Background: Gait disorder remains a major challenge for individuals with stroke, affecting their quality of life and increasing the risk of secondary complications. Robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) has emerged as a promising approach for improving gait independence in individuals with stroke. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of RAGT in individuals with subacute hemiparetic stroke using a one-leg assisted gait robot called Welwalk WW-1000. Methods: An assessor-blinded, multicenter randomized controlled trial was conducted in the convalescent rehabilitation wards of eight hospitals in Japan. Participants with first-ever hemiparetic stroke who could not walk at pre-intervention assessment were randomized to either the Welwalk group, which underwent RAGT with conventional physical therapy, or the control group, which underwent conventional physical therapy alone. Both groups received 80 min of physical therapy per day, 7 days per week, while the Welwalk group received 40 min of RAGT per day, 6 days per week, as part of their physical therapy. The primary outcome was gait independence, as assessed using the Functional Independence Measure Walk Score. Results: A total of 91 participants were enrolled, 85 of whom completed the intervention. As a result, 91 participants, as a full analysis set, and 85, as a per-protocol set, were analyzed. The primary outcome, the cumulative incidence of gait-independent events, was not significantly different between the groups. Subgroup analysis revealed that the interaction between the intervention group and stroke type did not yield significant differences in either the full analysis or per-protocol set. However, although not statistically significant, a discernible trend toward improvement with Welwalk was observed in cases of cerebral infarction for the full analysis and per-protocol sets (HR 4.167 [95%CI 0.914–18.995], p = 0.065, HR 4.443 [95%CI 0.973–20.279], p = 0.054, respectively). Conclusions: The combination of RAGT using Welwalk and conventional physical therapy was not significantly more effective than conventional physical therapy alone in promoting gait independence in individuals with subacute hemiparetic stroke, although a trend toward earlier gait independence was observed in individuals with cerebral infarction. Welwalk is a one-leg robotic-assisted gait system for stroke hemiplegic patients. This study examined the feasibility and efficacy of gait training using Welwalk (Welwalk training) for hemiplegic patients in the early phase after stroke onset, via cooperation between acute care and rehabilitation hospitals. Seven acute stroke patients (mean number of days fromonset = 7.9) with severe lower extremity paralysis participated. Patients underwent Welwalk training for 40 min/d, 5 d/wk in an acute care hospital, then 7 d/wk in a rehabilitation hospital with a seamless transition. Functional IndependenceMeasure scores for walking were assessed weekly. The endpoint was reaching Functional Independence Measurewalk score of 5 (supervision level). The primary outcomewas improvement efficiency of Functional IndependenceMeasure walk, which was the increase in Functional IndependenceMeasure walk score divided by the number of weeks required. Functional Independence Measure walk score for all patients improved from 1.1 to 5 (P = 0.01, r = 0.96). The mean number of weeks to achieve Functional Independence Measure walk score of 5 was 5 wks, and the improvement efficiency of Functional Independence Measure walk had a mean value of 0.9. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether the sustained use of the "Hug," a "hugging" type robotic transfer support device, could increase the level of quality of care. The effect of proficiency on using the device was examined in terms of time spent for transfer, ratio of transfers using the device, and range of targets. The results were compared between skilled care facilities that had used the device for >24 months and unskilled facilities. The time spent for transfer at the unskilled facility was 4.6 min (2nd week after introduction), was reduced to 3.0 min (5th week), and 1.5 min at the skilled facility. The usage ratio at the unskilled facility was 13% and 30% (2nd and 5th week, respectively), while it was 97% in the skilled facility. Further, we identified wider in the range of target care recipients in the skilled facility. It takes time to master the use of Hug; however, its use was associated with many positive aspects, especially from the perspective of care recipients, e.g., better care, use of their own legs, and reduced time for transfers. These findings suggest that the widespread use of Hug would improve the quality of care. Less physically burdened on the caregivers using Hug, they can afford to talk to the care recipients. Using recipient's own legs during transfers, it prevents leg muscle disuse. As reduced time for transfers, recipients will have more opportunities to get out of bed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to provide an overview of the service system view (SSV), and the current status of its adoption for the development and implementation of assistive technology (AT). The role of ATs in the global aging scenario is anticipated; however, their diffusion is cumbersome. The SSV captures stakeholders, technologies, and their interactions as integrated systems. Based on this perspective, several approaches for designing long‐term care services have been proposed that would be helpful for the successful implementation of ATs. However, the existing geriatrics and gerontology literature seldom addresses these topics. Based on a literature review, this study first illustrates the challenges of using ATs in the real world. The existing literature highlights the sociotechnical challenges of utilizing ATs, such as the changes required in care work and resistance to them. To overcome the challenges, three approaches associated with the SSV have been introduced: service design, service engineering and living labs. This paper also introduces recent national projects in Japan that have adopted these approaches. As the importance of the SSV is growing for the successful implementation of ATs, the ability to adopt the SSV and its approaches is anticipated. Background: Currently, widely used robotic surgical systems do not provide force feedback. This study aimed to evaluate the impact and benefits of a force feedback function on the suturing procedure. Methods: Twenty surgeons were recruited and divided into young (Y-group, n = 11) and senior (S-group, n = 9) groups, based on their years of surgical experience. The effect of the force feedback function on suturing quality was evaluated using an objective assessment system (A-LAP mini, Kyoto Kagaku Co., Ltd., Kyoto, Japan). Each participant completed the suturing task on intestinal model sheets with the robotic contact force feedback on and off. The task accomplishment time (s), maximal force (Newton, N) applied to the robotic forceps, and quality of suturing (assessed by A-LAP mini) were recorded as performance parameters. Results: In total, the maximal