Japan witnessed the outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in March – May 2020. We examined whether the impact of COVID-19 on people seeking help from mental and physical health professionals varied with changes in employment (from full-time employment to unemployment or leave of absence) and psychological predisposition to new-type depression (Interpersonal Sensitivity [IS]/Privileged Self [PS]) associated with the pandemic. An online survey was conducted in June 2020 (after the outbreak of COVID-19) among people who were full-time employees as of April 2019. Data from 1,053 individuals were analyzed. The survey asked about regular visits to health professionals one year prior to the survey (June 2019) and at the time of the survey. Employment status, personality traits, and demographic characteristics were also examined. We found that consultation rates changed little before and after the pandemic. Logistic regression analysis showed that after controlling for age and gender, being unemployed or absent from work after the pandemic and having higher scores for IS/PS were positively associated with regular visits to health professionals. Considering that COVID-19 has been shown to increase the incidence of physical and mental illness, the finding that the rate of consultations remained unchanged implies that consultations were withheld. Objectives: Studies have examined the association between personality and health behaviour, but research focusing exclusively on regular dental visits has yet to be conducted. This study examined the association between personality traits and regular dental visits among Japanese community‐dwelling older adults. Methods: The participants in this cross‐sectional study included 1,057 community‐dwelling older adults aged 65–74 years from Ranzan and Yoshimi towns; data were collected from October to November 2015 and October to November 2016, respectively. Interviews were conducted to obtain sociodemographic, income, occupation and medical data. The Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence was used to assess higher‐level competence; general intelligence was also evaluated. The 'Big Five' personality traits—openness to experience, consciousness, neuroticism, extraversion and agreeableness—were also examined. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the relationship between regular dental visits and personality traits. Results: Among men, the number of natural teeth, current employment status and conscientiousness were associated with dental care utilization. Among women, the number of natural teeth, current annual income, the intellectual activity domain of the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence and openness were significant. Conclusions: The factors associated with regular dental visits differed by gender. Overall, work was associated with men's visits, whereas intellectual activity and economic factors were relevant to women. Factors such as personality traits should be considered when addressing barriers to oral health. The purpose of this study was a cross-cultural examination of centenarians' personality through a person-centered approach to examine if there is a "resilient" personality profile consistent across cultures. Proxy reports information was obtained from family and close friends of 239 U.S. centenarians from the Georgia Centenarians Study and 272 Japanese centenarians from the Tokyo Centenarian Study. Latent profile analyses were conducted to identify personality profiles in centenarians from the United States and Japan. Two personality profiles were identified in both samples: a "resilient" personality profile and "nonresilient" personality profile. The "resilient" group had higher levels of positive personality traits with higher scores on agreeableness and extraversion and lower scores on neuroticism, conscientiousness, and openness. The "nonresilient" group had higher scores on neuroticism and lower scores on extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. Background: Organizational justice has recently been introduced as a new concept as psychosocial determinants of employee health, and an increase in precarious employment is a challenging issue in occupational health. However, no study investigated the association of organizational justice with mental health among employees while taking into account employment contract. Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the prospective association of organizational justice (procedural justice and interactional justice) with psychological distress by employment contract among Japanese employees. Methods: A total of 373 males and 644 females from five branches of a manufacturing company in Japan were surveyed. At baseline (August 2009), self-administered questionnaires, including the Organizational Justice Questionnaire (OJQ), the K6 scale (psychological distress scale), the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised (EPQ-R), and other covariates, were used. After one-year follow-up (August 2010), the K6 scale was used again to assess psychological distress. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted by sex and employment contract. Results: After adjusting for demographic characteristics, psychological distress, and neuroticism at baseline, low procedural justice was significantly associated with a higher risk of psychological distress at follow-up among non-permanent female employees, while no significant association of procedural justice or interactional justice with psychological distress at follow-up was observed among permanent male or female employees. The results of non-permanent male employees could not be calculated because of small sample size. Background: The Inventory of Personality Organisation (IPO) is a self-report measure that reflects personality traits, as theorised by Kernberg. Methods: In study 1, the Japanese version of the IPO was distributed to a population of Japanese university students (N = 701). The students were randomly divided into two groups. The factor structure derived from an exploratory factor analysis among one subsample was tested using a confirmatory factor structure among another subsample. In study 2, the factor-driven subscales of the IPO were correlated with other variables that would function as external criteria to validate the scale in a combined population of the students used in study 1 and psychiatric outpatients (N = 177). Results: In study 1 the five-factor structure presented by the original authors was replicated in exploratory factor analyses in one subgroup of students. However, this was through reduction of the number of items (the number of the primary items was reduced from 57 to 24 whereas the number of the additional items was reduced from 26 to 13) due to low endorsement frequencies as well as low factor loadings on a designated factor. The new factor structure was endorsed by a confirmatory factor analysis in the other student subgroup. In study 2 the new five subscales of the Japanese IPO were likely to be correlated with younger age, more personality psychopathology (borderline and narcissistic), more dysphoric mood, less psychological well-being, more insecure adult attachment style, lower self-efficacy, and more frequent history of childhood adversity. The IPO scores were found to predict the increase in suicidal ideation in a week's time in a longitudinal follow-up. Conclusion: Although losing more than 40% of the original items, the Japanese IPO may be a reliable and valid measure of Kernberg's personality organisation for Japanese populations. This study is a part of our series of studies of nonpatient, Japanese children. In total, 346 children were administered the Rorschach. Thirty-two children had fewer than 10 responses, 112 children had more than 10 but fewer than 14 responses, and 12 children were maladjusted or mentally retarded, for a total of 156. In this study, we analyzed the remaining 190 children not excluded by the above criteria in the following age groups: 5 years (n = 24), 8 years (n = 43), 9 years (n = 