The article considers international mediation and peacebuilding in the creation of peace agreements between regional powers. Agreements created between France and Germany following World War II, between Egypt and Israel in 1978-1979 and between Israel and Jordan in 1994 are examined. A pattern is found in which all three agreements were largely the result of international intervention and reasons of state interests, while public opinion in those countries remained antagonistic to the agreements. It is stated that one difference between the three agreements is that France and Germany's societies became part of the peacebuilding process through means such as economic integration, while the Arab-Israeli agreements are still opposed, meaning they are endangered by possible political changes.
