The proportion of aggressive T/NK-cell lymphoma in Korea is larger than in the West, and it shows a lower response to conventional chemotherapy and poorer survival than diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. This study was undertaken to evaluate the response rate and survival and to document the prognostic factors in patients with T/NK-cell lymphoma who have undergone high-dose therapy (HDT). Eligibility for the study was a mature T/NK-cell lymphoma with initially poor risk (as high or high intermediate risk on age-adjusted International Prognostic Index) or relapsed cases. Twenty-eight patients from 6 centers were reviewed retrospectively. The M : F ratio was 20 : 8, and median age was 36 years (range 16 – 60 years). Twelve patients had unspecified peripheral T-cell lymphomas, 7 anaplastic large-cell lymphomas, 6 nasal T/NK-cell lymphomas, and 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphomas. Disease status at transplant were initially poor risk in 15, chemosensitive relapse in 8 and chemoresistant relapse in 5 patients, respectively. A complete reponse (CR) after HDT comprised 20 patients, including 16 with continued CR. Absolute neutrophil count ( > 500/μl) recovered at a median 11 days after autologous stem cell transplantation in 26 patients. Two therapy-related mortalites occurred. Estimated 3-year event-free survival and overall survival (OS) ( ± SE) were 24 ± 9 and 42 ± 10 months, respectively. Only CR status after HDT influenced OS ( P = 0.000). Genetic variants at 1q22 and 10q23 were identified as genetic markers of both gastric cancer and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma susceptibility by two genome-wide association studies. The aim of this study was to determine whether rs4072037A > G in MUC1 at 1q22 and rs2274223A > G in PLCE1 at 10q23 are associated with a risk of gastric cancer in a Korean population. We conducted a large-scale case-control study of 3,245 patients with gastric cancer and 1,700 controls. The allele frequencies of rs4072037G and rs2274223G were 11.2 and 25.5% among patients with gastric cancer, compared with 12.8 and 26.4%, respectively, among controls. We found that the rs4072037 AG genotype was significantly associated with a reduced risk of gastric cancer [odds ratios (OR) = 0.78; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.67-0.91 for AG vs AA]. Compared with the rs2274223 AA genotype, we found a significant association between the rs2274223 AG genotype and a weakly reduced risk of gastric cancer (OR = 0.87; 95% CI = 0.76-0.99 for AG vs AA). Our data suggest that genetic variants at 1q22 and 10q23 play a role in gastric carcinogenesis.

Appropriate pain assessment is very important for managing cancer pain. This study was designed to evaluate the utility of the Korean Cancer Pain Assessment Tool (KCPAT) by assessing changes in the management of cancer pain. The changes in pain intensity, the pattern of drug prescriptions, and the patients' satisfaction with pain control were analyzed after using the KCPAT. The results indicated that pain medicine prescriptions were changed in 194 (51.5%) cases after using the KCPAT, and 69.5% of these changes were affected by the KCPAT. After using the KCPAT, pain intensity as assessed by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS, 0-10cm) decreased (4.31+/-2.35 vs. 3.60+/-2.45, P<0.0001), and the presence of associated symptoms and psychosocial items was significantly reduced. The patients' satisfaction with pain control was improved. Forty-four physicians (89.8%) thought that the KCPAT was useful. The KCPAT improved patients' satisfaction with pain control and was a useful tool for evaluating and managing cancer pain.
