We investigate the 1992–2000 surface deformation affecting the Abruzzi region, Central Italy, by exploiting two set of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data, acquired by the ERS-1/2 SAR sensors from ascending and descending orbits, respectively. We apply the Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DInSAR) technique to the SAR data set to estimate the displacement time-series and the corresponding velocity maps. Our DInSAR analysis allows us to detect a previously unreported major change in crustal deformation moving from the highest elevation of the Central Apennines to the Adriatic sector, that we infer as evidence of a complex tectonic boundary between two Adriatic microplates involving a wide interaction zone. An extension effect, at a rate of about 0.10 × 10–6 yr−1, is also confirmed by our investigation. A major QTL affecting root traits and leaf ABA concentration was identified in maize (Zea mays L.) and named root-ABA1. For this QTL, back-cross-derived lines (BDLs) homozygous either for the (+) or for the (−) allele increasing or decreasing, respectively, root size and leaf ABA concentration, were developed. This study was conducted to evaluate the QTL effects in various genetic backgrounds and at different water regimes. The (+/+) and (−/−) BDLs were crossed with five or 13 inbred tester lines of different origin, thus producing two sets of test-crosses that were evaluated in Italy and China, respectively. Testing was conducted under both well-watered and water-stressed conditions. In Italy, the test-crosses derived from (+/+) BDLs, as compared with those derived from (−/−) BDLs, showed, across both water regimes, higher leaf ABA concentration (on average 384 versus 351 ng g−1 DW) and lower root lodging (28.0 versus 52.5%), and lower grain yield under water-stressed conditions (4.88 versus 6.27 Mg ha−1). In China, where root lodging did not occur, the test-crosses derived from (+/+) BDLs were less productive at both water regimes (on average, 6.83 versus 7.49 Mg ha−1). The lower grain yield of the test-crosses derived from (+/+) BDLs was due to a lower number of ears per plant and to lower kernel weight. The results indicate that the (+) root-ABA1 allele confers not only a consistently lower susceptibility to root lodging but also a lower grain yield, especially when root lodging does not occur. — The study of surface deformation due to seismic activity is often made using dislocations with uniform slip and simple geometries. A better modeling of coseismic and postseismic surface displacements can be obtained by using dislocations with variable slip and nonregular shapes. This is consistent with the asperity model of fault surfaces, assuming a friction distribution on faults made of locked zones with much higher friction than surrounding zones. In this paper we consider the 1997–1998 Colfiorito seismic sequence. The coseismic surface displacements in the Colfiorito zone are used in order to infer the slip distribution on the fault surface at different stages of the sequence. The displacement field has been modeled varying the slip distribution on the fault, and comparing the deformation observed by SAR and GPS techniques with model results. The slip distribution is calculated by Monte Carlo simulations on a normal fault with the dip angle equal to 40°. A good approximation is obtained by using square asperity units of 1.5×1.5 km2. In the first stage, we employed a simplified model with uniform slip, in which each asperity unit is allowed to slip a constant amount or not to slip at all, and in the second stage, we evaluate the slip distribution in the dislocation area determined by the Monte Carlo inversion: in this case we allow unit cells to undergo different values of slip in order to refine the initial dislocation model. The results show that the 1997 seismic events of the sequence can be modeled by irregular dislocations, obtaining a good fit to the DInSAR and GPS observations. The model also confirms the results of previous studies by a different methodology, defining the distribution of asperities on the fault plane using the fault geometry, the geodetic data and the seismic moment of the 1997–1998 Colfiorito seismic sequence. Furthermore, the analysis of 1997 aftershocks in the seismogenic region shows a strong correlation between most events and the asperity distribution, which can be considered as an independent test of the validity of the model. A huge late-Quaternary landslide (about 2×106 m3) dammed the Colfiorito basin in central Italy. This landslide was responsible for the formation of the present saddle, which divides the basin from the Chienti river valley. Landslide damming caused persisting lacustrine conditions during the Late Pleistocene-Holocene. High-standing