The article discusses the highlights of the symposium "Pluripotency and Differentiation in Embryos and Stem Cells" held in Pavia, Italy on January 17-18, 2008. Speaker Anne Grete Byskov demonstrated that even within one colony of human embryonic stem (ES) cells (hESCs), there are regional differences in the expression of defining markets. Speaker Jose Cibelli explained that a human somatic nucleus transplanted into a non-human primate oocyte could produce immunotype-matched human ES cells without consumption of any human oocytes.
