The Bakarwali goat is a prominent goat breed of Jammu and Kashmir with a hardy and robust physique, which are also well adapted to high altitudes when they are taken to highland pastures every summer. The study was undertaken to see if the electrocardiographic physiology of Bakarwali goats were different from other goat breeds resident in the plains. Three bipolar standard limb leads (I, II and III) and three unipolar augmented limb leads (aVR, aVL and aVF) were used for electrocardiographic tracings in local non-migratory Bakarwali goats of both sexes, aged between 8 months to 2 years. Heart rate ranged from 53-107 beats per minute (bpm), with a mean of 93.08±4.98 bpm; and the mean electrical axis (MEA) was found to be 94.83°±0.46. It was possible to observe subtle differences in the electrocardiogram of the goats when compared to those described for other goat breeds. The normal ECG parameters described in the present study also has a diagnostic significance while comparing ECG values or their alterations during diagnosis of cardiac ailments and arrhythmias in the Bakarwali goat.