lacustrine episodes are evidenced by two terraces located close to the top of the landslide dam, one of which can be related to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). During this period, the landslide dam was probably overtopped by the imponded lake. Before and during the LGM, the area of the landslide dam was affected by alluvial deposition. The landslide-induced lacustrine environment has played a key role in the history of land use at Colfiorito. The presence of water close to a strategic area located at the divide between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian regions favored its frequentation and settlement during the Upper Palaeolithic (in particular Aurignacian-Early Gravettian), as shown by the numerous archaeological remains contained in the alluvial deposits close to the landslide accumulation. During the Iron Age, the lake represented a unique source of sustenance, as indicated by the presence of peri-lacustrine settlements. In contrast, the land use drastically changed during antiquity with the Roman domination of the region. The necessity to cultivate new lands and particularly the problem of providing a food supply for Rome are the causes of the drainage of the Colfiorito lake by means of a tunnel excavated through the landslide dam. Based on radiocarbon dating, the operation of the Roman tunnel ended during the 5th–7th centuries A.D. (dates related to the deposits filling the tunnel), but the continuation of agricultural vocations in the area did not fade, and a new tunnel, which operated until 2000, was built during the 15th century. Because of the damaged conditions of the 15th century hydraulic works, a third tunnel was built (between 1998 and 2000), which permits the drainage of the Colfiorito area and the continuation of the agricultural activities. Abstract: Paleoseismological investigations has been carried out along the causative fault of the Mw 6.1 2009 L''Aquila earthquake. We dug three trenches in two different sites on the Paganica fault to understand its Holocene kinematic behavior. Paleoseismological results show a minimum of three faulting events preceding the 2009 earthquake. The most recent recognized event occurred after 1420–1610A.D., tentatively attributed to the 1703 (February 2) seismic shock; a previous event happened between 1st–2nd century A.D. and 7th–9th century A.D., probably in the interval 4th–6th century A.D., while another identified previous event occurred prior to 1st–2nd century A.D. The observed minimum displacement per event varies from 0.25m to 0.50m consistent with a fault length of about 22–27km, from which we infer a maximum expected Mw 6.6–6.7. This implies that the Paganica fault may occasionally rupture during 2009-like seismic events as well as during larger earthquakes, activating contemporaneously to nearby active faults kinematically and structurally linked to the Paganica fault. More specifically, on the basis of our data and of recent paleoseismologic studies, we hypothesize a linkage of the investigated fault with the Upper Aterno Valley Fault system. In this perspective, the Paganica Fault can rupture as an independent fault segment with recurrence interval of about 3 hundreds of years and together with the Upper Aterno Valley Fault system with recurrence interval that varies between 1000 and 1500years. Abstract: Following the Fukushima power plants accident on the 11th March 2011, the radioactivity monitoring programme at the Italian ENEA research centres was activated in order to detect the possible new input of radionuclides through atmospheric transport and precipitation. Measurements of 131I and 134,137Cs were carried out on atmospheric particulate, atmospheric deposition, seawater and mussels and sheep milk. In the daily samples of air particulate, 131I was detectable between March 28 and April 12, with extremely low concentrations (<1 mBq m−3; the detection limit for 131I was ∼0.2 mBq m−3) while Cs isotopes were always below the detection limit (<0.2 mBq m−3). The two main episodes of 131I atmospheric deposition were registered in La Spezia research centre, around March 28 and April 15, reaching values of 17.8 ± 1.1 and 8.0 ± 2.5 Bq m−2 respectively; maximum values of 134Cs and 137Cs were 0.11 ± 0.03 and 0.17 ± 0.02 Bq m−2, respectively, detected in Brasimone research centre in April (reference date April 15). Mussels and seawater were collected in the Gulf of La Spezia: only mussels after the main 131I deposition, on March 28, contained a measurable, although very small, amount of 131I (0.18 ± 0.05 Bq kg−1, detection limit 131I = 0.03 Bq kg−1 wet weight – soft parts). The 131I was also detected in sheep milk in Rome (Casaccia research centre) until May 5, showing a maximum concentration of 4.9 ± 0.4 Bq L−1. Abstract: Among the causes of deep-seated gravitational slope deformations (DGSD), the most important is relief energy, which is closely related to the intensity of the active tectonic deformations, either at the regional scale or at the scale of a single active fault. We analyzed some examples of DGSD from the Eastern border of the Fucino basin, in the Central Apennines, where extensional tectonics has been active since the late Pliocene. Photogeological and field geomorphological analysis was performed to identify landforms typically associated with DGSD, such as counterslope scarps, double crests, trenches, and bulging slopes. These features are located on a mountain range at less than 1 km from the causative fault of the 1915 Avezzano earthquake. We used the SBAS Differential SAR Interferometry technique to measure the slow movements of the surface, and calculated differential vertical and horizontal ground velocities of 2–4 mm yr−1 during the period spanning from 1992 to 2001. The quantitative information on the kinematics of the deformation provided some inferences on the different processes responsible for the evolution of the observed DGSD. The displacement time series shows non-linear deformation trends at some locations, possibly correlated with a strong meteorological event. We speculate that DGSD in this area are normally subject to slow deformation, and that sudden slip along sliding surfaces (observed in excavations) may sporadically be triggered off by extreme meteorological or seismic events. Morphologic investigations along the Campo Felice (CF) fault (central Apennines, Italy) have been made in order to develop a procedure for the paleoseismological analysis of bedrock fault scarps. The CF fault has been responsible for the formation of an impressive limestone fault scarp. Geomorphologic work on the CF basin and related fault indicated that the scarp originated from tectonic fault displacements. Three morphologic units have been distinguished along the fault scarp and defined as morphosome M1 (lowest part of the scarp), M2 and M3 (the uppermost part). These units display different karstic features, which are the result of their different duration of exposure to weathering. Micromorphologic analyses focused on the morphosome M1, along which the CF fault plane is exposed for a height ranging between 4 and 7 m. These analyses were aimed at defining differently weathered bands located at various heights, and parallel to the fault scarp top and base. The presence of these bands suggests repeated fault movements. The exposed fault surface displays a low-grade biokarstic weathering due to the action of epilithic and endolithic organisms. The biokarst distribution is, however, inhomogeneous and conditioned by the presence of nourishing elements, moisture and by light intensity. An area preferentially affected by the biokarstic processes develops as a band at the bedrock–soil contact at the base of the scarp. Roughness and colour analyses were made to identify uplifted bands which previously formed at the bedrock–soil contact. The roughness analysis was made using a microroughness-meter along 20-cm long horizontal transects repeated each 20 cm of fault height for the entire morphosome M1, at various sites along the scarp. The roughness variance data, plotted vs. the fault height, failed to identify differently weathered bands of paleoseismological interest. This result is probably due to the complex distribution of biokarst along the investigated fault plane. More reliable results have been obtained by areal analysis of the variation of the colour rendering of the rocks exposed along the fault plane at different sites. Photographic images of large portions of fault surfaces have been processed with standard graphic computer programs. The variations of colour indicated the presence of bands at various heights along the fault plane. Two uplifted bands have been recognised at all the investigated sites suggesting two displacement events (E1 and E2). A preliminary chronological framework for these two events, the youngest of which affected the CF fault, can be derived from the paleoseismological data available for the southernmost branch of the regional fault system that includes the CF fault. According to these data, E1 may have occurred between 860 and 1300 AD, while E2 may have occurred at about 1900 BC. Work is in progress to define surface exposure ages of different parts of the fault plane by means of in situ produced cosmogenic 36Cl. This procedure will give further chronological constraints for the age of E1 and E2 and will also permit to test the validity of the micromorphologic analysis of bedrock fault scarps for paleoseismological aims. Background: An effective strategy to reduce perinatal mortality requires