force applied to the robotic forceps was significantly decreased with the robotic force feedback switched on (median [interquartile range]: 2.8 N (2.3–3.2)) as compared with when the feedback was switched off (3.4 N (2.7–4.0), P < 0.001). The contact force feedback function did not affect the objectively assessed suturing score (18 points (17.7–19.0) versus 18 points (17.0–19.0), P = 0.421). The contact force feedback function slightly shortened the task accomplishment time in the Y-group (552.5 s (466.5–832) versus 605.5 s (476.2–689.7), P = 0.851) but not in the S-group (566 s (440.2–703.5) versus 470.5 s (419.7–560.2), P = 0.164). Conclusions: With the contact force feedback function, the suturing task was completed with a smaller maximal force, while maintaining the quality of suturing. This work is the extended version of a paper presented at the conference HMM2021, about the history of mechanical engineering. First, the initial cultural and industrial steps in the robotic field in Japan are introduced, to display the beginning of this interlaced path, before WW2; then, in the context of the aftermaths of the war, some famous anime heroes are presented as ancestors of the coming mecha anime series. The rising research in the field of robotics and more generally the developments of contemporary Japanese automation industry are then drawn, as a technological substrate for mecha conception. In particular, Masahiro Mori studies are taken into consideration to identify an actual robot design pattern to apply to the following comparative description and examination of the different mecha; finally, thanks to this analysis, the common breeding ground whence robotics and mecha (and their reciprocal influences) arise, is outlined. Aim: Minimally invasive surgeries for endometrial cancer are increasing worldwide. In Japan, some articles have examined surgical outcomes, but only a few have addressed oncological outcomes. This study aims to compare robot surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and laparotomy in terms of surgical and oncological outcomes within a low‐risk group for endometrial cancer recurrence. Methods: This study included patients with endometrial cancer deemed to be at low risk of recurrence and who underwent surgery between January 2011 and December 2020. We studied 99 patients who underwent robot surgery, 85 patients who underwent laparotomy, and 77 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery. Surgical and oncological outcomes were compared retrospectively for these groups of patients. Results: The median follow‐up period was 47, 61, and 60 months in the laparotomy, laparoscopy, and robotic groups, respectively. The three groups had similar perioperative and pathological data. No significant differences in overall survival and disease‐free survival were observed among the groups. Univariate and multivariate analyses conducted on the overall study population for disease‐free survival and overall survival showed that the surgical approach did not have any influence. Minimally invasive surgery groups had longer operating times compared to the laparotomy group, but they had significantly less blood loss. The number of resected pelvic lymph nodes was similar, and the complication rate was not significant. Conclusions: Robot‐assisted surgery and laparoscopic surgery were found to be less invasive and showed similar oncologic outcomes compared to laparotomy surgery for endometrial cancer in patients with a low risk of recurrence. Background: To investigate the impact of different urinary diversion (UD) techniques on the peri- and postoperative complications of robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) with ileal conduit. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 373 patients undergoing RARC with ileal conduit at 11 institutions in Japan between April 2018 and December 2021. Propensity score weighting was performed to adjust for confounding factors such as age, sex, body mass index, performance status, American Society of Anesthesiologists score, previous abdominal surgery, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and preoperative high T stage (≥ cT3) and high N stage (≥ cN1). Perioperative complications were then compared among three groups: extracorporeal, intracorporeal, and hybrid urinary diversion (ECUD, ICUD, and HUD, respectively). Results: A total of 150, 68, and 155 patients received ECUD, HUD, and ICUD, respectively. Bowel reconstruction time and UD time were significantly shorter in the ECUD group (p < 0.001), and console time was significantly longer and blood loss was significantly higher in the ICUD group (p < 0.001). For postoperative complications (Clavien–Dindo Classification grade ≥ 3), surgical site infection (p = 0.004), pelvic abscess (p = 0.013), anastomotic urine leak (p = 0.007), and pelvic organ prolapse (p = 0.011) significantly occurred in the ECUD group. For all grades, ileus was more common in the HUD group, whereas anastomotic stricture was more common in the ECUD group compared with the other groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Severe complications did not increase after HUD and ICUD compared with ECUD; however, console time tended to be longer and blood loss was slightly higher during RARC. The introduction of companion robots into nursing homes has positive effects on older people with dementia (PwD) but increases the physical and psychological burden on the nursing staff, such as learning how to use them, fear of breakdowns, and concern about hygiene, and the concerns of the nursing home administrator, such as increased turnover and reduced quality of care due to this. To solve this problem, it is necessary to investigate the acceptability of robots from the viewpoints of all stakeholders: PwD as receivers, nursing staff as caregivers, and nursing home administrator as a care facility administrator. However, there is still missing hypothesis about how their acceptability is structured and involved with each other. This study proposes three technology acceptance model (TAMs) from the perspectives of PwD, nursing staff, and nursing home administrator. The models are conceptualized based on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the results of our two experiments involving a baby-like interactive robot to stimulate PwD in the same nursing home (one with low acceptance of all stakeholders and the other with their high acceptance) in addition to the comparison with other companion robots. Based on the proposed models, we discuss an integrated TAM for the acceptance of companion robots in long-term care facilities. We also discuss the possibility of applying our approach, which examines the perspectives of various stakeholders on technology acceptance, to other areas such as health care and education, the ethical consideration of introducing a baby-like robot and some limitations. Background: Robotic gastrectomy (RG) using the da Vinci Surgical System for gastric cancer was approved for national medical insurance coverage in Japan in April 2018, and its number has been rapidly increasing since then. Aim: We reviewed and compared