The spread of biodistricts (BDs) in Italy covers approximately 30% of the national territory. Their emergence is driven by specific local reasons and broader motivations, such as a favorable political climate and improved access to health and local food for all citizens. The rapid development of BDs has sparked significant interest from national and regional legislation, as well as from scientific and gray literature. However, there remain ongoing debates regarding the criteria for defining and identifying BD, the appropriate governance models to adopt, and the scope of their functions, particularly in relation to market and supply chain development. A three-round Delphi study was conducted to address these controversial issues and achieve expert consensus on the characteristics and potential direction for BDs as policy actors aligned with their mission. Beginning with a set of 12 open questions, the final round of the survey focused on the definition of BDs, their resilience in times of crisis, and their market strategies. According to the respondents, the specificity of BDs lies more in their functions than in their structural and organizational characteristics (such as the concentration of organic farming or the presence of a structured supply chain). Nevertheless, these structural elements must be pursued as objectives to enable meaningful territorial actions by leveraging local social capital. In this context, fostering interaction between producers and consumers and meeting local demand should be central to BD strategy. However, this does not preclude the possibility of entering national and international markets, especially when it supports the enhancement of local supply chains. Introduction: Hemp is a crop cultivated in Europe since ancient times, with a variety of purposes and products. Despite being known for its positive environmental effects on ecosystems, the impacts of hemp-based food products have not been sufficiently investigated yet. This paper contributed to deepen the knowledge of the hemp industry by focusing on the potential environmental impact of the cultivation phase (under three different agronomic practices in Italy: organic outdoor and conventional outdoor, and indoor) and the production of selected hemp-based goods (seed oil and flour for food purposes and flowers for therapeutic uses). Methods: The impact was quantified utilizing the life cycle assessment within different impact categories, such as carbon footprint (CF), eutrophication (EP), acidification (AP), and water footprint (WF). For a carbon offset assessment, the carbon storage capability (i.e., the carbon fixed in crop residues left in the field) of hemp was also investigated through the guidelines provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Results and Discussion: The cultivation phase contributed to a CF that ranged from 1.2 (organic outdoor) to 374 (indoor) kg per kg of grains (conventional outdoor). These results were in line with the literature. Sensitivity scenarios based on hotspot analysis were also presented for CF mitigation for each kind of cultivation. On the other hand, the ability of hemp to sequester carbon in the soil due to crop residues left in the field (i.e., carbon storage) was evaluated (−2.7 kg CO2 (ha year)−1 ), showing that the CF was fully compensated (−0.27 kg CO2 (ha year)−1 for conventional outdoor and −1.07 kg CO2 (ha year)−1 for organic outdoor). Regarding hemp-based products, only dried flowers showed a negative balance (−0.99 kg CO2 per kg dry flower), while hemp oil and flour reported 31.79 kg CO2 per kg flour) when carbon storage was accounted. The results support the idea that the production chain can be sustainable and carbonneutral only when all the different parts of the plant (flowers, seeds, fibers, leaves, and all residues) were used to manufacture durable goods according to the framework of the circular economy. The BEST (Beerkan Estimation of Soil Transfer parameters) method was used to compare the hydraulic properties of the soils in two Long-term Agroecosystem Experiments (LTAEs) located at the FIELDLAB experimental site of the University of Perugia (central Italy). The LTAE "NewSmoca" consists of a biennial maize-durum wheat crop rotation under integrated low-input cropping systems with (i) inversion soil tillage (INT) or (ii) no-tillage (INT+) and (iii) under an organic cropping system with inversion soil tillage (ORG). ORG and INT+ involve the use of autumn-sown cover crops (before the maize cycle). Pure stand durum wheat was grown in INT and INT+, while a faba bean–wheat temporary intercropping was implemented in ORG. The LTAE "Crop Rotation" consists of different crop rotations and residue management, a continuous soft winter wheat and biennial rotations of soft winter wheat with maize or faba bean. Each rotation is combined with two modes of crop residue management: removal or burial. For INT+, despite the high-bulk density (>1.50 g/cm3), we found that conductivity, sorptivity and available water are comparable to those of INT, probably due to a more structured and efficient micropore system. ORG soils show the highest conductivity, sorptivity and available water content values, probably due to the recent spring tillage occurring in the wheat inter-row with the faba bean incorporation into the soil. For LTAE Rotation, the residue burial seems to influence the capacity-based indicators positively. However, the differences in the removal treatment are minor, and this could be due to the inversion soil tillage, which limits the progressive accumulation of organic matter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Allium ampeloprasum var. holmense (elephant garlic) is traditionally cultivated in "Val di Chiana", an area between Umbria and Tuscany regions of Central Italy, under the name "Aglione della Valdichiana". This product has recently increased in importance, becoming a key economic resource for local farmers. In 2019, phytosanitary problems of elephant garlic cloves ready for transplanting emerged in this cultivation area. Symptom/sign observations and fungal isolations were performed for cloves divided into four components (tunic, basal plate, reserve tissue and shoot) from six farms in the "Val di Chiana" area. Isolates obtained were identified, using partial β-tubulin (BenA) and calmodulin (CaM) or translation elongation factor 1α (tef1α) genes sequences, as belonging to Penicillium [P. allii (95%), P. citrinum (4%), P. brevicompactum (1%)] or Fusarium [F. oxysporum (81%), F. proliferatum (19%)]. Fusarium spp. were mainly associated with clove tunics and basal plates, while Penicillium spp. with basal plates, reserve tissues and shoots. Fungi often also developed from asymptomatic components, but a correlation was found between isolated pathogens and disease symptoms. Pathogenicity and virulence towards elephant garlic cloves were verified for a representative isolate of each identified species, and Penicillium allii was the most virulent. Strategies to control Fusarium and Penicillium spp. on cloves were assessed, including chemicals, a biocontrol agent, surface sterilization and heat treatment. Among these, treatments with Patriot Gold® (active ingredient [a.i.] Trichoderma asperellum TV1, approved in organic farming on crops similar to elephant garlic), or Signum® (a.i. boscalid + pyraclostrobin, approved for Integrated Pest Management systems on crops similar to elephant garlic), were effective in simultaneous reduction of Penicillium spp. and Fusarium spp. Transplanting of asymptomatic cloves combined with the use of the above treatments showed promising effects for pathogens control, and to assist elephant garlic crop establishment. Durum wheat is one of the main crops in the Mediterranean region, which is characterized as the hotspot of climate change, with large year-to-year weather fluctuations. Although chemical input reduction in agriculture is strongly demanded, as well as healthy food, there is still a lack of stable and high-yielding crop varieties specifically adapted for