We study the evolution of inequality in income composition in terms of capital and labor income in Italy between 1989 and 2016. We document a rise in the share of capital income accruing to the bottom of the distribution, while the top of the distribution increases its share of labor income. This implies a falling degree of income composition inequality in the period considered and a weaker relationship between the functional and personal distribution of income in Italy. This result is robust to various specifications of self‐employment income; nonetheless, it hinges crucially on the treatment of rental incomes. While the dynamics of imputed rents has brought about a more equitable distribution of capital incomes across the income distribution, that of actual rents has led to higher concentration of capital incomes at the top in the decade preceding the outbreak of the financial crisis. The aim of this paper is to study at what extent current knowledge on traditional plant uses is still alive on the island of Procida (Campania, southern Italy). Information were collected using interviews on 48 persons native or residents in the island since decades. For each recorded species, scientific name, vernacular name (when available), chorotype, parts used, folk uses, and way of preparation are described. Data was collected on a total number of 92 plant species, belonging to 87 genera and 48 families. In total, 1283 use reports have been recorded: the highest number of use reports has been documented for medicinal uses, followed by food, domestic, cosmetic and veterinary uses. Regarding medicinal uses, the majority of plants are used in the treatment of skin and gastrointestinal diseases and for general health benefits. Soil CO 2 flux and 222 Rn activity measurements may positively contribute to the geochemical monitoring of active volcanoes. The influence of several environmental parameters on the gas signals has been substantially demonstrated. Therefore, the implementation of tools capable of removing (or minimising) the contribution of the atmospheric effects from the acquired time series is a challenge in volcano surveillance. Here, we present 4 years-long continuous monitoring (from April 2007 to September 2011) of radon activity and soil CO 2 flux collected on the NE flank of Stromboli volcano. Both gases record higher emissions during fall–winter (up to 2700 Bq * m − 3 for radon and 750 g m − 2 day − 1 for CO 2 ) than during spring–summer seasons. Short-time variations on 222 Rn activity are modulated by changes in soil humidity (rainfall), and changes in soil CO 2 flux that may be ascribed to variations in wind speed and direction. The spectral analyses reveal diurnal and semi-diurnal cycles on both gases, outlining that atmospheric variations are capable to modify the gas release rate from the soil. The long-term soil CO 2 flux shows a slow decreasing trend, not visible in 222 Rn activity, suggesting a possible difference in the source depth of the of the gases, CO 2 being deeper and likely related to degassing at depth of the magma batch involved in the February–April 2007 effusive eruption. To minimise the effect of the environmental parameters on the 222 Rn concentrations and soil CO 2 fluxes, two different statistical treatments were applied: the Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and the Principal Component Regression (PCR). These approaches allow to quantify the weight of each environmental factor on the two gas species and show a strong influence of some parameters on the gas transfer processes through soils. The residual values of radon and CO 2 flux, i.e. the values obtained after correction for the environmental influence, were then compared with the eruptive episodes that occurred at Stromboli during the analysed time span (2007–2011) but no clear correlations emerge between soil gas release and volcanic activity. This is probably due to i ) the distal location of the monitoring stations with respect to the active craters and to ii ) the fact that during the investigated period no major eruptive phenomena (paroxysmal explosion, flank eruption) occurred. Comparison of MLR and PCR methods in time-series analysis indicates that MLR can be more easily applied to real time data processing in monitoring of open conduit active volcanoes (like Stromboli) where the transition to an eruptive phase may occur in relatively short times. Billari F. C., Rosina A., Ranaldi R. and Romano M. C. Young adults living apart and together (LAT) with parents: a three-level analysis of the Italian case, Regional Studies. This paper introduces the notion of living apart together (LAT) with one's parents as a status in the transition to adulthood. LAT with parents is defined as the situation in which young adults who reside with their parents spend a significant amount of that time living outside the parental household. Young adults who LAT with parents are described and the determinants of LAT are analysed with reference to Italy. The relevance of this phenomenon is documented for Italy, a country with one of the highest share of young adults cohabiting with parents and with fundamental subnational differences both on higher education provision and in the labour market situation. Official survey and census