current evidence on RG and conventional laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) to identify the differences in surgical outcomes. Methods: Three independent reviewers systematically reviewed the data collected from a comprehensive literature search by an independent organization, focusing on the following nine endpoints: mortality, morbidity, operative time, estimated blood loss volume, length of postoperative hospital stay, long-term oncologic outcome, quality of life, learning curve, and cost. Results: Compared to LG, RG has lower intraoperative blood loss volume, shorter length of hospital stay, and shorter learning curve, but both procedures have similar mortality. Contrarily, its disadvantages include longer procedural time and higher costs. Although the morbidity rate and long-term outcomes are almost comparable, RG showed superior potentials. Currently, the outcomes of RG are considered comparable to or better than LG. Conclusion: RG might be applicable to all gastric cancer patients who fulfill the indication of LG at institutions that meet specific criteria and are approved to claim the National Health Insurance costs for the use of the surgical robot in Japan. Societies of the East are often contrasted with those of the West in their stances toward technology. This paper explores these perceived differences in the context of international ethics guidance for artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. Japan serves as an example of the East, while Europe and North America serve as examples of the West. The paper's principal aim is to demonstrate that Western values predominate in international ethics guidance and that Japanese values serve as a much-needed corrective. We recommend a hybrid approach that is more inclusive and truly 'international'. Following an introduction, the paper examines distinct stances toward robots that emerged in the West and Japan, respectively, during the aftermath of the Second World War, reflecting history and popular culture, socio-economic conditions, and religious worldviews. It shows how international ethics guidelines reflect these disparate stances, drawing on a 2019 scoping review that examined 84 international AI ethics documents. These documents are heavily skewed toward precautionary values associated with the West and cite the optimistic values associated with Japan less frequently. Drawing insights from Japan's so-called 'moonshot goals', the paper fleshes out Japanese values in greater detail and shows how to incorporate them more effectively in international ethics guidelines for AI and robotics. The present study investigated whether Japanese 3‐, 4‐, and 5‐year‐old children exhibit a yes bias to questions from a physically present humanoid robot, Nao. The robot asked the children yes‐no questions about familiar and unfamiliar objects. To both types of questions, the 3‐year‐old children exhibited a yes bias while the 5‐year‐old children exhibited a nay‐saying bias to questions about unfamiliar objects. The 4‐year‐old children did not exhibit any response biases. These results were not dramatically different from children's response tendencies toward humans reported in previous studies. The results demonstrate that as children might not spontaneously discriminate a real humanoid robot from humans in social situations, they do not hesitate to answer its questions. Focusing on the early work and collaborations of the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, this paper researches links between the robotic culture of postwar Japan and the surge of figuration in postmodernism, challenging the commonly held view that this architectural movement emerged in the West. Specifically, the paper looks at how Isozaki's robotic creation for Expo '70 embodied the notion of theatrical mask, which characterized both postmodern ideals and early Japanese robotics, and influenced his own architectural work. Delving into Isozaki's creative exchanges with the film director Hiroshi Teshigahara and the novelist Kōbō Abe, coming into contact with each other in the 1950s, a synergy between cinema, literature, and architecture is highlighted, considering their speculations about possible technological means of reconstructing the human face in light of the symbolic dimension of this enterprise for Japan as a nation, and for architecture as a discipline. • Surveys for home-care robots were conducted in Japan, Ireland, and Finland. • The study built a model of ethical perceptions regarding the use of home-care robots. • Our final model had explanatory power across countries with different backgrounds. • This model can also be applied to explain ethical perceptions by attributes. To date, research on ethical issues regarding care robots for older adults, family caregivers, and care workers has not progressed sufficiently. This study aimed to build a model that universally explains the relationship between the use of care robots and ethical awareness, such as regarding personal information and privacy protection in home care. We examined data obtained from cross-sectional surveys conducted in Japan (n=528), Ireland (n=296), and Finland (n=180). We performed a confirmatory factor analysis by using responses to 11 items related to the ethical use of care robots. We evaluated the model based on the chi-square to degrees of freedom ratio, the comparative fit index, and the root mean square error of approximation. Subsequently, we compared the model with the Akaike's information criterion. Ten items were adopted in the final model. There were 4 factors in the model: 'acquisition of personal information', 'use of personal information for medical and long-term care', 'secondary use of personal information', and 'participation in research and development'. All factor loadings of the final model ranged between 0.63 and 0.92, which were greater than 0.6, showing that the factors had a high influence on the model. The final model was applied to each country; the fit was relatively good in Finland and poor in Ireland. Although the three countries have different geographies, cultures, demographics, and systems, this study showed that the impact of ethical issues regarding the use of care robots in home care can be universally explained by the same model. This essay tracks the 'human' emergent in human-centred technologies (HCTs) in Japan. A primary aim of HCTs is to extract the true intention of the user and actualise it as machine action. Beyond this, HCT researchers maintained that creating such technologies would give them access to the truth of the human itself. In this essay, I examine the games of truth played in HCT, in which teachers exercise authority over students by defining their true intentions for them, and students learned what they needed to become good researchers. I then show how through analogical relations, human subjects with esteemed qualities became what HCTs must be, and HCTs a means for imagining what human beings truly are. What emerged were truths that transcended human and machine: all are systems of information and, in the end, the right machine can approach humanity enough to fulfil