organic conditions. This study evaluates the performance of fifteen durum wheat varieties in terms of suitability for organic farming in central Italy and assesses the impact of the genotype–environment interaction (GEI) on productive and quality traits. Variety performance was evaluated in field experiments over four successive seasons. In addition, a genotypic diversity analysis of 38 microsatellites associated with traits important for organic farming was performed. The AMMI (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) stability analysis revealed that the best and most stable genotype regarding quality traits, such as thousand-kernel weight, protein content, and test weight was the ancient variety, Senatore Cappelli. The most stable and high yield was determined for the Fuego, Iride, and Mv-Pelsodur genotypes. Moreover, SSR markers that could be used for plant breeding, targeting organic farming systems based on molecular markers and GEI results, were identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Agricultural intensification and land-use patterns impact biodiversity and reduce ecosystem functions. Organic farming is often seen as a more biodiversity friendly way of farming. However, not all organic farming is equally supportive for biodiversity, structural diversity of the farms has a great impact and the often high intertwinement of organic and conventional farmland causes spill-over problems. Objective: On organic farmland in central Italy, we analysed butterfly diversity and community structures in different land-use categories across a heterogeneous landscape. We aim to analyse the impact of the different land-use structures such as hedges and forest edges on this farmland, as well as the influence of adjoining conventionally farmed areas. Methods: We studied butterflies on organic farmland including olive and hazelnut plantations, as well as meadows and fallow land, surrounded by hedges and forests. Hereby we considered the effects of land-use on the studied site and the adjoining land, e.g., semi-natural habitats (as hedges or forest edges), organic or conventional farmland. We counted butterflies along line transects and recorded habitat parameters for each transect. All encountered butterflies were classified according their ecological demands, behaviour, and life-history. Results: We found highest mean butterfly species richness in fallow land and lowest in hazelnut plantations. Species community structures differed hardly between plantations and meadows, but considerably compared to fallow land. Butterfly abundances are reduced for olive plantations adjacent to agricultural fields treated with pesticides, compared to such surrounded by organic fields. Habitat para-meters such as the number of flowering plant species and shade impact butterfly diversity and abundance. Forest edges producing considerable shadow to the transects had a significantly negative effect on diversity and abundance, while the influence of hedges was positive. Conclusions: Based on our findings, we conclude that also organic farmland has different degrees of biodiversity depending on a variety of land-use pattern. In particular, habitat heterogeneity and a high diversity of flowers positively influence butterfly diversity. The intensive mixing of organic and conventional agriculture must be seen critical for conservation as negative effects might spill over to organic fields, but might be compensable by landscape structures like hedges. In Italy, from 2000 to 2010, 58% of farms in mountain areas were abandoned leading to a 33% decrease in available land for agriculture. This research aimed to restore value and competitiveness to the Apennine area, by proposing a balanced and sustainable agriculture model. Following the needs of farmers, underutilised cereals were selected as the ideal genetic material for the study and development of short local food supply chains. The field experiments were carried out in two organic farms located in the Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy). During two growing seasons, seven wheat genotypes, two wheat evolutionary populations and one einkorn mixture were cultivated under organic farming management. Results related to functional traits are presented along with the main agronomic and technological parameters that were determined. Several nutritional properties are included. Mean yield and stability performance over environments for each genotype were explored using the "Genotype and Genotype by Environment biplot" elaboration. Considering yield performances, "Benco" was closer to the 'ideal' genotype. All the results were evaluated with the farmers, who expressed their own preferences from field observations. The right coupling between environment and genotypes can discourage the abandonment of hilly and mountainous farms by enhancing the economic competitiveness of agriculture in these regions. This paper aims to provide an evaluation of the environmental and economic aspects of strawberry cultivation in the Campania and Basilicata regions of Southern Italy, and to consider the effects on strawberry productivity following compost tea (CT) application. Eight strawberry-growing systems were tested. To this end, compost tea production and characterization were described; a quantitative analysis of the strawberries' yield was performed, and environmental impact per ha and per kg of strawberries was estimated using the life cycle assessment methodology. To compare the profitability of the systems analyzed, the gross profit of the farmers was calculated, also considering the social cost of pollution. One of the two organic systems analyzed, using solarization for soil disinfestation, biological fight for pest control, and corrugated boxes as packaging recycled at the end-of-life, was the most sustainable system with carbon credits. At the same time, organic crops are not always the most sustainable and profitable systems if significant irrigation and fertigation interventions are carried out, as in another organic system analyzed. Plastic materials and zinc structures were the most impacting items in almost all analyzed systems. The use of a CT with an elevated number of beneficial microorganisms with a high suppressive action allowed to obtain a good increase of the yield, in both systems that used it, and to have a higher gross profit. Alien species represent one of the causes of biodiversity loss, both in natural and anthropic environments. This study contributes to the assessment of alien species impact on Western Po Plain rice field cultivations, referring to different agricultural management practices and ecological traits. Flora and vegetation were studied (the latter through the phytosociological method), and α-biodiversity was estimated through Shannon and Simpson Indices. Results highlighted a significant floristic contingent depletion and increase in therophyte and alien components, compared to pre-existing studies (1950s); higher α-biodiversity levels in organic farms, compared to conventional farms, but also a higher invasive alien species percentage. The high deterioration of the territorial–landscape context appears to play a major role in shaping these patterns. Some of these alien species are particularly aggressive (e.g., Murdannia keisak), as confirmed by two experimental rice field plots which were left unharvested, continuously flooded, making it possible to assess the competitiveness between weed species. The detected weed vegetation is attributed to the Oryzo sativae-Echinochloetum cruris-galli association, already described for Southern Europe, with two different ecological and floristic variants. Future studies, by including other sites and framing their territorial–landscape context, may further complement this overview on the alien species distribution and behavior in rice fields, hence facilitating their strategic management. Organic farming nowadays is held up as a model of sustainability; however, this is not always an economic advantage for farmers due to the reduced yields