data are analysed and a multi-level statistical model is used to analyse the determinants of the LAT choice, with individuals, households and municipalities as levels. We reviewed the clinico-pathological features of 73 primary cutaneous B-cell lymphomas (PCBCLs), diagnosed in 10 years in Marche region in central Italy, which included 16 marginal zone lymphomas (MZL), 33 follicle centre lymphomas (FCL) and 24 diffuse large B cell lymphomas (DLBCL). We also investigated the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi in tissues by polymerase chain reaction. Differences in age, sex, location site, response to therapy, disease recurrence and 5-year disease-specific survival were observed among the 3 histological groups. Specific DNA sequences of Borrelia burgdorferi were not detected in any of the 73 cases of PCBCL. We conclude that PCBCLs in Marche region behave according to the literature data and do not seem to be associated with Borrelia burgdorferi. Although groundwater is a strategic source in volcanic islands, most hydrogeochemical research on this topic has been focused on volcanic activity monitoring, overlooking general hydrogeological aspects. The same applies to one of the most studied volcanoes in the world, Stromboli Island (Italy). Here, we provide a hydrogeological scheme of its coastal aquifer, retrieving inferences about its potential use as a water supply source and for optimizing monitoring protocols for volcanic surveillance. Starting from the hydrogeochemical literature background, we analyzed new data, acquired both for volcano monitoring purposes and during specific surveys. Among these, there were saturated hydraulic conductivity measurements of selected rock samples and precise determinations of water table elevations based on GNSS surveys of wells. We identified a ubiquitous thin lens of brackish water floating on seawater and composed of a variable mixing of marine and meteoric components; inlets of hydrothermal fluids to the aquifer are basically gases, mainly CO2. Based on its hydrogeochemical character, the coastal aquifer of Stromboli could be used as a water supply source after desalinization by reverse osmosis, while the wells located far from the seashore are the most interesting for volcano monitoring, because they are less disturbed by the shallow geochemical noise. The southeastern zone of Rome city is located at the northwest periphery of the quiescent Colli Albano volcano. This zone is characterized by the presence of a shallow (depth ~ 45–50 m) gas pressurized aquifer that produces gas blowouts when it is reached by wells. Three gas blowouts occurred in this zone in 2003, 2008 (another one was discovered during the present study) and 2016 and in this paper we describe in detail the latter two. The emitted gas consists mostly of CO 2 (>90 vol%) and contains a low but significant quantity of H 2 S (0.3–0.5 vol%) and it has the highest helium isotopic R/Ra value (1.90) of all Colli Albani natural gas discharges, suggesting its likely magmatic origin. In both the described gas blowouts, dozens of families had to be prudentially evacuated from their houses and the emitted gas killed some animals. We monitored, continuously or by discrete surveys, the soil CO 2 flux, the indoor and outdoor air concentration of CO 2 and H 2 S, the environmental parameters and we checked whether the cementation of the gas releasing wells had been effective. In both cases, the upper part of the wells had been partly closed with an inflating packer to avoid free gas dispersion in atmosphere; as a consequence gas diffused laterally from the wells into the permeable surficial soil up to reach the nearest houses creating hazardous indoor conditions, particularly for CO 2 in some basements. During the well cementation operations, and in one case because of the packer rupture, gas and nebulized water were freely discharged from the wells into the atmosphere, and high air CO 2 and H 2 S concentrations were found. Fortunately gas was quickly dispersed by strong winds. The positive results obtained in all the studied gas blowouts demonstrate that our applied geochemistry approach represents a model of intervention useful for the assessment of the hazard associated to accidental endogenous gas release. Gas hazard was evaluated at Lavinio-Tor Caldara, the southernmost gas-discharging zone of the quiescent Albani Hills volcano in central Italy. Also this zone, like the other gas discharges of this volcanic complex, is located above a structural high of the buried Mesozoic carbonate basement, which represents the main reservoir for gas rising from depth. All extensional faults affecting the carbonates are leaking pathways along which gas may rise to the surface creating hazardous conditions. Gas is dominated by CO 2 (>90 vol%) and the second component at Lavinio-Tor Caldara is H 2 S that displays the highest content (4.0–6.3 vol%) of all gas manifestations of the Rome region. This H 2 S enrichment corresponds to a marked decrease in 3He/4He (R/Ra) isotopic ratio suggesting that gas was contaminated in an upper crustal environment. The main gas discharge occurs at the natural reserve of Tor Caldara, in zones where past sulphur mining excavations removed the surficial impervious cover, or along a