even the most human of responsibilities. Objective: To (1) examine the potentiality of using the robot PARO to mediate care provided by the family and (2) identify problems when utilizing PARO in the home context. Methods: Family members of 7 households were asked to use PARO for at least three times per week, over 1 to 3 months. Research data, including standardized assessments, interviews, and observations, were collected at initial and subsequent monthly visits. Collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and inductive thematic content analysis. Results: Out of the seven participants, five responded positively to PARO, thereby achieving their goals of improving activity engagement, relaxation, a respite from supervision, and improved mood. A positive initial interaction with PARO showed continued interest to it. Participants were observed to communicate with caregivers and relate to PARO. Discussion: The application of PARO at home is possibly influenced by the persons' initial level of interest toward PARO. Aim: This study aimed to describe the interactions between healthcare robots and older persons in two selected institutions. Methods: A qualitative descriptive analysis study using simultaneous observations of healthcare robot and older person interactions was conducted at two healthcare institutions in Japan. The Pepper robot equipped with Care Prevention Gymnastics Exercise programs was used in two situations: (a) exercise regimen led by Pepper; and (b) interactive dialogue between Pepper and older persons during the exercise process. These interactions were recorded using audiovisual equipment and analyzed using content analysis thereby revealing four thematic categories. Interpretation and discussion were structured based on assumptions of the Transactive Relationship Theory of Nursing. Results: The analysis revealed four thematic categories: (a) intermediary participation of healthcare practitioners; (b) technologies of care for practice; (c) human-robot interactions involving artificial intelligence; and (d) valuing safety in nursing through technology. Conclusion: Interactions between healthcare robots and older persons may improve quality of care. However, issues regarding fidelity and functionality of dialogic conversations, and ensuring safety and security of using healthcare robots are recognized as critical nursing practice concerns in healthcare robot use in institutional settings. Encouraging students to actively ask questions during lectures is a formidable challenge that can be addressed through innovative use of information technology. We developed a robotic system that allows students in a lecture to collaboratively decide questions to be asked by a humanoid robot. To verify whether the system reduces hesitation to ask questions during lectures, 62 university students were divided into two groups, and each attended two different mock lectures on the Nobel Prize in Physics. Two lectures were conducted with and without the proposed system in counterbalanced order. Results suggested that students who were usually hesitant to ask questions during lectures became less hesitant to ask questions face‐to‐face when they could use the proposed system. Moreover, the perceived activeness in the lectures increased when using the system. Multiple regression analyses revealed that certain student actions, particularly tweeting and showing agreement with the questions posted by others, were correlated with an increase in perceived activeness. Lay Description: What is already known about this topic: In‐class student passivity is a widespread problem at many schools.Information and robot technologies have focused on addressing student passivity.Existing audience response systems are supportive but with limited degrees of freedom.It is unclear how these systems can encourage face‐to‐face student interactions. Background: Growing evidence for the advantages of robotic pancreatoduodenectomy (RPD) has been demonstrated internationally. However, there has been no structured training program for RPD in Japan. Herein, we present the surgical training model of RPD and a standardized protocol for surgical technique. Methods: The surgical training model and surgical technique were standardized in order to implement RPD safely, based on the Dutch training system collaborated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Results: The surgical training model included various trainings such as basic robotic training, simulation training, biotissue training, and a surgical video review. Furthermore, a standardized protocol on the surgical technique was established to understand the tips, tricks, and pitfalls of RPD. Conclusions: Safe implementation of RPD can be achieved through the completion of a structured training program and learning surgical technique. We reviewed the current evidence on RG, open gastrectomy (OG), and conventional laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) to identify differences in surgical outcomes between Japan and other countries. Briefly, three independent reviewers systematically reviewed the data collected from a comprehensive literature search by an independent organization and focused on the following nine endpoints: mortality, morbidity, operative time, estimated volume of blood loss, length of postoperative hospital stay, long-term oncologic outcome, quality of life, learning curve, and cost. Overall, the mortality rate of the three approaches did not differ, but RG and LG had less intraoperative blood loss and resulted in a shorter postoperative hospital stay than OG. RG had longer operative times and incurred higher costs than LG and OG. However, in Japan, RG may be more effective than LG and OG for decreasing morbidity. Further studies are needed to establish the specific indications for RG, optimal robotic setup, and dissection methods to best utilize the surgical robot. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the COVID-19 pandemic and organizational resilience as unanticipated outcome of introducing socially assistive robots in nursing homes. Topics discussed include the robots were introduced alongside a bedside infrared camera, which, in case of emergencies such as falls; and the 24-week-long, pre-post, quasi-experimental multicenter study in six nursing homes indicated improvements in residents' targeted activities and participation.

