Kidney transplant (KT) recipients are known to be at risk of developing several cancer types; however, cancer mortality in this population is underinvestigated. Our study aimed to assess the risk of cancer death among Italian KT recipients compared to the corresponding general population. A cohort study was conducted among 7373 individuals who underwent KT between 2003 and 2020 in 17 Italian centers. Date and cause of death were retrieved until 31 December 2020. Indirect standardization was used to estimate standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Cancer was the most common cause of death among the 7373 KT recipients, constituting 32.4% of all deaths. A 1.8‐fold excess mortality (95% CI: 1.59‐2.09) was observed for all cancers combined. Lymphomas (SMR = 6.17, 95% CI: 3.81‐9.25), kidney cancer (SMR = 5.44, 95% CI: 2.97‐8.88) and skin melanoma (SMR = 3.19, 95% CI: 1.03‐6.98) showed the highest excess death risks. In addition, SMRs were increased about 1.6 to 3.0 times for cancers of lung, breast, bladder and other hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues. As compared to the general population, relative cancer mortality risk remained significantly elevated in all age groups though it decreased with increasing age. A linear temporal increase in SMR over time was documented for all cancers combined (P <.01). Our study documented significantly higher risks of cancer death in KT recipients than in the corresponding general population. Background: Improvements in perinatal care have substantially decreased mortality rates among preterm infants, yet their neurodevelopmental outcomes and quality of life persist as a pertinent public health concern. Family-centered care has emerged as a holistic philosophy that promotes effective alliances among patients, families, and healthcare providers to improve the quality of care. Aims: This longitudinal prospective study aims to evaluate the neurodevelopmental outcomes and brain MRI findings in a cohort of preterm newborns admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) adopting a family-centered care model. Methods: Very low birth weight (VLBW) infants admitted to the NICU of Modena between 2015 and 2020 were enrolled. Infants who underwent conventional brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at term-equivalent age were included. Neurodevelopmental follow-up was performed until the age of 24 months by a multidisciplinary team using the Amiel-Tison neurological assessment and the Griffiths Mental Developmental Scales (GMDS-R). Neurodevelopmental outcomes were classified as major sequelae (cerebral palsy, DQ ≤ 70, severe sensory impairment), minor sequelae (minor neurological signs such as clumsiness or DQ between 71 and 85), and normal outcomes (no neurological signs and DQ > 85). Risk factors for severe outcomes were assessed. Results: In total, 49 of the 356 infants (13.8%) died before hospital discharge, and 2 were excluded because of congenital disorders. Of the remaining 305 infants, 222 (72.8%) completed the 24 month follow-up and were included in the study. Neurodevelopmental outcomes were classified as normal (n = 173, 77.9%), minor (n = 34, 15.3%), and major sequelae (n = 15, 6.8%). Among 221 infants undergoing brain MRI, 76 (34.4%) had major lesions (intraventricular hemorrhage, hemorrhagic parenchymal infarction, periventricular leukomalacia, and large cerebellar hemorrhage). In the multivariate regression model, the retinopathy of prematurity (OR 1.8; p value 0.016) and periventricular–intraventricular hemorrhage (OR 5.6; p value < 0.004) were associated with major sequelae. Conclusions: We reported low rates of severe neurodevelopmental outcomes in VLBW infants born in an Italian NICU with FCC. Identifying the risk factors for severe outcomes can assist in tailoring and optimizing early interventions on an individual basis, both within the NICU and after discharge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In August 2022, Italy launched a vaccination campaign to combat the spread of the monkeypox virus, which the WHO has designated as a public health emergency. Priority targets for the campaign included laboratory personnel and men who have sex with men with specific risk criteria. Primary immunization involved two doses of the Imvanex/Jynneos vaccine, followed by a single booster dose. We conducted a study in two Italian towns, Bologna and Forlì, in October and November 2022 to investigate adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) of the monkeypox vaccine through participant-based active surveillance. Participants who received the vaccine and were aged 18 and over were invited to complete an e-questionnaire by scanning a QR code during their second vaccine appointment or by email one month after the booster dose. A descriptive analysis of AEFI incidences was conducted, with the results stratified by type and severity of symptoms. A