Introduction: Dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) present both health and economic challenges on a global scale, thus affecting millions of people, and is projected to increase significantly by the year 2050. Early language processing deficits are evident in those diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and MCI. Recent advances in pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, including cognitive rehabilitation and training, show promising effects on cognitive functions. Articulation training, particularly, is highlighted for its potential in addressing the communication difficulties which those experiencing dementia and MCI face, based on the transmission deficit hypothesis. This study aimed to perform a voxel-wise comparison of morphological changes in grey matter volume as well as white matter integrity to represent the plastic changes in response to articulation training among older, healthy Japanese adults., Methods: Forty older, healthy Japanese adults were randomized into either a cognitive training group or a control group. The study involved comprehensive behavioral assessments, neuroimaging (including 3D anatomy, fMRI and Diffusion Tensor Imaging), and a structured verbal articulation training regimen. The training included reading tasks which focused on enhancing both articulation and phonological skills. Neuroimaging data were acquired using a 3 Tesla Siemens MR scanner, with the FSL tool being used for white matter analysis and the CAT12 toolbox for grey matter analysis., Results: Significant increases in grey matter volume were observed in certain regions, including the left Supplementary motor area, Postcentral gyrus, and bilateral Superior frontal gyrus among those in the training group. Correlations were noted between reading abilities and cortical volume in areas such as the left Middle temporal gyrus, pulvinar, and Middle occipital gyrus. White matter integrity also improved, as evidenced by increased fractional anisotropy in tracts such as the superior longitudinal fasciculus, corona radiata, and internal capsule. These findings suggest a link between articulation training and enhanced neuroplasticity in both grey and white matter regions related to language processing., Conclusion: The study demonstrates that a 4-week verbal articulation training intervention period can lead to significant improvements in grey matter volume in the left Supplementary motor area, the left Postcentral gyrus, and the bilateral Superior frontal gyrus, as well as the integrity of white matter tracts associated with language processing among older adults. Background: Mapping disease rates is an important aspect of epidemiological research because it helps inform public health policy. Disease maps are often drawn according to local administrative areas (LAAs), such as counties, cities, or towns. In LAAs with small populations, disease rates are unstable and are prone to appear extremely high or low. The empirical Bayes methods consider variance differences among different LAAs, thereby stabilizing the disease rates. The methods of kriging break the constraints of geopolitical boundaries and produce a smooth curved surface in the form of contour lines, but the methods lack the stabilizing effect of the empirical Bayes methods., Methods: An easy-to-implement stabilized kriging method is proposed to map disease rates, which allows different errors in different LAAs., Results: Monte Carlo simulations revealed that the stabilized kriging method had smaller symmetric mean absolute percentage error than three other types of methods (the original LAA-based method, empirical Bayes methods, and traditional kriging methods) in nearly all scenarios considered. Real-world data analysis of oral cancer incidence rates in men from Taiwan demonstrated that the age-standardized rates in the central mountainous sparsely-populated region of Taiwan were stabilized using our proposed method, with no more large differences in numerical values, whereas the rates in other populous regions were not over-smoothed. Additionally, the stabilized kriging map had improved resolution and helped locate several hot and cold spots in the incidence rates of oral cancer., Conclusion: We recommend the use of the stabilized kriging method for mapping disease rates.

Elucidating fishing effects on fish population dynamics is a critical step toward sustainable fisheries management. Despite previous studies that have suggested age or size truncation in exploited fish populations, other aspects of fishing effects on population demography, e.g., via altering life histories and density, have received less attention. Here, we investigated the fishing effects altering adult demography via shifting reproductive trade-offs in the iconic, overexploited, Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis. We found that, contrary to our expectation, mean lengths of catch increased over time in longline fisheries. On the other hand, mean catch lengths for purse seine fisheries did not show such increasing trends. We hypothesized that the size-dependent energetic cost of the spawning migration and elevated fishing mortality on the spawning grounds potentially drive size-dependent skipped spawning for adult tuna, mediating the observed changes in the catch lengths. Using eco-genetic individual-based modeling, we demonstrated that fishing-induced evolution of skipped spawning and size truncation interacted to shape the observed temporal changes in mean catch lengths for tuna. Skipped spawning of the small adults led to increased mean catch lengths for the longline fisheries, while truncation of small adults by the purse seines could offset such a pattern. Our results highlight the eco-evolutionary dynamics of fishing effects on population demography and caution against using demographic traits as a basis for fisheries management of the Pacific bluefin tuna as well as other migratory species., (© 2016 by the Ecological Society of America.)

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is now a global health problem. One important strategy to prevent and manage CKD is to offer a prevention program which could detect CKD early as well as raise awareness of the disease. In Shanghai, a community-based study demonstrated that the prevalence of CKD was high while awareness was low. The results from Shanghai urged the necessity of a screening and prevention program of CKD. In Japan, the urinalysis screening system was established to early diagnose and prevent CKD. Due to modification of lifestyle and prevalence of diabetes, urine dip-stick test for microalbuminuria might be necessary in adults while screening for proteinuria and haematuria are necessary for students and young adults. In Taiwan, two CKD programs - a CKD care program and diabetic share care program - were initiated. The cost-effectiveness study indicated that both programs could reduce end-stage renal disease (ESRD) burden in Taiwan because integrated pre-ESRD care was important for patients with CKD stage 4 and stage 5 while a diabetic shared care program was cost-effective to prevent nephropathy to patients with diabetic mellitus. In Australia, studies demonstrated that screening of high-risk individuals as well as promoting awareness were cost-effective to early detection of CKD. Furthermore, opportunistic screening with emphasis on early detection was effective in CKD prevention. The studies from those regions share experiences on early prevention and management of CKD.

Psychological maladjustment and its relation to academic achievement, parental expectations, and parental satisfaction were studied in a cross-national sample of 1,386 American, 1,633 Chinese, and 1,247 Japanese eleventh-grade students. 5 indices of maladjustment included measures of stress, depressed mood, academic anxiety, aggression, and somatic complaints. Asian students reported higher levels of parental expectation and lower levels of parental satisfaction concerning academic achievement than their American peers. Nevertheless, Japanese students reported less stress, depressed mood, aggression, academic anxiety, and fewer somatic complaints than did American students. Chinese students reported less stress, academic anxiety, and aggressive feelings than their American counterparts, but did report higher frequencies of depressed mood and somatic complaints. High academic achievement as assessed by a test of mathematics was generally not associated with psychological maladjustment. The only exception was in the United States, where high achievers indicated more frequent feelings of stress than did low achievers.

Chinese, Japanese, and American children at grades 1 and 5 were given a battery of 10 cognitive tasks and tests of achievement in reading and mathematics. Samples consisted of 240 children in each grade in each culture. 2 major purposes of the study were to determine possible differences in cognitive abilities of Japanese, Chinese, and American children and to investigate the possible differential relation of scores on cognitive tasks to reading by children of the 3 cultures. Similarity was found among children of the 3 cultures in level, variability, and structure of cognitive abilities. Chinese children surpassed Japanese and American children in reading scores; both Chinese and Japanese children obtained higher scores in mathematics than the American children. Prediction of achievement scores from the cognitive tasks showed few differential effects among children of the 3 cultures. The results suggest that the high achievement of Chinese and Japanese children cannot be attributed to higher intellectual abilities, but must be related to their experiences at home and at school.
