Chuanxiong (CX, Ligusticum chuanxiong), Japanese Chuanxiong (JCX, Cnidium officinale), Fuxiong (FX, Ligusticum sinense 'Fuxiong'), and Jinxiong (JX, Ligusticum sinense 'Jinxiong') are aromatic herbs used in China, Japan, and other regions. Their morphology and aromatic odor are similar, resulting in confused and mixed uses. This study compares the volatile compositions of these herbs for defining their medical uses. Headspace solid-phase microextraction–gas chromatography–triple quadrupole–mass spectrometry was employed to separate, identify, and quantify the compounds in the volatile gas of the four herbs. A total of 128 volatile compounds were identified and quantified in 23 these herbal samples. The sums of 106, 115, 116, and 120 compounds were detected in the volatile gas of CX, JCX, FX, and JX, with the mean contents of 4.80, 7.12, 7.67, and 12.0 μg/g, respectively. Types and contents of the main compounds were found to be different in the volatile gas of these herbs. The orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis showed the four herbs located in different confined areas or clusters. It is concluded that the volatile compositions in the four herbs are generally similar, but the contents of main volatile compounds are different. Rice blast is one of the most devastating diseases that threatens rice production in Taiwan. A rice blast forecasting model is required to guide the precise application of fungicide. Therefore, BlastGRU-TW model based on deep learning algorithms was developed in this study. The input data comprised approximately 1000 rice blast surveys, collected from 50 fields throughout Taiwan between 2014 and 2021, and the corresponding weather data retrieved from weather observation network in Taiwan. Common and easily accessible meteorological factors, i.e. temperature, humidity, precipitation, and wind, were converted into 20 daily meteorological features which were coupled with different time intervals between 1 and 30 days before survey (DBS) to train the model. The results showed that seven meteorological features (daily maximum temperature, daily mean temperature, daily minimum temperature, daily mean humidity, daily mean WV and daily mean Wu) and the interval from −4 to −24 DBS were informative in disease prediction, thereby indicating that the proposed model could predict the risk of rice blast by using meteorological data 4–24 days before new disease symptoms appeared. The proposed BlastGRU-TW model achieved an accuracy of 87.3%. Furthermore, on adding the 3 day forecast weather data from Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in the proposed model, the forecast extended to 7 days ahead of the appearance of new symptoms. Moreover, the BLASTAM model developed in Japan was implemented and validated in Taiwan to evaluate its applicability in different geographical areas. Discriminating natural and anthropogenic forcing on hydroclimatic changes is of fundamental importance for projecting future precipitation distribution under the warming climate. A sediment core (ON12C) obtained from Lake Onuma is used to study the evolution of precipitation in Northern Japan. The age-depth model for the core is based on three identified tephra layers, combined with accelerator mass spectrometry 14 C measurements of plant remnants, 137 Cs dating, and lithology. Multi-proxy records, including pollen concentration, Alnus pollen percentages and C/N atomic ratios, indicate that the δ 15 N record reflects nitrogen availability in the catchment where precipitation may exert a significant impact. The δ 15 N record shows that the precipitation was gradually increasing from 1640 AD, reaching peak strength in the middle of the 19th century, followed by a dry interval during the 20th century. The reconstructed variability in the precipitation from Lake Onuma is supported by other precipitation records from the Asian monsoon region. Solar irradiance is likely responsible for the changes in the summer monsoon precipitation on the centennial timescales during the late Little Ice Age, and the winter monsoon may also have played an important role in snow precipitation. The anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) is a promising technology for not only water reclamation but also virus removal; however, the virus removal efficiency of AnMBR has not been fully investigated. Additionally, the removal efficiency estimation requires datasets of virus concentration in influent and effluent, but its monitoring is not easy to perform for practical operation because the virus quantification process is generally time-consuming and requires specialized equipment and trained personnel. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify the key, monitorable variables in AnMBR and establish the data-driven models using the selected variables to predict virus removal efficiency. We monitored operational and environmental conditions of AnMBR in Sendai, Japan and measured virus concentration once a week for six months. Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed that the pH values of influent and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) were strongly correlated with the log reduction value of pepper mild mottle virus, indicating that electrostatic interactions played a dominant role in AnMBR virus removal. Among the candidate models, the random forest model using selected variables including influent and MLSS pH outperformed the others. The aging of a population structure is an inevitable path of demographic transition, as an inescapable result of decline in fertility rate and extension in life expectancy. Although demographic transition occurred earlier in Japan than in China, the two countries had similar patterns, both of which took a much shorter period of time than Western countries to complete demographic transition, as well as have been aging at a rapid speed that has rarely been seen in the world. Japan has the highest level of population aging in the world, and China has been experiencing a very fast pace of the population aging process and has the largest older population. Drawing upon data from World Population Prospects (2019), this paper compares changes in population aging in both China and Japan. Findings show that Japan's aging process is 30 years ahead of China, but China has been changing in a similar way as Japan. To be specific, both countries experienced four phases of the population aging process: accelerated development period, rapid development period, slow down period and high-level maintained period. In addition, both countries had a quick growing rate of population aging. It will take China 23 years and 10 years respectively for the aging rate increasing from 7% to 14% and then to 20%, while Japan took 24 and 11 years respectively, which is much shorter than developed countries in the West. Furthermore, China has a faster pace than Japan in population aging in the next 25 years. We found that from 2019-2044, China's aging rate, elderly dependency ratio, oldest-old coefficient and median age of population will increase 13.24 percent points, 24.21 percent points, 8.33 percent points, and 8.47 years, while the four indicators of Japan will increase 8.38 percent points, 22.52 percent points, 8.29 percent points, and 6.20 years, respectively.
