Steady-state photocapacitance (SSPC) was conducted on nonpolar m-plane GaN n-type Schottky diodes to evaluate the defects induced by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) dry etching in etched-and-regrown unipolar structures. An ∼10× increase in the near-midgap Ec – 1.9 eV level compared to an as-grown material was observed. Defect levels associated with regrowth without an etch were also investigated. The defects in the regrown structure (without an etch) are highly spatially localized to the regrowth interface. Subsequently, by depth profiling an etched-and-regrown sample, we show that the intensities of the defect-related SSPC features associated with dry etching depend strongly on the depth away from the regrowth interface, which is also reported previously [Nedy et al., Semicond. Sci. Technol. 30, 085019 (2015); Fang et al., Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 42, 4207–4212 (2003); and Cao et al., IEEE Trans. Electron Devices 47, 1320–1324 (2000)]. A photoelectrochemical etching (PEC) method and a wet AZ400K treatment are also introduced to reduce the etch-induced deep levels. A significant reduction in the density of deep levels is observed in the sample that was treated with PEC etching after dry etching and prior to regrowth. An ∼2× reduction in the density of Ec – 1.9 eV level compared to a reference etched-and-regrown structure was observed upon the application of PEC etching treatment prior to the regrowth. The PEC etching method is promising for reducing defects in selective-area doping for vertical power switching structures with complex geometries [Meyers et al., J. Electron. Rules and regulations for ambulance operations differ across countries and regions, however, little is known about ambulance crashes outside of the United States. Japan is unique in several aspects, for example, routine use of lights and sirens during response and transport regardless of the urgency of the case and low speed limits for ambulances. The aim of this study was to describe the incidence and characteristics of ambulance crashes in Japan. We retrospectively analyzed data from the Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis (ITARDA) that include all traffic crashes resulting in injury or death in Japan. The study included all ambulance crashes from 2009 to 2018. We compared crashes that occurred during emergency operations with lights and sirens (i.e., when responding to a call or transporting a patient) to those that occurred during non-emergency operations without lights or sirens. We also used data on total number of ambulance dispatches from the Japanese Fire and Disaster Management Agency to calculate ambulance crash risk. During the 10-year period, we identified a total of 486 ambulance crashes out of 59,208,761 ambulance dispatches (0.82 in every 100,000 dispatches or one crash for every 121,829 dispatches) that included two fatal crashes. Among all ambulance crashes, 142 (29.2%) occurred during emergency operations. The incidence of ambulance crashes decreased significantly over the 10-year period. Ambulance crashes at an intersection occurred more frequently during emergency operations than during non-emergency operations (72.5% vs. 58.1%; 14.4% difference, 95% CI 5.0–22.9). Ambulance crashes occurred infrequently in Japan with crash rates much lower than previously reported crash rates in the United States. Ambulance crashes during emergency operations occurred more frequently at intersections compared to non-emergency operations. Further investigation of the low Japanese ambulance crash rates could provide opportunities to improve ambulance safety in other countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the increasing frequency of heart failure (HF) in elderly patients, polypharmacy has become a major concern owing to its adverse outcomes. However, reports on the clinical impact of polypharmacy and discharge medications in hospitalized super-aged patients with acute HF are rare. Data from 682 patients aged 80 years or older, hospitalized for treating acute HF, were analyzed. We recorded the number of medications at discharge and classified them into three groups: HF, non-HF cardiovascular, and non-cardiovascular medications. We investigated the correlation of polypharmacy, defined as daily administration of 10 or more medications at discharge, and the use of discharge medications with post-discharge prognosis. Polypharmacy was recorded in 24.3% of enrolled patients. Polypharmacy was not an independent predictor of all-cause mortality, the incidence of cardiac-related death, or HF-associated rehospitalization; however, the number of non-cardiovascular medications, multiple usage of potentially inappropriate medications, use of mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, and doses of loop diuretics were associated with poor prognosis. Polypharmacy was significantly associated with higher mortality in patients with Barthel index ≥ 60 at discharge; hence, physical function at discharge was useful for the stratification of prognostic impacts of polypharmacy. The current study demonstrated that polypharmacy was not essentially associated with poor prognosis in super-aged patients with acute HF. Since the identification of a chimeric aldosterone synthase which induces mendelian hypertension, polymorphisms in aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2) has been one of major targets for molecular analyses in association with hypertension. To date, four polymorphic variants of CYP11B2, -344T/C at promoter region, a gene conversion in intron 2, 2713A/G (in exon 3) which converts from Lys to Arg at codon 173 (K173R), and 4986T/C (in exon7) which converts from Val to Ala at codon 386 (V386A), have been identified in Caucasian population. Then, linkage disequilibrium between -344T/C polymorphism and a gene conversion in intron 2 or K173R mutation has been described, suggesting the presence of genetic haplotypes in Caucasians. Since the presence of a gene conversion in intron 2 or V386A mutation was still unknown in the Japanese population, all these polymorphisms were examined together to determine the CYP11B2 haplotypes of Japanese, using DNA samples from 1290 participants of the Ohasama study, who represent the general population of a rural community of northern Japan. Molecular analyses demonstrated the presence of a gene conversion of intron 2, but the absence of V386A mutation in Japanese population. The complete linkage disequilibrium between -344T/C polymorphism and K173R mutation was noted. Although -344T allele was linked either with a gene conversion in intron 2 or with normal intron 2, -344C allele was completely linked with normal intron 2. These results indicate the presence of 3 allelic haplotypes of CYP11B2, -344C with normal intron 2 and 173R, -344T with normal intron 2 and 173K, and -344T with converted intron 2 and 173K, in the general Japanese population. The frequency (total 1.0) was 0.35, 0.53, and 0.12, respectively. The presence of allelic haplotypes is considered to be an additional genetic information to individual polymorphism of CYP11B2 to determine the linkage between CYP11B2 polymorphisms and hypertension.
