Following the arrival of Tuta absoluta Meyrick in the eastern African subregion in 2012, several studies have shown numerous ecological aspects of its invasion. We investigated the impact of T. absoluta on people's livelihoods across four counties of Kenya. Here, 200 farmers in the country were interviewed in person using semistructured questionnaires. In addition to livelihood surveys, T. absoluta distribution was mapped between 2016 and 2018 to determine its current distribution across four countries (Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda) in the subregion. Albeit a recent invader, T. absoluta is abundant and distributed throughout the subregion and is viewed as the worst invasive alien species of agriculturally sustainable livelihoods by tomato farmers. The arrival of T. absoluta in the subregion has resulted in livelihood losses and increased both the cost of tomato production and frequency of pesticide application. We recommend the implementation of biological control along, with other control measures in an integrated approach, against T. absoluta in the subregion, where its impact on sustainable livelihoods is serious and long-term control strategies are required to curb its detrimental effects., (© The Author(s) 2019. Objective: Using a social ecological framework, this study aimed to establish emerging mental health clinicians and researchers' perspectives about child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) in Africa. Method: Perspectives of 17 participants from Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia, whose professional backgrounds ranged from psychiatry to speech-language therapy, were collected at an African CAMH conference. Data were gathered using open-ended questions, using an online survey. Data were analysed using theoretical thematic analysis. Results: An adapted social ecological framework highlighted: An increased need for commitment from governments to improve CAMH in Africa; and addressing mental health stigma and discrimination through community awareness. The need for specialised CAMH facilities were identified, particularly in the public health sector. The need for multi-sectoral, multi-disciplinary partnerships for advocacy, service delivery, and continuity of care were also identified. Participants emphasised the importance of CAMH awareness, and the role of governments in recognising CAMH needs and using policies to improve CAMH in Africa. Participants were hopeful about the transformation of CAMH on the continent. Conclusion: The participants prioritised government- and community-level awareness to increase the resources and support offered by CAMH services in Africa.

Consumers and prey diversity, their interactions, and subsequent effects on ecosystem function are important for ecological processes but not well understood in high diversity ecosystems such as coral reefs. Consequently, we tested the potential for diversity-effects with a series of surveys and experiments evaluating the influence of browsing herbivores on macroalgae in Kenya's fringing reef ecosystem. We surveyed sites and undertook experiments in reefs subject to three levels of human fishing influence: open access fished reefs, small and recently established community-managed marine reserves, and larger, older government-managed marine reserves. Older marine reserves had a greater overall diversity of herbivores and browsers but this was not clearly associated with reduced macroalgal diversity or abundance. Experiments studying succession on hard substrata also found no effects of consumer diversity. Instead, overall browser abundance of either sea urchins or fishes was correlated with declines in macroalgal cover. An exception was that the absence of a key fish browser genus, Naso, which was correlated with the persistence of Sargassum in a marine reserve. Algal selectivity assays showed that macroalgae were consumed at variable rates, a product of strong species-specific feeding and low overlap in the selectivity of browsing fishes. We conclude that the effects of browser and herbivore diversity are less than the influences of key species, whose impacts emerge in different contexts that are influenced by fisheries management. Consequently, identifying key herbivore species and managing to protect them may assist protecting reef functions.

An examination of an organic extract of the cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula, collected from Wasini Island off the southern Kenyan coast, led to the isolation of the known cyclic depsipeptide antanapeptin A (1), recently isolated from a Madagascan collection of L. majuscula, and a new bioactive cyclic depsipeptide, homodolastatin 16 (2). The structures of these two compounds were determined from NMR and mass spectrometry data. Homodolastatin 16, a higher homologue of the potential anticancer agent dolastatin 16, exhibited moderate activity against oesophageal and cervical cancer cell lines.

The East African Medical Journal which started in 1923 has now reached its 70th year. To what extent has the journal focused the attention of policy and decision makers on the most relevant problems of and solutions for Community Health in Eastern Africa? To answer this question this paper surveys the Journal's publications on Community Health in four eras into which the 70 years can be subdivided. It then tries to match these publications with what has been happening in the political field and in the development of health services related to community health. The conclusion is that the journal has, in this geographical region, been keeping pace with important trends and has been a stimulus to the development of improved and more relevant services for communities. Although the predominant focus has often been on publications based on clinical research in hospital settings, it is hoped that the journal will step up even further its publication of papers related to community health and Primary Health Care. By doing so it can make an even greater contribution to the health and well being of the populations of Eastern Africa and not just to the care of individuals who gain access to medical institutions.