compared to the conventional regime. The aim of the study is therefore to provide an environmental and economic analysis of the innovative organic model proposed by the Bresov project to assess its sustainability. The study is therefore based on a Life Cycle Assessment methodology and the economic evaluation, through the calculation of the gross income of innovative organic and conventional broccoli cultivation in Sicily. The impact categories analysed reported a 60–100% reduction in impact in the case of innovative organic compared to conventional. From an economic point of view, although there is a minimal reduction in yield in organic compared to conventional, there is an increase in production costs that translates into a reduction in the gross income of approximately 61%. These gaps are filled when the organic product is granted a premium price and thanks to aid from the Common Agricultural Policy. The innovative organic approach, characterised by new products and soil management methods, confirms it as an alternative to conventional. The concept of sustainable development has been attracting the attention of the scientific and professional community for decades. Various researches and papers focused on the concept of sustainability, exploring it through the prism of the economic, ecological and social subsystem. In this paper, the authors focus on agriculture and its sustainability. Starting from the assumption that organic farming is a sustainable system production, the authors turn to institutional support, trying to find a link between EU agricultural policy (CAP) and the growth of areas in organic agriculture. The research showed that this kind of support system failed to play the role that was intended for it and did not lead to mass acceptance of organic agriculture everywhere. Authors on the example of Denmark, Germany and Italy show the extent to which state support has influenced the expansion of areas under this system. Also, the comparison with the US agricultural policy leads to the conclusion that support policies for organic production constructed on a one-dimensional focus of payments per unit area will not lead to the expected results in terms of further progress and development of the organic sector. The use of suitable species and varieties in organic cropping systems is essential for improving resource use efficiency, biodiversity, and agroecosystem resilience. Within the SIC-OLEAT project, a 2-year field trial was carried out in two contrasting environments of Central Italy, with the aim to hypothesize a production path for linseed inclusion within organic farming. The effects of location, genotype and sowing date on crop phenology, agronomic performances, and qualitative traits were evaluated. Generally, linseed showed good agronomic traits that make it suitable to be introduced in organic systems. Autumn sowing coupled with milder and wetter conditions seemed to be more favorable for linseed cultivation, allowing a higher seed yield (2.1 vs. 1.3 Mg ha−1) and oil content (47.2 vs. 45.2%). From multivariate analysis, the superior genotypes were Kaolin > Szafir > Galaad, and among these Kaolin had the highest production stability. On the contrary, Libra was the lowest performing one and the most unstable. These findings underline the importance of a site-specific approach for choosing the most suitable variety, since both sowing date and location are meteoclimatic-related factors. Definitively, our results demonstrated that linseed might be a valuable autumn alternative for organic cropping system diversification, contributing to the local production of vegetable oils and proteins. Pelargonic acid is a non-selective post-emergence contact bio-herbicide which is registered both for cropping and non-cropping uses in several countries. Dose–response curves on the efficacy of pelargonic acid against common weeds in Mediterranean areas are not available. Dose–response curves of pelargonic acid efficacy against summer and winter annual weeds were evaluated in two field experiments (winter exp. in 2019 and summer exp. in 2020) in central Italy. Pelargonic acid was applied at five doses (1.4, 2.7, 5.4, 10.9 and 21.8 kg a.i. ha−1). Data on weed density, weed dry weight, and weed ground cover were used to calculate the efficacy of pelargonic acid against winter and summer weeds. Data were subjected to a non-linear regression analysis using the logistic dose–response model. Dose of pelargonic acid required to obtain 50%, 70%, 90% and 95% weed control against each weed species (ED50, ED70, ED90 and ED95) were estimated. ED values allowed us to classify winter and summer weeds with respect to their susceptibility to pelargonic acid (ED50 values in kg ha−1 are reported in parenthesis): Kickxia spuria (2.6) (more susceptible) > Heliotropium europaeum (3.0) > Echinochloa crus-galli (3.4) > Solanum nigrum (3.6) > Stachys annua (5.3) > Papaver rhoeas (6.5) > Veronica hederifolia (10.3) > Amaranthus retroflexus (11.4) > Matricaria chamomilla (11.6) > Portulaca oleracea (18.7) > Lolium multiflorum (>21.8) (less susceptible). These findings will allow for the optimization of weed control by pelargonic acid and its use in weed management strategies, both in organic and sustainable cropping systems, under different environmental conditions. Agricultural management has a great influence on biodiversity and its services in agroecosystems. In Europe, a relevant proportion of biodiversity is dependent on low-input agriculture. To assess the effects of agricultural management on biodiversity, in this study we surveyed the communities of arable plants, diurnal flying insects, and pollinators in three conventional and in two organic fields of a traditional Elephant garlic (Allium ampeloprasum L.) crop of the Valdichiana area, in Tuscany (central Italy). The sampling was carried out twice during the season: in spring, during crop growing, and in summer, after crop harvesting. We assessed the effects of the different agricultural management on the richness and composition (species occurrence and abundance) of the three communities using univariate and multivariate analyses. Concerning our specific case study, only plant species richness was significantly higher in organic fields (15.7 ± 2.7 species per plot), compared to conventional ones (5.4 ± 2.3 species per plot). Regarding community composition, only pollinators showed a marginally significant difference between conventional and organic fields. Conversely, the effect of specific fields significantly explained differences in composition of all the investigated groups (plants, total insects, and pollinators). The results suggest that, in our case study, the emerged differences in diversity of the investigated communities were mainly attributable to environmental and management factors related to single fields, more than to organic or conventional farming. Such evidence could be partly due to the very local scale of the study, to the heterogeneity of the surveyed fields, and to the reduced number of surveyed fields. The high demand for wine in Europe has increased the impact of viticulture on the environment. In line with European objectives, more sustainable agronomic practices have spread as an alternative to traditional management. This study aimed to compare, in a vineyard of Pinot blanc and Rhine Riesling in northeast Italy, the integrated agronomic practices (INT) with two types of organic management (ORG1—cattle manure and ORG2—green manure), in terms of production, grape quality, pest susceptibility, and soil nutrient availability. The results, after the fifth, sixth, and seventh year of testing, showed that organic management obtained a yield and vegetative features comparable to INT. Grape quality also did not show considerable overall differences between the theses in the must properties, despite the higher total sugar content and lower yeast available in ORG1. In the three-year period, the management of downy mildew, powdery mildew, and rot, as well as the soil fertilization, with the products available