As a national study, we evaluated the frequencies of irregular erythrocyte antibodies (Abs) by gender and history of transfusion or pregnancy. In total, data from 248,785 patients were analyzed, from whom 4222 irregular erythrocyte Abs were detected in 3554 cases (1.43%). Abs frequencies in these 4222 cases were as follows: anti-E, 26%; anti-Le(a), 26%; anti-P(1), 11%; anti-M, 6%; anti-E+c, 4%; anti-Fy(b), 4%; anti-Di(a), 3%; anti-Le(b), 3%; and anti-D, 2%. In pregnancy, anti-D (5%), anti-Jr(a) (3%) and anti-E+c (6%) Abs were, with statistical significance, more frequent. Among transfused patients, anti-E (38%), anti-E+c (8%), anti-Jk(a) (4%), anti-e+C (2%) and anti-E+Jk(a) (1%) Abs were, with statistical significance, more frequent., ((c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Two cases of hemolytic disease of new born in a Chinese family are reported. The hemolysis was due to the production in the mother of antibodies against fractions A, C, and D of Rh(D) antigen. The fractions were absent in the mother's red blood cells which are Rh(DB) but present in her babies. Rh(DB) may be detected by the use of two types of anti-D sera, one with and the other without anti-DB activity. For transfusion purpose, all DB patients so tested, would be regarded as Rh(D) negative.

An example of red cells having no reaction with any Rh antisera was found in a Japanese woman. Results of a serological investigation of the family indicated the action of a 'regulator' gene. Her serum contained an antibody which agglutinated all cells of common Rh types, except for Rhnull, by the saline, anti-globulin and papain techniques.

This report describes a Japanese family have two Rhmod members, and two sibs with slightly depressed Rh antigens. It is proposed that the Rhmod and the depressed Rh antigen phenotypes are due to regulator genes in homozygous or heterozygous condition, respectively. The two Rhmod members showed mild reticulocytosis, stomatocytosis, slight anisocytosis, slight hyperchromia and slight punctate basophilia without anaemia. Scanning electron microscopy showed their red cells to be small and of bowl shape. Increased fragility of their erythrocytes was demonstrated by dynamic osmofragility testing using a coil planet centrifuge.
