Necrotic lesions were found on the leaves and stems of Japanese white oak (Quercus myrsinifolia) seedlings on a nature trail in Japan. A species of Phytophthora was isolated from the necrotic lesions and adjacent soil. Molecular phylogenetic analysis and morphological examination revealed it to be Phytophthora castaneae, known as a causal pathogen of trunk rot on chestnuts. Pathogenicity testing showed that P. castaneae caused leaf blight on previously healthy Japanese white oak seedlings. In addition, using a soil infestation method, we confirmed that it was also pathogenic to chestnut seedlings, but the roots of Japanese white oak were not infected. Cryphonectria carpinicola is an ascomycetous fungus that has been regularly found in its asexual form on European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) in Europe over the past two decades. Here we describe the discovery of C. carpinicola in Japan and report for the first time its sexual state on Carpinus species. No symptomatic trees were observed, but stromata were found saprotrophically on broken branches of Carpinus species on the forest floor. The sexual structures of C. carpinicola resembled that of other Cryphonectria species and strongly resembled those of the closely related species C. radicalis. A phylogenetic tree based on the internal transcribed spacer sequences showed monophyly for the Japanese and European isolates of C. carpinicola. Further studies on the distribution and host range of C. carpinicola in Japan and on the life history strategies of this fungus are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Castanea crenata (Fagaceae) is a species of chestnut tree that is endemic to the Republic of Korea and Japan. While its kernels are consumed, chestnut by-products such as shells and burs, which account for 10–15% of the total weight, are discarded as waste. Phytochemical and biological studies have been carried out to eliminate this waste and develop high-value products from its by-products. In this study, five new compounds (1–2, 6–8) along with seven known compounds were isolated from the shell of C. crenata. This is the first study to report diterpenes from the shell of C. crenata. Comprehensive spectroscopic data including 1D, 2D NMR, and CD spectroscopy were used to determine the compound structures. All isolated compounds were examined for their ability to stimulate dermal papilla cell proliferation using a CCK-8 assay. In particular, 6β,7β,16α,17-Tetrahydroxy-ent-kauranoic acid, isopentyl-α-L-arabinofuranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside, and ellagic acid exhibited the most potent proliferation activity of all. Simple Summary: Fumigation is the most effective method for the control of Curculio sikkimensis in chestnuts. The effects of ethyl formate (EF) as a fumigant were investigated to evaluate its potential for practical use by farmers. A dose of 180.0 g/m3 and 12 h of fumigation resulted in 100% mortality on a small scale (2 m3). The results of these experiments indicate that EF could be conveniently used as a fumigant by farmers. Castanea crenata Siebold & Zucc. (Fagales: Fagaceae), a species of chestnut native to Korea and Japan, is distributed in Korea, Japan, and northeastern China, where chestnuts are a major economic agroforest product. Curculio spp. is among the main known pests of chestnuts around the world. In Korea, only phosphine (PH3) is permitted for the fumigation of C. sikkimensis larva-infested chestnuts. However, it is applied for large-scale fumigation, and its use is restricted. Moreover, it requires a long exposure time and an application device; thus, it cannot be used by small-scale farmers. In this study, the activity of ethyl formate (EF) as a fumigant against Curculio sikkimensis in chestnuts was investigated, and its potential for practical use by farmers was evaluated. The sorption of EF according to the filling ratio (FR) and fumigation time was tested, and the results revealed that 2.5% FR was the most effective. For C. sikkimensis in chestnuts, the mortality rate increased proportionately with the dose of EF. After exposure to 160 g/m3 of EF in a 12 L desiccator, the adult C. sikkimensis showed 100% mortality. According to the time–dose mortality data collected over 12 h of fumigation, the LCT90 and LCT99 values were estimated as 1052.0 and 1952.0 g·h/m3. The results revealed that immersion was not an effective method for controlling C. sikkimensis. According to the LCT values, a dose of 180.0 g/m3 and 12 h of fumigation resulted in 100% mortality on a small scale (2 m3). The Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima Bl.) was introduced into Japan about 100 years ago. Since then, a number of Chinese chestnut cultivars and Japanese–Chinese hybrid cultivars have been selected by farmers and plant breeders, but little information has been available about their origins and genetic relationships. A classification based on simple sequence repeat markers was conducted using 230 cultivars including Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc.) cultivars originated in Japan, Japanese–Chinese hybrid cultivars, and Chinese chestnut cultivars originated in both Japan and China. First, a search for synonyms (cultivars with identical genotypes) revealed 23 synonym groups among the Chinese chestnut cultivars, and all but one cultivar from each synonym group was omitted from further analyses. Second, genetic structure analysis showed a clear division between Japanese and Chinese chestnut, and most of the Japanese and Chinese cultivars had a simple genetic structure corresponding to the expected species. On the other hand, most Japanese–Chinese hybrid cultivars had admixed genetic structure. Through a combination of parentage and chloroplast haplotype analyses, 16 of the 18 hybrid cultivars in this study were inferred to have parent–offspring relationships with other cultivars originated in Japan. Finally, Bayesian clustering and chloroplast haplotype analysis showed that the 116 Chinese chestnut cultivars could be divided into two groups: one originated in the Hebei region of China and the other originated in the Jiangsu and Anhui regions of China. The Chinese chestnut cultivars selected in Japan showed various patterns of genetic structure including Hebei origin, Jiangsu or Anhui origin, and admixed. Torymus sinensis Kamijo was released into Europe to control the Asian chestnut gall wasp Dryocosmus kuriphilus Yasumatsu, proving to be an effective biocontrol agent.In Japan, hybrids between this exotic parasitoid and the native congeneric Torymus beneficus Yasumatsu and Kamijo have been recorded, whereas no case of hybridization with natives has been reported for Europe.The seasonal phenology of the Torymus species was investigated in north‐west Italy and 172 997 chestnut galls (Castanea spp.), 7866 oak galls (Quercus spp.), 29 wild rose galls (Rosa spp.) and 44 bramble galls (Rubus spp.) were collected over a 5‐year period.The seasonal flight activity was recorded for eight native Torymus species [Torymus affinis (Fonscolombe), Torymus auratus (Müller), Torymus bedeguaris (L.), Torymus calcaratus Nees, Torymus cyaneus Walker, Torymus flavipes (Walker), Torymus geranii (Walker) and Torymus notatus (Walker)] and five of them were found to overlap with T. sinensis flight, namely T. affinis, T. auratus, T. flavipes, T. geranii and T. notatus.Among the Torymus native species, T. notatus revealed to be morphologically and phylogenetically closely related to T. sinensis, thus suggesting hybridization potential. Abstract Trapa natans , characterized by four-horned fruits, has been recognized as an introduced species in the northeastern United States since the 1920′s. However, in 2014 a two-horned morphotype of Trapa was discovered in the Potomac River in Virginia. As such, we hypothesize the two-horned variety represents a cryptic introduction of a Trapa taxon distinct from the four-horned T. natans previously identified in North America. We tested this hypothesis by genotyping 129 amplified fragment length polymorphism loci for 304 Trapa individuals collected from across the Northeast US and several populations from Asia and Africa. The two-horned and four-horned morphotypes in the northeastern US were found to be genetically and morphologically distinct. The two-horned Trapa taxon was most genetically and morphologically similar to samples from Taiwan identified as T. bispinosa Roxb. var iinumai Nakano. The four-horned Trapa taxon previously identified as T. natans was most genetically and morphologically similar to T. natans collected from Japan, but were genetically distinct. Therefore, it is likely that the US four-horned Trapa was introduced from somewhere outside of Japan, an unsampled area in Japan, or have genetically diverged since introduction. Distinguishing these two US Trapa taxa will be important for documenting spread and identifying new populations, and for further study on the timing and efficacy of physical, chemical, and biological control options. The family Blechnaceae is a moderately sized leptosporangiate fern lineage, with 24 genera and around 250 species. Struthiopteris accommodates small to medium‐sized, dimorphic, pinnate species. It