in organic farming proved to be comparable to the INT method. The application of cattle manure contributed by enriching the soil in K and P, while a balanced green manure mix has proven to be the best agronomic practice in terms of the release of mineral N during the phenological stages of greatest need of the vine. Wood distillate (WD) is an environmentally safe bio-based product stimulating plant growth and yield and allowed in Italy in organic farming. To the best of our knowledge, there are no studies on the effects of WD on spontaneous plants growing among crops, including their functional traits such as biomass. To test such effects, we carried out a lab experiment on artificially reconstructed arable plant communities composed of five species of conservation interest, which are specialist winter cereal crops: Bromus secalinus L., Centaurea cyanus L., Lathyrus aphaca L., Legousia speculum-veneris (L.) Chaix, and Scandix pecten-veneris L. After sowing 45 pots under controlled conditions, we applied WD at three concentrations (0%, 0.2%, and 0.5%) six times over 7 weeks. The number of emerged plants in each pot was counted every two weeks. Finally, we harvested all plants and measured the fresh and dry above-ground weight of each species in each pot. The resulting data were analyzed by Permutational Analysis of Variance. The application of 0.2% and 0.5% WD modified the community composition after two weeks, but such differences later disappeared. Both 0.2% and 0.5% WD had a positive effect on the dry weight of S. pecten-veneris and a negative effect on that of L. speculum-veneris. Moreover, 0.2% and 0.5% WD increased seedling emergence in L. aphaca, and 0.5% WD increased seedling emergence in S. pecten-veneris. Both 0.2% and 0.5% WD enhanced seedling emergence in the entire community. We suggest that the use of WD at low concentrations in winter cereals may be a sustainable agricultural practice that benefits crops without harming the associated plant diversity. Agricultural management affects soil fertility through the frequency and type of agronomic practices such as mechanical operations, type and rate of fertilizers, crop rotations, and residue management. This study evaluated the evolution of soil chemical properties (pH; electrical conductivity; soil organic carbon, SOC; total Kjeldahl nitrogen, TKN; and available phosphorous, PO4-P) over time in two farming systems, organically and conventionally managed, after 5 and 14 years after the establishment of both systems, in northeastern Italy. SOC content remained stable in the conventional farming system, but slightly decreased in the organic farming system, despite inputs from organic amendments. In contrast, soil TKN remained consistently higher in the organic farming system. The PO4-P increased over time, in both farming systems. Moreover, we observed that an increase of 1% in soil clay content resulted in increases of 0.0534 and 0.0053 g kg–1 in SOC and TKN, respectively. In conclusion, our results indicate that organic management does not have an advantage over conventional management in terms of soil organic matter accumulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The agricultural scenario of the upcoming decades will face major challenges for the increased and sustainable agricultural production and the optimization of the efficiency of water and fertilizer inputs. Considering the current and foreseen water scarcity in several marginal and arid areas and the need for a more sustainable farming production, the selection and development of cultivars suitable to grow under low-input conditions is an urgent need. In this study, we assayed 42 tomato genotypes for thirty-two morpho-physiological and agronomic traits related to plant, fruit, and root characteristics under standard (control) and no-nitrogen fertilization or water deficit (30% of the amount given to non-stressed trials) treatments in two sites (environments), which corresponded to organic farms located in Italy and Spain. A broad range of variation was found for all traits, with significant differences between the applied treatments and the cultivation sites. Dissection of genotypic (G), environmental (E), and treatment (T) factors revealed that the three main factors were highly significant for many traits, although G was the main source of variation in most cases. G × E interactions were also important, while G × T and E × T were less relevant. Only fruit weight and blossom end rot were highly significant for the triple interaction (G × E × T). Reduction of water supply significantly increased the soluble solid content in both locations, whereas both nitrogen and water stress led to a general decrease in fruit weight and total yield. Despite so, several accessions exhibited better performances than the control when cultivated under stress. Among the accessions evaluated, hybrids were promising in terms of yield performance, while overall landraces and heirlooms exhibited a better quality. This suggests the possibility of exploiting both the variation within ancient varieties and the heterosis for yield of hybrids to select and breed new varieties with better adaptation to organic farming conditions, both under optimal and suboptimal conditions. The results shed light on the strategies to develop novel varieties for organic farming, giving hints into the management of inputs to adopt for a more sustainable tomato cultivation. Recently, Erasmoneura vulnerata , firstly reported in Italy, has emerged in other European viticulture areas, indicating a potential spread of its associated issues across Europe. The most effective control strategies against E. vulnerata are those based on chemical insecticides, which can negatively impact non-target species. Organic control strategies mostly rely on pyrethrum, but its effectiveness seems limited, given the outbreaks in organic managed vineyards in North-eastern Italy. The control of E. vulnerata in organic farms must therefore be improved. In this study large scale trials were planned in several organically managed vineyards located in North-eastern Italy. We evaluated kaolin's impact on E. vulnerata and the effect on beneficial arthropods, particularly Acari Phytoseiidae and the egg parasitoids Hymenoptera Mymaridae. A decline in the leafhopper nymph population was observed in three out of four vineyards, while adults in two out of four. Nitrogen fertilizers are essential inputs into modern agriculture, however the use of large amounts of mineral fertilizers in Italy caused, in the last three decades, severe environmental impacts such as eutrophication of waters and soils, loss of biodiversity, and drinking water pollution including human health risks. To date, regulatory instruments, such as the Nitrate Directive applied to reduce and manage mineral fertilizers showed scarce results in terms of environmental protection. Meanwhile the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) subsidy scheme continues to encourage intensive agriculture and the national fiscal policy includes VAT reduction to 4% for mineral fertilizers. The aim of this paper is to propose a reform of direct and indirect fertilizers' subsidies considering multiple fiscal options to adjust and eliminate some harmful incentives. The elimination of direct subsides shows the ability to generate a financial effect of €252.54 million per year. As for indirect subsidies for chemical fertilizers, their fiscal remodelling by bringing back the VAT rate from 4% to 22%, has the ability to generate revenues for the state of €597.40 million. The proposed subsides reform has the capacity to generate a significant revenue for the state amounting to €849.94 million every year, which may be used for investments in organic farming and sustainable agriculture practices. Fertilizers stand at the base of current agricultural practices, providing the nutrient sustainment required for growing plants. Most fertilizers are synthetic chemicals, whose exploitation at very high levels poses a risk to cultivated land and the whole