Background: Our group developed a rehabilitation robot to assist with repetitive, active reaching movement of a paretic upper extremity. The robot is equipped with a servo motor-controlled arm-weight support and works in conjunction with neuromuscular electrical stimulation and vibratory stimulation to facilitate agonist-muscle contraction. In this before-and-after pilot study, we assessed the feasibility of applying the robot to improve motor control and function of the hemiparetic upper extremity in patients who suffered chronic stroke.Methods: We enrolled 6 patients with chronic stroke and hemiparesis who, while sitting and without assistance, could reach 10 cm both sagitally and vertically (from a starting position located 10 cm forward from the patient's navel level) with the affected upper extremity. The patients were assigned to receive reaching exercise intervention with the robot (Yaskawa Electric Co., Ltd. Fukuoka, Japan) for 2 weeks at 15 min/day in addition to regular occupational therapy for 40 min/day. Outcomes assessed before and after 2 weeks of intervention included the upper extremity component of the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (UE-FMA), the Action Research Arm Test (ARAT), and, during reaching movement, kinematic analysis.Results: None of the patients experienced adverse events. The mean score of UE-FMA increased from 44.8 [SD 14.4] to 48.0 [SD 14.4] (p = 0.026, r = 0.91), and both the shoulder-elbow and wrist-hand scores increased after 2-week intervention. An increase was also observed in ARAT score, from mean 29.8 [SD 16.3] to 36.2 [SD 18.1] (p = 0.042, r = 0.83). Kinematic analysis during the reaching movement revealed a significant increase in active range of motion (AROM) at the elbow, and movement time tended to decrease. Furthermore, trajectory length for the wrist ("hand path") and the acromion ("trunk compensatory movement") showed a decreasing trend.Conclusions: This robot-assisted modality is feasible and our preliminary findings suggest it improved motor control and motor function of the hemiparetic upper extremity in patients with chronic stroke. Training with this robot might induce greater AROM for the elbow and decrease compensatory trunk movement, thus contributing to movement efficacy and efficiency. Aim: The primary aim of this study was to examine the impact of age, gender and the stage of dementia on the results of an assistive technology intervention that make use of communication robots (com‐robots). The intervention was designed to improve the social participation and interactions of nursing home residents. While our previous study showed that the overall effects of com‐robot intervention were positive, it was unknown what impact age, gender and the stage of dementia of participants had on such an intervention. Methods: This was a non‐randomized, multicenter quasi‐experimental intervention study conducted in residential care homes in Japan. Two types of com‐robots were introduced for 8 weeks after baseline evaluation. The World Health Organization's ICF was used for evaluating any changes present after the 8‐week intervention. In total, 78 residents (68 women, 10 men, 86.5 ± 7.7 years old) participated in the study. The Degree of Daily Life Independence Score for People with Dementia (DDLIS‐PD) was employed for measuring the stage of dementia. Results: The results showed that the older participants aged ≥80 benefited more from the intervention than the younger cohort did (P < 0.05). A greater improvement was shown among those with a more advanced stage of dementia than those at a less advanced stage (P < 0.05), when using DDLIS‐PD. Conclusions: The overall findings support the use of com‐robots within the context of a care team for older people with moderate dementia, and those who are aged ≥80 years. When Buddhism fails to live up to the projected promise of its doctrine or past forms, it is often the human nature of its adherents ("Bad Buddhists"), rather than the content of its teachings ("Bad Buddhism"), that is blamed. But what if such human failings--greed, corruption, violence, even mortality--could be transcended? In the quest for a "good Buddhism," high-tech designs that utilise robotics, artificial intelligence, algorithmic agency, and other advancements are increasingly pursued as solutions by innovators inside and outside Buddhist communities. In this paper, we interrogate two recent cases of what we call "Buddhist techno-salvationism." Firstly, Pepper, the semi-humanoid robot who performs funeral sutras to a rapidly secularising and aging population of parishioners in Japan. Secondly, the Lotos Network, a US start-up proposing to use blockchain technology to combat financial corruption within global sangha. We argue that such robotic and digital experiments are the logical outcome of techno-salvationist discourses that identify human failings as the principal barrier to perfect Buddhist praxis. Construction of infrastructures, such as bridges and tunnels, has increased significantly in Japan in the past 50 years. Most of the civil infrastructure is now aging rapidly. Basic infrastructure maintenance and management require proper repairing and reinforcement, for which periodic inspections are indispensable. Inspection of civil infrastructure, however, requires a large amount of workforce for traffic regulation and accessing difficult-to-reach locations. Occupational safety is also an important issue that cannot be ignored. Furthermore, technologies related to emergency responses after the occurrence of natural disasters are important, especially with the increasing number of natural disasters recently. Executing a safe and quick disaster response action is very challenging. To meet the above problems, "Infrastructure Maintenance, Renovation and Management" was established in the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP). Research and development programs for infrastructure management systems using new technologies had been conducted since 2014. In this paper, the research and development programs related to robotic technologies are described. Specifically, robotic technologies for bridge inspection, tunnel inspection, and disaster responses are introduced. This paper presents several multi-modal 3D datasets for the problem of categorization of places. In this problem. a robotic agent should decide on the type of place/environment where it is located (residential area, forest, etc.) using information gathered by its sensors. In addition to the 3D depth information, the datasets include additional modalities such as RGB or reflectance images. The observations were taken in different indoor and outdoor environments in Fukuoka city, Japan. Outdoor place categories include forests, urban areas, indoor parking, outdoor parking, coastal areas, and residential areas. Background and Objectives Recent years have seen social robotic pets introduced as a means of treating behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, and many show promising potential. In this study, we sought to explore family members' perceptions of the Japanese-developed baby harp seal, Paro (version 9), and a look-alike, nonrobotic Plush Toy, when used by their relative with dementia for 15 min, 3 afternoons per week for 10 weeks. Research Design and Method The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, which was nested within a larger cluster randomized controlled trial. A convenience sample of 20 family members (n = 10 each from the Paro and Plush Toy conditions) with relatives in 9 long-term care facilities in Queensland, Australia, completed individual semi-structured interviews (telephone or face-to-face). Inductive, data-driven thematic analysis of the data was undertaken with the assistance of the qualitative management software, ATLAS.ti®. Results Family members of long-term care residents with dementia expressed positive perceptions of the Paro, perceiving that it improved mood, reduced agitation, and provided opportunity for communication for their relative. Negative perceptions of the Plush Toy were given by family members, primarily because of its lack of movement and engagement. Conclusion Family members were keen for their older relative with dementia to use a social robot that moved and engaged with them, and Plush Toys that were static and unresponsive were perceived as being unimportant in improving quality of life. Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze and compare elderly care personnel attitudes toward care robots in Finland and Japan. Design: Cross‐sectional survey in Finland and Japan. Methods: The Finnish sample was collected from care personnel in home care facilities in five municipalities in 2016. The Japanese sample was collected from personnel in two rehabilitative day centers and three residential care homes for the elderly in the north of Honshu Island in 2017. The data were analyzed using basic statistical methods and calculated descriptive statistics (frequencies). Differences between the Finnish and Japanese data have been analyzed using the Mann‐Whitney U test. Findings: Overall, Japanese care personnel assessed the usefulness of robots more positively than did their Finnish counterparts. The data showed substantial national differences in the perceived importance of various potential tasks for care robots. The findings show that there are also certain fears related to the introduction of care robots, in particular among the Finnish care personnel. Discussion: The data from the Japanese care personnel bring new perspectives to the concept of a close human–robot relationship. The differences seen in the results between Finland and Japan can be partly explained by cultural dissimilarity, but it is also known that Japan is a more developed country with regard to the use of robotics in nursing care. The research highlights the importance of cultural factors when examining the issue of care robotics. The factors affecting fear are a concern that care robots would be used to replace people, the dehumanization of treatment, and an increased loneliness in the elderly. Thus, further research is required to demonstrate the relationship between different cultural factors, and attitudes and conceptions toward care robots. Clinical Relevance: Management plays a key role when implementing robotics. It is important to help care personnel accept care robots, and to diminish any fears that their introduction would make the treatment of elderly people inhumane or in some way add to their loneliness. As such, education is crucial in changing attitudes and making care personnel understand that care robots can perform routine tasks, allowing care personnel to focus on providing improved care and nursing. Background: We conducted a retrospective study to compare the perioperative course and lymph node (LN) counts of patients undergoing limited pelvic lymphadenectomy (lPLND) or extended pelvic lymphadenectomy (ePLND) during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy in an initial Japanese series.Methods: The cohort included 1333 patients who underwent either lPLND (n = 902) or ePLND (n = 431) during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy at five institutions in Japan. All complications within 28 days of surgery were recorded, and clinical data were collected retrospectively. The outcomes and complications were compared relative to the extent of lymphadenectomy, and we conducted univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses to assess the predictors of the major complications.Results: On multivariate analysis for evaluating the associations between major complications and perioperative characteristics, console time (p = 0.001) was significantly associated with major complications, although the extent of lymphadenectomy (p = 0.272) was not significantly associated with major complications. In the distribution of positive LNs removed in the extended pelvic lymphadenectomy cohort, 60.4% of patients had positive LNs only in the obturator/internal iliac region. However, 22.6% of the patients with positive LNs had no positive LNs in the obturator/internal iliac region, but only in the external/common iliac region.Conclusions: ePLND, which significantly increased the console time and blood loss but nearly quadrupled the lymph node yield, is considered a relatively safe and acceptable procedure. Abstract: This study investigated the responses of 4‐ and 5‐year‐old Japanese children to yes‐no questions about familiar and unfamiliar objects that were asked by a communicative or a non‐communicative humanoid robot. The children in the communicative condition watched a pretrial video in which a humanoid robot interacted with a human adult, and those in the non‐communicative condition watched a pretrial video in which the same humanoid robot was unresponsive to the same human adult's utterances and actions. Then, all the children watched a video in which the robot asked 24 yes‐no questions. The results indicated that 4‐ and 5‐year‐olds in the two conditions showed similar response tendencies, with no age differences. Further, the children showed no response biases to familiar objects and nay‐saying bias to unfamiliar objects. Children's perception of robots is discussed. BACKGROUND: The robotic Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) provides motion according to the wearer's voluntary activity. HAL training effects on walking speed and capacity have not been clarified in subacute stroke. OBJECTIVES: To determine improvement in walking ability by HAL and the most effective improvement measure for use in future large-scale trials. METHODS: Sixteen first-ever hemiplegic stroke patients completed at least 20 sessions over 5 weeks. Per session, the experimental group received no more than 20 min of gait training with HAL (HT) and 40 min of conventional physiotherapy, whereas the control group received at least 60 min of conventional physiotherapy. Primary outcome was maximum walking speed (MWS). RESULTS: The change in MWS from baseline at week 5 was 11.6±10.6 m/min (HAL group) and 2.2±4.1 m/min (control group) (adjusted mean difference = 9.24 m/min, 95% confidence interval 0.48-18.01, P = 0.040). In HAL subjects there were significant increases in Self-selected walking speed (SWS; a secondary outcome) and in step length (a secondary outcome) at MWS and SWS compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS: HT improved walking speed in hemiplegic sub-acute stroke patients. In future, randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the utility of HT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To avert potential crisis from Japan’s aging infrastructure and declining birth rate, the Japanese Government is planning to introduce robotic technology for the inspection of social infrastructure (such as pipes, dams, and bridges). Recording underwater positions is a difficult task for human divers who undertake conventional dam inspections. This study presents the Anchor Diver 5.2 system for efficient and effectual