42), 12 years (n = 42), and 14 years (n = 39). Japanese children showed few responses generally, with an average of 18 ~ 20 responses. In addition to having fewer responses, other features of Japanese children are high Lambda, low EA, very high X–%, and low X+%. The fact that the Rorschach test depends on verbal expression may be one factor in all these features, and we should consider this study in view of these Japanese cultural factors. This Introduction provides an overview to the JPA Special Supplement on International Reference Samples for the Rorschach Comprehensive System (CS; Exner, 2001). It contains a history of this project and a table including all of the lead authors, their country and the type and size of their sample. Suggestions for conducting this type of research are offered, including information on normative vs. nonpatient samples, inclusion/exclusion criteria, the use of collateral instruments, and concerns relative to representativeness. This paper analyzes the correlations between a Japanese adjective list for personality traits and the Uchida- Kraepelin psycho-diagnostic test based on addition work, which is widely used in Japan, through a confirmatory factor analysis rotation. First, the brief description of the psycho-diagnostic test is made. Second, six kinds of the correlation measures to evaluate the addition work are proposed. The possibility to evaluate the personality traits, based on the Big Five, through these measures is discussed. Third, several confirmatory factor rotations are jointly applied to the combined data of both the Big Five and the proposed measures. The results are analyzed based on both the items and the scales Of the Big Five. An earlier report by Mecacci and Rocchetti showed a significant, weak, and positive correlation between Evening type as measured by the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire and Type A personality as measured by the Jenkins Activity Survey and the Bortner Type A Scale in Italian college students. The present study of 503 Japanese college students yielded a significant and weakly negative correlation. The bases for the different results were discussed in a psychophysiological context. This study examined the relationship between the sense of authenticity and affectivity, which is under the control of the cultural construal of the self. Japanese university students (N=287) rated themselves on the Sense of Authenticity Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and the Scale for Independent and Interdependent Construal of the Self. Analysis indicated that the Sense of Authenticity increased Positive Affect and decreased Negative Affect, regardless of the scores on Independent and Interdependent Self-construal. The effects of anger feelings (rated by the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory) and witnessing family violence on anxiety and depression (rated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) were examined in 457 junior high school students. Anxiety and depression scores were correlated with frequencies of witnessing family violence. In a regression analysis, however, after controlling for the demographic variables and depression score, the anxiety score was predicted by State Anger, Anger-Out, and Anger-Control; the depression score was predicted, after controlling for the demographic and anxiety score, by State Anger, Anger-In positively, and by Anger-Out and Anger-Control negatively. Witnessing family violence failed to add significant contribution in predicting anxiety or depression. These results were generally supported by structural equation modeling. The effects of witnessing family violence on dysphoric mood may be mediated by anger feelings. The style of dysphoric mood may be predicted by the style of anger expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined whether universality of the 5-factor model (FFM) of personality operationalized by the Revised NEO Personality Inventory is due to genetic influences that are invariant across diverse nations. Factor analyses were conducted on matrices of phenotypic, genetic, and environmental correlations estimated in a sample of 1,209 monozygotic and 701 dizygotic twin pairs from Canada, Germany, and Japan. Five genetic and environmental factors were extracted for each sample. High congruence coefficients were observed when phenotypic, genetic, and environmental factors were compared in each sample as well as when each factor was compared across samples. The Edwards Personal Preference Schedule was administered to open university students of various ages (95 men, 164 women). For both men and women, the scores on Order had positive correlation and those on Heterosexuality had negative correlation with age. Scores on Deference and Endurance had positive correlations for women. It is considered that the changes of these preferences by age would reflect social experiences accumulated over time. Background Although a number of studies have reported on the association between obsessional personality features as measured by the Munich Personality Test (MPT) “Rigidity” scale and depression, there has been no examination of these relationships in a non-clinical sample. Methods The dimensional scores on the MPT were compared between subjects with and without lifetime depression, using a sample of employed Japanese adults. The odds ratio for suffering from lifetime depression was estimated by multiple logistic regression analysis. To diagnose a lifetime history of depression, the Inventory to Diagnose Depression, Lifetime version (IDDL) was used. Results The subjects with lifetime depression scored significantly higher on the “Rigidity” scale than the subjects without lifetime depression. In our logistic regression analysis, three risk factors were identified as each independently increasing a person's risk for suffering from lifetime depression: higher levels of “Rigidity”, being of the female gender, and suffering from current depressive symptoms. A study was undertaken comparing the responses of schoolchildren (ages 10-15 years) in Japan (N = 1091) with those in England (N = 2320) on the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Factor analyses showed that identical factors could be found in both samples, corresponding to P (psychoticism), E (extraversion), N (neuroticism), and L (a Lie or dissimulation factor, also often interpreted as a factor measuring conformity). Several items in each factor showed a lack of correspondence in loading pattern between the countries and had to be substituted by others in order to obtain scales useful for measurement of personality in Japan. Reduced scales were also constructed from items having similar loading patterns for the two countries, and comparisons made between the two groups on these scales. Japanese children had very significantly higher P scores, but did not differ appreciably with respect to E, N, and L from English children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents an application of the California psychological inventory in a study of Japanese delinquency. As part of their interdisciplinary, cross-cultural research on delinquency, the authors have been concerned whether or not, despite cultural differences, there will be certain similarities in social attitudes that are related to delinquent activity by youth whether they occur in the American culture or in that of Japan. This specific report, one of several contemplated, is on results obtained by using the California Psychological Inventory (CPI). The socialization scale was empirically derived, but is nonetheless related to a social-interactional theory of delinquency. When examined item by item it comprises a number of social attitudes that are significantly selected or rejected by members of delinquent populations. The Japanese nondelinquent group consisted of 64 male students of a commercial high school in Tokyo, aged 17 and 18. These subjects were selected to approximate the socioeconomic background of a sample of 36- inmates selected from Kurihama Reformatory near Tokyo, Japan.