environment. They have several drawbacks including soil degradation, water pollution, and human food safety. Currently, the urgent need to counterbalance these negative environmental impacts has opened the way for the use of natural and renewable products that may help to restore soil structure, microorganism communities, nutrient elements, and, in some cases, to positively enhance carbon soil sequestration. Here, we endeavor to reinforce the vision that effective strategies designed to mitigate negative anthropic and climate change impacts should combine, in appropriate proportions, solutions addressed to a lower and less energy intensive production of chemicals and to a more inclusive exploitation of renewable natural products as biological soil amendments. After drawing an overview of the agricultural energy demand and consumption of fertilizers in Europe in the last few years (with a particular focus on Italy), this narrative review will deal with the current and prospective use of compost, biochar, and neem cake, which are suitable natural products with well-known potential and still-to-be-discovered features, to benefit sustainable agriculture and be adopted as circular economic solutions. Worldwide, organic farming is being promoted as one of the main alternatives to intensive conventional farming. However, the benefits of organic agriculture are still controversial and need to be tested across wide environmental gradients. Here, we carried out an observational study to test how agronomic practices, pest management, environmental impact and yield of conventional and organic vineyards changed along wide climatic and landscape gradients across Italy. We used a block design with 38 pairs of conventional and organic vineyards across Italy. Most agronomic practices did not differ between conventional and organic vineyards. By contrast, landscape composition and climate were strong predictors of management in both systems. First, increasing semi-natural areas around the vineyards reduced pesticide pressure and related environmental impacts, but was also associated with lower yield. Second, irrespective of the farming system, a warm and dry climate was associated with reduced fungicide pressure. Conventional farming had a yield gain of 40% in cold and wet climate compared to organic but the yield gap disappeared in the warmest regions. In both farming systems, we observed a large variability in management practices that was mainly explained by climate and landscape composition. This large variability should be considered when evaluating the benefits and drawbacks of different farming systems under contrasting environmental contexts. The agriculture sustainability assessment is a difficult issue for the coexistence of conflicting objectives and the multidimensionality of the performances. The environmental, economic and social pillars need to be simultaneously considered in an assessment to evaluate potential synergies and trade-offs of the agricultural processes within and among the attributes of the dimensions in both implemented systems (ex-post analysis) and potential options (ex-ante analysis). Among several sustainability assessment methods, tools based on multi-criteria analysis (MCA) are increasingly adopted in evaluating sustainability in agriculture. The aim of this work was to present the MCA tool developed in the framework of the BioDurum project for the sustainability assessment of organic farms located in southern Italy and characterised by durum wheat-based crop rotations. The tool was entirely designed through a participatory process and it was realised using the open-source DEXi software that have demonstrated to be particularly suitable for creating qualitative multi-criterial hierarchic models with the engage of stakeholders. The hierarchic structure of BioDurum_MCA tool was resulted composed by 64 indicators and 45 aggregated attributes articulated in three branches representing the agro-environment, economic, and social sustainability pillars. The articulated structure of the tool reflected the complexity and the sustainability issues and priorities expressed by the involved stakeholders. The tool was tested in four Italian organic farms presenting different agro-environmental and socio-economic patterns for their ex-post evaluations and in three different ex-ante production systems identified in compliance with the Italian regulation concerning the requirements of the rotations to be implemented in organic farming. The results highlighted the well discriminatory power of the tool. The best overall sustainability scores were reached in both ex-post and ex-ante analysis by the well diversified cereal farming systems with processed products sold through short supply chain mechanisms. BioDurum_MCA has proved to be a feasible tool to identify strengths and weaknesses of organic durum wheat-based production systems. Its adoption can support the definition of specific interventions for the sector in the Italian Strategic National Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy. Further improvements in the threshold classes of some indicators by using the tool in a wider number of Italian durum wheat based organic farms will increase model sensitivity and reliability of the results. Despite the widespread growth of organic farming in Europe, the behavior of organic food markets differs among countries. Thus, in some countries such as Italy there is a great imbalance between production and consumption, causing part of the production to go to foreign markets. This situation is evident in olive oil, an emblematic product in the Italian agricultural sector. In this context, the development of internal demand is a priority. However, in order to design effective marketing strategies that contribute to such development, it is necessary to know the consumer's behavior. Under the hypothesis that the main reason for consumers to buy is altruistic (associated with the environment, ecology, animal welfare or rural and local development), the aim of this study was to know the main motivations of the organic olive oil consumer. The response to this objective was based on the Means-End Theory and for the analysis the "Hard laddering" technique was used, applied to a sample of 25 subjects. The results showed that health is the ultimate goal that motivates the purchase of organic olive oil, and that selfish motivations prevail over altruistic ones in the decision to buy or consume this type of food. This study was aimed to investigate the quality at harvest and during storage of organically and conventionally grown 'Italia' grapes, collected from 2 different locations in Southern Italy. Four vineyards were chosen in order to have an organic and a conventional farm in each location. Before harvest, six plants per vineyard were randomly selected and considered as treatment replicate. Three bunches were harvested and labelled from each plant. In laboratory each bunch was weighed and thirty berries per bunch were detached and used for initial determination which included morphological (berry weight and dimension, peel thickness) and physical (berry color and firmness) attributes, maturity indices (respiration rate, soluble solids content and titratable acidity), and nutritional composition (phenol content, antioxidant activity, sugar and organic acid composition, ascorbic acid content). Then, the bunches from each replicate were kept in individual 15L jars at 0°C and connected to a humidified air flow throughout the whole experiment. After 7 and 14 days of storage, respiration rate, weight loss, physical and nutritional attributes were also monitored on 20 berries per bunch. Location and agricultural practices affected to a different extent several grapes quality attributes, both at harvest and during storage. Maturity stage, sugar content and berry color were significantly affected by the location, while antioxidantrelated compounds were significantly higher in organic grapes. Plant production and bunch weight were significantly higher for conventionally grown