nationwide community sample of 921 children, aged 8-11 years. The main outcome measures comprised attentional symptoms, comorbidity profiles, academic performance, and neurocognitive ability (i.e., ADHD Rating Scale, Child Behavior Checklist, Learning Disability Evaluation Scale, and Stroop Color-Word Test, respectively). Subthreshold ADHD was equally prevalent in boys and girls, and more prevalent in low-income families. Throughout all the outcome measurements, subthreshold ADHD was both a significantly milder condition than full syndrome ADHD and a significantly more severe condition than non-ADHD status. The findings were consistent across the total as well as the subtest scores, and after correction for multiple comparisons ( p < 0.0017). Children with subthreshold ADHD were found to experience significant symptoms and functional impairments. The results of this study support the clinical relevance of subthreshold ADHD in a childhood population. Subthreshold diagnostic criteria for ADHD may be more sensitive in detecting ADHD symptoms in girls than the full syndrome criteria, and subthreshold clinical, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms of ADHD may occur in a subset of children who are possibly more sensitive to their environment. Further consideration about the diagnostic threshold for ADHD may particularly benefit girls and children in low-income families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

14. Cancer Incidence and Survival among Adolescents and Young Adults in Korea.

Background: In Korea, cancer is the third leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults (AYAs). However, cancer incidence and survival trends among AYAs (15–29 years) have never been studied in Korea. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the incidence and relative survival rates and their trends among AYAs in Korea. Materials and Methods: Cancer incidence data from 1999–2010 were obtained from the Korea Central Cancer Registry (KCCR). Each cancer was classified into subgroups according to the National Cancer Institute Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) AYA site recode. Percent distributions, age-specific incidence rates, age-standardized incidence rates per million, and annual percent changes (APCs) were calculated for AYAs according to sex. Five-year relative survival rates were estimated for cases diagnosed between 1993 and 2010 and followed up to 2011. Results: The age-standardized incidence rates of all cancers combined were 196.4 and 367.8 per million for males and females, respectively (male-to-female (M/F) ratio: 0.5). The age-standardized incidence rates increased from 208.7 per million in 1999 to 396.4 per million in 2010, and the APC was 6.3% (P<0.001). The five most common cancers among AYAs were thyroid carcinoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, stomach carcinoma, breast carcinoma, and acute myeloid leukemia. In males, the 5-year relative survival rate improved, from 46.5% in 1993–1995 to 75.9% in 2006–2010. In females, the 5-year relative survival rate also improved, from 66.7% in 1993–1995 to 89.1% in 2006–2010. Conclusions: Our study showed increases in cancer incidence and improvements in the 5-year relative survival rate among Korean AYAs. This study also provides additional data regarding temporal and geographic trends in cancer that may enhance future efforts to identify factors affecting cancer incidence and responses to treatment among AYAs. Amphibian populations have been decreasing in urban freshwater systems in Korea. To elucidate the biological safety of treated wastewater effluent (TWE) in the Tancheon basin, the capital area of Korea, a 7-d-exposure Bombina orientalis embryo developmental toxicity assay was examined during the breeding season. In March, there were no significant differences in embryonic survival or malformation among the water samples. In July, following monsoon precipitation, embryonic lethality in TWE was significantly higher than in the upstream water sample. Malformation in TWE and TWE-mixed waters was significantly higher than in the control and upstream water samples. Tail muscle height of tadpoles also significantly decreased in TWE and TWE-mixed waters. Heavy metals were not detected in any samples. Total nitrogen, total phosphorous, and chemical oxygen demand in TWE markedly increased together with a decrease in dissolved oxygen in July. The increase in organic and inorganic loading following precipitation could have made TWE and TWE-mixed water not suitable for embryonic development. Though being managed based on physicochemical criteria, the water quality of TWE may not be sufficient to assure normal development of amphibian embryos. An amphibian developmental toxicity assay would be helpful for the water-quality management of TWE and urban freshwater systems in Korea. Dental arch form is an important part of dental orthodontic practice. Distance-based clustering methods are often used to find standard arch forms. In particular, S-J. Lee, S.I. Lee, J. Lim, H-J. (2010), to appear] propose a1-type distance which is invariant to the location-shift and the rotational transformation. Despite the popularity of the distance-based methods, little attention is given to the choice of the distance which has a great influence on final clusters. We have three goals in this paper. First, we study the properties of the1-type distance by Leeet al.(2010). Second, we propose a bootstrap-based procedure to evaluate quantitatively how good the clusters are. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of reintroducing oxaliplatin to patients with colorectal cancer who developed mild hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs). Methods: A retrospective review was performed of 204 patients who received oxaliplatin-based chemotherapies between January 2003 and August 2009. Desensitization was not used. Results: A total of 44 patients (21.6%) were found to have developed HSRs to oxaliplatin. After the occurrence of an HSR, a mean of three courses of oxaliplatin (range 1-8) were introduced. Following the initial episode, oxaliplatin was reintroduced to 39 patients, resulting in HSR relapse in 89.7% of the patients, including 4 patients (10.3%) with grade 3 reactions. After the second re-exposure of oxaliplatin to 22 patients, HSRs were exhibited in 81.8%, including 2 patients (9.1%) who developed grade 3 reactions. After the third and subsequent re-exposures in 12 patients, all except 1 of the patients developed mild reactions. A total of 7 patients (17.9%) exhibited severe reactions along with the progress of re-exposure. Conclusion: We observed that the majority of patients who experienced mild HSRs to oxaliplatin developed mild reactions on multiple re-exposures, suggesting that it may be feasible to continue oxaliplatin without using desensitization when tolerable after mild reactions. © 2013 S. Objective MicroRNAs (miRNAs), small noncoding RNA molecules, are involved in the pathogenesis of various diseases such as cancer and arthritis. The aim of this study was to determine whether miR-127-5p regulates interleukin-1β (IL-1β)-induced expression of matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP-13) and other catabolic factors in human chondrocytes. Methods Expression of miR-127-5p and MMP-13 by normal and osteoarthritic (OA) human cartilage was determined using real-time polymerase chain reaction. The effect of miR-127-5p on MMP-13 expression was evaluated using transient transfection of human chondrocytes or chondrogenic SW-1353 cells with miR-127-5p or its antisense inhibitor (anti-miR-127-5p). MMP-13 protein production was quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and the involvement of miR-127-5p in IL-1β-mediated catabolic effects was examined by immunoblotting. MicroRNA-127-5p binding with the putative site in the 3′-untranslated region (3′-UTR) of MMP-13 messenger RNA (mRNA) was validated by luciferase reporter assay. Results There was a significant reduction in miR-127-5p expression in OA cartilage compared with normal cartilage. Up-regulation of MMP-13 expression by IL-1β was correlated with down-regulation of miR-127-5p expression in human chondrocytes. MicroRNA-127-5p suppressed IL-1β-induced MMP-13 production as well as the activity of a reporter construct containing the 3′-UTR of human MMP-13 mRNA. In addition, mutation of the miR-127-5p binding site in the 3′-UTR of MMP-13 mRNA abolished miR-127-5p-mediated repression of reporter activity. Conversely, treatment with anti-miR-127-5p remarkably increased reporter activity and MMP-13 production. Interestingly, the IL-1β-induced activation of JNK, p38, and NF-κB and expression of MMP-1 and cyclooxygenase 2 were significantly inhibited by miR-127-5p. Background Human-to-swine transmission of the pandemic H1N1 2009 [A(H1N1)pdm09] virus in pig populations resulted in reassortment events with endemic swine influenza viruses worldwide. Objective We investigated whether A(H1N1)pdm09-derived reassortant viruses are present in South Korea and sought to determine the pathogenic potential of the novel swine viruses. Methods Pig lung tissues were collected from commercially slaughtered pigs. Isolated swine influenza viruses were genetically analyzed and characterized in vitro and in vivo. Results We identified reassortant H3N2 (H3N2pM-like) and H3N1 swine viruses containing A(H1N1)pdm09-like segments in Korean pigs that are genetically closely related to strains recently detected in pigs and humans in North America. Although the H3N2pM-like and novel H3N1 reassortants demonstrated efficient replication in mice and ferrets, all the H3N1 strains exhibited growth advantage over the representative H3N2pM-like virus in human airway cells. Interestingly, A/swine/Korea/ CY02-07/2012(H3N1) and A/swine/Korea/ CY03-13/2012(H3N1) reassortants were more readily transmitted to respiratory-droplet-contact ferrets compared with the H3N2pM-like (A/swine/Korea/ CY02-10/2012) isolate. Furthermore, serologic evaluation showed poor antigenicity to contemporary reference human seasonal H3N2 vaccine strains. Conclusions We report here for the first time the isolation of H3N2pM-like viruses outside North America and of novel reassortant swine H3N1 viruses with A(H1N1)pdm09-derived genes. Apart from further complicating the genetic diversity of influenza A viruses circulating in domestic pigs, our data also indicate that these strains could potentially pose threat to public health asserting the need for continuous virus monitoring in these ecologically important hosts. Background Bisphenol A ( BPA) has been shown to affect brain and behavior in rodents and nonhuman primates, but there are few studies focusing on its relationship to human neurobehavior. We aimed to investigate the relationship between environmental exposure to BPA and childhood neurobehavior. Methods Urinary BPA concentrations and behavioral and learning characteristics were assessed in a general population of 1,089 children, aged 8-11 years. The main outcome measures were the Child Behavior Checklist ( CBCL) and the Learning Disability Evaluation Scale ( LDES). Results Urinary levels of BPA were positively associated with the CBCL total problems score and negatively associated with the learning quotient from the LDES. The linear association with the CBCL anxiety/depression score and the quadratic association with the LDES listening score were significant after correction for multiple comparisons. Conclusions Environmental exposure to BPA might be associated with childhood behavioral and learning development. The results suggest possible nonmonotonic relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to examine a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs7639618 of double von Willebrand factor (DVWA) gene for the association with osteoarthritis (OA) susceptibility in Korean cohort. The study was a part of the Korean cohort study. Two thousand four hundred sixty-two subjects aged 50 years and older who were derived from the cohort and who were assessed for OA at the knee were genotyped. The anteroposterior extended-view weight-bearing radiographs of the knees were obtained. Of the subjects, 725 subjects had radiographic OA. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood using a QIAamp DNA Blood Mini Kit (Qiagen, Valencia, CA). Genotyping was performed using High Resolution Melt or the Taq-Man allelic discrimination assay and the Rotor-Gene 6000 (Corbett Research, Sydney,Australia). Associations were tested by calculating the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs), using logistic regression analysis with adjustments for age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). The mean age of the OA patients (females: 554 subjects, 76.4%) was 67.4 (7.9) years. The intraobserver agreement was high for the identification of osteophytes (κ: 0.80) and joint space narrowing (κ: 0.70). There was no significant difference (all P values > 0.05) in the genotype or allele frequencies between the patients with OA and healthy controls. There was also no significant difference when the cases were adjusted by age, gender, and BMI. The associations of DVWA SNPs with OA were noted in previous studies and were not found in the Korean OA cohort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To investigate the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and economic burden of patients with FM syndrome (FMS) and compare the changes in these parameters 3 months before and after FMS diagnosis.Methods. A total of 2098 patients with FMS (1818 previously diagnosed with FMS and 280 newly diagnosed with FMS) were enrolled in this study. The newly diagnosed patients with FMS participated in a 3-month prospective observational study to assess HRQOL and economic burden in terms of direct health-care costs, direct non-health-care costs and indirect costs. HRQOL was estimated using the Short Form 36 Health Survey.Results. Mean (s.d.) scores obtained on the physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) scales by patients with FMS were 34.01 (7.28) and 37.29 (11.17), respectively. The total expenditure for the 3 months before enrolment was $1481 (s.d. $2206). Indirect costs [$1126 (s.d. $2016)] were about three times higher than direct costs [$355 (s.d. $534)]. The PCS and MCS scores increased to 4.03 (s.d. 6.79) and 4.06 (s.d. 10.57), respectively, 3 months after the initial FMS diagnosis (P < 0.001, both). Total expenditure after FMS diagnosis was reduced by $1025 (s.d. $1347) as compared with costs before FMS diagnosis (P < 0.001).Conclusion. Patients with FMS experience a decline in their HRQOL and constitute a significant economic burden on health-service utilization. The improvement in health-related costs and HRQOL after a diagnosis of FMS demonstrates a need for early diagnosis and treatment of FMS to reduce costs and enhance HRQOL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sotos syndrome is an overgrowth syndrome with characteristic facial dysmorphism, variable severity of learning disabilities and macrocephaly with overgrowth. Haploinsufficiency of the nuclear receptor SET domain-containing protein 1 (NSD1) gene located on 5q35 has been implicated as the cause of Sotos syndrome. This study was performed to investigate the mutation spectrum of NSD1 abnormalities and meaningful genotype−phenotype correlations in Korean patients with Sotos syndrome. Eighteen unrelated Korean patients with Sotos syndrome were enrolled for clinical and molecular analyses. Cytogenetic studies were performed to confirm 5q35 microdeletion, and NSD1 sequencing analysis was performed to identify intragenic mutations. NSD1 abnormalities were identified in 15 (83%) patients. Among them, eight patients (53%) had 5q35 microdeletions and the other seven patients (47%) had seven different NSD1 intragenic mutations including four novel mutations. The mutation spectrum of Korean patients with Sotos syndrome was similar to that of previous studies for Japanese patients. Height was significantly shorter and age of walking alone was significantly older in the microdeletion group compared with those in the intragenic mutation group. No significant differences were observed for other clinical characteristics between the microdeletion and intragenic mutation groups. Activation of the upper trapezius, lower trapezius, serratus anterior, and triceps brachii muscles was measured, while center of pressure excursion beneath the hands was simultaneously monitored, during the performance of a push-up exercise on both a stable and an unstable base of support. The activation levels of all muscles were significantly greater for the unstable support surface when compared to those for a stable support surface (p < 0.05). A negative correlation was found between activation of the serratus anterior muscle and center of pressure excursion (r = - 0.64, p < 0.05). Performance of the push-up exercise on an unstable support surface appears to elicit greater muscle activation than a standard push-up exercise performed on a stable support surface. Objective To examine the levels and functions of natural killer (NK) and natural killer T (NKT) cells, investigate relationships between NK and NKT cells, and determine the clinical relevance of NKT cell levels in patients with adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD). Methods Patients with active untreated AOSD (n = 20) and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (n = 20) were studied. NK and NKT cell levels were measured by flow cytometry. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were cultured in vitro with α-galactosylceramide (αGalCer). NK cytotoxicity against K562 cells and proliferation indices of NKT cells were estimated by flow cytometry. Results Percentages and absolute numbers of NKT cells were significantly lower in the peripheral blood of AOSD patients than in that of healthy controls. Proliferative responses of NKT cells to αGalCer were also lower in patients, and this was found to be due to proinflammatory cytokines and NKT cell apoptosis. In addition, NK cytotoxicity was found to be significantly lower in patients than in healthy controls, but NK cell levels were comparable in the 2 groups. Notably, this NKT cell deficiency was found to be correlated with NK cell dysfunction and to reflect active disease status. Furthermore, αGalCer-mediated NK cytotoxicity, showing the interaction between NK and NKT cells, was significantly lower in AOSD patients than in healthy controls. Conclusion These findings demonstrate that NK and NKT cell functions are defective in AOSD patients and suggest that these abnormalities contribute to innate immune dysfunction in AOSD. Objectives To classify general hospitals into homogeneous systematic-risk groups in order to compare cost efficiency and propose peer-group-classification criteria. Data Sources Health care institution registration data and inpatient-episode-based claims data submitted by the Korea National Health Insurance system to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service from July 2007 to December 2009. Study Design Cluster analysis was performed to classify general hospitals into peer groups based on similarities in hospital characteristics, case mix complexity, and service-distribution characteristics. Classification criteria reflecting clustering were developed. To test whether the new peer groups better adjusted for differences in systematic risks among peer groups, we compared the R
2 statistics of the current and proposed peer groups according to total variations in medical costs per episode and case mix indices influencing the cost efficiency. Data Collection A total of 1,236,471 inpatient episodes were constructed for 222 general hospitals in 2008. Principal Findings New criteria were developed to classify general hospitals into three peer groups (large general hospitals, small and medium general hospitals treating severe cases, and small and medium general hospitals) according to size and case mix index. Objective Calcineurin-binding protein 1 (CABIN-1) regulates calcineurin phosphatase activity as well as the activation, apoptosis, and inflammatory responses of fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS), which actively participate in the chronic inflammatory responses in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the mechanism of action of CABIN-1 in FLS apoptosis is not clear. This study was undertaken to define the regulatory role of CABIN-1 in FLS from mice with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). Methods Transgenic mice overexpressing human CABIN-1 in joint tissue under the control of a type II collagen promoter were generated. Expression of human CABIN-1 (hCABIN-1) in joints and FLS was determined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot analysis. The expression of cytokines, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and apoptosis-related genes in FLS was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, gelatin zymography, and RT-PCR, respectively. Joints were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and with tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase for histologic analysis. Results Human CABIN-1-transgenic mice with CIA had less severe arthritis than wild-type mice with CIA, as assessed according to hind paw thickness and histologic features. The milder arthritis was accompanied by significantly enhanced apoptosis in transgenic mice, evidenced by a significantly greater number of TUNEL-positive cells in synovial tissue. Expression of inflammatory cytokines and MMPs in the transgenic mice with CIA was reduced, and they exhibited decreased Akt activation and increased expression of p53, caspase 3, caspase 9, and Bax. Conclusion Our findings demonstrate that hCABIN-1 plays a critical role in promoting apoptosis of FLS and in attenuating inflammation and cartilage and bone destruction in RA. These results help elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms of RA and suggest that CABIN-1 is a potential target for treatment of this disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Red bean, also known as azuki bean [Vigna angularis (Willd.) Ohwi & Ohashi], belongs to a group of legumes (family Fabaceae). The name azuki is a transliteration of the native Japanese name from the Chinese word Shōzu, which means small bean. In Korea, it is known as pat. In total, 178 red bean accessions were taken to analyse the genetic diversity, population structure and gene flow using 39 polymorphic simple sequence repeat markers. A total of 431 alleles were detected, with an average of 11 alleles per locus, among the 178 tested red bean accessions. Forty-six specific alleles were identified with 20 loci. Locus CEDG090 had the highest number (n = 22) of alleles, whereas only two alleles were observed at loci CEDG144 and CEDC018. The proportion of different alleles for microsatellite loci was analysed using a microsatellite toolkit. In locus CEDG029, one allele was shared in all the three groups of varieties and species, and three alleles were shared between the wild ancestors and cultivated varieties, while in locus CEDG090, one allele was shared in all the three groups and 12 alleles were shared between the wild ancestors and cultivated varieties. Our findings describe the genetic relationships and population structure