The article discusses women's roles in dagaa fisheries in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. Particular focus is given to the Lake Victoria Fishery in Tanzania. According to the author, the division of labor and systems of control used in this and similar fisheries have deprived women of cultural and economic resources. It is suggested that local and national government should work to legalize women's independent, small-scale, and environmentally sustainable fishing practices. Details related to the sexual exploitation of women in fisheries are presented. Other topics include the introduction of Nile perch to Lake Victoria, women's food and job insecurity, and livelihood adaptation.
