Due to the strong nonlinearity and large torque ripple of switched reluctance motor, a cascaded fractional order PID sliding mode control system is designed. Considering the difficulty of parameter adjustment caused by the complexity of the system, the optimization technology using dung beetle optimizer is introduced to optimize the designed cascaded controller and control the speed and torque ripple. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed cascaded controller, a control model is built in MATLAB/Simulink, and compared with whale optimization algorithm, particle swarm optimization, sparrow search algorithm to verify the response effect of the cascaded controller. A cascaded double PID controller is also built for comparison to verify the effectiveness of fractional order PID sliding mode controller. The results show that the cascaded fractional order PID sliding mode controller optimized by dung beetle optimizer is better than another cascaded double PID controller, produces the minimum torque ripple, and has better speed response and stability. This paper is aimed at improve accuracy of angular position synchronization control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor driving system. Traditional PID controller could not meet requirement due to poor dynamic characteristics. The Global Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control (GFTSMC) has good ant‐disturbance ability, could make system more robust and realize synchronization control of angular position. But due to error in load torque observation, system state convergence error will be caused, which will reduce the accuracy of synchronization. In this paper, fractional‐order differentiation is used to replace the nonlinear part of GFTSMC, constructed Fractional Order Differentiation—GFTSMC (FOD‐GFTSMC) controller to improve accuracy of synchronization. Theoretical analysis will be used to demonstrate that this control strategy could improve convergence accuracy of system state, reduces error of synchronization, and some experiments will be carried out to verify that this kind of controller has high synchronization accuracy, fast dynamic response ability and strong robustness. © 2022 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Multi‐degree‐of‐freedom (multi‐DOF) spherical actuators have been developed for the fields of robotics and industrial machineries. We have proposed an outer rotor type three‐DOF spherical actuator that can realize a high torque density. Each coil input current is calculated using a torque generating equation based on the torque constant matrix. The permanent magnet type actuators have a problem with generating unexpected cogging torque due to various manufacturing errors. Manufacturing errors mainly mean differences between the ideal dimensions at the motor design stage and the actual dimensions in mass production. In this case, the actuator would exceed the limitations of classical proportional‐integral‐differential (PID) controllers. Therefore, we propose a current compensator using reinforcement learning by introducing a deep neural network that is expected to improve the robustness of spherical actuators. This current compensator was applied to uncertainty problems such as manufacturing fluctuations of cogging torque. We examined the reward, which is the main parameter of deep reinforcement learning, and reduced the control error compared to classical PID controller and simple neural network (NN) controller. © 2022 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. This paper addresses a design scheme of a proportional‐integral‐derivative (PID) controller with a new adaptive updating rule based on reinforcement learning (RL) approach for nonlinear systems. A new design scheme that RL can be used to complement the conventional PID control technology is presented. In the proposed scheme, a single radial basis function (RBF) network is considered to calculate the control policy function of Actor and the value function of Critic simultaneously. Regarding the PID controller structure, the inputs of RBF network are system errors, the difference of output as well as the second‐order difference of output, and they are composed of system states. The temporal difference (TD) error in the proposed scheme involves the reinforcement signal, the current and the previous stored value of the value function. The gradient descent method is adopted based on the TD error performance index, then, the updating rules can be yielded. Therefore, the network weights and the kernel function can be calculated in an adaptive way. Finally, the numerical simulations are conducted in nonlinear systems to illustrate the efficiency and robustness of the proposed scheme. © 2021 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Lots of process systems are affected by mutual interaction between inputs and outputs. Therefore, in designing a single‐input/single‐output (SISO) control system, it is often the case where the desired control performance cannot be obtained under the influence of inputs/outputs included in other loops. On the other hand, multi‐input/multi‐output (MIMO) control systems can be constructed for such systems, but the control systems design is often complicated. In this paper, we propose a new method for the synthesis of robust proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) control systems. The proposed method is based on the idea of partial model matching. The stability feeler, a tool for robust stability analysis, is used to stabilize closed‐loop systems with uncertainties. An advantage of the proposed method is that it guarantees robust stability of control systems. To clarify the effectiveness of the proposed method, two types of simulations are given. One is the case where the nominal plant is not stable. The other is the case where the plant is not robustly stable although the nominal plant is stable. The simulation results when the nominal plant is not stable show that the controller derived by the proposed method robustly stabilizes the closed‐loop system, whereas that derived by conventional partial model matching method cannot stabilize it. Moreover, when the plant is not robustly stable, it can be seen that the controller by the proposed method can robustly stabilize the system. Therefore, it is shown that the proposed method enables one to derive PID controllers robustly stabilizing closed‐loop systems. © 2019 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Abstract: In this age of globalization, the realization of production innovation and highly stable operation is the chief objective of the process industry in Japan. Obviously, modern advanced control plays an important role to achieve this target, but the key to success is the maximum utilization of PID control and conventional advanced control. This paper surveys how the three central pillars of process control – PID control, conventional advanced control, and linear/nonlinear model predictive control – have been used and how they have contributed toward increasing productivity. In addition to introducing eminently practical methods, emerging methods, and their applications, the authors point out challenging problems. In Japan, industry and academia are working in close cooperation to share their important problems and develop new technologies for solving them. Several methods introduced in this paper are results of such industry–academia collaboration among engineers and researchers in various companies and universities. Furthermore, soft-sensor or virtual sensor design is treated with emphasis on its maintenance, because soft-sensors must cope with changes in process characteristics for their continuous utilization. Maintenance is a key issue not only for soft-sensors but also for controllers. Finally, we will expand our scope and briefly introduce recent activities in tracking simulation and alarm management. A part of the results of our recent questionnaire survey of process control are also introduced; the results are extremely helpful in clarifying the state of the art in chemical process control in Japan. This paper addresses a robust decentralized proportional-integral (P1) control design for power system load- frequency regulation with communication delays. In the proposed methodology, the P1-based load-frequency control (LFC) problem is reduced to a static output feedback control synthesis for a multiple-delay system. The proposed control method gives a suboptimal solution using a developed iterative linear matrix inequalities algorithm via the mixed H2 /H∞ control technique. The control strategy is suitable for LFC applications that usually employ the PI control. Recently there have been many methods for rate control methods as applications of control theory. This paper considers congestion control in an ER system of ABR class in ATM as an example, and proposes a PID-type control rule under the existence of propagation delay. In the ATM switch, we predict the buffer level after time which equals the propagation delay elapsed. Based on the difference between the predicted and target values, a QoS value is calculated. It is stored in the ER field of an RM cell, and sent to each source. The connection sets the transfer rate corresponding to the extent of satisfaction and the QoS service class.
