Energy Resources Australia, a subsidiary of the Australia company North Ltd has been mining uranium at Ranger mine in Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory since the 1970s. When ERA proposed opening a second uranium mine at Jabiluka, near Ranger, the Jabiluka Action Group (JAG) was formed to oppose this move. JAG joined forces with Mirrar Aboriginal people living in Kakadu, represented by the Gundjehmi Aboriginal Corporation. A combination of legal actions, shareholder protests, direct action and appeals to international bodies have so far prevented significant development of the mine site at Jabiluka. This synergy has been possible because the wishes of the indigenous Mirrar people have been fully taken into account by JAG. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