an active surveillance system. This includes monitoring cases, organizing multidisciplinary local audits, conducting Confidential Enquiries, identifying avoidable factors, and facilitating changes in the healthcare system. In 2017, the Italian Obstetric Surveillance System launched the SPItOSS pilot Perinatal Surveillance System. The aim of this paper is to describe the results of the SPItOSS Confidential Enquiries on perinatal deaths focusing on the emergent critical aspects in obstetric and neonatal care, as well as on the healthcare facilities organization., Methods: SPItOSS, a population-based surveillance system, collected and analysed incident perinatal deaths from July 2017 to June 2019 in three Regions encompassing 32.3% of Italian births. Cases were defined according to WHO definition as fetuses born dead ≥ 28 weeks of gestation and live newborn died within 7 days from birth. The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and related Health Problem-Perinatal Mortality was adopted for coding causes of death and contributing maternal and placenta-related conditions. Confidential Enquiries, prioritized according to perinatal deaths preventability, were conducted by expert committees at Regional and National level., Results: A total of 830 incident perinatal deaths were notified, with 58.3% classified as antepartum, 4.3% as intrapartum, and 37.3% as neonatal deaths. According to the SPItOSS protocol, Confidential Enquiries evaluated only the most preventable deaths, including 19 intrapartum and 70 neonatal deaths. Of these, 43.8% were assessed as unavoidable with appropriate care; 29.2% as unavoidable with improvable care, and 15.7% as avoidable due to inappropriate care. Most intrapartum deaths were attributed to intrauterine hypoxia, while neonatal deaths recognized a multifactorial aetiology. Different aspects of inappropriate care were highlighted, such as failure to recognise maternal or fetal problems before labour, delayed or inappropriate neonatal resuscitation, and poor or suboptimal neonatal monitoring., Conclusions: The SPItOSS Confidential Enquires provided insights for improving maternity and perinatal services. By targeting key areas of obstetric and neonatal care, the surveillance can generate recommendations and actions to prevent avoidable perinatal deaths., Competing Interests: Declarations. Objectives: to describe the results of a pilot population-based perinatal mortality surveillance system, with regards to stillbirths; to study maternal, obstetric, and foetal characteristics, evaluating risk factors and understanding causes., Design: a cross-sectional study was conducted on incident cases of stillbirths collected by the surveillance system from July 2017 to June 2019 in three Italian Regions (Lombardy, Tuscany, and Sicily)., Setting and Participants: data on stillbirths, resulting from the in-hospital multidisciplinary audits, organised using the Significant Event Audit methodology, were analysed. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) definitions, the project identified stillbirths as foetuses born dead >=28 weeks of gestation. The WHO International Classification of Diseases-Perinatal Mortality was used to categorise the causes of foetal death., Main Outcomes Measures: maternal characteristics, obstetric and foetal findings were investigated. Unadjusted relative risks and 95% confidence intervals were computed with respect to the background population. Finally, causes of death and contributing maternal conditions have been considered., Results: the maternity and neonatal units of the three participating Regions notified 520 stillbirths, of which 435 cases underwent to the multidisciplinary audit (83.7%); 40.0% of cases occurred in the gestational age range between 36 and 39 weeks. The risk of stillbirth was significantly increased in mothers with foreign citizenship (RR: 1.39; 95%CI: 1.13-1.71), multiple pregnancies (RR: 1.59; 95%CI 1.05-2.42), and pregnancies conceived with assisted reproductive technologies (RR: 2.15; 95%CI 1.45-3.19). The rate of congenital malformations was 6.0%. A diagnosis of foetal growth restriction was reported in 10.3% of cases, although the percentage of dead foetuses weighting <10° centile was at least twice in almost all gestational age periods. Post-mortem and placental histological examinations were carried out in more than 70% and more than 90% of cases, respectively., Conclusions: the implementation of a population-based surveillance system with high participation rate of maternity units and the use of universally accepted definitions could improve the identification of stillbirth avoidable risk factors and potentially modifiable predisposing maternal conditions, highlighting issues of perinatal assistance in need of improvement.

