Japan's security policy is changing rapidly, with drastic increases to its defense budget and the acquisition of counterstrike capabilities. While the deteriorating security environment undeniably motivates Japan's defense posture, the speed and extent of these recent changes still present a puzzle. Why was it under Kishida Fumio--a former leader of Kōchikai, the liberal and oft-considered pacifist faction within the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)--that Japan achieved its watershed moment on defense? This article explains this change through the exigencies of Kishida's domestic political survival. It was through his leadership of a minority faction within the LDP, his image as a dove, and support for fiscal discipline, that Kishida managed to find the largest common denominator among competing domestic political forces. Had it not been for Kishida, the speed and degree of Japan's recent transformation in security policies would have been unlikely. Nordic life vlogs are a popular genre among avid watchers of YouTube influencers across East Asia. The vlogs showcase "a slice of life" content, documenting the simple living, daily routines, beautiful landscapes, cultural festivals, and everyday norms of what it is like to live in the Nordic region. While there are many Nordic life vloggers, in this article, we focus on a subset: young immigrant women from Japan and South Korea living in the Nordics. By attending to the genre, content, and interactions between vloggers and viewers, we explore how female East Asian YouTube vloggers who have immigrated to Nordic countries construct fantasised and fantastical narratives around Nordic imaginaries. The discussion of multifaceted layers of Nordic imaginaries explains how Nordic life vlogs serve as a platform for young East Asian women to project their desire for a better life and cultivate subtle resilience at the juncture of postfeminism and postcolonialism. Societal Impact Statement Summary The discovery of a new genus within the family Thismiaceae, known as fairy lanterns, marks a significant scientific milestone in Japan, a country renowned for its botanical research. The unearthing of a new genus, especially in a well‐documented flora like Japan, is both rare and monumental. Unlike other fairy lanterns that bloom under leaf litter and can be easily overlooked, the new genus and species, Relictithismia kimotsukiensis, often does not even emerge above the surface of the soil when flowering. This captivating characteristic not only enriches our knowledge of botanical diversity but also emphasizes the importance of preserving natural habitats that harbor such rare species.The family Thismiaceae, known as “fairy lanterns”, is distinguished by its urn‐ or bell‐shaped, glasswork‐like flowers with basally fused tepals and its dependence on specific fungi for carbon. A new genus and species, Relictithismia kimotsukiensis, has been discovered in southern Japan. This species is notable for its unique anther‐stigma contact, hitherto unreported in the other Thismiaceae. Unlike typical fairy lanterns that bloom just above the leaf litter, Relictithismia often flowers beneath it. The underground habit is potentially associated with self‐pollination. The discovery of Relictithismia enhances our understanding of evolutionary pathways within the Thismiaceae, as it possesses characteristics previously thought to be unique to Thismia (the annulus with drooping stamens) as well as traits found in other genera (free stamens without expanded connectives). AbstractThis article discusses the history of efforts to shape passenger experience aboard urban railways through transport design. Taking Japan National Railways (JNR) trains as a case study, it examines the development of design interventions and organisational polices seeking to increase passenger comfort on Tokyo’s urban railway network in the second half of the 20th century. Industry and popular accounts have often tied the improvement of transport quality and passenger experience aboard JNR trains to its privatisation in 1987. In contrast, this article shows that passenger-oriented transport design has been an integral component in a continuous project to make urban railway travel more pleasant that long preceded this 1987 change in governance structures but has been held back by organisational and structural challenges. In doing so, it highlights that transport design involves the conscious shaping of both the “hardware” (i.e. physical transport infrastructure) and “software” (i.e. passenger-staff interactions) of service, as well as the backstage modification of organisational structures and processes that facilitate this framework. Built on a qualitative analysis of Japanese industry publications, newspapers, and secondary sources, the article thus contributes to literature on passenger experience, mobilities design, and transport history. Background/Aim: Clear cell carcinoma is a prevalent histological type of ovarian cancer in East Asia, particularly in Japan, known for its resistance to chemotherapeutic agents and poor prognosis. ARID1A gene mutations, commonly found in ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC), contribute to its pathogenesis. Recent data revealed that the ARID1A mutation is related to better outcomes of cancer immunotherapy. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the immunotherapy treatment susceptibility of OCCC bearing ARID1A mutations. Materials and Methods: Expression of ARID1A was analyzed using western blotting in ovarian cancer cell lines. OCCC cell lines JHOC-9 and RMG-V were engineered to overexpress NY-ESO-1, HLAA* 02:01, and ARID1A. Sensitivity to chemotherapy and T cell receptor-transduced T (TCR-T) cells specific for NYESO- 1 was assessed in ARID1A-restored cells compared to ARID1A-deficient wild-type cells. Results: JHOC-9 cells and RMG-V cells showed no expression of ARID1A protein. Overexpression of ARID1A in JHOC-9 and RMG-V cells did not impact sensitivity to gemcitabine. While ARID1A overexpression decreased sensitivity to cisplatin in RMG-V cells, it had no such effect in JHOC-9 cells. ARID1A overexpression reduced the reactivity of NY-ESO-1-specific TCR-T cells, as observed by the IFNγ ESLIPOT assay. "Felt understanding" is a crucial determinant of positive interpersonal and intergroup relationships. However, the question of why felt understanding shapes intergroup relations has been neglected. In a pre-registered test of the process in intergroup relations with a sample from East Asia, we manipulated felt understanding (understood versus misunderstood by an outgroup) in an experimental study (N = 476). The results supported the expectation that felt understanding would lead to a more positive intergroup orientation and action intention. The results of parallel mediation analyses showed that felt understanding indirectly predicted intergroup outcomes through felt positive regard, intergroup overlap, and outgroup stereotypes. Furthermore, the results of post-hoc sequential mediation analyses indicated that felt understanding indirectly predicted intergroup outcomes sequentially through felt positive regard and intergroup overlap, followed by outgroup stereotypes. Japan's construction of fortifications throughout its history has been a subject of scholarly interest. Japan has been building fortifications for generations, from Muzuki and stone fortifications at home to Japanese fortifications on the Korean peninsula. While it is commonly believed that the need for castle building in Japan emerged after the Battle of Baekgang, this paper suggests that Japan's sense of external tensions predates this event. Specifically, this paper examines the construction of defensive fortifications at Itojo and Onojo during the Tang Dynasty and its implications for Japan's relations with East Asia. Through an analysis of historical records and archeological evidence, this paper argues that the construction of Onojo may have begun as early as around AD 650, challenging the prevailing view in academic circles, which holds that Onojo was built after the defeat of Baekgang. By examining the development of Japan's relations with East Asia during this period, this paper sheds light on the geopolitical significance of Japan's construction of defensive fortifications. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a fatal zoonosis caused by ticks in East Asia. As SFTS virus (SFTSV) is maintained between wildlife and ticks, seroepidemiological studies in wildlife are important to understand the behavior of SFTSV in the environment. Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, is an SFTS-endemic area, and approximately 100 feral horses, called Misaki horses (Equus caballus), inhabit Cape Toi in Miyazaki Prefecture. While these animals are managed in a wild-like manner, their ages are ascertainable due to individual identification. In the present study, we conducted a seroepidemiological survey of SFTSV in Misaki horses between 2015 and 2023. This study aimed to understand SFTSV infection in horses and its transmission to wildlife. A total of 707 samples from 180 feral horses were used to determine the seroprevalence of SFTSV using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Neutralization testing was performed on 118 samples. In addition, SFTS viral RNA was detected in ticks from Cape Toi and feral horses. The overall seroprevalence between 2015 and 2023 was 78.5% (555/707). The lowest seroprevalence was 55% (44/80) in 2016 and the highest was 92% (76/83) in 2018. Seroprevalence was significantly affected by age, with 11% (8/71) in those less than one year of age and 96.7% (435/450) in those four years of age and older (p < 0.0001). The concordance between ELISA and neutralization test results was 88.9% (105/118). SFTS viral RNA was not detected in ticks (n = 516) or feral horses. This study demonstrated that horses can be infected with SFTSV and that age is a significant factor in seroprevalence in wildlife. Background (BG) aerosol particles (APs) acting as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and/or ice nucleating particles (INPs) influence short-range precipitation forecasts and climate change projections by modulating cloud and precipitation microphysical structures and influence the effects of cloud seeding on precipitation enhancement. However, data on the CCN and INP capabilities of BG APs are limited in terms of geographical locations and time. To investigate the characteristics of BG APs, we conducted ground-based measurements of BG AP and CCN in Kochi City, Japan, in June 2010. Comparisons with previously published data on AP and CCN concentrations in East Asia showed that the mean concentrations of APs and CCN at the observation site were considerably affected by air pollution. Our findings also suggest that during the observation period, even air masses from the Pacific Ocean were considerably affected by air pollution in East Asia, including Japan. Moreover, aircraft-measured AP and CCN concentrations in the boundary layer were comparable to those measured concurrently at the surface observation site, although the horizontal positions of the ground- and aircraft-based measurements were not identical; the size distributions of the APs were similar. These results suggest that ground-based measurements represent APs and CCN in the boundary layer, where the air is ingested by clouds. Numerical simulations with a detailed bin microphysics parcel model showed that cloud droplet number concentrations, based on meteorological conditions and aerosol characteristics expected near the observation site environments, would range from 500 droplets cm-3 to 1,500 droplets cm-3. These concentrations were consistent with aircraft measurements. These values are higher than the threshold concentration of ~ 500 droplets cm-3 in clouds suitable for hygroscopic seeding, as suggested by previous studies. Plant species with overlapping distributions are expected to experience the same historical events. In contrast, species with different preferred habitat types may exhibit incongruent phylogeographic patterns because of their habitat‐dependent demographic changes in spite of their overlapping distributions. On the western side of the Japanese Archipelago, boreal forest and non‐forest vegetation were dominant during the last glacial period; subsequently, temperate forests expanded, and open vegetation (e.g., grasslands) decreased. Such vegetation shifts can result in incongruent phylogeographic patterns among temperate forest and grassland species; however, few phylogeographic studies have investigated this hypothesis. Here, we evaluated the phylogeographic structure of two related Geranium species that occur in grassland (Geranium krameri) and temperate forest (Geranium shikokianum) habitats using chloroplast genome sequencing and nuclear genome‐wide single‐nucleotide polymorphisms genotyping. The phylogeographic structure was stronger for the temperate forest species than the grassland species, despite its currently scattered distribution for grassland species. The observed patterns indicate that the phylogeographic histories of these species were influenced by their habitat configurations since the last glacial period. During the ice age, grasslands in Japan were much more widespread than today; this would have enabled the grassland species to form a continuous distribution, leading to low divergence among regional populations. In contrast, the significant genetic divergence within the forest species can be attributed to the glacial isolation of regional populations. This article provides a critical review of the results of the Asuka Historical Museum's excavation of the Asukadera wooden pagoda site in Japan since 2015, and its implications for Buddhist cultural exchange in East Asia. The second section examines the Asuka Historical Museum's categorization and scientific analysis of the beads, pearls, horse gear, earrings, gold and silver artifacts, mica, and śarīra containers. We assert that most objects excavated from the Asukadera wooden pagoda site are relics from the Asuka era (538–710), when the pagoda was first established in 593, and only a limited number of artifacts, such as the śarīra [relics] container, were added after the wooden pagoda was burned down in 1196. The third section compares the archeological remains from the Asukadera wooden pagoda site and the reliquary objects from the Paekche Wanghŭng-sa site (577) and Mirŭk-sa site (639), which have been conventionally considered to be its models. What the relics from these three historical sites have in common is that they include clothing accessories nobles wore as they participated in the Buddhist rituals of enshrining the śarīra in a wooden pagoda. However, some differences in the metallic craft items, such as crowns and belts, were still found between Paekche and Japan, which was due to the difference in costume styles in the respective countries at the time. Also, horse gear and lamellar armor unearthed from Asukadera sites was not found in Paekche temple sites, but is similar to earlier Japanese kofun (megalithic tumuli) grave goods, which provides evidence that as Buddhism was transferred to Japan from Paekche, it was not accepted in completely the same form. This paper analyzes the shift in career strategies among Japanese women due to the globalization of Japan's economy since the 1980s. It highlights how economic changes led to a gender‐based division of labor, propelling women to seek opportunities abroad. The research draws on interviews with 81 women who moved to financial centers in East Asia, mainly in Hong Kong and Shanghai, examining their experiences in the workforce, the impact of human resource agencies in their migration, and the challenges and opportunities they encountered. The study reveals a complex landscape where Japanese women navigate gendered expectations and discrimination both in Japan and abroad in pursuit of career advancement. The conclusion emphasizes three points. First, women found opportunities abroad to do what they wanted, even if it was not what they initially expected before leaving Japan. Second, although supportive and subordinate to male managers, their work was indispensable to the management of Japanese companies abroad. Their contribution has long been underestimated but needs to be considered. Third, the experience abroad gave them direct interaction with various clients and colleagues and a view of rapid societal change in Hong Kong and China, contributing to choosing their diverse career trajectories and life plans. Anime-style films have been produced within East Asia for many years by relying on a cross-border production network dominated by studios in Japan. In this production model, Japanese studios provide source material and creative development, while manual work is outsourced to animators in neighbouring countries. With China's growing influence within the region's creative economy, however, more transnationally co-produced animations are based on Chinese source material, offering a promise of enhanced cultural exchange while challenging received frameworks of knowledge and production in the region's animation industry. This article examines how Japanese animation studios construct China as a nostalgic place by analyzing the use of nostalgia-driven narrative conventions in Flavours of Youth, a 2018 Sino-Japanese co-produced animation. The screen