Aim: Peritonitis is a critical complication in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Patient characteristics, especially conscientiousness, potentially influence self-care activity. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the peritonitis risk and the patient conscientiousness., Methods: This retrospective observational study was conducted at three Japanese medical centres in 2018. Adult patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis were evaluated for conscientiousness with the Japanese version of the Ten-Item Personality Inventory. We followed the patients from peritoneal dialysis induction retrospectively on chart review. The primary outcome was time to first episode of peritonitis after initiation of peritoneal dialysis in the entire observation period. Hazard ratios were estimated using a Cox model adjusted for potential confounders., Results: Among 111 patients enrolled, 32 experienced peritonitis. The patients were divided into the more conscientious group (n = 64) and less conscientious group (n = 47) based on a mean conscientiousness score of 3.991. Additionally, less conscientious patients tended to be at higher risk for peritonitis during the entire study period (hazard ratio adjusted for age and sex, 1.99; 95% confidence interval, 0.98-4.03; p = .057). The increased risk in the less conscientious group was statistically significant in the first year (adjusted hazard ratio, 6.98; 95% confidence interval, 1.42-34.40; p = .017)., Conclusion: Less conscientious patients significantly have shorter peritonitis-free survival in the early phase after peritoneal dialysis induction although not significantly during the entire study period. Background: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) develops in the early teens and is a common disorder among university students. Understanding the predictive factors of SAD comorbid with major depressive episode (MDE) is important for student mental health care. The aim of this study was to identify the personality traits that predict SAD with MDE by analyzing longitudinal data of Japanese university students., Methods: In this retrospective study, Japanese university students who visited the health care center of Hokkaido University for the first time were divided into the following four groups: "Control" (n = 43), "MDE" (n = 16), "SAD" (n = 28), and "SAD with MDE" (n = 61) based on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, and core anxiety symptoms for SAD in the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview during screening. Predictors for SAD with MDE were identified by a four-group comparison of the Temperament and Character Inventory and PHQ-9 data previously obtained at the enrollment using analysis of variance and post-hoc tests., Results: Upon comparing the four groups using analysis of variance, there were significant differences in the baseline PHQ-9 summary score, Harm-Avoidance (HA), and Self-Directedness (SD). According to results of the post-hoc test, all three showed a significant difference between the "Control" and "SAD with MDE." Furthermore, there was a significant difference in HA scores between "SAD" and "Control." In all the groups, the mean time from enrollment to the first visit to the center was >2 years., Conclusion: A higher HA score at baseline is a predictor of SAD with or without MDE. The purpose of this study was to examine whether or not the feedback of the results of popular psychological tests influences human behavior, and to compare the strength of any influence with that of academic psychological tests. We conducted an experiment in which 64 female Japanese subjects took a popular or academic psychological test, and then interacted with a stranger. The subjects who took each test received bogus feedback implying that they were extroverted or introverted. The results showed that subjects who received the extroversion feedback were more interactive with a stranger than those who received the introversion feedback, irrespective of whether they had taken the popular or academic test. This suggests that the feedback of popular psychological tests, like that of academic tests, can influence human behavior and create a self-fulfilling prophecy. The results also showed that those subjects who took the popular psychological tests reported higher psychological well-being than those who took the academic tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the findings of a study on the development of a Japanese version of the Selection, Optimization, and Compensation (SOC) questionnaire using the Rasch model. To estimate the item functions of 12 items in each of the 4 subscales, 340 responses to the initial survey and 280 responses to the retest survey conducted 7 weeks later were obtained from Japanese older adults. Item fit information, item-total correlations, and stability of item difficulties were used to select the appropriate items in each subscale. Test-retest and internal consistency reliability were found to be optimal in all of the refined subscales. These subscales were related to internal control, subjective well-being, and personality traits, but not to social desirability. Thus, the psychometric properties of this Japanese SOC questionnaire were verified. This study also indicated the possibility of using the Rasch model to refine the SOC questionnaire in other cultural settings.