Skeletal traits as height (Ht) or bone mineral density (BMD) are strongly inherited. Low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5) and farnesyl diphosphonate synthase (FDPS) are candidate genes for bone phenotypes. From Bonturno study, we genotyped 570 healthy Caucasian women aged 20 to 50 years (yrs) for LRP5 rs4988321 (A/G) and rs3736228 (C/T) and FDPS rs2297480 (A/C) single nucleotide polymorphisms. Serum C-telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX), osteocalcin (OC), and N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (P1NP) were measured in BMD-evaluated subjects at lumbar spine (LS), total hip (TH) and femoral neck (FN) sites. LRP5 rs4988321 locus correlated with FN-BMD (P = 0.0230), while LRP5 rs3736228 genotypes differed in LS-BMD (P = 0.0428). When clustered by age, lower FN-BMD was detected in LRP5 GG (P = 0.030) subjects of 41 to 50 years but not in younger. Both LRP5 GG and CC genotypes showed higher age-adjusted values of OC, CTX and P1NP. Increased CTX values were in LRP5 GGCC subjects than in those having at least one LRP5 A plus T alleles (P = 0.0190). LRP5 CC, GG or GGCC subjects with at least one FDPS C allele showed higher levels of CTX and OC in 31 to 40 yrs or older subjects. Objective: To identify the risk factors associated with pregnancy failure in patients with APS treated with conventional therapy., Methods: A multicentre, case-control study was conducted to compare APS patients with successful and unsuccessful pregnancy outcomes. We retrospectively considered 410 pregnancies of women diagnosed with primary APS. The study focused on 57 unsuccessful pregnancies (considered the study population) and 57 successful pregnancies (considered the control population) matched for age and therapy. All the patients had been treated with conventional protocol treatments including low-dose aspirin and/or heparin. The clinical and laboratory features of the two groups of women diagnosed with APS were compared., Results: The independent risk factors for pregnancy failure were: (i) the presence of SLE or other autoimmune diseases [odds ratio (OR) 6.0; 95% CI 1.7, 20.8; P = 0.01]; (ii) history of both thrombosis and pregnancy morbidity (OR 12.1; 95% CI 1.3, 115.3; P = 0.03); and (iii) triple [Immunoglobulin (Ig) G/IgM aCLs plus IgG/IgM anti-β(2) glycoprotein I antibodies plus LA] aPL positivity (OR 4.1; 95% CI 1.0, 16.7; P = 0.05). APS patients diagnosed on the basis of a single positive test and/or history of pregnancy morbidity alone were generally found to have successful pregnancies., Conclusion: It would seem from these findings that the risk of pregnancy failure in APS women planning to conceive can be stratified on the basis of some specific clinical and laboratory features.