imaginaries yielded by such co-operative productions are contained within a familiar convention couched in an artistic language influenced by Japan's centrality in the anime production network. This results in a visual rhetoric that transforms the uneven landscape of China's transitions into a homogenous animation product. By outlining the theoretical terms of nostalgic representation expressed as sentiment: nostalgia as mood, and style: nostalgia as mode, we examine the way Flavours of Youth frames the interplay of the two nostalgic methods as a metacommentary on China's modernization process vis-à-vis Japan. The creative process involved in reconfiguring China's developmental transitions through anime conventions of 'nostalgia machines' creates a friction between the parasitic nostalgic form and the cultural host it attaches itself to, collapsing the film's potential for reflection on the contemporary realities of a shared Asian experience. We argue that the transnationally constructed, disembedded – and therefore artificial – nostalgia found in the film is a symptom of Japan's continuing ambivalence towards China manifested in the anime industry's overreliance on codified styles over shared engagement with the alternative cultural contexts of its Asian neighbours. A historical atmospheric reanalysis from 1850 to 2015 was performed using an atmospheric general circulation model assimilating surface pressure observations archived in international databases, with perturbed observational sea surface temperatures as a lower boundary condition. Posterior spread during data assimilation provides quantitative information on the uncertainty in the historical reanalysis. The reanalysis reproduces the evolution of the three-dimensional atmosphere close to those of the operational centers. Newly archived surface pressure observations greatly reduced the uncertainties in the present reanalysis over East Asia in the early 20th century. A scheme for assimilating tropical cyclone tracks and intensities was developed. The scheme was superior to the present several reanalyses in reproducing the intensity close to the observations and the positions. The reanalysis provides possible images of atmospheric circulations before reanalyses with full-scale observations become available, and opportunities for investigating extreme events that occurred before World War II. Incorporating dynamical downscaling with a regional model that includes detailed topography and sophisticated physics is an application of historical reanalysis to reveal the details of past extreme events. Some examples of past heavy rainfall events in Japan are shown using a downscaling experiment, together with dense rainfall observations over the Japanese islands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH), a prominent feature in the North Pacific during the boreal summer, exerts significant socioeconomic consequences by influencing hydrological extremes such as tropical cyclones, the Meiyu front, and summer heat waves over East Asia. Accurately forecasting the characteristics of the WNPSH over extended timescales is crucial, but subseasonal prediction in this specific context is still in its early stages due to the complex dynamics involved. In this study, we investigate the optimal predictable pattern of the WNPSH using linear stochastic dynamics. Our findings reveal that convection over the Philippine/South China Sea and Japan serves as key precursors, where a dipole vorticity pattern leads to maximum growth of the WNPSH on subseasonal timescales, providing a potential source of predictability. Additionally, we examine the role of optimal predictable patterns in the record-breaking 2020 WNPSH event, and we find that the cumulative effect of stochastic forcing helps explain the sustained features of this extreme case. Background: Although Japan is a major endemic area for human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) and the virus has been well-studied in this region, there is limited research on HTLV-1 in surrounding regions. In this study, we determined the complete genome sequences of HTLV-1 strains isolated from Taiwan and Japan and investigated the geographic characteristics of molecular subgroups and substitution mutations to understand the spread of HTLV-1 and its correlation with human migration. Methodology/Principal findings: The complete genome sequences of 26 HTLV-1 isolates from Taiwan were determined using next-generation sequencing and were compared with those of 211 isolates from Japan in terms of subgroup and genetic mutations. In total, 15/26 (58%) isolates from Taiwan belonged to the transcontinental subgroup and 11/26 (42%) isolates belonged to the Japanese subgroup. The transcontinental subgroup was significantly more prevalent among Taiwanese isolates than Japanese isolates (58% vs 18%, P < 0.0001). The mutation rate for the complete HTLV-1 sequence was as low as 0.2%. On examining individual base substitutions, the G-to-A mutation was predominant. Bayesian phylogenetic tree analysis estimated the time to the most recent common ancestor for the transcontinental and Japanese subgroups to be 28447 years. The transcontinental subgroups from Taiwan and Japan appeared to form clusters according to their respective regions. Conclusions/Significance: The transcontinental subgroup of HTLV-1 is predominant in Taiwan, while the Japanese subgroup is common in Japan. The difference in subgroup distribution may be attributed to the initial spread of the transcontinental subgroup in East Asia, followed by the influx of the Japanese subgroup. Author summary: Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus that infects 5–10 million people worldwide. HTLV-1 infection can cause serious diseases including hematologic malignancy, adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), and progressive neurologic disease known as HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraplegia (HAM/TSP). An increase in the mortality rate among HTLV-1-infected individuals has become an issue of concern in recent years. Differences in HTLV-1 infection rates and subgroup distribution are considered to be caused by the historical global movement of HTLV-1-infected individuals. Furthermore, recent global population movements have resulted in the redistribution of HTLV-1-infected individuals, which may lead to outbreaks of ATL and HAM/TSP in non-endemic areas. In this study, we investigated the molecular characteristics of HTLV-1 in East Asia and found that the transcontinental subgroup was more prevalent in Taiwan, whereas the Japanese subgroup was common in Japan. Background Tick-borne infections, including tsutsugamushi disease, Japanese spotted fever, and severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), are prevalent in East Asia with varying geographic distribution and seasonality. This study aimed to investigate the differences in the characteristics among endemic areas for contracting each infection. Methods We conducted an ecologic study in Japan, using data from a nationwide inpatient database and publicly available geospatial data. We identified 4493 patients who were hospitalized for tick-borne infections between July 2010 and March 2021. Mixed-effects modified Poisson regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with a higher risk of contracting each tick-borne disease (Tsutsugamushi, Japanese spotted fever, and SFTS). Results Mixed-effects modified Poisson regression analysis revealed that environmental factors, such as temperature, sunlight duration, elevation, precipitation, and vegetation, were associated with the risk of contracting these diseases. Tsutsugamushi disease was positively associated with higher temperatures, farms, and forests, whereas Japanese spotted fever and SFTS were positively associated with higher solar radiation and forests. Conclusions Our findings from this ecologic study indicate that different environmental factors play a significant role in the risk of transmission of tick-borne infections. Understanding the differences can aid in identifying high-risk areas and developing public health strategies for infection prevention. Further research is needed to address causal relationships. Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is considered a paramount microbe, especially in East Asia, including Japan. The commonly used commercial Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) assay using Middlebrook 7H9 (7H9) medium deviates from the latest Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. Alternatively, measurement with cation-adjusted Mueller-Hinton broth (CAMHB) that conforms to CLSI standards is not yet widely available. Following the approval and commercialization of amikacin liposome inhalation suspension (ALIS) in 2021, a more precise evaluation of amikacin (AMK) susceptibility in MAC is necessary for treatment decisions. In the present study, 33 sputum samples were extracted from 27 patients, and MICs of AMK were compared between the frequently used 7H9 and the recommended CAMHB of the isolated MAC strains. The history of exposure to aminoglycosides for each sample was also added as clinical information. The findings indicated that there was only an 18% concordance rate in MIC between the two media, with 19 samples (58%) indicating lower MICs in 7H9 relative to CAMHB. The 17 samples had a history of exposure to aminoglycosides for periods ranging from 1.5 to 28 months. Specifically, 10 samples were exposed to amikacin by inhalation and intravenous injection, and the remaining seven samples had a history of ALIS inhalation. Samples with a prior utilization of aminoglycosides were significantly predisposed to developing resistance to ALIS compared to those without such a history (P = 0.046). Physicians are encouraged to scrutinize the findings of susceptibility testing utilizing CLSI-endorsed MIC assay using CAMHB medium to ascertain the optimal therapeutic approach. Genetic structure and distribution patterns of modern floras are strongly affected by climatic change and geographical isolation. In the present study, we applied restriction site associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq) to analyze the genetic structure and to simulate the demographic history of two extant Cryptomeria species in Japan (C. japonica) and Southeastern China (C. japonica var. sinensis). Thirteen natural populations representing the entire species distributed in East Asia were collected from Japan and China. At the species level, the genetic diversity of Cryptomeria was moderate (Ho = 0.217, He = 0.203) with a significant genetic differentiation among populations (85.30%, P < 0.001), especially between Japan and China lineages (FST = 0.147). Except for the Lushan (LS) population in China, all populations were clustered into two lineages (Japanese and Chinese), which was consistent with their geographical distribution. Approximate Bayesian computations (ABC) model indicated that the current two geographical lineages diverged from a common ancestral lineage, and that their divergence time was about 0.417 ~ 0.139 million years ago (Mya). Geographical isolation, climate change in the Quaternary, and human disturbance played important roles in genetic variation and distribution patterns of Cryptomeria in East Asia. In recent decades, rise of sea surface temperature (SST) in the Kuroshio region of the East China Sea (ECS), which is associated with global warming, has attracted considerable attention. Despite its relevance to air‐sea interaction phenomena, the atmospheric consequences of this SST increase remain largely unexplored. Using the ERA5 reanalysis data set in conjunction with a moisture budget analysis, we found that during 1979–2022, warming in the ECS‐Kuroshio has contributed to the intensification of the East Asian Meiyu‐Baiu rainband in June. This intensification is attributed to augmented wind convergence in the low‐level free troposphere (950–700 hPa). Importantly, the atmospheric responses to ECS‐Kuroshio warming penetrated the deep troposphere (to approximately 300 hPa), suggesting an enhancement of deep convection. Furthermore, ECS‐Kuroshio warming likely strengthened the overlying atmospheric low pressure, resulting in wind convergence enhancement. The findings clarified the important role of the ECS‐Kuroshio in driving East Asian climate change amid global warming. Plain Language Summary: In response to global warming, East Asian summer precipitation is increasing along with an increase in extreme precipitation events, which poses a significant threat to agriculture and economic development. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the increased precipitation trend in East Asia is crucial for sustainable human development in this region. The findings of this study revealed that East Asian precipitation induced by the Meiyu‐Baiu rainband has intensified continuously during the past four decades, particularly in the marine areas around the East China Sea (ECS) and the south of Japan. We further established that the continuous increase in sea surface temperature over the Kuroshio in the ECS, which was related to global warming, strengthened the atmospheric low‐pressure system overlying the current, contributing to an increase in rainfall around the ECS. The findings of this study highlighted the important role of the Kuroshio Current in influencing climate change in East Asia. The large-scale loach Paramisgurnus dabryanus is a freshwater fish native to East Asia except for Japan. However, its presence has been observed in various locations of Japan, and sympatric occurrences with the dojo loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, a related species native to Japan, have also been reported. Artificially induced inter-specific hybrids between the two species were reported viable, and their fertility was suggested at least in females. To avoid genetic introgression in native Japanese dojo loaches, a method for precise identification of the two loach species is necessary. Species identification based on morphology has sometimes led to misidentification in the Japanese population, and inter-specific hybrids were difficult to identify due to their morphological similarities. We therefore developed a nuclear DNA marker named PdaDra from repetitive sequences isolated by genomic DNA digestion with the restriction enzyme DraI. This marker could discriminate large-scale loaches from dojo loaches, showing predominant smear-like electrophoretic patterns with ladder-like bands in the large-scale loach and no amplification in most dojo loaches. The combined use of other DNA markers previously developed for the dojo loach also makes it possible to successfully identify inter-specific hybrids. This study aimed to examine the prevalence and factors influencing domestic abuse victimization among high-income women in Japan, including physical, psychological, economic, and sexual abuse. The background factors and reality of domestic abuse faced by high-income women have not been sufficiently addressed, although some academic studies contend that economically disadvantaged women are more susceptible to domestic abuse. This study collected data from 359 high-income women in Japan using an online questionnaire survey. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the contributing factors. Approximately one-fifth of high-income women had suffered physical, economic, and sexual domestic abuse, and approximately two-fifths had experienced psychological violence. Adverse childhood experiences, the degree of approval of traditional gender norms, quarrels over opposing views on traditional gender norms, and partners' education levels considerably influenced the prevalence of domestic abuse among high-income female victims. In contrast with the literature, the earnings gap between female victims and their partners did not yield meaningful results. This study examines the experiences of four types of domestic abuse among high-income women in East Asia and highlights the factors that contribute to it, as exemplified by Japan, which is a research direction that has not received sufficient attention. This article examines how newspaper coverage of inequality differs in Japan and South Korea, countries with comparable levels and nature of income inequality, but whose citizens maintain different attitudes toward it. Analyzing 18,630 articles in six major newspapers from 1990 to 2021, our analysis found (1) Japanese and South Korean newspapers report surprisingly little about inequality even in a period of growing inequality; (2) while South Korean newspapers significantly increased their coverage of within-country inequality in the 2010s, such a trend is not found in Japan; (3) progressive newspapers largely drive the increase in the coverage of inequality in South Korea. We also look closely into the four major topics within inequality coverage – income, employment, generation, and gender – to elaborate on qualitative differences in the ways inequality is discussed in newspapers in both societies. Our findings suggest that there exist nationally specific patterns of inequality coverage and offer important implications for the ongoing discussion about economic inequality in East Asia, as well as the literature on subjective inequality. This article examines a transnational network of advocates for Kampō (traditional) medicine in Japan, occupied China, and Manchukuo during