A recent study conducted at Osaka Dental University in Japan explored the surface modification of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) for dental applications. The researchers used a carboxylation method called Friedel-Crafts acylation with succinic anhydride to introduce carboxyl groups onto the PEEK sample surfaces. They also examined the possibility of further chemical modifications using these carboxyl groups. The study found that the Friedel-Crafts acylation method successfully produced carboxyl groups on the PEEK surfaces, and further chemical modifications were also possible.
