Abstract

The article offers information on a dissertation regarding the impact of tankers' constructive characteristics and operational conditions on accidental oil outflow probability and scale. It was found that 58 out of 120 marine accidents that occurred in Lithuania from 1999 to 2003 took place in Klaipeda port and 48% of all registered accidents are defined as collisions or strandings or groundings. It was assessed that tanker accident followed by oil outflow can happen once per 87 years under current conditions.