grapes, which also received the highest evaluation of external appearance, in terms of stalk dehydration and berry general aspect. Differences among conventional and organic grapes were maintained, for each location, during storage at 0°C. Conventional grapes maintained a higher visual quality during storage, resulting after 14 days below the limit of marketability (score 3) but above the edibility limit (score 2); whereas in one location organic grapes were judged not edible. Results showed a higher nutritional value in grapes obtained with the organic farming system although in terms of visual quality, storability and yield, conventional fruit had a better performance. Plant breeding programmes frequently face the dilemma whether to breed for wide or specific adaptation. This is especially true for forage crop breeding, whose genetic resources may largely include landraces that are adapted to specific growing conditions. This study aimed to (1) investigate the extent and pattern of genotype × location (GL) interaction for biomass yield of recent lucerne cultivars across organically-managed sites of Northern and Central Italy and its relationship with cultivar selection environments, (2) provide an empirical assessment of yield gains derived from specific-adaptation and wide-adaptation breeding strategies, and (3) identify top-performing cultivars for different geographic regions. Cultivar adaptive responses, modelled by additive main effects and multiplicative interaction analysis, displayed wide GL interaction of cross-over type across test sites that reflected remarkably the geographic area and/or the growing conditions (particularly for extent of summer drought) of their selection environment. GL interaction patterns suggested three putative subregions to breed for specific adaptation, namely, Northern Italy north of the Po river, Northern Italy south of the Po river, and Central Italy. Growing specifically-adapted cultivars provided an estimated average advantage of 12.9% across subregions relative to the best-performing widely-adapted cultivar. Yield gains of recent top-performing material over an historical, widely-adapted cultivar indicated that selection for specific adaptation would provide 3.2-fold greater yield gain averaged across subregions, and 3.4-fold greater yield gain over the target region when weighting yield gains on the putative proportion of the target region of each subregion, compared with selection for wide adaptation. The knowledge of farmers' perception about the value of natural resources in agricultural management should have a central role in the orientation of decision-making processes in the rural policy. The final goal of such knowledge is to involve the population in the management of the territory with a bottom-up approach for a sustainable use of natural resources. Taking as case study the agricultural district of Western Sicily (Italy), which is one of the most important agricultural areas of Europe and is affected by soil degradation processes, our study pursued the following objectives: 1) to measure the adoption of the soil conservation practices (SCP) promoted by the Region inside the Rural Development Programs, with respect to some personal and farm features; 2) to find out the relationship between the personal and farm characteristics and the perceived environmental, aesthetic, productive, and management advantages, deriving from the adoption of SCP. The analysis was carried out using a 'multiple choice' answer questionnaire, administered to 125 farmers. Univariate statistics, Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA), and Chi-square test were used. Minimum tillage resulted the most adopted among the SCP not included inside Rural Development Program at the study time, while organic manuring the most adopted among SCP included inside Rural Development Program. The interviewed farmers revealed an inclination to perceive the production benefits (increased yield, and crop quality) and management benefits (production costs reduction, and working time reduction), stronger than the environmental and aesthetic ones. Farmers perceiving management advantages also perceived production benefits. Similarly, farmers perceiving environmental advantages also perceived aesthetic benefits. Effective profitability resulted the main efficient stimulus to the adoption of SCP, much larger than farmers' ecological attitudes, or the presence of subsidies. MCA and Chi-square test indicated that the farm size had the strongest influence on the choice of the SCP, and on the type of perceived advantages. In a two-year field experiment undertaken in Central Italy, different agro-ecological service crops (ASCs), terminated by the no-till roller crimper technology before organic melon production (Cucumis melo L.), were evaluated by assessing soil-plant N dynamics, weed management and crop performance, and by comparing with a tilled control without ASC. The ASCs (Poaceae, i.e. rye, barley, wheat, spelt and their mixture), were characterised in terms of aboveground biomass, N uptake, C : N ratio and degradation rate. During the melon growth cycle, soil mineral N (SMN), weed density and biomass were measured and the design of trial included weeded and unweeded plots. The yield and concentrations of soluble solids of the melon was measured. The ASC mulches differed in their N supply capacity and degradation rate. Rye and spelt were the best in terms of weed control, with approximately 80% lower weed density and weed biomass for either rye or spelt compared with the control. Wheat was the least effective against weeds, but it enhanced SMN. Melon yields were similar in plots with spelt and rye, weeded and unweeded treatments, but were reduced in the unweeded control (−58.5%) and barley treatment (−41.2%), compared with the respective weeded treatments. The low melon yield in the plots with rye suggested a negative allelopathic rye-melon interaction. Organic farming is increasingly promoted and supported at several levels for its capability of producing safe food and public goods. It can give an important contribution to attenuating the environmental pressure generated by conventional agriculture. This paper analyses possible determinants of the spatial distribution of organic farms in a rural region of Italy, characterised by several environmental issues. Towards this aim, a quasi-Poisson hierarchical generalised linear model with mixed effects is adopted. Results indicate that there is spatial correlation and that the distribution of organic farming is related to socio-economic, environmental and political factors. In particular, they show that public support could have favoured the spreading of organic farming where there are more problems of erosion but far from the areas where there is intensive agriculture. Abstract The paper describes the results of a specific LCA based analysis of the production of olive oil in the region of Calabria, in southern Italy. The goal of the study is to assess the energy and environmental impacts of different scenarios involving conventional and organic cultivations, plains and hills cultivations and involving different operating techniques. The study also aims at assessing the share of each life cycle step on the total of energy and environmental impacts. The functional unit chosen for the comparative analysis is a glass bottle of 0.75 L of extra virgin olive oil. A "from cradle to gate" perspective was chosen. The analysis was developed according to the LCA standards of the ISO 14040 series. The analysis is based on a field analysis developed in the last years in the province of Reggio Calabria between more than 50 enterprises and stakeholders of the field, representative of the whole Calabria region and of most southern Italy. The data used for the development of mass and energy balances are related to the years 2013–2015. The results clarify that for all indicators that the first part of the life cycle – from the production, including the growth of the olive plant to the full production stage – is the