total of 135 first-dose, 50 second-dose, and 6 single-dose recipients were included, with a mean age of 36.4 ± 8.7 years. Systemic reactions after the first and second doses were reported by 39.3% and 26.0% of participants, respectively, with asthenia being the most common symptom. Local site reactions were reported by 97.0% and 100.0% of participants, respectively, with redness, swelling, and itching being the most common local AEFIs. Grade 3 or 4 AEFIs were reported for local AEFIs only by 16.8% and 14.0% of participants after the first and second doses, respectively. Our findings suggest that the monkeypox vaccine has a high tolerability profile in terms of short-term common systemic AEFIs. Simple Summary: Solid-organ transplant recipients are known to be at higher risk of developing several cancer types, mainly virus-related malignancies. Monitoring trends in the incidence of post-transplant cancers among individuals who received solid organ transplantation helps to improve preventive measures and outcomes. This cohort study aimed to examine, over a 25-year period in Italy, variations in the occurrence of post-transplant cancers among 11,418 recipients of kidney transplantation (KT). Cancer incidence over three periods (1997–2004; 2005–2012; and 2013–2021) was analyzed within the cohort and in comparison with the general population. After multivariate adjustment, both approaches highlighted reduced risks of Kaposi's sarcoma, whereas no statistically significant changes over time in the incidence of other cancers were noted. Accordingly, the results of this study highlighted the need to sustain and strengthen cancer-preventive actions in KT recipients. This cohort study examined 25-year variations in cancer incidence among 11,418 Italian recipients of kidney transplantation (KT) from 17 Italian centers. Cancer incidence was examined over three periods (1997–2004; 2005–2012; and 2013–2021) by internal (Incidence rate ratio-IRR) and external (standardized incidence ratios-SIR) comparisons. Poisson regression was used to assess trends. Overall, 1646 post-transplant cancers were diagnosed, with incidence rates/1000 person-years ranging from 15.5 in 1997–2004 to 21.0 in 2013–2021. Adjusted IRRs showed a significant reduction in incidence rates across periods for all cancers combined after exclusion of nonmelanoma skin cancers (IRR = 0.90, 95% confidence interval-CI: 0.76–1.07 in 2005–2012; IRR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.60–0.87 in 2013–2021 vs. 1997–2004; Ptrend < 0.01). In site-specific analyses, however, significant changes in incidence rates were observed only for Kaposi's sarcoma (KS; IRR = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.24–0.57 in 2005–2012; IRR = 0.09, 95% CI: 0.04–0.18 in 2013–2021; Ptrend < 0.01). As compared to the general population, the overall post-transplant cancer risk in KT recipients was elevated, with a decreasing magnitude over time (SIR = 2.54, 95% CI: 2.26–2.85 in 1997–2004; SIR = 1.99, 95% CI: 1.83–2.16 in 2013–2021; Ptrend < 0.01). A decline in SIRs was observed specifically for non-Hodgkin lymphoma and KS, though only the KS trend retained statistical significance after adjustment. This paper presents a comparative analysis of two hydrological models in the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) software, namely, the non-linear reservoir (N-LR) and the unit hydrograph (UH), on the urban catchment of Cascina Scala, Pavia in Italy. The two models were applied for the simulation of the rainfall-runoff transformation in the 42 sub-catchments in Cascina Scala, while flow routing in the underground channels was simulated by means of the De Saint-Venant equations. A dataset of rainfall and runoff for 14 events from 2000 to 2003 was adopted for the calibration and validation of the models. The calibration was performed on 7 out of the 14 events by maximizing the fit of modeled-to-measured hydrographs in the final channel of the system. Prediction performance was assessed through different indices. Results from both models fit measured data well in terms of the total hydrograph. Whereas the time to peak was reliably predicted by both models, the N-LR was found to slightly outperform the UH in terms of total volume and peak flow prediction, though it requires a more detailed knowledge of the system for its implementation. Climate change increasingly is affecting every aspect of human life on the earth. Many regional climate models (RCMs) have so far been developed to carefully assess this important phenomenon on specific regions. In this study, ten RCMs captured from the European Coordinated Downscaling Experiment (EURO CORDEX) platform are evaluated on the river Chiese catchment located in the northeast of Italy. The models' ensembles are assessed in terms of the uncertainty and error calculated through different statistical and error indices. The uncertainties are investigated in terms