is composed of six northern species: S. spicant is distributed in western parts of Europe and North America; S. fallax is endemic to Iceland; S. niponica, S. amabilis and S. castanea are endemic to Japan, and S. hancockii occurs in Japan and Taiwan. Due to the lack of a global review and to its highly interesting geographical distribution, this genus merits further study to clarify its taxonomy, species relationships, and distributional pattern. The present study aims to achieve the following goals: (a) identify and describe morphological characters supporting the taxonomy of Struthiopteris; (b) reconstruct a complete phylogeny for the genus; (c) study the biogeographical history of Struthiopteris at a global scale. The morphological study involved the observation of characters ranging from rhizome scales to spores over 164 individuals. Phylogenies were constructed applying ML and BI techniques over 51 newly produced sequences of three chloroplast markers (rbcL, trnL‐trnF, psbA‐trnH), using the species Blechnidium melanopus and Brainea insignis as closest relatives. For the molecular dating and historical biogeography analyses, we estimated and compared ancestral ranges under several models. Most of the morphological characters led us to discern two groups of species: the S. spicant group (S. spicant, S. fallax, and S. castanea) and the S. niponica group (the remaining species). In our molecular phylogeny, the supposed sister genus Blechnidium always appeared as nested within Struthiopteris, rendering this genus non‐monophyletic. The two groups identified by the morphology appeared as monophyletic clades within Struthiopteris, with the clade S. spicant more closely related to Blechnidium than to the clade S. niponica. For all these reasons, we propose to rescue the now‐disused genus Spicantopsis for the species belonging to the S. niponica group: indeed, this genus was created c. 100 years ago to reunite the same species S. amabilis, S. niponica, and S. hancockii. Our results suggest that all members of this group of genera (Blechnidium, Struthiopteris, Spicantopsis) emerged in East Asia about 85 mya, at a time when Japan was still part of the mainland. It appears that, for most of their history, the members of these genera have been confined to East Asia, with one dispersal to the Americas by an ancestor within Struthiopteris s.str., and additional dispersals to India and the Philippines by Blechnidium melanopus. Two new species of Dryocosmus (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Cynipini), D. sefuriensis Ide, Wachi et Abe, sp. nov. and D. sakureierisis Ide, Wachi et Abe, sp. nov., are described from Japan. A key to species of Dryocosmus in East Asia is given. Although the members of Dryocosmus have been known to induce galls on the subgenus Quercus of the genus Quercus and the genera Castanea, Castanopsis, Chrysolepis, and Lithocarpus of Fagaceae, this is the first record of this gall wasp genus from the strictly Asian subgenus Cyclobalanopsis of the genus Quercus. The discovery of two new species of Dryocosmus associated with Q. (C.) acuta suggests the exceptionally diverse host range of Dryocosmus and the species richness of Cynipini on this plant subgenus in Asia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: I did the food habits of the Asiatic black bear Ursus thibetanus from 1013 fecal samples collected between 1999 and 2005 in the Misaka Mountains on the Pacific coast of central Japan. The food habits of the bears showed clear seasonal changes, and I classified the food resources of the bears into three types. Staple foods were green vegetation in spring, soft mast (Prunus spp.) and insects in summer, and hard mast (Quercus spp.) in autumn. Alternative foods were green vegetation and other soft mast (Rubus spp.) in summer and Japanese chestnuts Castanea crenata and vine fruits in autumn. Foods of opportunity were hard mast (Quercus spp.) that had been shed in the previous autumn and were found in spring and other fruits in autumn. Seasonal food habits showed yearly variations: bears used alternative foods and foods of opportunity in response to the yearly variation in staple food amount, but the magnitude of variability of food habits differed among seasons, with large variability in autumn and small variability in summer and spring. The primary influence on the yearly variation in food habit is presumably the fluctuation in fruit production among years. Summer is probably the most difficult season in terms of the bear''s food supply, because the number of fruiting species is limited and staple foods such as new green vegetation