Mercury (Hg) is a global environmental concern due to its toxicity (especially high in methylated form) and the long-range distribution of its gaseous elemental form (GEM). Hg-contaminated areas, such as abandoned mining sites, pose intrinsic difficulties for their management and heavy monitoring costs. In these environments, plant-based solutions may play a key role in the ecosystem quality assessment and support remediation strategies, combining reliability and costeffectiveness. In this study, we adopted a biomonitoring approach by using tree rings of four different species collected in the proximity of the miningmetallurgical area of Abbadia San Salvatore, central Italy, a major former Hg mining district whose reclamation is currently in progress. Our dendrochemical analysis was aimed at identifying the historical changes of local atmospheric Hg contamination and at singling out, for the first time in the study area, other potentially toxic elements (PTEs) associated with the past mining activity. Collected cores dated back to early as 1940 and provided the temporal patterns of atmospheric Hg emission vs the produced liquid quantities, so reconstructing the historical impact of the mining site on nearby terrestrial ecosystems and resident human population. Current GEM contamination was found about twenty times lower than that of the fully operational mine periods. From a first survey on other PTEs, thallium (Tl) and lead (Pb) appeared to be potentially associated with the mining activity, thus suggesting new working assumptions for further dendrochemical analyses and for the inclusion of Pb in human biomonitoring surveys of the Mt. Amiata area, actually not present in the control list. The results prompt a more thorough assessment by tracking for a longer time span a critical site that is an ideal open-field lab to study the ecophysiology of different tree species in relation to environmental behavior of PTEs for better-assessing wildlife and human exposures. When it comes to appraising Italy's colonial experience one characteristic stands out: the Italian colonial traditions are defined probably more than any other by concerns about emigration. From the Risorgimento to the early Republican period, Italian colonialisms are primarily informed by concerns over an excess of labour. The colonial situation, however, is typically defined by a demand for labour--no wonder that Italian colonial traditions were and saw themselves as an outlier. In its imagination, this colonialism required no Indigenous labour (in practice, however, to make the colonial enterprise viable, it often did). In Italy, the problem of contaminated sites was introduced for the first time at a regulatory level with the 'Ronchi Decree' No. 22 of 1997. Subsequently, the regulations that defined most of the contaminated Sites of National Interest (SINs) were Law No. 426 of 09.12.1998 and Law no. 179 of 31.07.2002. Today, the reference directive is the Legislative Decree 152/2006 'Consolidated Environmental Act', which in Part IV, Title V 'Remediation of contaminated sites', dictates the administrative and technical procedures for the remediation of contaminated sites. Over time, there have been numerous regulatory updates that have changed the selection criteria for the SINs, leading some of these to be downgraded to Sites of Regional Interest (SIRs). The SINs in their entirety are managed by the Italian Ministry of the Environment, today called 'of the Ecological Transition', while the pass to the competence of the territorially concerned Regions SIRs regarding the verification and eventual remediation operations. Currently, in Italy there are 42 SINs and 17 SIRs. All the information derived from the various environmental regulations and that found in the context of the remediation procedures made it possible to define the exposure of the population residing in the areas adjacent to the SINs and SIRs as well as the elaboration of sheets containing all the site-specific information.

Farmland abandonment is one of the most important land use changes in the world today and crucial to the sustainable development of the global environment. The authors carried out extensive research on farmland abandonment from many perspectives, but, due to the variety of the research contents, rich research perspectives, and complex research objects, the current research in this field lacks comprehensiveness, objectivity, and systematization. In this study, the bibliometric R software packages bibliometrix and biblioshiny (K-Synth Srl, Naples, Italy) were used to analyze the development history and current situation of 896 articles on farmland abandonment in the Web of Science core collection database from 1980 to 2021, revealing their research hotspots and predicting the future development trends. Over the past 40 years, the number of published papers on abandoned farmland has continuously increased. Research mainly focused on the ecological environment, with natural succession, biodiversity, and vegetation restoration being high-frequency keywords in this field. Research on the social aspects of farmland abandonment has developed rapidly in the past 6 years. Based on these findings, this paper put forward four future research directions: the data source for the extraction of abandoned farmland should transform to high spatial-temporal resolution and hyperspectral remote sensing images; the method should pay more attention to the time series change detection and the application of the model; future research should focus on the economic costs of the reclamation of abandoned farmland and the ecological consequences of such reclamation; and the global ecological impact of vegetation succession after the abandonment of farmland should be further discussed from a broader perspective.

