Obligately anaerobic, Gram-stain-negative, wavy rods, strains 17YCFAHCo10, 18YCFAH0.3Co2 and 19YCFAH0.3Co2, were isolated from faecal samples of healthy Japanese people. The three isolates showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Waltera intestinalis WCA3-601-WT-6H T (99.2-100 %) and Brotolimicola acetigignens f&#95;CXY T (99.2-99.7 %). The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the three isolates formed a cluster with W. intestinalis WCA3-601-WT-6H T . Strain 19YCFAH0.3Co2 formed a subcluster with the type strain of W. intestinalis and did not form a cluster with the other two isolates. B. acetigignens f&#95;CXY T also formed a cluster with W. intestinalis WCA3-601-WT-6H T and three isolates. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between strain 19YCFAH0.3Co2 and W. intestinalis WCA3-601-WT-6H T were higher (72 % dDDH and 97 % ANI) than the cut-off values for species delimitation, indicating that strain 19YCFAH0.3Co2 is W. intestinalis . On the other hand, the dDDH and ANI values between strains 17YCFAHCo10 and 18YCFAH0.3Co2 and the type strain of W. intestinalis were lower (<34 % dDDH and <87 % ANI) than the cut-off values for species delimitation, indicating that these two isolates are different species from W. intestinalis . The percentage of conserved proteins and the average amino acid identity values support the assignment of the isolates to the genus Waltera . Strains 17YCFAHCo10 and 18YCFAH0.3Co2 could be distinguished from W. intestinalis by their inability to ferment melibiose and ribose and lack of activity for β -glucuronidase. In addition, the dDDH and ANI values between two strains (17YCFAHCo10 and 18YCFAH0.3Co2) and B. acetigignens f&#95;CXY T were higher (>78 % dDDH and >97 % ANI), indicating these two strains and B. acetigignens are the same species. As the genus Waltera has priority, B. acetigignens is transferred to the genus Waltera as Waltera acetigignens comb. nov. The type strain of W. acetigignens is f&#95;CXY T (=JCM 34988 T =DSM 107528 T ).

This paper addresses influence of two different temperature profiles during startup periods in the Japan Materials Testing Reactor and a boiling water reactor upon microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of austenitic stainless steel irradiated with neutrons to about 1 dpa and 3 dpa. One of the temperature profiles was that the specimens experienced neutron irradiation in both reactors, under which the irradiation temperature transiently increased to 290 °C from room temperature with increasing reactor power during reactor startup periods. Another was that the specimens were pre-heated to about 150 °C prior to the irradiation to suppress the transient temperature increase. Tensile tests at 290 °C and Vickers hardness tests at room temperature were carried out, and their microstructures were observed by FEG-TEM. Difference of the temperature profiles was observed obviously in interstitial cluster formation, in particular, growth of Frank loops. Although influence of neutron irradiation involving transient temperature increase to 290 °C from room temperature on the yield strength and the Vickers hardness is buried in the trend curves of existing data, the influence was also found certainly in increment of in yield strength, existence of modest yield drop, and loss of strain hardening capacity and ductility. As a result, Frank loops, which were observed in austenitic stainless steel irradiated at doses of 1 dpa or more, seemed to have important implications regarding the interpretation of not irradiation hardening, but deformation of the austenitic stainless steel. Barrett’s esophagus is a well-known acquired condition resulting from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, it is still unknown whether Barrett’s esophagus develops gradually over time in patients with GERD. To address this issue, we investigated the change in the prevalence and length of short-segment Barrett’s esophagus (SSBE) over time. From January 2005 to March 2007, we enrolled 5338 patients who received upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Prevalence and length of endoscopically identified SSBE were evaluated within groups divided on the basis of 10-year age intervals. The factors possibly influencing SSBE length such as symptoms, antacid use, and endoscopic findings were also evaluated. Additionally, the length change in 236 patients with histologically confirmed Barrett’s esophagus was evaluated over a 2-year follow-up. Of the 5338 enrolled patients, 1997 had SSBE. The prevalence of endoscopically identified SSBE was significantly higher and its length was significantly longer in elderly patients. Multiple regression analysis showed that age, presence of reflux esophagitis, reflux symptoms, and hiatal hernia were positively correlated with SSBE length. Analysis of the 2-year follow-up study of histologically confirmed SSBE revealed significant extension of Barrett’s length in 28.0% of 236 patients. Presence of reflux symptoms and hiatal hernia were identified as positive predictors and proton pump inhibitor administration as a negative predictor of SSBE elongation. Background: The incidence of an elongated styloid process (SP) and average length and diameter of SP have not been reported using Japanese cadavers. Data on the female-to-male ratio of an elongated SP vary. We calculated the average length and diameter of SP in Japanese cadavers and compared SP lengths between sexes., Materials and Methods: Twenty-seven sides (right and left of bodies) in males and 51 sides in females were analysed. Measurements were obtained from the inferior external acoustic meatus to the distal tip of the SP. SP diameters at the proximal base, midpoint, and distal tip were measured. SP > 30 mm was considered elongated. We used Welch's t-test for the statistical analysis. Fisher's exact two-tailed test was also performed to analyse the female-to-male elongation ratio. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: Styloid process elongation prevalence was 29.5% in our sample. The average full length was 27.04 ± 7.88 mm overall; the average diameters were 5.41 ± 1.77 mm at the proximal base and 2.21 ± 1.22 mm at the distal tip. The average SP measurement was 26.81 ± 5.92 mm in males and 27.16 ± 8.79 mm in females (p = 0.74). The female-to-male ratio of SP elongation was 1:2 (p = 0.041). Females had longer full lengths of non-elongated SPs than males (p = 0.004). Males had wider diameters at the proximal base of elongated SPs than females (p = 0.017)., Conclusions: The average length of SP was 27.04 mm in the Japanese population and about 30% of the Japanese presented SP ≥ 30 mm. Male had significantly higher rate than female among the SP ≥ 30 mm, and female had significantly longer SPs than male among the SP < 30 mm. Anatomically, the SP gets narrow as distally goes. Our anatomical findings would be beneficial to creating treatment plans, diagnosis, and surgery.