most relevant, variable between 80.6% share in the case of the particulate matter indicator to the 99.64% in the case of land use (Hill – Biological agriculture scenario). Relevant differences can be also traced for each specific indicator among all scenarios; high impacts are traced for the agricultural stages among all scenarios (70% −90% in all indicators) with high impacts caused by fertilizers. Among the transformation stages the bottle production is one of the most relevant sources of life cycle energy uses and environmental impacts (80–90%). Working on feed production and feeding strategies is one of the key ways of mitigating dairy impacts and of increasing dairy efficiency and the nutritional quality of milk, all of which are priorities for global dairy sector stakeholders. Feed production, both on farm and off-farm, is one of the main contributors to dairy farm greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and it is known that the adopted feeding strategies influence farm nutrient balance, nutrient losses to the environment, and milk fatty acid profile. This study has been aimed at improving farm efficiency, environmental sustainability, and milk nutritional quality by acting on the management of the cropping system, and by promoting the on-farm production of feeds of high nutritional quality and high fiber digestibility in order to improve the self-sufficiency of metabolizable energy (ME) and protein (CP) for animal feeding. A multi-year study was conducted to analyze the shift in cropping system management on an organic farm and on a conventional dairy farm, considered as a "lighthouses", and which were part of a Living Lab. Two 3-year pre-change periods (PRE) and two 3-year post-change periods (POST) with 2 years of transition were considered. The main actions performed on the management of the forage system involved changes in the crop destination, in the harvest schedule and in the conservation methods. All the data necessary to determine the dry matter (DM) yield, the forage quality, in terms of crude protein (CP), the metabolizable energy (ME), the nitrogen balance, and the carbon footprint of the two farms were measured or collected on farm. One kg of fat and protein corrected milk (FPCM) was used as a functional unit. In the POST periods, the milk production intensity (t FPCM/ha) improved and the ME and CP self-sufficiency of the heard increased on both farms. Both farms showed a 9.8% reduction of the Carbon Footprint (CF), and a reduction in the nitrogen surplus at the farm level. The amounts of C18:3 n-3 and n-3 fatty acids increased on both farms in the POST period. The purpose of our research is to develop an integrated sustainability score (ISS) choosing the farm level as system’s boundaries and developing a methodology, based on a geometric mean algorithm, which is negatively affected by the internal imbalance of the agroecosystem. The first step is to identify and calculate the indicators of systems and sub-systems to assess the agro-ecological and socioeconomic dimensions of sustainability. The second step is the selection, weighting and integration of indicators that permit the calculation of the ISS ranging from 0 to 1. The farm sustainability score is categorized into three levels: weak, intermediate and strong. This methodology has been verified on a stockless organic farming system case study of 12 farms in Italy. Results show that most of the farms reached intermediate levels of sustainability but there are significant differences on ISS scores within the study group. Agro-ecological and socioeconomic dimension play a different role in highlighting the coexistence of different models of sustainability. A further development of the present methodology should include an in-depth analysis of the social dimension of sustainability and integrate an assessment procedure to formulate improved management practices that will help farmers to find win-win solutions that decrease the contrast between environmental and economic sustainability. The Vercelli district is one of the most technologically advanced rice cultivation areas in the world, but the sector is causing serious environmental problems. This study aimed to acquire information on the ecological impact during conversion from conventional to organic farming, using the nematode community as an indicator of soil quality. An organic farming system managed with a 5-year crop rotation, based on rice (4-years) and soybean (1-year), was compared, during the fourth and fifth year after conversion, with conventional and integrated farming systems, both based on monoculture of rice. The relationship between soil biology and the type of farming system was explored by examining the nematode community, assessing maturity, plant parasitic, basal, enrichment, structure, channel indices and diversity-weighted abundance. No significant differences in total soil organic C, total N and C/N ratio were found between the management systems. Total nematode abundance was not strongly affected by the conversion, but the response of the nematodes to change varied with the trophic groups, year by year. The conversion from conventional to organic farming represented a disturbance factor. The introduction of the soybean crop determined a marked change in nematode composition; the persistent nematode population was only 20%, while the colonizer reached 80%. The indices showed that the nematode community varied between the farming system; in both years maturity index was lower in organic than in other management systems. Abstract: Direct sales are a widespread and important typology of the so‐called alternative food networks. They can take two basic forms: consumers going to buy agricultural products at the farm (on‐farm sales) and farmers selling their products in urban areas. We investigate the territorial distribution of direct sales practices (on‐farm and off‐farm) in Piedmont (Italy) and we assess the main determinants of these choices via probit models, separately for on‐farm and off‐farm sales. The explanatory variables comprise structural characteristics of the farms, type of farming, characteristics of the operators and of their products, and the proximity to urban and commercial areas. The most important factor affecting these choices is the type of farming (TF). The effect of other variables differs according to the TF. Conditional on it, other significant variables are generally farm location, organic farming and, especially for on‐farm direct sales, the complementarity with agro‐tourism and recreational activities. The present study aimed at characterising the flavour composition of apple cultivars grown in the Northeast Italy through different cultivation methods, by combining Head Space-Solid Phase Micro Extraction/Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS) analysis of volatile fraction with chemometric tools for class modeling. In order to represent the overall production in the target area, the investigation included 42 apples varieties consisting of ancient, non-native and new hybrid cultivars grown in Friuli Venezia Giulia and Alto Adige-South Tyrol, respectively. Moreover, apple samples from both conventional and organic agricultural practices were considered. Overall 118 volatile compounds were identified in the samples and Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) was used to classify apples based on their different geographical origin or growing conditions. Models highlighted good classification results both in calibration (over 91%) and cross-validation (over 87%), enabling to obtain a good separation between apple categories with high prediction accuracy (over 90%). In addition, the Variable Importance in Projection (VIP) scores of the PLS-DA models were calculated, allowing to identify a reduced number of volatiles (e.g., ethanol, ethyl acetate, isobutyl acetate, propyl propanoate, 1-hexanol, d -limonene, (Z)-2-hexen-1-ol acetate and others) which are relevant for the discrimination of different apple groups. In crop rotations, cover crops planted