of signal (increase, decrease, or neutral changes in the variables) and value uncertainties. Together with the spatial analysis of the data over the catchment, the weighted averaged values are used for the models' evaluations and data projections. Using weighted catchment variables, climate change impacts are assessed on 10 different hydro-climatological variables showing the changes in the temperature, precipitation, rainfall events' features, and the hydrological variables of the Chiese catchment between historical (1991–2000) and future (2071–2080) decades under RCP (Representative Concentration Path for increasing greenhouse gas emissions) scenario 4.5. The results show that, even though the multi-model ensemble mean (MMEM) could cover the outputs' uncertainty of the models, it increases the error of the outputs. On the other hand, the RCM with the least error could cause high signal and value uncertainties for the results. Hence, different multi-model subsets of ensembles (MMEM-s) of 10 RCMs are obtained through a proposed algorithm for different impact models' calculations and projections, making tradeoffs between two important shortcomings of model outputs, which are error and uncertainty. The single model (SM) and multi-model (MM) outputs imply that catchment warming is obvious in all cases and, therefore, evapotranspiration will be intensified in the future where there are about 1.28% and 6% value uncertainties for monthly temperature increase and the decadal relative balance of evapotranspiration, respectively. While rainfall events feature higher intensity and shorter duration in the SM, there are no significant differences for the mentioned features in the MM, showing high signal uncertainties in this regard. The unchanged catchment rainfall events' depth can be observed in two SM and MM approaches, implying good signal certainty for the depth feature trend; there is still high uncertainty about the depth values. As a result of climate change, the percolation component change is negligible, with low signal and value uncertainties, while decadal evapotranspiration and discharge uncertainties show the same signal and value. While extreme events and their anomalous outcomes direct the uncertainties in rainfall events' features' values towards zero, they remain critical for yearly maximum catchment discharge in 2071–2080 as the highest value uncertainty is observed for this variable. Background: Most people infected with Leishmania remain asymptomatic, which is a common element that may promote the resurgence of clinically evident leishmaniasis in individuals with impaired cell-mediated immune responses. Unfortunately, there is no universally accepted assay to identify asymptomatic infection. This cross-sectional study focuses on the employment of three methods targeting different features of the parasitic infection to be used in combination for the screening of latent leishmaniasis in a newly endemic area of northeastern Italy. Methodology/principle findings: The selected methods included highly sensitive Real-Time PCR for detection of parasitic kinetoplast (k)DNA in peripheral blood, Western Blot (WB) for detection of specific IgG, and Whole Blood stimulation Assay (WBA) to evaluate the anti-leishmanial T-cell response by quantifying the production of IL-2 after stimulation of patients' blood with Leishmania specific antigens. Among 145 individuals, living in a municipality of the Bologna province, northeastern Italy, recruited and screened for Leishmania infection, 23 subjects tested positive (15.9%) to one or more tests. Positive serology was the most common marker of latent leishmaniasis (15/145, 10%), followed by the detection of specific cell-mediated response (12/145, 8%), while only few individuals (6/145, 4%) harbored parasitic DNA in the blood. Conclusions/significance: Combining different tests substantially increased the yield of positivity in detecting latent Leishmania infection. The test combination that we employed in this study appears to be effective to accurately identify latent leishmaniasis in an endemic area. Author summary: After infection with Leishmania infantum cutaneous or visceral leishmaniasis can develop, but in most cases the host becomes an asymptomatic carrier of the parasite. This key population of individuals with latent leishmaniasis can undergo reactivation of the infection with severe outcome in case of immunosuppression and can contribute to disease transmission. The public health impact of leishmaniasis is currently underestimated in Europe, despite Leishmania infection is endemic in the Mediterranean countries and outbreaks of human leishmaniasis have been reported in the last decades, including northeastern Italy. One of the causes contributing to this neglect is that the available diagnostic tests exhibit scarce sensitivity in identification of latent leishmaniasis. In this study, we identified latent Leishmania infection in a newly endemic area of northeastern Italy by using three different diagnostic methods; serological, molecular and immunological tests. Sixteen percent of individuals residing in the selected area were shown to be positive to at least one of the three tests, which indicates that they have been in contact with the parasite. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are beneficial soil microorganisms that can establish symbiotic associations with Vitis vinifera roots, resulting in positive effects on grapevine performance, both in terms of water use efficiency, nutrient uptake, and replant success. Grapevine is an important perennial crop cultivated worldwide, especially in Mediterranean countries. In Italy, Piedmont is one of the regions with the longest winemaking tradition. In the present study, we characterized the AMF communities of the soil associated or not with the roots of V. vinifera cv. Pinot Noir cultivated in a vineyard subjected to conventional management using 454 Roche sequencing technology. Samplings were performed at two plant phenological stages (flowering and early fruit development). The AMF community was dominated by members of the family Glomeraceae, with a prevalence of the genus Glomus and the species Rhizophagus intraradices and Rhizophagus irregularis. On the contrary, the genus Archaeospora was the only one belonging to the family Archaeosporaceae. Since different AMF communities occur in the two considered soils, independently from the plant phenological stage, a probable role of V. vinifera in determining the AMF populations associated to its roots has been highlighted. This paper aims to analyze the flood hazard in the city of Monza, which periodically suffers from overflows from both the river Lambro and the urban drainage system during wet weather conditions. A unified Urban Flash Flood Model of Monza is therefore developed to capture both sources of hazard. The model is first validated by comparing the results of simulations with historical data related to the area of Monza, then is exploited to obtain maximum flood depth and velocity maps for three different return periods. Overall, the results show the different nature of the flood-related hazard and the sewer-related hazard: the former is concentrated across the rivers whereas the latter spreads patchy over the territory. Furthermore, the former features much larger water levels and flow velocities, which result in more serious hazard to citizens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. To compare two radiofrequency (RF) devices, Simplicity III (conventional RF), and SInergy (cooled RF), which are specifically designed to denervate the sacroiliac joint (SIJ). Design. Retrospective observational study. Setting. Italian National Health Service Public Hospital. Subjects. Forty-three patients with SIJ-derived pain refractory to conservative treatment; 21 and 22 patients, respectively, received Simplicity III or SInergy to denervate the SIJ. Methods. Mean numerical rating scale (NRS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores were determined for each study group up to 12 months postprocedure. Secondary outcomes included the average amount of time required to complete each RF procedure and the adverse events associated with each technique. Results. Average SInergy group NRS and ODI scores were consistently less than those in the Simplicity III cohort at each post-RF denervation follow-up, and such differences were statistically significant at six and 12 months. The Simplicity III procedure was completed approximately 2.5 times faster than the SInergy procedure, and one minor adverse event was reported in the SInergy group. Conclusions. The study results suggest that SInergy safely afforded patients with greater and more durable analgesia and disability relief than Simplicity III for SIJ-derived pain. The Simplicity III procedure may be more conducive than SInergy for bilateral procedures and for patients who have limited tolerance to be in an RF procedure-required prone position. Randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the implication made in this study that SInergy is the preferred RF denervation option for treating SIJderived pain and the disability associated with it. Background. Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice to restore fertility to women on renal replacement therapy. Over time, immunosuppressive, support therapies and approaches towards high-risk pregnancies have changed. The aim of this study was to analysematernal-foetal outcomes in two cohorts of transplanted women who delivered a live-born baby in Italy in 1978- 2013, dichotomized into delivery before and after January 2000. Methods. A survey involving all the Italian transplant centres was carried out, gathering data on all pregnancies recorded since the start of activity at each centre; the estimated nationwide coverage was 75%. Data on cause of ESRD, dialysis, living/cadaveric transplantation, drug therapy, comorbidity, and the main maternal-foetal outcomes were recorded and reviewed. Data were compared with a low-risk cohort of pregnancies from two large Italian centres (2000-14; Torino and Cagliari Observational Study cohort). Results. The database consists of 222 pregnancies with liveborn babies after transplantation (83 before 2000 and 139 in 2000-13; 68 and 121 with baseline and birth data, respectively), and 1418 low-risk controls. The age of the patients significantly increased over time (1978-99: age 30.7 ± 3.7 versus 34.1 ± 3.7 in 2000-13; P < 0.001). Azathioprine, steroids and cyclosporine A were the main drugs employed in the first time period, while tacrolimus emerged in the second. The prevalence of early preterm babies increased from 13.4% in the first to 27.1% in the second period (P = 0.049), while late-preterm babies non-significantly decreased (38.8 versus 33.1%), thus leaving the prevalence of all preterm babies almost unchanged (52.2 and 60.2%; P = 0.372). Babies below the 5th percentile decreased over time (22.2 versus 9.6%; P = 0.036). In spite of high prematurity rates, no neonatal deaths occurred after 2000. The results in kidney transplant patients are significantly different from controls both considering all cases [preterm delivery: 57.3 versus 6.3%; early preterm: 22.2 versus 0.9%; small for gestational age (SGA): 14 versus 4.5%; P < 0.001] and considering only transplant patients with normal kidney function [preterm delivery: 35 versus 6.3%; early preterm: 10 versus 0.9%; SGA: 23.7 versus 4.5% (P < 0.001); risks increase across CKD stages]. Kidney function remained stable in most of the patients up to 6 months after delivery. Multiple regression analysis performed on the transplant cohort highlights a higher risk of preterm delivery in later CKD stages, an increase in pretermdelivery and a decrease in SGA across periods. Conclusions. Pregnancy after transplantation has a higher risk of adverse outcomes compared with the general population. Over time, the incidence of SGA babies decreased while the incidence of 'early preterm' babies increased. Although acknowledging the differences in therapy (cyclosporine versus tacrolimus) and in maternal age (significantly increased), the decrease in SGA and the increase in prematurity may be explained by an obstetric policy favouring earlier delivery against the risk of foetal growth restriction. The aim of this study was to relate in-hospital mortality (IHM), cardiovascular events (CVEs) and non-immunologic comorbidity evaluated on the basis of International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codification, in Italian kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). We evaluated IHM and admissions due to CVEs between 2000 and 2013 recorded in the database of the region Emilia Romagna. The Elixhauser score was calculated for evaluation of non-immunologic comorbidity. Three main outcomes (i.e. IHM, admission due to major CVEs and combined outcome) were the dependent variables of the multivariate models, while age, gender and Elixhauser score were the independent ones. During the examined period, a total of 9063 admissions in 3648 KTRs were recorded; 1945 patients were males (53.3 %) and 1703 females (46.7 %) and the mean age was 52.9 ± 13.1 years. The non-immunological impaired status of the KTRs, examined by the Elixhauser score, was 3.88 ± 4.29. During the 14-year follow-up period, IHM for any cause was 3.2 % (n = 117), and admissions due to CVEs were 527 (5.8 %). Age and comorbidity were independently associated with CVEs, IHM and the combined outcome. Male gender was independently associated with IHM and combined outcome, but not with CVEs. Evaluation of non-immunological comorbidity is important in KTRs and identification of high-risk patients for major clinical events could improve outcome. The increase of imperviousness due to urbanization creates adverse effects on the hydrological and environmental processes in a catchment. The increase in impervious areas leads to a higher runoff peak flow and stormwater pollution, even for a short duration of lowintensity rainfall. The present study focuses on the Bivio Vela catchment, an urban catchment of Pavia in northern Italy. This paper emphasizes both experimental and modeling approaches to the rainfall-runoff process and pollutant dynamics on the catchment surface and in the combined sewer system, considering significant increases in impervious area. Recent and future catchment developments caused the conversion of approximately 33% of the total area from nonurban pervious area to impervious area. The study also deals with the performance assessment of the wet-weather control system of the catchment, introducing simple indicators that account for the requirements of the urban drainage system and treatment plant. Imperviousness associated