dam inspection. Anchor Diver 5.2 is based on an extended-tether-maneuvered remotely operated vehicle (ROV) equipped with cameras. The ROV is lowered into water by a hoist system from a boat and implements a visual survey of the concrete underwater structure. To improve the visibility of the ROV in murky and cloudy water, a novel concept named Water Loupe is proposed. In addition, a simple boat-fixing method is proposed to provide a stable base on the water surface, and the underwater position of the ROV, which cannot be accessed by global positioning systems, is recorded using a feasible localization method. Faced with a declining birthrate and aging population, the Japanese government has been adopting policies to promote the R&D of next-generation robots (hereinafter 'NGRs') which are seen as key to solving issues of labor shortage and enhance global competitiveness of the Japanese economy. However, the legal environment surrounding NGRs is not developer-friendly, and may hamper their proliferation and use. In order to address this issue, the first section of this paper explains the legal status of NGRs in Japan, followed by a section focusing on the legal regulations in Japan which involve the developers, manufacturers, distributors, and operators of NGRs. The final section outlines the current situation of various policies adopted by the Japanese government to enhance and accelerate the development of NGRs. The aim of this paper was to show how NGRs are regarded under the laws of Japan and what legal barriers the NGR-related parties confront, and provide insight into how the Japanese government is trying to promote the development of NGRs. Using interviews, participant observation, and published documents, this article analyzes the co-construction of robotics and culture in Japan through the technical discourse and practices of robotics researchers. Three cases from current robotics research – the seal-like robot PARO, the Humanoid Robotics Project HRP-2 humanoid, and ‘kansei robotics’ – show the different ways in which scientists invoke culture to provide epistemological grounding and possibilities for social acceptance of their work. These examples show how the production and consumption of social robotic technologies are associated with traditional crafts and values, how roboticists negotiate among social, technical, and cultural constraints while designing robots, and how humans and robots are constructed as cultural subjects in social robotics discourse. The conceptual focus is on the repeated assembly of cultural models of social behavior, organization, cognition, and technology through roboticists’ narratives about the development of advanced robotic technologies. This article provides a picture of robotics as the dynamic construction of technology and culture and concludes with a discussion of the limits and possibilities of this vision in promoting a culturally situated understanding of technology and a multicultural view of science. Humanoid robots are often experienced as unnerving, a psychological phenomenon called the "uncanny valley." Past work reveals that humanlike robots are unnerving in part because they are ascribed humanlike feelings. We leverage this past work to provide a potential solution to the uncanny valley. Three studies reveal that "dehumanizing" humanoid robots—stripping robots of their apparent capacity for feelings—can significantly reduce the uncanny valley. Participants high on trait dehumanization (Study 1) or experimentally instructed to dehumanize (Study 2) reported lower feelings of uncanniness when viewing a humanoid robot, an effect mediated by reduced perceptions of feelings. We replicate these effects in an experimental field study where hotel guests interacted with real humanoid robots in Japan, and reveal that dehumanization reduces the uncanny valley without decreasing customers' satisfaction (Study 3). • The uncanny valley can be mitigated by a dehumanization manipulation. • This effect is mediated by reduced experience perceptions. • This simple manipulation can improve user experience of humanoid robots. The rapid progress of molecular nanotechnology has opened the door to molecular robotics, which uses molecules as robot components. In order to promote this new paradigm, the Molecular Robotics Research Group was established in the Systems and Information Division of the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE) in 2010. The group consists of researchers from various fields including chemistry, biophysics, DNA nanotechnology, systems science and robotics, challenging this emerging new field. Last year, the group proposed a research project focusing on molecular robotics, and it was recently awarded a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas (FY2012-16), one of the large-scale research projects in Japan, by MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, JAPAN). Here, we wish to clarify the fundamental concept and research direction of molecular robotics. Purpose: Our previous work proposed a rehabilitation robot to support bimanual-coordinated training not only in active-assisted and passive-driven modes but also in active-resisted mode. However, assessment of training effect was only focused on the improvements of subjects' motion-tracking precisions. This paper presents an evaluation strategy based on variations in both cerebral activation level (CAL) and motion-tracking precision. Method:Fourteen healthy subjects participated in motion-tracking training in bimanual active-assisted and active-resisted modes, and in single right-limb and left-limb modes, with haemoglobin concentration and motion-tracking errors being measured simultaneously. Analyses of variance (ANOVA) of the CAL and motion-tracking errors were performed to investigate bimanual training effect and the difference between bimanual and single-limb trainings in activating the brain. Results: In the bimanual modes, both the CAL and motion-tracking precision significantly increased after training. And the CAL induced in the bimanual trainings were significantly greater than in the single-limb trainings. Conclusions:Significant enhancement of the CAL and motion-tracking precision confirmed a positive training effect on enhancing the bimanual-coordination capability of healthy subjects. Compared to the single-limb modes, the higher CAL in the bimanual modes demonstrated the potential of the proposed bimanual training for improving the functional integrity of the two hemispheres. The paper deals with the evaluation of the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) accident in Units 1 to 4: an attempt is made to discuss the scenario within a technological framework, considering precursory documented regulations and predictable system performance. An outline is given at first of the NPP layout and of the sequence of major events. Then, plausible time evolutions of relevant quantities in the different Units, is inferred based on results from the application of numerical codes. Scenarios happening in the primary circuit and containment (three Units involved) are distinguished from scenarios in spent fuel pool (fourUnits involved). Radiological releases to the environment and doses are approximately estimated. The event is originated by a natural catastrophe with almost simultaneous occurrence of earthquake and tsunami. These caused heavy destruction in a region in Japan much wider than the land around the NPP which was affected by the nuclear contamination. Key outcome from the work is the demonstration of strength for nuclear technology; looking at the past, misleading Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) data and inadequacy in licensing processes have been found. This paper explores the processes by which humanoid robots become sites of affective investment in contemporary Japan. It particularly analyses how narratives of intimacy, conventionally found in relationships between humans, are being reproduced and embodied in interactions with humanoid robots. It uses ethnographic research on participants in Robo-One, one of Japan's most popular robotics events, to examine the development of intimate relationships between the human and the robotic, understood in terms of kokoro (loosely translated as 'heart'). The robot's heart emerges in the grey area between technological material and human imagination. Through the respective processes of tinkering and spectating, both robot builders and 'robot watchers' experience the intimacy that results from apprehending the robot's heart. This experience creates an endless hermeneutic circle, drawing together subject and object, original and copy, creator and created, and watcher and watched, to ultimately reconfigure participants' senses of their own kokoro. Background: The authors developed a novel technique to improve tendon-bone attachment by hybridizing calcium phosphate with a tendon graft using an alternate soaking process. However, the long-term result is unclear regarding the function of the anterior cruciate ligament–reconstructed knee and the interface between the tendon and the bone.Purpose: To clarify the effects of the calcium phosphate–hybridized tendon graft by analyzing the biomechanical behavior of the reconstructed knee, bone tunnel wall, and interface between the tendon and the bone, compared with the untreated knee at 1 year in goats.Study Design: Controlled laboratory study.Methods: The authors analyzed knee kinematics and in situ forces in a replacement graft, as well as computed tomography for new bone formation in the bone tunnel and histology of the tendon-bone interface, with and without the calcium phosphate–hybridized tendon graft.Results: In the calcium phosphate group, the anteroposterior translations in the reconstructed knees were shorter and the corresponding in situ forces greater than those in the control group at full extension and 60° of knee flexion. The in situ force in response to applied internal tibial torques in the calcium phosphate group at full extension was greater than that in the control group. More new bone formation in the bone tunnel and cartilage layer between the tendon-bone interface at the joint aperture site of the calcium phosphate group was observed than in the control group.Conclusion: The calcium phosphate–hybridized tendon graft promotes knee stability because of the firm tendon-bone healing with cartilage layer and new bone formation.Clinical Relevance: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using the calcium phosphate–hybridized tendon graft may lead to good long-term outcomes. The belief that computers will soon become transcendently intelligent and that human beings will 'upload' their minds into machines has become ubiquitous in public discussions of robotics and artificial intelligence in Western cultures. Such beliefs are the result of pervasive Judaeo-Christian apocalyptic beliefs, and they have rapidly spread through modern pop and technological culture, including such varied and influential sources as Rolling Stone, the IEEE Spectrum, and official United States government reports. They have gained sufficient credibility to enable the construction of Singularity University in California. While different approaches are possible (and, indeed, are common in Japan and possibly elsewhere), this particular vision of artificial intelligence and robotics has gained ground in the West through the influence of figures such as Hans Moravec and Ray Kurzweil. Because pop-science books help frame public discussion of new sciences and technologies for individuals, corporations, and governments alike, the integration of religious and technoscientific claims made by their authors should be clear and open for public and scientific debate. As we move forward into an increasingly robotic future, we should do so aware of the ways in which a group's religious environment can help set the tone for public acceptance and use of robotic technologies. The challenges in developing a fruit harvesting robot are recognizing the fruit in the foliage and detaching the fruit from the tree without damaging either the fruit or the tree. The objectives of this study were to develop a real-time fruit detection system using machine vision and a laser ranging sensor and to develop an end effector capable of detaching the fruit in a way similar to manual pick. The Fuji apple variety was used in this study. In the detection of the fruit, machine vision was combined with a laser ranging sensor. The machine vision recognized the fruit and the laser ranging sensor determined the distance. The system detected a single fruit with 100% accuracy in both front and back lighted scenes with ±3 mm accuracy in distance measurement. To detach the fruit from the tree, an end effector was developed with a peduncle holder and a wrist; the peduncle holder pinches the peduncle of the fruit and the wrist rotates the peduncle holder to detach the fruit. Field test results of the end effector showed more than 90% success rate in detaching the fruit with average time use of 7.1 seconds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ubiquitous robotics has recently been proposed and many methods have been suggested to implement this concept. In many cases, software modularization and middleware technology are adopted. However, different middlewares are used for each case since there is no standard for such a technology. Thus, the implemented robot space keeps a ubiquitous concept only under its own standard. To remedy this problem, this paper presents a connection method of two middlewares for securing the compatibility between two ubiquitous robot spaces. In the proposed method, the target middlewares are RT-Middleware of Japan and CAMUS of South Korea. By making a bridge between two middlewares, the service provided by the RT-Middleware side can be available to the CAMUS side and also the service provided by the CAMUS side can be used by the RT-Middleware side. The article discusses the field of space robotics and society's need for it. It underscores Japan's contribution to robotic technology used in unmanned space missions. Information on the utility of robot technology in maintaining social infrastructure such as roads, main water and electrical supply by 2050 is also expounded on.
