The article discusses a study on the molecular and phenotypic characteristics of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium isolated from cattle in two farms in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. A brief discussion on Salmonella infections and the emergence of extended-spectrum cephalosporin (ESC)-resistant Salmonella is provided. In the study, an AmpC &beta-lactamase encoded by the blaCMY-2 gene was used to mediate the resistance of the two isolates from the antimicrobial ESC. It was found that the blaCMY-2-carrying plasmids were different in size. The isolates seem to be closely related based on the findings from macrorestriction analysis and phage typing.

The article discusses a study on the prevalence of colistin-resistant mcr-1-positive pathogenic escherichia coli in swine in Japan from 2007 to 2014. The study examined swine-pathogenic escherichia coli strains isolated from swine throughout the country. It also analyzed strains for susceptibility to colistin and for mcr-1 carriage.

The article presents study on the changing prevalence of O-serogroups and antimicrobial vulnerability among Escherichia coli (STEC) strains isolated from healthy dairy cows in Japan between 2006 and 2007. The study shows 28 of the 118 STEC strains resist to some conventional drugs. Among these drugs are dihydrostreptomycin, oxytetracycline and aminobenzylpenicillin. It was found out that the anti-microbial resistance ratio in cows increased from 8.7%-24%, though STEC prevalence declined from 17%-12%.

The article presents a study on Erysipelothrix infections in stray dogs in Japan. It mentions about different strains in the genus Erysipelothrix, that is a pathogenic bacterium and states that dogs develop endocarditis after intravenous inoculation. Also described is the methodology of the study, in which serum samples from stray dogs reveals that Erysipelothrix infections can cause endocarditis and arthritis in the animals.