of the red bean in Korea and will be useful for designing effective breeding programmes and broadening the genetic base of commercial varieties. Abstract: The Oriental genus Cymbidium contains some of the most important and popular species of ornamental orchids in Korea. Genetic characterization of Cymbidium is vital for its conservation and management, as well as for understanding the genetic relationships among accessions. Among 100 tested accessions, 226 alleles were detected with an average of 16.1 alleles per simple sequence repeat locus; the number of alleles ranged from 28 for the KNU-CC-32 locus to 7 for KNU-CC-25. The allele size ranged from 103 to 380bp. Thirteen loci were deviated from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, and showed highly significant linkage disequilibrium (P <0.01). These results indicate that influencing disturbance in the Cymbidium population, such as natural selection and/or human intervention (i.e., plant breeding), are taking place among the species in Korea. The values for heterozygosity ranged from 0.000 to 0.969, with a mean value of 0.402. The average gene diversity and polymorphism information content values were 0.679 and 0.656, respectively, and ranged from 0.223 (KNU-CC-52) to 0.936 (KNU-CC-32) and from 0.219 (KNU-CC-52) to 0.933 (KNU-CC-32), respectively. All Cymbidium accessions were put into three main groups, and no evidence of mixed population ancestry was observed among the three populations identified. Cymbidium sinensis is not as well distributed and abundant as C. goeringii in Korea. Cymbidium goeringii is endemic in Korea. The genetic diversity in Cymbidium is not related to geographical area, which indicates that the species are randomly distributed in Korea. One of the major occupational hazards of working in military service is being subjected to intense impulse noise. We analyzed the clinical presentation of acoustic traumas, induced by mass rifle gunshot noise during military training, in unprotected patients. We evaluated 189 soldiers who had otologic symptoms after rifle shooting exercises without using any hearing protection. All soldiers had been training on the K2 rifle. We took medical histories; conducted physical examinations and hearing evaluations (pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, and impedence audiometry); and distributed the Newmann's Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) survey. In addition, we evaluated a normal control group of 64 subjects of similar age who had never fired a rifle. In the patient group, the most common and irritating reported symptom was tinnitus (94.2%), and the average THI score in the patient group was 39.51 ± 14.87, which was significantly higher than the control group score (0.56 ± 3.94) (p < 0.001). Average outcomes of post-exposure air conduction thresholds were 21.33 ± 13.25 dB HL in the affected ears. These levels also were significantly higher than those of the control group (9.16 ± 4.07dB HL) (p < 0.001). Hearing loss was most prominent at high frequencies. An asymmetry of hearing loss related to head position during shooting was not observed. Acoustic trauma induced by gunshot noise can cause permanent tinnitus and hearing loss. Background and Aims: Researchers have not clearly described the clinical and pathogenetic features of hypoganglionosis and adult-onset Hirschsprung's disease, which cause pseudo-obstruction or intractable constipation. We conducted this study to explore these features of hypoganglionosis and adult-onset Hirschsprung's disease in Korean patients.Methods: We enrolled 24 patients pathologically confirmed as having hypoganglionosis and 11 as having adult-onset Hirschsprung's disease. We recruited 26 subjects who had undergone operation for nonobstructive colon cancer and 45 healthy volunteers as controls. We described their clinical features, investigated ganglion cells and interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC), and analyzed RET, EDNRB, EDN3, and SOX10 genes.Results: We classified hypoganglionosis patients into two groups: type I (focal type, n = 13), with focally narrowed transition zone (TZ); and type II (diffuse type, n = 11), without transition zone. Hypoganglionosis patients had significantly fewer ganglion cells than the controls, and those cells were scarcer in the transition zone than in the proximal dilated area (P < 0.05). The ICC numbers in both diseases were significantly lower than in controls; however, they were similar between transition zone and the proximal dilated area in hypoganglionosis. In adult-onset Hirschsprung's disease, two significant intronic RET polymorphic variants, IVS14-24G>A and IVS19+47T>C, were significantly associated with adult-onset Hirschsprung's disease (P = 0.0122 and 0.0295, respectively), but not with hypoganglionosis.Conclusions: Hypoganglionosis and adult-onset Hirschsprung's disease have different pathophysiologic characteristics, although their clinical presentations are similar. We suggest that there are two subgroups of hypoganglionosis: those with or without a focally narrowed transition zone with a profoundly diminished number of ganglion cells. Abstract: Gaucher disease (GD) is an autosomal recessive glycolipid lysosomal storage disease caused by a deficiency of the β-glucocerebrosidase enzyme (GBA). Allelic heterogeneity in GD has been well described. To date, more than 270 different GBA mutations have been reported. In order to determine the GBA mutation spectrum in Korean GD patients, we performed GBA mutation analysis of Korean patients and identified 72 GBA mutant alleles from 36 unrelated patients (100% identification), including 60 single-nucleotide substitutions, 6 single-nucleotide deletions, 4 recombinants, 1 splicing error, and 1 complex allele. N370S, the most common GBA mutation, was not detected, and most of the