ditch. Comparison of the results of four soil CO 2 flux surveys carried out in 2005–2018 at Miniera Grande within Tor Caldara, indicates that the highest soil CO 2 release occurs shortly after local earthquakes. Continuous monitoring of CO 2 and H 2 S air concentration and of wind speed has been carried out for four months in twelve anomalous gas realising sites of Tor Caldara. Results indicate that only H 2 S reaches lethal concentration (>250 ppm) near the soil in no wind nights, explaining the presence of small dead animals. At Lavinio, the main soil gas release occurs near old water wells that likely produced a gas blowout during drilling. A total release of over 20 tons/day from 2.93 km2 of gas of endogenous origin, has been estimated for the Lavinio-Tor Caldara area by a detailed soil CO 2 flux survey (2572 measurement points over an area of 3.65 km2). The main structural lineaments of the area have N-S and W-E directions, but also NE-SW and NW-SE directions are well represented. Abstract: Gas hazard was evaluated in the three most important cold gas emission zones on the flanks of the quiescent Colli Albani volcano. These zones are located above structural highs of the buried carbonate basement which represents the main regional aquifer and the main reservoir for gas rising from depth. All extensional faults affecting the limestone reservoir represent leaking pathways along which gas rises to the surface and locally accumulates in shallow permeable horizons forming pressurized pockets that may produce gas blowout when reached by wells. The gas, mainly composed of CO2 (>90vol.%), contains appreciable quantities of H2S (0.35–6vol.%), and both represent a potentially high local hazard. Both gases are denser than air and accumulate near ground where they may reach hazardous concentrations, and lethal accidents frequently occur to animals watering at local ponds. In order to evaluate the rate of degassing and the related hazard, CO2 and H2S diffuse soil flux surveys have been repeatedly carried out using an accumulation chamber. The viscous gas flux of some important discrete emissions has been evaluated and the CO2 and H2S air concentration measured by portable devices and by Tunable Diode Laser profiles. The minimum potential lethal concentration of the two gases (250ppm for H2S and 8vol.% for CO2) is 320times higher for CO2, whereas the CO2/H2S concentration ratio in the emitted natural gas is significantly lower (15–159). This explains why H2S reaches hazardous, even lethal, concentrations more frequently than CO2. A relevant hazard exists for both gases in the depressed zones (channels, excavations) particularly in the non-windy early hours of the day. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: La Fossa crater on Vulcano Island is quiescent since 1890. Periodically it undergoes “crises” characterized by marked increase of temperature (T), gas output and concentration of magmatic components in the crater fumaroles (T may exceed 600°C). During these crises, which so far did not lead to any eruptive reactivation, the diffuse CO2 soil degassing also increases and in December 2005 an anomalous CO2 flux of 1350tons/day was estimated by 1588 measurements over a surface of 1.66km2 extending from La Fossa crater to the inhabited zone of Vulcano Porto. The crater area and two other anomalously degassing sites (Levante Beach and Palizzi) have been periodically investigated from December 2004 to August 2010 for diffuse CO2 soil flux. They show a marked variation with time of the degassing rate, with synchronous maxima in December 2005. Carbon dioxide soil flux and environmental parameters have been also continuously monitored for over one year by an automatic station at Vulcano Porto. In order to assess the hazard of the endogenous gas emissions, CO2 and H2S air concentrations have been measured by Tunable Diode Laser profiles near the fumaroles of the crater rim and of the Levante Beach area, where also the viscous gas flux has been estimated. In addition, CO2 air concentration has been measured both indoor and outdoor in an inhabited sector of Vulcano Porto. Results show that in some sites usually frequented by tourists there is a dangerous H2S air concentration and CO2 exceeds the hazardous thresholds in some Vulcano houses. Abstract: The main CO2 diffuse degassing structures (DDS) of Stromboli were identified through extensive CO2 soil flux investigations, with 3600 measurements by an accumulation chamber. These DDS extend from the nearby crater area of Pizzo sopra la Fossa (Pizzo) to the coastal area of Pizzillo and are all associated with NE–SW deep fractures, corresponding to the main volcano-tectonic axis of the island, some of which produced flank eruptions in prehistoric times. In each of the four main DDS, a target area was defined covering the zone with the highest CO2 soil flux, where periodic CO2 flux surveys were carried out. The highest CO2 release was observed during the 2007 eruption and high flux values were recorded at both Pizzo and Pizzillo also in moments of high prolonged Strombolian activity (high number of daily explosions observed from the craters and/or high frequency of VLP seismic events). In order to better investigate the rate of diffuse CO2 degassing in relation to volcanic