This article focuses on the paper titled "Behind Our Backs: Teaching Core Values in Social Work Education," presented by Susan Campbell Wesley at the North American Association of Christians in Social Work Convention in Louisville, Kentucky on October 2003. Social work as a profession, is centered around ethical codes that reflect the core values of that particular profession, and failure to live up to the values embodied in the ethical code can result in significant negative outcomes for both clients and the professional. The existence of ideological discrepancies between the knowledge class and middle and working classes is supported throughout the literature in such as areas as political party affiliation, priorities identified for the national domestic agenda, religious affiliation, and issues of a moral and sexual nature. A comparison of the perspectives of social work students, and members of the middle and working classes on such issues as adequacy of spending for welfare, abortion rights, and improving conditions for marginalized groups revealed large gaps between social work students and the middle and working classes.