Background: Type A behavior pattern (TABP) has been regarded as a putative risk factor for coronary heart disease and recent studies from our group suggest that TABP individuals, identified via the Bortner scale whose validity had been confirmed by structured interviews, may have a greater tendency towards hyperthymic temperament, shorter sleep time and shorter snooze time. Since the Bortner scale was developed in USA and may reflect western culture, it is necessary to reconfirm our findings using a Japanese questionnaire such as Coronary-prone Type Scale for Japanese (CTS) and Kwansei Gakuin's daily life questionnaire (KG questionnaire)., Methods: Fifty healthy subjects were assessed for TABP using the Bortner scale, as well as the CTS and KG questionnaires. Hyperthymic temperament was assessed via the Japanese standardized version of the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-auto questionnaire (TEMPS-A), while sleep time and snooze time were measured by actigraphy., Results: Both CTS and KG questionnaire scores were significantly and positively associated with the Bortner scale scores. Although CTS and KG scores were significantly and positively associated with hyperthymic temperament scores, none were associated with sleep time or snooze time., Limitations: The number of subjects was relatively small., Conclusions: The findings suggest that Japanese questionnaires such as CTS and KG questionnaires are valid as measures of TABP. Moreover, the association between TABP and hyperthymic temperament was reconfirmed by both CTS and KG questionnaires, whereas the association between TABP and sleep pattern was not. Suicide attempt is a risk factor for suicide. To investigate trait impulsivity among suicide attempters, 93 attempters admitted to an emergency department and 113 healthy controls were evaluated using the Japanese version of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11J). Impulsivity was analyzed in relation to clinical data in the attempters. Total BIS-11J, attention impulsiveness, and motor impulsiveness scores were significantly higher in the attempters than in the controls. Both total BIS-11J and non-planning impulsiveness scores were significantly higher in attempters with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders among the diagnostic groups. Migraine is a multifactorial disease with various factors, such as genetic polymorphisms and personality traits, but the contribution of those factors is not clear. To clarify the pathogenesis of migraine, the contributions of genetic polymorphisms and personality traits were simultaneously investigated using multivariate analysis. Ninety-one migraine patients and 119 non-headache healthy volunteers were enrolled. The 12 gene polymorphisms analysis and NEO-FFI personality test were performed. At first, the univariate analysis was performed to extract the contributing factors to pathogenesis of migraine. We then extracted the factors that independently contributed to the pathogenesis of migraine using multivariate stepwise logistic regression analysis. Using the multivariate analysis, three gene polymorphisms including monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) T941G, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T, and tumor necrosis factor beta (TNF-β) G252Α, and the neuroticism and conscientiousness scores in NEO-FFI were selected as significant factors that independently contributed to the pathogenesis of migraine. Their odds ratios were 1.099 (per point of neuroticism score), 1.080 (per point of conscientiousness score), 2.272 (T and T/T or T/G vs G and G/G genotype of MAOA), 1.939 (C/T or T/T vs C/C genotype of MTHFR), and 2.748 (G/A or A/A vs G/G genotype of TNF-β), respectively. We suggested that multiple factors, such as gene polymorphisms and personality traits, contribute to the pathogenesis of migraine. The contribution of polymorphisms, such as MAOA T941G, MTHFR C677T, and TNF-β G252A, were more important than personality traits in the pathogenesis of migraine, a multifactorial disorder.

