Earth flows are complex gravitational events characterised by a heterogeneous displacement pattern in terms of scale, style, and orientation. As a result, their monitoring, for both knowledge and emergency purposes, represents a relevant challenge in the field of engineering geology. This paper aims to assess the capabilities, peculiarities, and limitations of different remote sensing monitoring techniques through their application to the Pietrafitta earth flow (Southern Italy). The research compared and combined data collected during the main landslide reactivations by different ground-based remote sensors such as Robotic Total Station (R-TS), Terrestrial Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (T-InSAR), and Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS), with data being derived by satellite-based Digital Image Correlation (DIC) analysis. The comparison between R-TS and T-InSAR measurements showed that, despite their different spatial and temporal resolutions, the observed deformation trends remain approximately coherent. On the other hand, DIC analysis was able to detect a kinematic process, such as the expansion of the landslide channel, which was not detected by the other techniques used. The results suggest that, when faced with complex events, the use of a single monitoring technique may not be enough to fully observe and understand the processes taking place. The Benevento Province (southern Italy) has been historically affected by soil erosion and ground deformation (i.e. landslides; Revellino et alii, 2019), as testified by documents and reports which describe damage scenario, social effects, surveys and measures carried out. Revellino et alii (2010) highlighted as the landslide index, defined as the ratio of areas affected by landslides over total areas, reaches up to 90%. Earth flows make up about 46% of these landslides, involving structurally complex geologic formations and often responsible for damaging human infrastructures (e.g. roads and service lines; Guerriero et alii, 2016; Maresca et alii, 2022). As a result, the province has widespread problems in management of the landslide hazard, due to the activation (and reactivation) of phenomena connected to both rainfall and seismic events. In order to reconstruct state of activity maps for the Benevento Province, a multitemporal analysis of multiplatform satellite data was carried out, with a resolution of cells of 20×20 m. In particular, PSInSAR (ERS 1&2 for the time-span 1992-2000, ENVISAT for 2002-2010, and RADARSAT for 2003-2007) and ISBAS data (Sentinel-1 for 2017-2020), were first treated by a grid-based approach to uniform the PS data and subsequently, by a multiplatform approach defining weighted average velocity (VWA) maps on the base of the extent of the area with data availability. Finally, a multiplatform activity-matrix approach allowed the definition of landslide activity maps based on a velocity threshold of ± 3 mm/y, derived by VWA maps. Specifically, velocity threshold allowed to discriminate for each cell of the analyzed area i) stable cells (velocities between ± 3 mm/y), ii) unstable cells (velocities greater than ± 3 mm/y), iii) cells with no data (unclassified). The multiplatform activity-matrix approach at provincial scale was used to identify and analyze unstable area (hotspots), currently involved in active deformation processes. Among them, the Paupisi municipality (Benevento Province) was identified as critical for the involvement of built-up areas and infrastructures in landslide deformation processes. For that reason, Paupisi area was selected as study case and a detailed analysis of the PS distribution as well as reconstruction and evaluation of deformation trend were carried out. Geotourism is a form of nature-oriented tourism devoted to the knowledge and understanding of landscape forms and geological processes; flora and fauna and cultural, historical and human heritage. The great geological and morphological variability of Avellino Province, also called Irpinia, in southern Italy makes this province of particular interest for geotourists. Irpinia has a unique set of geosites, sites of cultural interest, archaeological sites and natural parks. Additionally, since ancient times, it has been a transit route between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas and, as in all countries of the Mediterranean area, it was dominated by different races, peoples and cultures that contributed to developing its cultural identity and heritage, including its food and wine. Indeed, some Irpinian products were already known and commercialised in Roman times, including wine and olive oil. On this basis, we propose a map showing the characteristics of Avellino Province, including sites of geological, historical-archaeological and cultural value. The map will contribute to a better understanding of this province from a geotourism perspective and might guide tourists through knowledge of Irpinia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Slope stability is influenced by a number of factors that modify the resisting/acting force ratio control landslide initiation and movement velocity. Among these, artificial vibrations have been identified as an important degrading factor for soil strength, but it is not fully clear if they can trigger or modulate movements of clay landslides. To contribute to a better understanding of the potential effect of vibrations on landslide movement, also in terms of boundary conditions, we analyzed monitoring data acquired at the toe of the Pietrafitta landslide in southern Italy. This landslide adjoins the SS87 national road that suffered periodic closure due to landslide activity and in April 2016 operates daytime only for risk mitigation purpose. This condition promoted a better identification of a potential cause-effect relation between traffic vibration and landslide movement. Results from data analysis and landslide modeling suggest that in condition of incipient movement, artificial vibrations, also of limited amplitude, are able to directly initiate clay landslide movement that due to the viscous nature of the involved material exhibit a specific displacement pattern that is not consistent with a sliding block model. The estimate of seismic site effects by experimental approaches is based on different assumptions aimed at simplifying the complex actual site conditions and related