Surveys were carried out in 2006 and 2007 in Umbria (central Italy) to evaluate the presence of mycotoxigenic fungi and mycotoxins in maize grain sampled at harvest. Fusarium spp., were the most abundant species detected in maize kernels, followed by Aspergillus species of sections Flavi and Nigri and by Penicillium spp. Among Fusarium species, F. verticillioides was the most prevalent species, as detected by PCR directly on the kernels and on the fungi isolated from the kernels, followed by F. proliferatum and F. subglutinans. Fumonisins were the predominant mycotoxins with values, on average, of 4.3 and 5.7 mgkg(-1), in 2006 and 2007, respectively, with a maximum of 76.3 mgkg(-1) in the second year. Deoxynivalenol ranged from 0.2 to 3.98 mgkg(-1) in 2006 (average 1.04 mgkg(-1)) and from undetectable levels to 14 mgkg(-1) in 2007 (average 0.86 mgkg(-1)). Aflatoxins, analyzed only in 2007, averaged 26.3 μgkg(-1), with a maximum of 820 μgkg(-1). Zearalenone content was always very low. Results indicate that EU legal limits for these mycotoxins were rarely exceeded with low levels across most of the examined area, suggesting that this region could be considered suitable for the production of healthy maize., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Increased cancer rates have been documented in people residing in areas around Naples characterized by illegal dumping and incineration of waste., Hypothesis: Risk of cancer in dogs and cats is associated with waste management., Animals: Four hundred and fifty-three dogs and cats with cancer and 1,554 cancer-free animals., Methods: Hospital-based case-control study in Naples (low danger) and nearby cities having a history of illegal waste dumping (high danger). Odds ratio (OR) between high- and low-danger areas was calculated for all tumors and various malignancies in dogs and cats., Results: An increased risk for cancer development was identified in dogs but not in cats residing in high-danger areas (OR: 1.55; 95% confidence interval: 1.18-2.03; P < .01). A 2.39-fold increased risk of lymphoma (P < .01) accounted for the greater tumor frequency in dogs residing in high-danger areas. The risk of mast cell tumor and mammary cancer did not differ in dogs residing in high- or low-danger areas., Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Waste emission from illegal dumping sites increases cancer risk in dogs residing in high-danger areas. An increased prevalence of lymphoma has been previously recognized in humans living close to illegal waste dumps. Thus, epidemiological studies of spontaneous tumors in dogs might suggest a role for environmental factors in canine and human carcinogenesis and can predict health hazards for humans.

We report clinical and molecular findings in 14 patients with cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD), a well defined skeletal disorder with characteristic clinical findings and autosomal dominant inheritance. We identified ten heterozygous base changes in the RUNX2 gene, including six novel mutations [c.522insA, c.389G>A (W130X), c.662T>G (V221G), IVS2+T>A, c.1111&#95;1129del19, and c.873&#95;874delCA]. We did not establish a clear correlation between clinical features and genotype, the phenotypes of all patients analyzed falling within the range of variation described in CCD without an effect related to the length of the predicted protein. In two cases, however, a limb-girdle myopathy affecting the shoulder muscles was also identified. Eight unrelated Italian patients with the hyperornithinemia, hyperammonemia, and homocitrullinuria (HHH) syndrome were analyzed for mutations in the ORNT1 gene. Seven novel mutations were identified (Q89X, G27R, G190D, R275Q, c.861insG, c.164insA, and IVS5+1G-->A). Other previously described variants were a heterozygous deletion of a phenylalanine residue (F188del) in one allele and the R179X in two. The G27R mutation was carried by two patients. Analyses of ORNT1 mRNA in four patients showed that mutant alleles were stable and of the predicted size. Cilia-Associated Respiratory (CAR) bacillus is a filamentous bacterium that colonizes the ciliated epithelium of the respiratory tract of many animal species and that has been associated with chronic inflammatory lesions in naturally and experimentally infected rats, mice and rabbits. In the present study, the prevalence of CAR bacillus infection and histological lesions of the trachea in veal calf and adult cattle were investigated. Forty five healthy veal calves and 45 adult cattle, raised in 18 different herds were selected at slaughter. From each animal, a tracheal sample was processed for histology, stain-ed with the Warthin-Starry method to evaluate the presence of CAR bacillus, and with haematoxylin and eosin to evaluate the presence of inflammatory lesions. CAR bacillus was identified in 17 veal calves (37.7%) and in 7 adult cattle (15.5%). Inflammatory lesions were found in 42 veal calves (93.3%) and in 41 adult cattle (91.1%). Statistical analysis pointed out a significant correlation between the presence and number of CAR bacilli and the presence and number of lymphoid follicles (P = 0.0071) and the presence and severity of neutrophilic infiltrates (P = 0.0428). These results indicate that CAR bacillus infection is common in cattle and is correlated with tracheal inflammatory lesions.
