Purpose: Our study aimed to make a bibliometric analysis on Sjögren's syndrome-related dry eye disease (SS-DED), explore its potential research hotspots, and provide critical information for future research interest and undeveloped topics in this field, which can benefit clinicians and researchers., Methods: We extracted all publications relating to SS-DED from 2003 to 2022 from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Original articles and reviews in English were included. The contributions of different countries, institutions, journals, and authors were compared, and the research hotspots were visualized for network analysis through GraphPad Prism, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer., Results: We enrolled a total of 987 publications. The United States contributed the most publications (281, 28.5%), followed by China (157, 15.9%) and Japan (80, 8.11%). Publications from the United States were cited more frequently (13,060 citations), with the highest H-index of 57. China ranked second in the total number of publications, the papers were not cited frequently (3790 citations), and the H-index ranked second (H-index = 31). PLoS One (32, 3.24%) published the most papers, and the University of California system had the highest number of publications (45, 4.56%). Bootsma H from the Netherlands published the most papers. The trend of research hotspots evolved mainly from the basic manifestation to pathogenesis and treatment of SS-DED and paid more attention to distinguishing SS-DED from that dry eye disease without SS., Conclusions: Based on the bibliometric, co-citation, and network analyses in this study, we obtained the annual publications and citations, the growth trends of publications, the productivity of countries, organizations, journals, and authors, high-quality publications, and the emerging hotspots of SS-DED, which may open new doors for promising research directions., (© 2023. Purpose: To determine eye drop type and usage frequency and investigate risk factors for no eye drop use in individuals with symptomatic dry eye (DE) in Japan. Study design: Crowdsourced observational study. Methods: This study was conducted using the DryEyeRhythm smartphone application between November 2016 and September 2019. Data collected included the type and frequency of eye drop use, demographics, medical history, lifestyle, and self-reported symptoms. Symptomatic DE was defined as an Ocular Surface Disease Index total score of ≥ 13. Risk factors for no eye drop use were identified using multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results: Among 2619 individuals with symptomatic DE, 1876 did not use eye drops. The most common eye drop type was artificial tears (53.4%), followed by hyaluronic acid 0.1% (33.1%) and diquafosol sodium 3% (18.7%). Risk factors (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]) for no eye drop use were age (0.97 [0.97–0.98]), body mass index (1.04 [1.01–1.07]), brain disease (0.38 [0.15–0.98]), collagen disease (0.30 [0.13–0.68]), mental illness other than depression and schizophrenia (0.65 [0.45–0.93]), cataract surgery (0.12 [0.02–0.59]), ophthalmic surgery other than cataract and laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (0.55 [0.34–0.88]), current (0.47 [0.38–0.57]) or past (0.58 [0.43–0.77]) contact lens use, >8 h screen exposure time (1.38 [1.05–1.81]), <6 h (1.24 [1.01–1.52]) and >9 h (1.34 [1.04–1.72]) sleep time, and water intake (0.97 [0.94–0.98]). Conclusion: Many participants with symptomatic DE did not use optimized eye drop treatment and identified risk factors for no eye drop use. The DryEyeRhythm application may help improve DE treatment. Purpose: The first aim of this study was to compare inferior tear meniscus height (TMH) measured by keratography and swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT). Effect of locations of fluorescein instillation and subjects' subjective sensation, and the TMH results were also investigated. Methods: Forty-one eyes from 41 healthy adults had TMH randomly measured by keratography (K5M, Oculus, Germany) and swept-source OCT (Casia SS-1000, Tomey Corp, Japan) at baseline, followed by touching either the inferior bulbar or inferior palpebral conjunctiva, randomly assigned, with a moistened fluorescein strip. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare TMH obtained from the two devices and three measurement conditions. Subjective sensation of conjunctival touch was obtained through a 4-point scale with zero representing no sensation, and one to three representing ocular sensation in an ascending order. Results: Two-way ANOVA revealed no significant difference in TMH between keratography and swept-source OCT (Factor (devices): F = 0.579, p =.451) while there was a significant difference among fluorescein instillations (Factor (conditions): F = 10.146, p <.001). Baseline TMH was around 0.25 mm, and increased to around 0.28 mm after instillation of fluorescein sodium. Ocular sensation was similar between the two conjunctival touch, and TMH was not significantly associated with ocular sensation. Conclusions: Keratography and swept-source OCT provided similar TMH results. Applying fluorescein sodium through moistened fluorescein strip could over-estimate TMH by around 0.03 mm. Applying moistened fluorescein strip at bulbar or palpebral conjunctival led to similar subjective sensations and did not affect TMH measurement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate the relation between body mass index (BMI) and dry eye disease (DED)., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey in 85,264 Japanese men and women aged 40 to 74 years who participated in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study for the Next Generation (JPHC-NEXT Study). Dry eye disease was defined as the presence of severe symptoms or clinical diagnosis. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) of DED associated with BMI and their two-sided 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We adjusted for age, cohort area, visual display terminal time, smoking status, alcohol intake, education status, income status, as well as history of hormone replacement therapy for women., Results: Prevalence of DED was 23.4% (n = 19,985; 6,289 men, 13,696 women). Higher BMI was correlated with a lower prevalence of DED in a dose-response fashion, with an adjusted OR of DED (95% CI) per 1 kg/m2 increment of BMI of 0.98 (95% CI: 0.97-0.99) for men and 0.97 (95% CI: 0.97-0.98) for women., Conclusions: This large population-based study showed an inverse relationship between BMI and prevalence of DED in a Japanese population.