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle reflex (ASR) is the most common psychophysiological index of sensorimotor gating. Several studies have investigated the relationship of PPI of ASR to schizotypy in Caucasians. However, little has been reported on this relationship in Asians. We investigated a possible relationship between PPI of ASR and schizotypy in 79 healthy Japanese subjects. Schizotypy was assessed by the Schizotypal personality Questionnaire (SPQ). PPI was evaluated at signal-to-noise ratios (SnRs: difference between background noise intensity and prepulse intensity) of +12, +16, and +20 dB. The total SPQ score, cognitive/perceptual score, and interpersonal score correlated negatively with PPI at SnR of +16 and +20 dB. We conclude that PPI is associated with the trait of schizotypy in healthy Asian subjects.

There have been several studies showing the relationship between sex hormones and personality traits. Cytochrome P450 19 (CYP 19, aromatase) is the rate-limiting enzyme for the conversion of androgens into estrogens, and it has been reported that the C/T single nucleotide polymorphism in the 3'-untranslated region (3'UTR) of CYP19 gene (rs10046) affects dispositions of estradiol and testosterone. Therefore, it is hypothesized that this polymorphism affects personality traits. In the present study, the association of this polymorphism with personality traits was examined in 633 healthy Japanese subjects. Personality traits were assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), and the CYP19 genotype was detected by a PCR-RFLP method. In males, the group with the T allele predictive of elevated levels of estradiol and decreased levels of testosterone had lower scores of harm avoidance than that without the T allele (p=0.015). In females, none of the seven TCI dimensions was different between the two genotype groups. The present study thus suggests that the C/T polymorphism in the 3'UTR of CYP19 gene affects personality trait of harm avoidance in healthy males.