the Sino-Japanese War (1931–1945), shedding new light on collaborationism, Asianism, and the modernization of traditional medicine in East Asia. In the 1930s, despite deteriorating Sino-Japanese relations, the Kampō revival movement in Japan joined forces with the struggle to preserve traditional medicine in China. In 1938, the Association of East Asian Medicine was founded in Japan, gathering together Chinese, Korean, and Japanese advocates under the banner of 'East Asian medicine'. This article delineates the evolution of what I call 'medical Asianism' and how it was institutionalized in different parts of the Japanese empire. Participants in this network differed in their priorities and ideological commitments, yet they tactfully utilized the Japanese imperial infrastructure and wartime circumstances to promote traditional medicine. Their work laid important intellectual and institutional foundations for the postwar development of traditional medicine across East Asia. This study also contributes to a more nuanced understandings of collaborationism. The type of collaboration examined in this article was preceded by a long history of intellectual exchange, based on a shared body of knowledge and morals, motivated by mutual empathy, and for a cause that was much valued in postwar Asia. As a result, unlike most Chinese collaborators who were prosecuted as 'traitors', protagonists in this study continued to prosper professionally and became valuable assets in the postwar rebuilding of Sino-Japanese relations. This study examines the Japanese-American alliance and its implications for multilateral cooperation in East Asia through neorealist and neoliberalist perspectives. For neorealists, the US-Japan alliance serves as a mechanism for maintaining regional stability by deterring potential aggressors, particularly in the face of growing Chinese influence and the North Korean threat. It is a manifestation of power politics, as it strengthens the security capabilities of both nations, indirectly influencing the balance of power in East Asia. However, neorealism highlights the potential for alliance dynamics to create security dilemmas, potentially exacerbating tensions in the region. Neoliberals in return underscores the alliance’s capacity to promote multilateral cooperation in East Asia. In addition to provide a stable security environment, it serves as a foundation upon which broader regional security setup and cooperative initiatives can be built, fostering trust and collaboration among regional states. Based on Realism theory, this paper provides an explanation of the importance of power in International Relations, by analyzing the behavior of China and Japan in the East Asian region, and also the behavior of the United States of America towards them as the dominant superpower under the current international system. It answers the problem of the transfer of power from the West to the East, and in return supports the assumption that the Great Powers seek to possess relative power as much as possible. The paper also emphasizes that the State should not undermine or renounce its offensive power, as with Japan, because that will put it in front of a dilemma of the growing the power of neighboring States that seek to achieve regional hegemony, such as China. For over 40 years, Kansei-based research and development have been conducted in Japan and other East Asian countries and these decades of research have influenced Kansei interpretation. New methods and applications, including virtual reality and artificial intelligence, have emerged since the millennium, as the Kansei concept has spread throughout Europe and the rest of the world. This paper reviews past literature and industrial experience, offering a comprehensive understanding of Kansei, the underlying philosophy, and the methodology of Kansei Engineering from the approach of psychology and physiology, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The breadth of Kansei is described by examples, emerging from both industry and academia. Additionally, thematic mapping of the state-of-the-art as well as an outlook are derived from feedback obtained from structured interview of thirty-five of the most distinguished researchers in Kansei. The mapping provides insights into current trends and future directions. Kansei is unique because it includes the consideration of emotion in the design of products and services. The paper aims at becoming a reference for researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders across borders and cultures, looking for holistic perspectives on Kansei, Kansei Engineering, and implementation methods. In much of Western legal historical scholarship, legal fictions are understood to be devices for maintaining the integrity of text-based legal codes in the face of social change. However, while legal fictions as such were not a topic of scholarly inquiry in East Asia prior to the introduction of the concept from the West, East Asia is nevertheless rich in examples of another kind of legal fiction: jurisprudential legal fictions, or legal fictions effected by judges and rooted in culture (often including religion). The mythical, moral xiezhi beast in ancient China, and judge-centered moral reasoning in pre-modern Japan, point to legal fictions beyond the traditional categories of such in much of Western scholarship, as well as to legal fictions within the West now largely forgotten after the advent of Enlightenment thinking on textual law. Introduction: Sea slater, in the genus Ligia, is widespread in rocky shore habitats, and the taxon is easily isolated due to its limited dispersal capacity. Therefore, most Ligia species exhibit an allopatric distribution, but Ligia exotica and L. cinerascens exhibit an overlapping distribution distribution in East Asia. Previous studies on both species have confirmed the existence of highly divergent lineages based on 16S rRNA. Methods: In the present study, 282 Ligia individuals were collected at ten, three, and three sites in South Korea, Japan, and Vietnam, respectively, and 41 haplotypes were observed based on 16S rRNA. Results and discussion: The results of phylogeny, phylogenetic network, and TCS network, Principal Coordinates Analysis, and four Molecular Species Delimitation Analyses revealed that six genetic lineages including L. cinerascens, LineagesNand S of L. exotica, Ligia sp. 1, sp.2 and sp.3 were present. The three genetic lineages, including L. cinerascens, Lineage N of L. exotica, and Lineage S of L. exotica, were also identified in the phylogeny based on a nuclear gene of the sodium-potassium ATPase α-subunit (Nak). Phylogeographic analysis revealed that L. cinerascens and Lineage N of L. exotica were distributed overlappingly in South Korea, Japan, and the northern region of China. Generally, the two lineages of L. exotica were distributed allopatrically, which was more evident along the coastline of mainland China than that of Japan. The results of time-calibrated phylogeny suggested that the speciation events of Ligia species might be associated with Japanese mainland formation from Oligocene to Miocene (approximately 30-5 million years ago, Mya). The results of the present study provide insights that could facilitate the understanding of the evolutionary history of Ligia, tracking of geological processes, and evolutionary effects of palaeogeographical events at the population level. Although most members of the freshwater leech family Glossiphoniidae have mid-body somites divided into three annuli, the genus Torix Blanchard, 1893 is distinguished by two-annuli somites. Torix has high species richness in Far East Asia, and three nominal species have been recognised in the Japanese Archipelago and adjacent regions that can be distinguished by a combination of both internal and external morphological characteristics. However, recent studies have shown that these diagnostic features are ontogenetically variable and this has resulted in taxonomic confusion among Torix species endemic to the Japanese Archipelago. In this study, we revisit the taxonomic accounts of T. orientalis (Oka, 1925) and T. tagoi (Oka, 1925), in addition to that of the recently redescribed T. tukubana (Oka, 1935) to clarify the diagnostic characteristics for each of the three species. Our morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that the three Torix species in Japan are indistinguishable. We therefore conclude that these species should be synonymised and treated as a single species. The specific names orientalis and tagoi were simultaneously established under the genus Oligobdella Moore, 1918, therefore we acted as First Reviser and gave precedence to the name O. tagoi, thus the valid name for