with urbanization in the catchment is invariably reflected in the receiving river flow regime and water quality. The simulation results indicate that the annual number and duration of sewer overflows and volume, peak flow, and pollutant mass discharged into the river have increased to different degrees due to urban expansion during the recent period and will continue to increase as urban areas increase in the future. The impact of urbanization on rainfall runoff and water quality should therefore be considered for effective urban and water infrastructure planning. The methodological approach and the proposed performance indicators, which take advantage of experimental data and are suitable for complex urban drainage systems, are original and promising for their help in formulating policy guidelines and intervention strategies that minimize the negative effects of urbanization on both the water environment and the treatment plant. This paper presents the results of an analysis aimed to assess the impact exerted on the flood regime of Lake Como and its emissary by different kinds of waterworks in the Adda basin (Italy). This includes construction of reservoirs in the Alps, increase in flow capacity of the exutory and regulation of Lake Como. The assessment of the management effect on peak floods is of particular interest as flood damages could be particularly heavy in densely populated areas along the lake banks and in the river flood plain downstream of the lake. The analysis is carried out by comparing the annual maxima of Lake Como levels and the river Adda discharges at Lecco, at the lake exutory, in different real and hypothetical situations. Both the construction of alpine reservoirs and the improvement of flow capacity of the exutory decrease lake levels and flood discharges, while lake regulation (for irrigation and power production) increases them. The overall effect is a generalised reduction of the flood levels and a slight increase in the discharges with return periods lower than 10 years. The discharges with higher return periods, instead, remain unchanged. Abstract: The performance of stormwater detention tanks with alternative design configurations (insertion in the storm sewer network; volume per impervious hectare) and operating conditions (continuous and intermittent emptying rules) have been evaluated according to an integrated approach. Various performance indices have been adopted to describe the mitigation of the pollution impact to the natural environment, the reduction of the management and maintenance charges for the urban drainage system, the preservation of the normal purification efficiency, and the limitation of the costs at the treatment plant. The US EPA Storm Water Management Model has been used to simulate the rainfall-runoff process and the pollutant dynamics on theoretical catchments and storm sewer networks for an individual event, as well as for a continuous run of events and inter event periods of one year recorded at the rain gauge of Cascina Scala (Pavia, northern Italy). Also the influence of the main characteristics of the urban catchment and the drainage system (area of the catchment and slope of the network) on the performance of alternative design and operating solutions has been examined. Stormwater detention tanks combined with flow regulators demonstrated good performance with respect to environmental pollution: satisfactory performance indicators can be obtained with fairly low flow rates of flow regulators (0.5–1 L/s per hectare of impervious area) and tank volumes of about 35–50 m3 per impervious hectare. Continuous emptying guaranteed the lowest number and duration of overflows, while an intermittent operation minimised the volume sent for purification reducing the costs and the risks of impairment in the normal treatment efficiency of the plant. Overall, simulation outcomes revealed that the performance indexes are scarcely affected by the area of the catchment and the slope of the drainage network. The research concerned the ecological impact assessment of urban wet-weather sewer discharges on the Vernavola river (Pavia, Northern Italy) focusing both on the sewer system and on the receiving natural environment. The complexity of the urban drainage system (combined sewer networks, pumping stations, stormwater storage tanks, etc.) was characterised through in situ inspections, measurements and numerical modelling. Various dry- and wet-weather monitoring campaigns on the Vernavola river provided the water quality tracers according to Italian standards: dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, ammonium, nitrate and Escherichia coli. The quality analyses were also devoted to the study of the macro-benthic community. Both the chemical and biological river quality appeared significantly affected by sewer overflow contaminants. During storm events the receiver ecosystem was severely loaded with organic