Dopamine transporter (DAT) plays a major role in terminating dopamine neurotransmission, which may be involved in the characterization of personality traits. Recently, polymorphisms of the promoter region (-67 A/T) and intron 8 (40-bp variable number of tandem repeats, VNTRs) in the DAT gene were reported to affect DAT expression. In the present study, we examined the associations of these polymorphisms with personality traits in 654 healthy Japanese. Personality traits were assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), and the DAT polymorphisms were identified by PCR-based methods. Regarding the -67 A/T promoter polymorphism, the females without the A allele predictive of high DAT activity had lower scores of self-directedness (p=0.005) and cooperativeness (p=0.038) than those with the A allele. In males, none of the TCI scores was different between the two genotype groups. The intron 8 VNTR polymorphism did not affect any TCI score either in males or in females. The present study thus suggests that the -67 A/T promoter polymorphism, but not intron 8 VNTR polymorphism, in the DAT gene affects personality traits of Japanese healthy females.

There have been several data suggesting that norepinephrine neurotransmission is involved in the characterization of personality traits. Recently, the -3081A/T polymorphism in the promoter region of the norepinephrine transporter (NET) gene affecting promoter activity has been reported. In the present study, we studied the association between this NET polymorphism and personality traits in 553 Japanese healthy subjects. Personality traits were assessed by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), and the NET genotypes were identified by a PCR-RFLP method. Multivariate two-factor analysis of covariance with genotype and gender as factors and with age as a covariate showed no association between the NET genotypes and the TCI dimension scores. The present study thus suggests that the -3081A/T polymorphism in the NET gene promoter is not involved in the characterization of personality traits in healthy subjects.

The aim of this study was to obtain information that would enable caregivers to provide the necessary psychological care for hemodialysis patients. A total of 608 hemodialysis patients completed the questionnaire of the Neuroticism, Extroversion, Openness-Five Factor Inventory and were subsequently classified by personality types using cluster analysis. In comparison to the norms for the general Japanese adult population, the four-dimensional average of extroversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness among hemodialysis patients was significantly lower (P < 0.001), especially for openness. The openness score correlated with each of the following: age (P < 0.001), employment (P < 0.01), and diabetes (P < 0.001). Four personality types were defined based on these dimensions. High scores for agreeableness, extroversion and conscientiousness characterized the agreeable type (22.6%). The patients in this type will likely accept their own experiences in a positive manner. Submissive types (22.0%) received the lowest scores for conscientiousness, though extroversion, openness, and agreeableness were also low. It is necessary to enhance a sense of independence and responsibility in patients with submissive type personalities. Sensitive types (21.5%) were characterized by the highest neuroticism scores and low scores for the other four dimensions. The patients in this type were likely to be persistent with changes in conditions. The last type was the balanced type (33.9%), which was defined by scores within mean range. In clinical practice, it is particularly important that the submissive and sensitive types should receive appropriate mental health care.

This study developed revised Japanese versions of the self-perception profile for Children, for Adolescents and for College Students. The original versions have an idiosyncratic and time-consuming item format, which was revised by using only one statement for each item. Subjects were fifth to sixth grade students (Boys=129, Girls= 152), tenth to twelfth grade students (Boys=112, Girls=100), and college students (Boys=96, Girls=153) in Japan. The reliability and validity measures showed that the revised versions were similar to the original versions. The present study provides some evidence for the use of these scales with Japanese students.