the Far East Asian Torix species is T. tagoi unless T. orientalis and T. tagoi are treated as distinct species. There are several type localities for T. tagoi and the name-bearing types have been lost, therefore we designate a neotype for this species to obviate zoological and nomenclatural issues. The pathophysiology of myasthenia gravis (MG) has been largely elucidated over the past half century, and treatment methods have advanced. However, the number of cases of childhood-onset MG is smaller than that of adult MG, and the treatment of childhood-onset MG has continued to be based on research in the adult field. Research on pathophysiology and treatment methods that account for the unique growth and development of children is now desired. According to an epidemiological survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan, the number of patients with MG by age of onset in Japan is high in early childhood. In recent years, MG has been reported from many countries around the world, but the pattern of the number of patients by age of onset differs between East Asia and Western Europe, confirming that the Japanese pattern is common in East Asia. Furthermore, there are racial differences in autoimmune MG and congenital myasthenic syndromes according to immunogenetic background, and their pathophysiology and relationships are gradually becoming clear. In addition, treatment options are also recognized in different regions of the world. In this review article, I will present recent findings focusing on the differences in pathophysiology. The Shirakami Mountain range, including the largest primeval beech forest in East-Asia, is undergoing ecological change. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in nutrient and material cycling in forest ecosystems. Because the quality of DOM varies based on its origin and diagenetic and runoff processes, changes in the environment surrounding DOM can be rapidly detected by monitoring its quality. Herein, concentrations and fluorescence composition of DOM at 14 sites in 13 streams in the Shirakami Mountain range were monitored monthly for over 2 years, excluding winter (December–March), to gain insight into the catchment hydrological and soil characteristics affecting DOM concentrations and composition in stream water. Based on the pattern of temporal changes in fluorescent component composition, monitoring sites were categorized into four groups (streams with small catchments, large catchments, catchments facing the Sea of Japan, and open waters in the catchment) with similar catchment characteristics affecting DOM dynamics. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that DOM concentrations in each group could be attributed to rainfall on the survey date, short-term (1–2 days) rainfall, midterm (~1 month) accumulated rainfall, midterm (7–11 days) accumulated temperature, and catchment characteristics as explanatory variables. The degree of influence of these variables differed among the four groups. The results of this study show that grouping streams according to catchment hydrological characteristics can help identify the impact of climate and environmental change on DOM dynamics in stream water. Many molecular targeted agents, including biologics, have emerged for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), but their high prices have prevented their widespread use. This study aimed to reveal the changes in patient characteristics and the therapeutic strategies of IBD before and after the implementation of biologics in Japan, where the unique health insurance system allows patients with IBD and physicians to select drugs with minimum patient expenses. The analysis was performed using a prospective cohort, including IBD expert and nonexpert hospitals in Japan. In this study, patients were classified into two groups according to the year of diagnosis based on infliximab implementation as the prebiologic and biologic era groups. The characteristics of therapeutic strategies in both groups were evaluated using association analysis. This study analyzed 542 ulcerative colitis (UC) and 186 Crohn's disease (CD). The biologic era included 53.3% of patients with UC and 76.2% with CD, respectively. The age of UC (33.9 years vs. 38.8 years, P < 0.001) or CD diagnosis (24.3 years vs. 31.9 years, P < 0.001) was significantly higher in the biologic era group. The association analysis of patients with multiple drug usage histories revealed that patients in the prebiologic era group selected anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α agents, whereas those in the biologic era group preferred biologic agents with different mechanisms other than anti-TNF-α. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that both patient characteristics and treatment preferences in IBD have changed before and after biologic implementation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trace metals in aerosol particles impact Earth's radiative budget, human health, and ocean biogeochemistry. Semi-continuous measurements of the elemental composition of fine-mode (PM 2.5) aerosols were conducted using an automated X-ray fluorescence analyzer on a remote island of Japan during the spring of 2018. Temporal variations in mass concentrations of geochemically important elements for this period, such as Pb, Cu, Si, Fe, and Mn, and their relationships with the emission tracers, carbon monoxide (CO) and black carbon (BC), were reported. The Integrated Massively Parallel Atmospheric Chemical Transport (IMPACT) model was used to evaluate the source apportionment of these components and was evaluated in terms of emissions and wet removal processes. Pb and Cu originated mainly from anthropogenic sources (98 % and 93 % on average, respectively) over the East Asian continent. Positive correlations of Pb and Cu with BC and CO and the similarity of their concentration-weighted trajectories indicated that the emission sources of these metals share the region where the large CO (and BC) emission sources are located and that CO can be regarded as a tracer of continental anthropogenic emissions. The air masses with minimized impacts of the wet removal during transport were extracted to elucidate the "top-down" emission ratio of Pb and Cu to CO, which were, for the first time, evaluated as 152.7 and 63.1 µg g -1 , respectively, during the spring of 2018 in the East Asian outflow. The analysis of the tagged tracer simulations by the IMPACT model confirmed that BC and Si could be used as tracers for anthropogenic and dust emissions, respectively, during the observation period. The source apportionment of Fe and Mn in PM 2.5 aerosols was conducted using Si and BC tracers, which revealed that the anthropogenic contribution was 17 % and 44 % on average, respectively. Based on the air mass origins of Fe and Mn, their anthropogenic fraction varied from 2 % to 29 % and 9 % to 68 %, respectively, during the high-PM 2.5 -concentration periods. However, despite the non-dominant anthropogenic contributions of Fe, they could adversely affect human health and ocean biogeochemistry, owing to their higher water solubility. The modeled BC, Pb, Cu, and Fe were evaluated by separately diagnosing their emission and transport. Ratios of modeled to observed concentrations for these components were analyzed in terms of the accumulated precipitation along the transport from the East Asian continent. The current model simulations were found to overestimate the emissions (based on the Community Emissions Data System, CEDS v2021-02-05) of BC by 44 % and underestimate Cu by 45 %, anthropogenic Fe by 28 % in East Asia, and the wet deposition rates for BC and Pb. Over a century ago, low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy was introduced to treat prostate cancer (PCa). Since then, it has been widely applied worldwide, including in East Asia. LDR brachytherapy has been performed in 88 institutes in Japan. Beneficial clinical outcomes of LDR brachytherapy for intermediate-to-high-risk PCa have been demonstrated in large clinical trials. These clinical outcomes were achieved through advances in methods, such as urological precise needle puncture and seed placement, and the quantitative decision making regarding radiological parameters by radiation oncologists. The combined use of LDR brachytherapy with other therapeutic modalities, such as external beam radiation and androgen deprivation therapy, for the clinical risk classification of PCa has led to better anticancer treatment efficacy. In this study, we summarized basic LDR brachytherapy findings that should remain unchanged and be passed down in urology departments. We also discussed the applications of LDR brachytherapy for PCa in various clinical settings, including focal and salvage therapies. Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a disease that causes muscle weakness and fatigue due to an abnormality in the neuromuscular junction, which prevents the transmission of information. In the 1970s, it became clear that MG was caused by an autoimmune mechanism, and treatments began to be developed. Most studies on the pathophysiology and treatment of MG have been conducted in adults. However, even in terms of acetylcholine receptor antibodies, which are related to MG pathophysiology, adults and children differ significantly. Moreover, epidemiological studies around the world have revealed significant differences in the prevalence of MG between East Asia, Europe, and the United States. Treatment methods also differ slightly across countries, depending on the differences in pathophysiology and medical practices that have been developed in each region of the world. Japanese pediatric neurologists have revealed a pathophysiology unique to children and differences in treatment methods for childhood MG. However, few studies have systematically reported these findings. Therefore, this article reviews the current basic concepts related to the pathophysiology and treatment of childhood MG in Japan. Vanda falcata is an epiphytic orchid native to East Asia with high horticultural and ornamental value. However, its wild populations are at risk of extinction due to overcollection and habitat loss. Orchids are highly dependent on mycorrhizal fungi for their nutrient acquisition from seed germination to adulthood; therefore, understanding their mycorrhizal associations throughout the life cycle is essential for their conservation. We investigated the mycorrhizal fungi of adult V. falcata plants through the molecular identification of root samples from 40 individual plants from 13 sites, covering a distance of 1200 km across Japan. To identify the fungi that promote V. falcata seed germination, we performed seed germination tests in vitro with fungal isolates from V. falcata and other epiphytic orchids. In adult plants, we detected a total of 11 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) within two fungal families, Ceratobasidiaceae and Tulasnellaceae, and a single Tulasnellaceae OTU (TU11) was found in samples from 12 sites. However, Vanda falcata seed germination and early development were induced in vitro by Ceratobasidiaceae fungi rather than Tulasnellaceae fungi, including TU11. These results suggest that different mycorrhizal fungi may be predominantly associated with V. falcata in the adult and seed germination stages. This mycorrhizal switching suggests that effective mycorrhizal fungi for conservation may differ between the adult and juvenile stages, even within a single orchid species. Although the percentage of multi-regional clinical trials (MRCTs) submitted for drug approval in Japan increased significantly since the 2007 publication of the regulatory guideline, "Basic principles on global clinical trials", strategic collaborations between Asian countries will be important to promote MRCTs in accordance with the ICH E17 guideline published in 2017. In this study, characteristics of MRCTs reviewed for drug approval in Japan, especially those with participation by South-East Asia and East Asia, were investigated to explore opportunities for collaborations on global drug development in Asia. More than 90% of reviewed trials were conducted as global MRCTs. In addition to Japan, South-East Asia has participated in various types of MRCTs in terms of total numbers of subjects and countries. However, South-East Asia participation was lower in large-size MRCTs (total sample size ≥ 1000) than in middle- (500 ≤ total sample size < 1000) and small-size MRCTs (total sample size < 500). Furthermore, similar clinical trials for the same indications to the MRCTs without South-East Asia were rarely conducted separately in South-East Asia. Participation of other Asian countries did not affect the percentage of Japanese subjects enrolled in an MRCT, but did significantly increase the percentage of participating Asian subjects. These results suggest that additional opportunities for collaboration on MRCTs may be possible between Japan and other Asian countries, especially more collaborations with South-East Asia in the large-size MRCTs. More data of Asian populations from MRCTs will be useful for exploring an important ethnic factor affecting drug response, and will provide a sound scientific basis in considering the application of the pooled data concept in Asia, as described in the ICH E17 guideline. The Succineidae Beck, 1837 are a family of terrestrial mollusks that are increasingly transported worldwide in horticultural trade. Succineids are extremely difficult to identify morphologically, especially if collected from locations beyond their native range and in the absence of knowledge of their native provenance. In this study, we report an unidentified species of the Succineidae in a flower bed of Petunia sp., Ariake, Tokyo, Japan. A fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene was sequenced, and the shell and genital morphologies were compared with those of other similar species. The summer North American dipole (NAD) is a pattern of climate variability linked to variations in boreal forest seed production and migration of seed-eating birds. This is a modeling investigation of two teleconnections identified as drivers of the NAD in prior observational work: 1) tropically sourced atmospheric Rossby waves associated with anomalies in the phase distribution of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) (i.e., phases 1 and 6 are anomalously prominent), and 2) a pan-Pacific atmospheric Rossby wave linked to East Asian monsoonal (EAM) convection. Sea surface temperature (SST) boundary forcing experiments were conducted with the Community Earth System Model 2 (CESM2) to trigger convection patterns that align with those observed during EAM and nonuniform phase distributions of MJO. For the EAM case, an El Niño–like SST dipole pattern combined with cool southern Japan SST forcing produced a convection and jet stream shift anomaly over East Asia and the northern Pacific with a positive NAD pattern downstream over North America, similar to the observed pattern when precipitation over East Asia (PEA) is relatively high. A companion experiment with only ENSO-like SST forcing also produced the NAD but featured a different structure over the Eurasian continent with a response resembling the summer east Atlantic (SEA) pattern over eastern North America and the eastern Atlantic. Simulation results suggest that the southern Japan SST forcing region has a secondary importance in triggering the NAD, producing only a somewhat NAD-like pattern by itself and only slightly improving the NAD produced by ENSO-like forcing. Simulations using SST forcing to induce seasonal convection anomalies with spatial patterns similar to anomalously frequent occurrence of MJO phase 1 (phase 6) produced circulation response patterns resembling the positive NAD (negative NAD). The predictability and variability of extratropical climate are largely associated with tropical forcing through various teleconnections. The East Asia–Pacific/Pacific-Japan (EAP/PJ) teleconnection is one of the most important factors affecting the summer climate in East Asia. In this work, we confirm the weakening relationship between the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the following summer PJ teleconnection after the late 1990s and diagnose the possible causes. The results show that compared with that of in 1981–1998, ENSO is less conducive to the formation of anomalous anticyclones in the following summer in the Northwest Pacific (NWP) and the northward propagating Rossby wave train from latitudes of NWP in 2000–2017, resulting in a weaker summer PJ teleconnection. Meanwhile, variation of ENSO feature since 2000 with a suppressed variability leads to a weakened response in the tropical Indian Ocean in the spring and summer. The reduced sea surface temperature response in the tropical Indian Ocean suppresses the excitation of eastward-propagating Kelvin waves and declines the capacitor effect of the Indian Ocean, which is unfavorable for generating anomalies in the NWP and motivating strong PJ teleconnection in meridional direction. Thus, the weakening relationship of ENSO-PJ after late 1990s is the result of the weakened ENSO's impact on the formation of anticyclones in the following summer in NWP and the declined Indian Ocean capacitor effect on motivating meridionals wave train over East Asia and NWP region. This article investigates the use of sports mega-events by nations in East