activity, an automatic station hourly measuring CO2 soil flux and environmental parameters (atmospheric T, P and humidity, soil moisture and T, wind speed and direction) was installed in March 2007 at Nel Cannestrà and Rina Grande DDS. Unusual positive correlations were found at Nel Cannestrà between gas flux and SE wind speed and at Rina Grande between gas flux and soil moisture, which are explained by the local conditions, which favour respectively a Venturi effect and the increase in gas flux toward the station during rains. Ten months of continuous recording confirmed the strong influence of environmental conditions on the CO2 soil flux, but statistical data processing made it possible to recognize clear positive anomalies expressing high rates of deep magmatic CO2 degassing. Comparison with seismic data indicates that high CO2 fluxes are apparently correlated with increases in volcanic activity, such as higher explosion frequency and VLP amplitude. Particularly promising is the temporal coincidence of highest recorded flux anomaly with a major explosion that occurred during the observation period. Data confirm that the two continuously monitored DDS are preferentially deep degassing sites, where anomalous increases of CO2 release could represent a geochemical precursor for either high energy explosions from the craters or the opening of flank eruptive fissures that might threaten the village of Stromboli. Abstract: A borehole drilled at Fiumicino (Rome) down to only 27 m depth in a zone where no gas emission at the surface was known, caused a gas blowout from a pressurized gas pocket confined beneath a clay cover. Gas slowly diffused from the borehole within superficial permeable sand. Seven persons living in three ground floor flats of a near building had to be hospitalized due to CO2 exposure. All the houses in the proximity were evacuated. At the request of the Fire Brigade two additional boreholes were drilled nearby, hoping that this could rapidly exhaust the gas stored underground. To the contrary the soil gas flux near houses increased and indoor CO2 air concentration rapidly rose to lethal values (15 to 30   vol.%). As a remediation we suggested to restore the continuity of the impervious gas cover by squeezing quick-setting cement into the formation through new boreholes to be drilled near the existing ones. Although the first cement squeeze reduced drastically the CO2 soil flux and indoor concentration, six additional squeezes had to be carried out in order to lower the gas emission below the gas hazard threshold. The gas was mostly made of CO2 (98   vol.%) with minor N2 and CH4. Its chemical and isotopic composition (δ 13CCO2 =− 1.55; 3He/4He=0.314   Ra) is similar to that of the gas manifestations of Mts. Sabatini and Alban Hills volcanic areas. Though being somewhat contaminated by crustal and shallow organic volatiles, these gases likely have a component originated in the mantle, that beneath the volcanic Roman Comagmatic Province is probably deeply contaminated with crustal material. The Fiumicino gas blowout indicates that the area of Central Italy characterized by strong CO2 degassing extends westerly to include the Tyrrhenian coast. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Assessment of a shallow low-enthalpy geothermal resource within the city of Rome. • Evaluation by ERT profiles of top depth (∼40 m) and thickness (∼20 m) of the aquifer. • Geothermal water has high salinity and dissolved CO 2 and a constant T of 17.5 °C. • This Rome sector has a high diffuse soil CO 2 output of 87.77 t*day−1 from 3 km2. • Water heat exchangers and geothermal heat pump appear convenient for exploitation. Rome Capital City is located in a high heat flux area of central Italy, suitable for low-enthalpy geothermal exploitation. In the central-northern part of the city, near Tor di Quinto hippodrome close to Tiber River, a wide undeveloped area occurs, which is a possible future urban development site. We present the results of a geochemical and geophysical study aimed at assessing the presence in this zone of a low-enthalpy geothermal aquifer and at evaluating its depth, thickness and the physico-chemical characteristics of the geothermal water. Furthermore the natural CO 2 output of this zone has been investigated. A soil CO 2 flux survey with 551 measurements over a surface of 3.09 km2 revealed the presence of parallel NW-SE trending positive flux anomalies. The total CO 2 output was estimated to 87.77 t*day−1, most of which (85%) of endogenous or mixed origin. An Electrical Resistivity Tomography survey, consisting of five parallel 355 m long and 100 m spaced profiles, allowed the reconstruction of the stratigraphy of the underground sediments, which are fluvial deposits of the near Tiber River. The geothermal water is hosted in a low-resistivity layer, corresponding to the Tiber base gravels, which are here 20 m thick and whose top is 40 m below the surface. The water has a nearly constant temperature of 17.5 °C, a relatively high salinity and an appreciable content in dissolved gas. This low-enthalpy resource is suitable for direct uses, e.g. individual and district heating/cooling, sanitary hot water, spa facilities for swimming and bathing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