Clara cell secretory protein (CC16) is an anti-inflammatory protein expressed in the respiratory tract. Several studies have suggested the association between CC16 and mental disturbances, such as schizophrenia, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. In the present study, we investigated the association between the CC16 gene A38G polymorphism and personality traits in 214 healthy Japanese subjects. Personality traits were evaluated by using the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). As a result, no significant association was observed between the genotypes and the scores of the NEO PI-R or the STAI. The present results suggest that CC16 may not have a major role in the development of personality traits.

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders and depression. Corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor 2 (CRHR2) is one of the receptors that mediate CRH signal. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between the CRHR2 gene and personality traits, evaluated using the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R), in 243 healthy Japanese subjects. As a result, significant association was observed between the polymorphism in intron 2 (rs2267717) and Openness (P = 0.004, uncorrected, anova), while no relationship was observed concerning Neuroticism. The present result suggests an association between CRHR2 and the personality trait of Openness.

This study investigates the individual characteristics of Japanese polar team members. Four sets of measures from the Polar Psychology Project Battery have been used in Asuka Station. These measures are thought to reflect adjustment and well-being. Data have been collected during 3 consecutive years. The psychological profile of the subjects was relatively stable, and comparable to the standard means of Western sojourners. The results show the subjects were generally high in stress resistance. However, an increase in the Planning Orientation score and a decrease in the Hardiness score appear at the end of the wintering-over. These modifications correspond to psychological changes linked to the approaching end of wintering-over.

In order to examine the effects of personality and early life experiences on perceived social support, a total of 97 young Japanese women were investigated. Current interpersonal relationships were measured by an interview modified from Henderson et al.'s Interview Schedule for Social Interaction (ISSI). Personality was measured by Cloninger et al.'s Temperament and Character Inventory. Early life experiences at home and outside of home were also identified in the interview. The number of sources of perceived support was correlated with self-directness, while satisfaction with perceived support was correlated with novelty seeking and with low harm avoidance. No early life experiences--early loss of a parent, perceived parenting, childhood abuse experiences, experiences of being bullied and/or other life events--showed significant correlations with the number or satisfaction of supportive people. The quantity and quality of perception of social support differ in their link to personality, and perceived social support may, to some extent, be explainable in terms of personality.

In this study, we investigated the association between dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) exon III polymorphism and novelty seeking in 69 Japanese women. The group of subjects with long allele (> or =5 repeats) exhibited significantly elevated novelty seeking scores in comparison with subjects lacking the long allele. By contrast, the scores for harm avoidance, reward dependence, and persistence were statistically indistinguishable in the two group of subjects. With regard to the subscales of novelty seeking, the scores for exploratory excitability and extravagance were significantly higher in subjects with the long allele than in subjects lacking the long allele. However, no significant associations with impulsiveness or disorderliness were recognized. Our results suggest that although long alleles of the polymorphic exon III repeats are low in the Japanese population, there is an association between long alleles of DRD4 exon III polymorphism and novelty seeking.

Personality of targeted individuals can be assumed to influence behavior modification by health education. In this study the influence of personality on health consciousness was analyzed by a questionnaire for lifestyle, health consciousness, and the NEO-FFI personality test. Subjects were 942 new students in the Tokyo University of Agriculture who were surveyed in April, 1998. Separately performed health examination data were used to verify reliability of answers to the questionnaire. Among students, 83.2% of males and 90.4% of females felt themselves to be healthy, and more than 80% students desired to improve their health more. The rate of having no physical complaints, however, was only 31.7% in males and 20.4% in females. Distribution of NEO-FFI scores of neuroticism (N), extraversion (E), openness (O), agreeableness (A), and conscientiousness (C) corresponded well between males and females, except for significantly higher scores of O and A in females. Odds ratios (ORs) between high and low tertial points of NEO-FFI score for health consciousness were significantly elevated in the high scoring groups of E and C (OR = 6.26, 95% CI = 1.46-26.82, and OR = 6.04, 95% CI = 1.42-25.71, respectively) in males. On the contrary, high N and O groups had low health consciousness. Smoking habit was associated with high E scores (OR = 2.24, 95% CI = 1.13-4.43). Dietary habits, regular eating time, and avoidance of salty foods were associated with high C scores in both males and females. The OR of regular eating time was 2.66 (95% CI = 1.42-1.98), and 2.20 (95% CI = 1.31-3.71) for males and females, respectively. The OR of avoidance of salty foods were 2.09 (95% CI = 1.11-3.91), 1.87 (95% CI = 1.11-3.16) for males and females, respectively. Significant associations between lifestyle and personality require further study for risk association analysis and for relationship to interventive practices for prevention of lifestyle associated diseases.