Korean GBA mutations were previously known to be rare, with the exception of L444P (~21%). Three mutations, P201H, F347L+L444P, and c.630delC, are novel. Examination of the GBA mutant alleles found in 6 ethnic groups revealed that the prevalences of GBA mutant alleles in Korean patients are very different from those seen in Jewish, non-Jewish Caucasian, and Italian patients, but similar to those seen in Japanese and Chinese patients. The identification of missing casualties of the Korean War (1950-1953) has been performed using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) profiles, but recent advances in DNA extraction techniques and approaches using smaller amplicons have significantly increased the possibility of obtaining DNA profiles from highly degraded skeletal remains. Therefore, 21 skeletal remains of Korean War victims and 24 samples from biological relatives of the supposed victims were selected based on circumstantial evidence and/or mtDNA-matching results and were analyzed to confirm the alleged relationship. Cumulative likelihood ratios were obtained from autosomal short tandem repeat, Y-chromosomal STR, and mtDNA-genotyping results, and mainly confirmed the alleged relationship with values over 10. The present analysis emphasizes the value of mini- and Y-STR systems as well as an efficient DNA extraction method in DNA testing for the identification of old skeletal remains. The purposes of the present study were (a) to compare US and Korean 8th graders' mastery of knowledge and skills in the mathematics test of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2003 using a cognitive diagnostic testing method and (b) to find links between teachers' instruction and students' mastery of mathematics knowledge and skills. The participants included 740 US and 439 Korean 8th graders who took the Booklet 3 mathematics test. The results showed substantial differences between the US and Korean students' performance in problem restructuring and reasoning, measurement, and geometry. The most helpful instructional strategy for both Korean and US students was encouraging students' independent problem solving. Abstract: This study was undertaken to evaluate the functional properties of two of the most popular species of edible bamboo shoots in Korea (Phyllostachys pubescens and Phyllostachys nigra). Powdered bamboo shoots were extracted with methanol and an aqueous suspension of the obtained methanol extract was partitioned successively with chloroform, ethyl acetate, and butanol, leaving a residual water extract. All obtained extracts were evaluated for their antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activity, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition activity, and ascorbic acid and phenolic compound content. Methanol and water fractions showed a particularly high ascorbic acid contents. The ethyl acetate fraction contained a high concentration of phenolic compounds. Among all extracts, the ethyl acetate and butanol fractions showed particularly high antioxidant activity. Methanol extract had a significantly higher ACE inhibitory activity than other extracts. Summary: A number of researchers from various regions have reported statistical and clinical studies of facial fractures. The results of those studies show slight differences depending on regional, cultural, social and economic backgrounds. This report presents a statistical analysis of facial fractures occurring over 4 years on Jeju, Korea. The statistics come from the 318 patients who presented to Cheju National University Hospital for facial fractures, and ours is a retrospective study analyzing patient ages, gender, fracture etiology, alcohol involvement and the anatomical site of the fracture. The most common cause of facial fractures on Jeju was violence (40.9%), followed by traffic accidents (17%). The most frequently fractured site was the nasal bone (42.5%). According to the Jeju Statistics Agency, the people of Jeju are highly dependent on alcohol and previous research has reported the close relationship between alcohol consumption and violence. We paid close attention to violence as a primary cause for facial fractures in the cultural and social context of Jeju. Data analysis regarding facial fractures may provide crucial information for recognition of causes and planning for prevention. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Aerosol composition change between dust storm and non-dust storm periods in spring is studied using the total suspended particle data measured at Gosan, a background area in Korea. The concentrations of eight inorganic ions and 12 elements were analyzed for the TSP samples collected from March 1992 to May 2006. Two-step statistical analyses were carried out for the data: F test and t test. The concentrations of anthropogenic ionic species showed increasing trend since 2003. The absolute concentrations of most anthropogenic species such as sulfate or nitrate increased (from 7.33 to 9.25 µg m