Asia to leverage 'soft power'. The focus is on Japan and its 'soft power' strategies, building on existing work by adding a novel tripartite analysis to understand Japan's domestic, regional and international rationale for hosting sports mega-events. The empirical data for this study is drawn from government documents and bespoke in-depth interviews (N = 10) with experts involved in sport. This, alongside engagement with the extant literature in the field, allows a more nuanced understanding of Japan's rationale behind hosting the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the city's second hosting of an Olympics, the 2020(1) summer Games. Key findings include the use of sports mega-events to 'open up' Japan's society and bolster domestic politics, to maintain their regional status competing with China and South Korea and to improve the nation's global status. Zhang Ruoxu's poem "Chunjiang huayue ye," reached Japan and Korea in the anthology Tangshi xuan compiled by the Ming dynasty scholar Li Panlong. In the mid-Edo period, under the influence of the "Kobunjigaku" (Ancient Rhetoric School) represented by Ogyū Sorai, the Tangshi xuan anthology enjoyed a phase of great popularity and became the widest-read Tang poetry work at the time. Because "Chunjiang huayue ye" was included in Tangshi xuan , it was also widely read. Many versions of Tangshi xuan containing abundant commentaries on "Chunjiang huayue ye" were published in Japan; most of these focus on art appreciation and comment on the poem in considerable depth. China, Japan, and Korea also produced many response poems and imitations of "Chunjiang huayue ye." Of these, the Chinese imitations were closest to the original work, the Japanese ones had greater ideological depth and echoed the commentaries on the poem, and the Korean ones were all rhymed response poems that were integrated into Korean culture over time. As a literary classic, "Chunjiang huayue ye" transcended its original era and at the same time broke the barriers of space, becoming world literature appreciated by people in other countries. Apple Valsa canker (AVC) has caused significant losses worldwide, especially in East Asia. Various fungal species from the genus Cytospora/Valsa can infect tree bark and cause tissue rot, and Valsa mali (Vm) is responsible for the most severe tree branch deaths and yield losses. Since AVC was first reported in Japan in 1903, the pathogen species, biological characteristics, infection and pathogenesis, spore dissemination, and disease cycle have been intensively investigated. Based on the new cognition of the disease dynamics, the disease control strategy has shifted from scraping diseased tissue to protecting the bark from infection. In this review, we summarize new knowledge of the Vm infection process mediated by various kinds of virulence factors, including cell wall degrading enzymes, toxins, effectors, microRNA-like RNAs, and pathogenic signaling regulators. We also introduce progress in evaluating germplasm resources and identifying disease response-related genes in apples. In addition, we elaborate current understanding of spore dissemination and disease cycles in orchards and disease prevention techniques. Finally, we provide recommendations for developing more cost-effective strategies for controlling AVC by applying genetic resistance and biological fungicides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The damsel bug genus Alloeorhynchus Fieber, 1860 (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Nabidae, Prostemmatinae, Prostemmatini) comprises at least 50 species worldwide, and seven species have been recorded from East Asia. In Japan, two species, A. (Alloeorhynchus) reinhardi Kerzhner & Günther, 1999 and A. (A.) vinulus Stål, 1864, are currently known. In this study, A. (A.) notatus Distant, 1919 is reported in Japan for the first time. A geographical color variation of A. (A.) vinulus is reported based on specimens collected from Kume Island in the Ryukyu Islands. Alisma L. is a genus of aquatic and wetland plants belonging to family Alismataceae. At present, it is thought to contain ten species. Variation in ploidy level is known in the genus, with diploids, tetraploids and hexaploids recorded. Previous molecular phylogenetic studies of Alisma have generated a robust backbone that reveals important aspects of the evolutionary history of this cosmopolitan genus, yet questions remain unresolved about the formation of the polyploid taxa and the taxonomy of one particularly challenging, widely distributed species complex. Here we directly sequenced, or cloned and sequenced, nuclear DNA (nrITS and phyA) and chloroplast DNA (matK, ndhF, psbA-trnH and rbcL) of multiple samples of six putative species and two varieties, and conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses. Alisma canaliculatum and its two varieties known in East Asia and A. rariflorum endemic to Japan possess closely related but heterogeneous genomes, strongly indicating that the two species were generated from two diploid progenitors, and are possibly siblings of one another. This evolutionary event may have occurred in Japan. Alisma canaliculatum var. canaliculatum is segregated into two types, each of which are geographically slightly differentiated in Japan. We reconstructed a single phylogeny based on the multi-locus data using Homologizer and then applied species delimitation analysis (STACEY). This allowed us to discern A. orientale as apparently endemic to the Southeast Asian Massif and distinct from the widespread A. plantago-aquatica. The effect of model resolution on the simulation of tropical cyclone (TC) landfall frequency in East Asia [including the South China Sea (SCS), Taiwan and coastal areas of East China (TWCN) and Japan (JP)] was investigated by comparing Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) type simulations on the basis of 50-km High Resolution Atmospheric Models (HiRAMs) and 25-km HiRAM. The number of TC landfalls in the TWCN region was realistically simulated by the 50-km HiRAM ensemble model. However, fewer (more) TCs were steered westward (northward) toward the SCS (JP) because of an overestimation of the monsoon trough in the western North Pacific (WNP). The overestimation created a low-level cyclonic circulation anomaly in the WNP, which substantially modified steering flow. Consequently, more (less) TC made landfall in JP (SCS). The overestimation of the monsoon trough in model was primarily resulted from compounding factors, including the AMIP type simulation, upscale feedback of TCs to mean flow and the monsoon flow–topography interaction in the Indochina Peninsula Mountains and Philippine. First, the SST was negatively correlated with precipitation in the WNP during the typhoon season for the observation. Conversely, the SST–precipitation relationship was positive in the AMIP run. Second, the upscale feedback of TCs to mean flow (monsoon trough) was overestimated, which in term contributed to the overestimation of monsoon trough. Third, the model underestimated the mountain lifting effect in the Indochina Peninsula and Philippine. Overall, the aforementioned biases were substantially improved by increasing model's horizontal resolution from 50-km to 25-km HiRAM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forests provide diverse ecosystem services to people. Consequently, initiatives have been undertaken to restore deforested areas. In East Asian countries, particularly those within the Asian Monsoon region, deforestation has contributed to natural disasters such as sediment run-off, landslides, and flooding, which are exacerbated by torrential rainfall. Restoring forest cover is a critical aspect of national land conservation. To achieve this goal, state-led afforestation initiatives have been launched. Successful afforestation efforts have also been considered an indicator of economic development. However, Japan, which implemented afforestation projects successfully in the 1950s and 1970s, has experienced the under-utilization of its forests due to significant changes in economic and societal conditions since afforestation took place. During the 2010s, the Japanese government promoted the industrialization of forestry, encouraging final felling and reforestation. However, there have been issues with immature forest operation methods and low forestry productivity. Furthermore, in the context of intensifying climate change, heavy rainfall-induced disasters have become more intense, with an increased threat to human safety. Research efforts from the natural and social science fields in Japan have helped identify issues that need to be addressed concerning forests where plantation trees are now utilizable.