This study was designed to assess the association between novelty seeking and D4DR gene polymorphism in the Japanese population. The 48 bp repeat polymorphism in the third exon of the dopamine D4 receptor gene of 153 normal female students was correlated with personality feature results from the Japanese version of Cloninger's Temperament and Character Inventory. The Novelty Seeking subscale of Exploratory Excitability had a significant association with long alleles of the polymorphic exon III repeat sequence of D4DR. Our results suggest that there is an association between long alleles of the polymorphic exon III repeat sequence of D4DR and the personality traits of the Novelty Seeking subscale of Exploratory Excitability, regardless of racial differences in the frequencies of D4DR exon III repeat polymorphism.

A statistical study was carried out to evaluate the dental caries of permanent teeth in the elementary school children (208 boys and 165 girls, 373 children of total) in the town of Fuji, Saga Prefectur, which is a mountain village, by means of psychological test and investigation of the living environment of children and their parents. The following results were obtained: 1. In analysis of the relationship between the increase of dental caries and personality characteristics, was shown a tendency toward a low degree of direct of correlation. However, in analysis of quantification type III, it was proven that personality characteristics that as dependency, regression, nervousness and emotional instability related to an increase in dental caries. 2. In the analysis of the relationship between living environments and personality characteristics, a tendency towards a low personality profile was recognized in the children with an increase of dental caries. 3. In pasticvcal, there was a distortion of the personality characteristics of slef-uncontrol and dependency. 4. In comparing the first half of the elementary school year with the last half, a difference in the living environment and personality characteristics was observed during the last half year. 5. The results obtained in this study indicated that early discovery of problems in the living environment and synthetic approach during the first half of the elementary school year were important for the prevention of dental caries of permanent teeth.

We hypothesized that children whose temperaments match the features, demands, and values of their environment will demonstrate a better fit or adjustment to that environment. Culture is one factor that influences the environment. This study examined the temperament ideal held by Japanese teachers (N = 18) as well as the relationship between judged temperament and the adjustment of children (N = 108) in kindergarten, first-, and second-grade Japanese classrooms. A questionnaire assessed a range of temperament for both ideal and actual judgments. Temperament ideals were consistent with previous sociological research. Good adjustment was significantly related to high task orientation, persistence, and flexibility, as well as to an approaching (as opposed to a withdrawing) style and a positive mood. The child who fit the cultural ideal of a "good child" was also perceived as better adjusted to the programs, and to the adults and peers in Japanese schools.

Measurement characteristics of screening measures (Rutter's teachers' and parents' questionnaires) were explored with some Japanese secondary school children. The characteristics included stability, cut-off points, factor analyses and agreements between questionnaire diagnoses and interviewer's judgement concerning types of disorder. These measures were used in combination and checked in terms of measurement characteristics. Age trends in the obtained results were described using 12-13-yr-old and 14-15-yr-old children. Results suggested that the cut-offs were age-dependent, regardless of the questionnaire type.

This is a study of the association of Type A behavior with the prevalence and 8-year incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) among 2187 Japanese men in the Honolulu Heart Program cohort. Type A behavior was determined by the Jenkins Activity Survey questionnaire in 1970. The prevalence rate of total CHD was significantly associated with Type A behavior, and this association was independent of other major risk factors in multivariate analyses. With the incidence data, however, there was no significant association of any clinical type of CHD with Type A behavior. Examination of the relationship of Type A behavior to other risk factors showed significant associations with serum cholesterol, obesity, physical inactivity, and alcohol consumption. Pathologic findings among 48 men who died showed no association of Type A behavior with microscopic evidence of myocardial infarction or with grades of atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries and aortas.