−3 and from 2.04 to 4.84 µg m−3 , respectively) during the dust storm period. However, the enrichment factors or normalized concentrations based on Al of most anthropogenic species decreased during dust storm period (factor of 0.1–0.5). Abstract: Background: In Korea, the treatment of hypertension and dyslipidemia constitutes an important strategy for the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Objective: This study sought to investigate the cost-effectiveness (from the Korean health care system perspective) of prescribing a proprietary formulation single-tablet fixed-dose combination of amlodipine and atorvastatin (at weighted mean doses of 5 mg and 10.25 mg, respectively) to all eligible patients aged ≥45 years for the primary prevention of CVD (ie, coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke) in Korea, compared with currently observed patterns of blood-pressure and lipid-lowering medication prescription and use. Methods: A Markov model was developed with 4 health states: alive without CVD, alive with CVD, dead from CVD, and dead from non-CVD causes. The model population comprised 244 Koreans aged ≥45 years from the 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES) without a history of myocardial infarction (MI) or stroke who met current criteria for both blood-pressure and lipidlowering treatment. From a 2008 baseline, follow-up was simulated for 40 years. Cardiovascular risk was estimated for each subject individually using a multivariate, Asian population—specific equation, and updated with ongoing cycles. Decision analysis compared the effects of prescribing the fixed-dose combination to all subjects versus currently observed patterns of treatment. Data regarding the blood-pressure and lipid-lowering efficacies of combination therapy were drawn from the Respond trial. Costs of the fixed-dose combination tablet and CVD were sourced from pharmaceutical pricing lists and Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Services estimates, respec tively. Utility values for CVD were obtained from a large Korean utility study. Results: In the model, of the 244 treatment-eligible subjects, 126 (51.6%) and 13 (5.3%) were taking blood-pressure and lipid-lowering therapy, respectively. Use of single-tablet fixed-dose combination amlodipine and atorvastatin by all subjects was associated with estimated incremental cost-effectiveness ratios of 7,773,063 Korean won (KRW) per qualityadjusted life-year gained and 10,378,230 KRW per overall life-year gained (1300 KRW ≈ US $1). Sensitivity and uncertainty analyses indicated these results to be robust. Conclusions: In this model, based on data from the 2005 KNHNES, hypertension and dyslipidemia were undertreated among Koreans aged ≥45 years without a history of MI or stroke. The administration of single-tablet fixed-dose combination amlodipine and atorvastatin to all such individuals was likely to represent a cost-effective means of preventing first-onset CVD (ie, coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke) in this subgroup, compared with current patterns of treatment. Abstract: A strictly aerobic, Gram-positive, motile, coccoid-shaped, halotolerant actinobacterium (10% NaCl, w/v), designated MSL-23
T , was isolated from a soil sample on Bigeum Island, Korea. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the isolate belonged to the genus Nocardioides, with the highest sequence similarity (95.63%) being to Nocardioides kribbensis KCTC 19038T . The major menaquinone was MK-8(H4 ), and the predominant cellular fatty acids were i-C16:0 , ai-C17:0 , C18:1 ω9c and 10-methyl-C16:0 . The DNA G+C content was 69.7mol%. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain MSL 23T and its chemotaxonomic properties showed it to be unique in the genus Nocardioides. Phenotypic characteristics distinguished strain MSL-23T from other Nocardioides species. On the basis of the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data strain MSL-23T represents a novel species, for which the name Nocardioides halotolerans sp. nov. is proposed, with MSL-23T (=KCTC 19274T =DSM 19273T ) as the type strain. Mutations in the Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) gene are responsible for X-linked agammaglob-ulinemia (XLA). We identified BTK mutations in six patients with presumed XLA from unrelated Korean families. Four out of six mutations were novel: two missense mutations (P565T, C154Y), a point mutation in a splicing donor site (IVS11+1G > A), and a large deletion (a 6.1-kb deletion including BTK exons 11-18). The large deletion, identified by long-distance PCR, revealed Alu-Alu mediated recombination extended from an Alu sequence in intron 10 to another Alu sequence in intron 18, spanning a distance of 6.1 kb. The two known mutations consisted of one missense (G462D) mutation, and a point mutation in a splicing acceptor site (IV-S7-9A>G). Background and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between handgrip strength (HGS) and quality of life (QOL) in patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis (OA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Materials and Methods: We enrolled 13,966 from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2015 to 2018. All participants underwent the health-related QOL assessment using the European Quality of Life Scale-Five dimensions (EQ-5D) and measured the HGS. The weak HGS was defined as the lowest quartile. We investigated the difference in QOL between patients with arthritis and the healthy control group and evaluated the correlation between weak HGS and QOL in arthritis patients. Results: Those diagnosed with OA or RA had significantly lower QOL than healthy controls. The weak HGS was significantly correlated with lower QOL in arthritis patients. Among OA patients, those with weak HGS revealed significantly higher odds ratios for impairment in all dimensions of EQ-5D. RA patients with weak HGS had significantly higher odds ratios for impairment in dimensions of mobility, self-care, usual activity, and pain/discomfort than those with normal HGS. Conclusions: These results suggest that weak HGS is significantly associated with decreased QOL in patients with arthritis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: LA, altered white matter signal intensities seen on MR brain scans, has been shown to be associated with cerebrovascular risk factors and microangiopathy. Although the cerebrovascular system is also a target for sex hormones, little is known about the association between the two. In this study, we investigated the association between male sex hormone levels and LA in old men by examining free testosterone index (FTI), total testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and LA in 342 Korean men (aged 50–80 years). The odds ratios (ORs) for LA were calculated using multivariate logistic regression. The ORs (95% CIs) for LA were 1.06 (1.01–1.10) for FTI, 1.01 (0.93–1.10) for total testosterone, and 0.97 (0.94–1.01) for SHBG after adjusting for age, smoking status, alcohol intake, regular exercise, BMI, mean arterial blood pressure, resting heart rate, white blood cell counts, fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, hypertension medications, diabetes medications, and hyperlipidemia medications. The results of this study indicate that high FTI is independently associated with greater prevalence of LA in older men. Accordingly, a higher FTI may be an additional surrogate marker in assessing LA. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt. is a self-pollinating annual species and is widely cultivated in China, Korea and Japan as an economic crop and a source of medicine and spices. In this study, we sequenced one cultivar variety (PF98095) of P. frutescens (L.) var. frutescens Britt., which was assembled as reference and other three varieties (PF11109, weedy of var. frutescens , PF06336 and PF06353, cultivars of varieties crispa ) in order to carry out comparative expression profiling within cultivar and weedy in varieties frutescens and between varieties frutescens and varieties crispa of cultivar type in P. frutescens . Assembly of PF98095, annotation mapping, DEG (differentially expressed gene) profiling, and comparative analysis were performed. We found that more than 65% of the reads were mapped to the reference of P. frutescens gene set. Moreover, we detected 22,962 DEGs in the weedy variety compared to the cultivar, and also, 22,138 and 23,845 DEGs were identified in two cultivars according to the reference, respectively. The DEGs and functional classification were developed to analyze the differences between weedy and cultivar and between varieties frutescens and varieties crispa of Perilla . Furthermore, candidate genes for the different color and seed size of Perilla were identified that could be further investigated in future study. Abstract: For highly degraded DNA samples of forensic casework, new miniSTR systems have been developed to supplement the current STR systems. In the present study, nine miniSTR loci were analyzed in 300 unrelated Koreans using three multiplex PCR systems (multiplex I: D10S1248, D14S1434 and D22S1045; multiplex II: D1S1677, D2S441 and D4S2364; and multiplex III: D3S3053, D6S474 and D20S482), and allele frequencies and forensic parameters were calculated. These data demonstrated that D10S1248, D2S441, D22S1045, D14S1434, and D6S474 are as highly informative as the CODIS STRs suggesting that the miniSTRs could be useful for forensic analysis of degraded DNA. Abstract: Objective: To examine the association between screen time and the metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a nationally representative sample of children and adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 845 children and adolescents (10–18 years of age) from the 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES). Screen time was defined as TV time+computer time. The definition of MetS was based on the modified criteria used by the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III, using age- and sex-specific values for some of the criteria. Results: In comparison with the children and adolescents in the ST-Q1 (≤16h for a week), the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for MetS of subjects in the ST-Q4 (≥35h for a week) was 2.23 (95% CI, 1.02–4.86) after the adjustment for age, household income, and residence area. Moreover, screen time for a weekend day was also strongly associated with the prevalence of MetS, but not for a weekday. Conclusions: Screen time was independently associated with an increased prevalence risk of MetS in children and adolescents in Korea. Public health intervention to reduce screen time particularly for a weekend may be needed to prevent pediatric MetS in Korea. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In 2005, Korea’s first Superconducting Gravimeter (SG) was installed at MunGyung (MG). For the installation of the SG, a new measuring hut with a grounded pier was built. The SG has been successfully recording since April 2005. To monitor the groundwater level changes around the SG, a borehole was drilled in September 2005. For analyzing the gravity data, the SG calibration factor of −64.548μgal/V (μgal=10−8 m/s2) was determined by a parallel registration with an absolute gravimeter. The noise magnitude (NM) at the MG site was determined and compared with other SG stations and the New Low Noise Model. The MG site can be classified within the NM of other SG stations. Additionally, noise caused by misaligned instrumental tilt has been investigated and spectrally analyzed. Covering the instrument with a polystyrene box has resulted in a decrease of this noise. After preprocessing, the tidal analysis has been performed and compared with the Wahr–Dehant tidal model parameters. Non-tidal gravity variations, caused by atmospheric pressure and ground water level variations, were calculated. According to the FES2002 ocean tide model, the ocean loading at MG site was calculated. All known gravity effects (i.e. solid Earth tides, polar motion, atmospheric pressure and ground water level induced gravity variations, and the ocean loading gravity effect) were then subtracted from the SG measured gravity data. The remaining gravity variations (gravity residuals) were spectrally analyzed for detection of unknown gravity effects. Co-seismic gravity changes were detected by the SG for earthquakes with epicenters within a distance of about 100km from the MG station. The largest detected co-seismic gravity change was 0.06μgal.