uncertainties. However, the reliability of the results can increase if the experimental data is focused on quite strong seismic sequences and the on-site acquisition of a large number of signals is deemed strategic for the assessment of the expected phenomena. Based on these considerations, the ground motion at the Red Zone sector of Amatrice hill, violently struck by the 2016–2017 Central Italy seismic sequence, was analyzed via an observational approach. A large set of weak motions (moment magnitudeMw 2.5–3.9) was analyzed in this study by means of standard (SSR) and horizontal to vertical (HVSR) spectral ratio techniques. The results from the experimental analysis of the site effects by using weak motion and noise signals show a significant amplification at the top of Amatrice hill with a remarkable polarization of the motion and changes in spectral shapes according to the topographic setting of the relief. On 15 October 2015, a storm-induced flood hit the central sector of Benevento Province (southern Italy) causing two deaths and severe damage to infrastructure, buildings and local agriculture. This area has a long history of similar events and since 1924 its major river segments have been monitored with several hydrometric stations. We used data from two of these stations and a LiDAR derived high-resolution topography to develop a flood hazard map. For map computation, we first derived a flood inundation map from topography. Subsequently we estimated the probability of exceedance of each specific fluvial stage from the combination of a Generalized Extreme Value and a Gamma fits of available hydrometric data. As boundary condition, we considered a reference scenario corresponding to an estimated 500 year flood. The Campanian Apennines are characterized by the presence of monocline ridges, mainly formed by limestone. During the periods of volcanic activity of the Somma-Vesuvius and Phlegrean Fields, the ridges were mantled with pyroclastic materials in varying thickness. The pyroclastics have been involved in destructive landslides both in historical time and in the recent past (1997, 1998, 1999). The landslides occur following intense and prolonged rainfalls. In some cases, landslides extended up to 4 km into the surrounding lowlands and reached towns, causing severe destruction and over 200 deaths. Generally, the landslides begin as small debris slides that develop into large, shallow debris avalanches or debris flows involving pyroclastic horizons and colluvial soils (0.5–2 m thick) on steep and vegetated slopes, often at the heads of gullies. During motion, the landslide materials eroded vegetation and soils from the slope, so that the moving material volume tended to increase. Then, proceeding towards and beyond the base of the slopes, the phenomena evolved into hyperconcentrated streamflow due to dilution by incorporating water. The results of motion analyses are described. An empirical rheological relationship was used including two principal terms that depend on the total normal stress and on the flow velocity. On this basis, the model has simulated the velocity and duration of debris avalanches and the distribution of the deposits. The selected areas were those of Sarno/Quindici and Cervinara, where a large amount of data is available both on the material properties and geomorphological setting. It was found that the majority of the cases at the two sites can be simulated successfully with only one specific pair of rheologic parameters. This provides the possibility for first-order predictions to be made of the motion of future landslides. The change of the Earth's climate and the increasing human action (e.g., increasing impervious areas) are influencing the recurrence and magnitude of flooding events and consequently the exposure of urban and rural communities. Under these conditions, flood hazard analysis needs to account for this change through the adoption of nonstationary approaches. Such methods, showing how flood hazard evolves over time, are able to support a long-term plan of adaptation in hazard changing perspective, reducing expected annual damage in flood prone areas. On this basis, in this paper a reevaluation of flood hazard in the Benevento province of southern Italy, is presented, providing a reduced complexity methodological framework for near future flood hazard prediction under nonstationary conditions. The proposed procedure uses multiple nonstationary probability models and a LiDAR-derived high-resolution inundation model to provide present and future flood scenarios in the form of hazard maps. Such maps are derived using a spatialization routine of stage probability across the inundation model that is able to work at different scales. The analysis indicates that, overall, (i) flood hazard is going to decrease in the next 30 years over the Benevento province and (ii) many areas of the Calore river floodplain are going to be subject to higher return level events. Consequently, many areas would require new guidelines of use as the hazard level decreases. Limitations of the analysis are related to the choice of the probability model and the parameter estimation approach. A further limit is that, currently, this method is not able to account for the presence of mitigation measurements. However, result validation indicates a very high accuracy of the proposed procedure with a matching degree, with a recently observed 225-years flood, estimated in 98%. On this basis, the proposed framework can be considered a very important approach in flood hazard estimation able to predict near future evolution of flood hazard as modulated by the ongoing climate change. This work aims at understanding the potential of ambient vibration monitoring in deriving information about material properties change related to landslide seasonal behaviour and resonance directivity in landslides. The case study is the Pietrafitta landslide in southern Italy, known for its effects on the SS87 National Road and for being influenced by artificial vibrations. The field experiment consisted in four two-day-long measurement cycles, completed between April and November 2016, by using two broad-band three components velocimetric stations: one station at the landslide's toe and a reference station outside the landslide. Obtained data were analysed in terms of root mean square, spectral amplitude, horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio and directionality effects. Results indicated the existence of amplitude daily variations due to vehicular traffic for both the stations, and long-time variations in the amplitudes and frequency content at the landslide site. Polarization and directional resonance showed a daily variation, with the most coherent results in the range of 20° - 60° at the night hours, in the absence of traffic. This azimuthal trend was transverse to the sliding direction. The most marked resonance effect was found in the April recordings. The observed horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio curves changed over time, due to variation in shear stiffness related to seasonal consolidation. Results from the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio inversion suggested a decrease from April to October 2016 in the Vp / Vs ratio, and in the velocity contrast at the base of the sediments consistent with common decrease in landslide activity due to summer drought. • We monitored ambient vibrations at an active landslide in Southern Italy. • We applied HVSR inversion, time-domain polarization, and HVSR directivity methods. • Resonance directivity shows a dominant direction transverse to the landslide sliding. • We attributed the HVSR time variations to variations in the materials properties. Deep-seated landslides are important agents of relief shaping and can have substantial impact on human settlements. Many examples are present in the Campania region of southern Italy, where the association of complex lithostratigraphic and structural geologic conditions might have effect on landslide initiation and evolution. On this basis and considering the effect that the deep-seated landslide have had in the last years on the urban settlement, the Buonalbergo landslide was analyzed in terms of decadal kinematics and geological control and insights in prospective evolution were provided. The analysis of data derived by geological and landslide field mapping, settlement damage analysis, Persistent Differential Interferometry SAR data analysis, and Finite Elements stability analysis revealed i) the approximately constant rate movement of the landslide in the last three decades with a consistent enlargement of its area, ii) the presence of a large overturned anticline, characterized by a complex lithostratigraphic arrangement and multiple discontinuity sets, iii) the presence of faults responsible for morphological depression development, iv) a rotational mechanism characterizing the upper sector of the landslide and the ongoing translational sliding of blocks located at its toe and v) the effect of potential pore pressure scenarios on prospective kinematics (i.e. single to multiple stages creep) with the observed constant rate movement potentially related to a pore pressure at the landslide base ranging between 300 and 400 kPa. Result interpretation suggests i) the role of the structural and lithostratigraphic setting of the slope as predisposing factor for landslide development, ii) the potential of fold-related fabric in controlling landslide geometry and fragmentation, iii) the possible occurrence of multiple landslide events affecting the slope affected by the deep-seated landslide and iv) the potential of hydrologic conditions in modulating landslide velocity and evolution toward slope failure. The relevance of results is related to the representativeness of the Buonalbergo landslide as common process in the Apennine context in terms of potential long-term morphologic evolution of the slope and the existence of many landslides that develop in similar geological conditions driving sediment production and inducing persistent topographic changes in mountainsides. Hazard mapping is essential for risk assessment and mitigation measurement design in flood prone areas. In Europe, long-term fluvial stage data, acquired since the 18th century, represent a resource of fundamental importance in this perspective, especially where rivers monitoring is completed by multiple stations distributed along the course. In these conditions, a major challenge is represented by the possibility of incorporating multiple probability models, representative of river dynamics at different distance from the mouth, in flood hazard estimation over so large areas. In this paper, we propose a new procedure of hazard estimation based on LiDAR derived flood inundation model and multiple hydrometric time series that, using a specifically developed algorithm/code of interpolation/assignation of multiple probability models, has the potential to work at local to national scale providing reliable estimation also in presence of urban areas. We applied the developed procedure and associated algorithm/code to a selected study area in southern Italy, recently hit by a destructive flood event, and quantitatively evaluate model performance. Confidence interval computation provides an overview of uncertainty related to flood magnitude estimation by extreme value analysis, indicating a substantial uncertainty related to 500 years flood magnitude estimation. Sensitivity analysis indicates a high degree of robustness of the developed procedure. Result validation through comparison against the observed 2015 flood event indicates that the method has the potential to support flood hazard analysis at regional to national scale. Limits of method application are related to the basic assumption of stationarity of hydrologic time series that might be considered too "simplicistic" in a changing climate also related to the limited length of some time series that only in few cases have no discontinuities. The absence of propagation modelling as part of the estimation procedure might be considered as an additional limit since in complex topographic and hydrological conditions it might provide a better evaluation of flood hazard. However, comparison of the 500 years flood derived from our procedure and 500 years flood scenarios derived by 2D hydraulic simulations indicate the capabilities of our procedure in identifying area floodable by specific events with only local overestimation that generally increase safety in human life protection perspective. This confirms the potential of considering multiple probability models distributed along the river course in flood hazard estimation perspective and indicate that our procedure can be a valid alternative to simulation based flood hazard estimation procedures.