pollution (wet-weather discharges were equivalent to a civil sewer discharge of about 68,000 population equivalent (PE)) and the biodiversity of the benthonic organisms populating the stream was reduced by the physical modification of the habitat. These sampling and modelling studies provided the priority support information for promoting solutions and management strategies on the entire chain 'sewer system-treatment plant-receiving natural environment' necessary to reach the stream quality objectives. The number of women who decide to have a child after organ transplantation has increased. We determined the outcomes of 67 pregnancies of women who had undergone kidney, liver or heart transplantation. All recipients had been maintained on immunosuppressive therapy before and during pregnancy. Pregnancy complications at term were observed in 17 out of 67 women (25%), hypertension being the most frequent complication (16.17%). Two transplant rejections were reported. Sixty-eight infants were delivered (including one pair of twins); five women had two pregnancies at term. Twenty-eight miscarriages (29.2%) were recorded. Of these 68 babies (including the pair of twins), 40 (58.8%) were born at term and 28 (41.2%) before term. The babies were followed-up for 2 months to 13 years. According to our previous experience, our study shows that patients who have undergone organ transplantation can give birth to healthy infants as long as they are monitored accurately during pregnancy. The optimal treatment of primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma (PMLBCL) is still undefined. In the absence of randomised studies, we retrospectively analysed: (a) the effectiveness of two chemotherapy regimens (CHOP vs MACOP-B/VACOP-B) in complete remission (CR) achievement and event-free survival (EFS) and (b) the role of mediastinal involved-field radiotherapy (IF-RT) as consolidation. From 1982 to 1999, 138 consecutive patients affected by PMLBCL were treated in 13 Italian institutions with CHOP (43) or MACOP-B/VACOP-B (95). The two groups of patients were similar as regard to age, gender, presence of bulky mediastinal mass, pleural effusion, stage and international prognostic indexes category of risk. Overall, 75.5% of patients in CR received IF-RT as consolidation. Complete remission was 51.1% in the CHOP group and 80% in MACOP-B/VACOP-B (P<0.001). Relapse occurred in 22.7% of CHOP- and in 9.2% of MACOP-B/VACOP-B-treated patients (n.s.). Event-free patients were 39.5% in CHOP and 75.7% in the MACOP-B/VACOP-B group (P<0.001). The addition of IF-RT as consolidation improved the outcome, irrespectively of the type of chemotherapy (P=0.04). At a multivariate analysis, achievement of CR (P<0.0001) and type of CT (MACOP-B/VACOP-B) retained the significance for OS (P=0.008) and EFS (P=0.03). In our experience, MACOP-B/VACOP-B appears to positively influence OS and EFS in patients affected by PMLBCL, as compared to CHOP. Every year, in Italy many new cases of Flavescence dorée (FD) and Esca disease (ED) are recorded in Vitis vinifera , resulting in plant death and reduced production. FD is caused by phytoplasmas and its main symptoms comprise growth reduction, leaf reddening and downward rolling. The vines affected by ED, a fungal disease, show foliar inter-venal necrosis and chlorosis. The aim of this work was to test a commercial optical sensor for the detection of FD and ED in plants. Three vineyards of the red grapevine Dolcetto cv. were mapped and plants showing FD or ED symptoms were georeferenced. In July 2015 and 2016, monitoring by optical sensors (OptRx®) was undertaken and leaf samples from plants were collected to confirm the presence of FD phytoplasmas by molecular analyses. The OptRx® records the reflectance and calculates two indices: normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalised difference red edge index (NDRE). A visible/near infrared (VIS/NIR) index was calculated from the two reflectances. Data were processed by either statistical analysis of raw data, to detect differences in the plant health status and between the two years, or by using filters to evaluate sensitivity and specificity of the sensor in detecting the diseases and create prediction indices. Diseased plants showed lower NDVI and NDRE values than healthy plants. A negative signal from the filter system was always associated with healthy plants. Further studies are needed in order to understand the most appropriate threshold and to implement the diagnostic algorithm to assess the presence of disease. • Diseased plants showed lower values of NDVI and NDRE than healthy ones. • Diseased plants presented higher values of VIS/NIR compared to healthy ones. • Index absolute values were highly variable across vineyards and years. • A normalised moving average metric was used to detect problem areas in the vineyard. • The employed algorithm correctly classified all healthy plants.