and fruits are less available. Long-term studies of the availability of the main food items and food habits of bears will be critical for further understanding these animals’ feeding ecology and for determining the factors that influence their behavior. Mistaken ideas about the naturalness of past and present landscapes are widespread in diverse cultures and in the scientific literature, and many of these ideas are only now being seriously challenged by current research (e.g., Erickson 2006; Fairhead and Leach 1996; Hall 1998; Ramankutty and Foley 1999; Willis et al. 2004). For example, the chestnut, Castanea crenata, has long been an important tree in Japanese culture, which has been cultivated, among other things, for its much loved edible nut and its valuable timber. Today, the widely-held view in Japan, which also appears in the scholarly and popular literature, is that in the past Castanea stands covered a large area throughout Japan, and these stands only disappeared because of economic development, especially in association with railway construction. Otaru, Hokkaido, is one of the places where people believe Castanea stands covered a large area and were deforested only recently. Local people in Otaru believe that the stand in Temiya Park has existed since the Jomon Period. For a more accurate historical perspective on Japanese forestation, we have performed pollen analysis to clarify the timing of the introduction of the Castanea tree into Otaru region and to reveal the history of this specific Castanea stand in Temiya Park. The results indicate that Castanea was first found in Otaru region 7100 B.P., but that it was not cultivated extensively until recently. Based on our study, and on data from this area dating to the late 19th century, we concluded instead that the Castanea stand we studied in Temiya Park, Otaru, was established after the mid-20th century. Abstract: Castanea and Aesculus trees were protected for consumption of nuts as food during the Jomon Period. Climatic factors affected the selection of kinds of consumed nuts. Castanea was mainly consumed during warm periods and Aesculus was consumed during cold periods. However, this could have been a regional phenomenon in northern Japan. It is possible that in southern warmer areas Castanea either might be protected constantly, or the protection of these plants was not necessary because forest productivity in the southern area is greater than that of the northern area. To understand the influence of temperature on Castanea hansaibai, pollen analysis was conducted at the Satohama site. In addition, the distribution of the intermediate stage between wild and domestication (hansaibai) during the Jomon Period was studied based on pollen analyses. At the Satohama site, protection of Castanea started during the warm period in the Early Jomon Period (7000–4500yearsBP) and continued to be observed during the next cold period. The Tohoku region (the northern part of Honshu Island) and the Hokuriku region (Japan Sea Coast area in Central Japan) was the main distribution area. In this study, no evidence of the protection of either species in Western Japan was detected. Abstract: We surveyed native populations of the chestnut blight fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica, in Japan and China, and C. nitschkei, a sympatric species on chestnut trees in Japan, to learn more about the diversity of hypoviruses and other double-stranded (ds) RNA viruses. In a sample of 472 isolates of C. parasitica and 45 isolates of C. nitschkei from six prefectures in Japan, we found 27 containing one or more dsRNAs. Twelve isolates of C. parasitica and two isolates of C. nitschkei were infected with Cryphonectria hypovirus 1 (CHV-1); four of these 12 C. parasitica isolates also contained other dsRNAs that did not hybridize to CHV-1. In China, only one of 85 C. parasitica isolates was CHV-1-infected; no dsRNAs were detected in the other isolates from China. No other known hypoviruses were found in this study. However, we found two previously undescribed dsRNAs in Japan approximately 9kb in size that did not hybridize to each other or to any known dsRNAs from C. parasitica. We also found three additional groups of dsRNAs, one of which represents the genome of a new member of the virus family Chrysoviridae and was found only in C. nitschkei; the other two dsRNAs were found previously in isolates of C. parasitica from Japan or China. The most significant result of this survey is the discovery of novel dsRNAs that can be characterized in future research. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