In Sardinia, as in many other Mediterranean regions, recurrent droughts and climate change have dramatically reduced available water resources. As a result of this critical situation, in 1995 the Italian Government declared a state of emergency and drew up a program for financial support by the State and local authorities with the aim of reducing this serious deficit. One of the actions focused on reclaiming and reusing the effluent from the sewage treatment plant of Cagliari. This article reports on the multidisciplinary preliminary study performed by the Ente Acque della Sardegna (ENAS) to evaluate the suitability of reusing Is Arenas effluent for irrigation and on the operation of the tertiary treatment plant. At present about 1200t/year (the 45% b.w. of the solid waste production) of exhaust sands utilized for moulds and cores in the magnesium casting operations of a foundry plant in Northern Italy are landfilled. In fact, these sands cannot be subjected to the usual process of thermal regeneration because of the presence of potassium fluoborate, a salt which becomes plastic at high temperature values and binds silica grains in close heaps. A dissolution process was tested as a possible solution aimed at recovering both silica sands and potassium fluoborate. Some laboratory tests were performed in order to single out the best operative conditions (dissolution temperature, contact time and solid–liquid ratio) to obtain high quality products and raw water saving. On the ground of the obtained results a full scale plant for the sands reclamation was designed: for this plant the equipments design, the streams evaluation and the costs assessing were performed. In Italy quarrying causes relevant environmental damages and alterations to the land and the ecosystems. Despite the present Italian legislation requiring the restoration of the sites after exploitation, most of the quarries, both the abandoned and the still operational ones, are not restored.The objective of this work is to indicate a monitoring methodology in order to survey the present state of the quarry sites and their evolution in time, which are the basic data needed to implement an adequate land reclamation project.Such methodology has been applied to several abandoned limestone quarries in the Latina province (close to Rome), characterised by a typical Mediterranean vegetation, but it can be applied to any other kind of litology and vegetation.The land monitoring has been realised both by using remote sensing techniques, supported by a Geographic Information System of the studied area, and by in situ surveying. Objectives: to examine the progress of the remediation and disposal of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in Tuscany Region (Central Italy), the relative workforce employed, and how these activities are framed and reflected in the Italian panorama., Design: descriptive study on the asbestos removal process in Tuscany., Setting and Participants: Reports drawn up according to article No. 9 of Law No. 257/92 received by the Tuscany Region from 1993 to 2019. The on-line submission of the reports has been available since 2011., Main Outcome Measures: quantities and characteristics of used or removed ACMs by compact and friable matrix, the ones transferred to temporary storage and/or landfill plants during 1995-2019; number of employees engaged in activities with asbestos presence, by type and duration of activity during 2015-2019., Results: from 1993 to 2019, the Tuscany Region received a total of 5,284 reports. From 1995 to 2019, a total of 423,487 tons of ACMs were removed in Tuscany, 402,897 in a compact matrix and 20,590 in a friable matrix. Over the past five years, the workers employed in these activities were on average 1,500, with around 182,000 hours per year in contact with ACMs., Conclusions: Reports article No. 9 are an essential tool to monitor and evaluate the impact of political choices to incentivize the process of ACM removal, which is still proceeding too slowly: still 3/4 of installed ACMs remain in place 28 years after the ban. Furthermore, Reports article No. 9 are a source to identify workers who are potentially exposed to lower doses than in the past; they can be included in epidemiological cohort studies as well as in health surveillance programmes of past asbestos workers, an essential assistance level of collective prevention., Competing Interests: None declared

In many parts of Italy, particularly in the South, it has become ever more difficult to meet the water demand. The recent years of drought and the constant increase of water demand for the civil sector havemade irrigation supply more problematic. Wastewater reuse could represent a viable solution to meet water demand. The focus of this paperis on the regulation problems, hampering the development of wastewater reuse for irrigation, and on the potentials for reuse, particularly in Southern Italy. Planned exploitation of municipal wastewater could help meeting the irrigation water demand particularly in Southern Italy, where farmers have been practicing uncontrolled wastewater reuse for a long time. In Northern and Central Italy, where available water resources generally meet water needs for different purposes, wastewater reuse could play an important role in controlling the pollution of water bodies. Despite the fact that Italian legislation is extremely strict and outdated, for several years in some regions, such as Sicily, wastewater reuse systems have been in operation; furthermore,several projects of wastewater reuse are currently in progress. The purpose of this work is to check construction and operation costs for simplified post-treatment trains able to produce water displaying a quality suitable for different agricultural uses. Having in mindthe quality of most of surface waters in Italy, the main parameters to control for a general purpose reclaimed water supply are microbialquality and TSS content. Therefore a contact filtration followed by disinfection is to be considered the minimum option, while the use ofpolishing ponds can be strictly limited in many Italian regions due to the area requirements and to the need to provide a full lining of bottom and levees. Some data referring to surface waters quality and to the Italian epidemiological situation are given. On the basis of the current Italian situation, the construction and operation cost increases due to a polishing section, downstream a standard municipal WWTP, are evaluated and the impact of different technical choices is shortly discussed (disinfection options, chemicals, etc.).