either before or concurrent with a main crop and maintained as a living ground cover (living mulch, LM) may provide many beneficial ecosystem services, and can be defined as ‘agro-ecological service crops’ (ASC). The objective of this research was to study the suitability of burr medic (Medicago polymorpha L. var. anglona) as an LM for organic cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. var. botrytis) production in a Mediterranean environment. Two LM sowing times (early sowing – sowing concurrent with cauliflower transplanting versus late sowing – 3 weeks later) compared with a no living mulch control (LM-CT) were investigated in central Italy (Experiment 1), along with a comparison between two local cauliflower cultivars and a hybrid. In Southern Italy (Experiment 2), crop performance under two LM sowing times [20 days before cauliflower transplanting versus concurrent sowing (CS)] compared with a no LM-CT , with organic fertilizers and amendments allowed in organic farming as subplots, was assessed. In Experiment 1, no competition was observed between the late-sown ASC and the cash crop. An increase in crop nitrogen (N) uptake and weed mitigation was also determined in this treatment. There was a mixed response when comparing cultivar and LM interactions, with the hybrid cultivar in the late-sown LM producing the greatest yield. In Experiment 2, weather conditions had the greatest effect on crop response. However, an inverse trend between growth of the cash crop and the LM crop was observed in the CS treatment. A positive effect of LM introduction was found, particularly in altering the competitive relationship for N between the cash crop and weeds. In addition, yield results showed that, in LM systems, commercial organic fertilizers could be replaced with locally available organic fertilizers and amendments without any yield penalty. The effectiveness of LM strategies will thus depend on several factors: type of LM, cultivar of vegetable, weather, soils, length of growing season and ability to plant the cash crop into the LM. Initial research suggests the potential for burr medic as a LM for Mediterranean winter vegetable systems, but additional research is needed to ensure the viability of LM systems for longer periods of time. The role played by organic farming as an alternative system to conventional farming is widely questioned, since conflicting results on crop yields sometimes greatly affect system efficiency. As a result, prolonged monitoring studies on organic (OF) and conventional farming (CF) systems are still required, especially in real-life farm conditions, in which the entire production process is quantified. In this context, this study reports crop yields (winter wheat, maize, soybean) and energy efficiency, over a 13-year monitoring period, on a farm in north-east Italy in which two sectors are farmed following OF and CF practices. Results showed that organic yields were always lower than conventional ones, averaging 69%, although their range varied greatly over the years (from 45% to 90%) and depended on crop type. Several management constraints had effects on the lower yields, especially reduced available nutrients and cropping season, but also the timings and types of tillage operations. By contrast, OF practices usually had positive effects on the environment, due to reduced energy input mainly fertilisation (−33.4% MJ ha −1 y −1 ) and the generally higher productivity of invested energy (E Out E In −1 = 4.53 in OF and 4.28 in CF); energy use differences per product unit were mainly equal. Other factors, such as local climate and soil variability, may have influenced system performance, but as the two experimental sites were located at a distance of 3.5 km from each other, the data reported here are still valuable, in that they represent the results of 13 years of monitoring, during which farm management played a major role. This case study, although conducted in two separate sites, did not highlight the best overall solution at farm level, it does indicate that the agricultural systems applied would be better suited for different situations and targets (e.g., productive, energetic, ecologic). Genetically heterogeneous materials of inbred crops, such as evolutionary populations (EPs) and line mixtures, could reduce the genetic erosion and increase the yield stability of crops. EPs may also be exploited for bulk-based selection of inbred lines as an alternative to single-seed descent (SSD)-derived lines. This study focused on pea to compare: (a) biparental EPs from three connected crosses and their combination, and their bulk-derived inbred lines and 6-line and 12-line static mixtures, for grain yield, yield stability, and reliability (which combines mean yield and yield stability); (b) bulk-based vs. SSD-based selection of inbred lines. Bulk-derived lines were mass-selected after four-year natural selection and underwent further multi-environment selection of elite lines and components of mixtures. EPs, selected bulk-derived lines, and static mixtures were evaluated across eight environments of Northern and Central Italy encompassing organic or conventional management and pure stand or intercropping with cereals. Bulk-based vs. SSD-based selection of inbred lines were compared across three environments. Farmers' acceptability and various adaptive traits were also recorded. We also assessed shifts for adaptive traits between EPs or derived lines for the target region and material selected for a non-target region featuring severe terminal drought. In a comparison based on best-performing material, a 6-line mixture exhibited 4–7 % greater yield or yield reliability, and EP material showed a modest penalty (actually nil in its area of initial development), compared with bulk-derived lines. Most of this material tended towards greater yield, yield stability and reliability (in a context of large genotype × environment interaction), competitive ability in intercropping and farmers' appreciation than the best-performing commercial cultivar. Bulk-derived lines displayed 24 % higher mean yield, 2.3–2.5 greater yield gain per selection cycle and greater farmers' acceptability than SSD-derived lines, and were the only lines that allowed for genetic progress over commercial cultivars. Their advantage was associated with greater tolerance to low winter temperatures and taller plant stature that favored their adaptation to intercropping or organic farming. The EPs selected in contrasting environments or their derived lines displayed rapid shifts in adaptation pattern and associated traits. Evolutionary breeding issued highly valuable populations, inbred lines and line mixtures. EPs displayed quick adaption to specific environments for a low selection cost. Italy, one of the most involved countries in organic farming, represents a European case in the Mediterranean area concerning the sustainable food market, mainly based on organic food. The aim of this study is to investigate the theory of planned behaviour extended to past behaviour with particular attention to social pressure, in the context of sustainable food products across Italy. Data were collected on a regional basis and across different age classes and analyzed using structural equation modelling for a representative sample of approximately 3000 self-reporting respondents who account for a remarkable percentage (69%) of sustainable food products purchasing. The strongest intention to buy these products was found in Northern and Central Italy while the South and the Insular macro-regions exhibited the highest perceived purchasing barriers. The complexity of social pressure in predicting the intention to buy highlighted a clear and significant role of the Italian family in making sustainable food choices. However, the other social referent others, such as important people, friends, society, differentiated their contribution to these choices at territorial level. An exception to this latter trend was found for the society concept that completely failed its support as subjective norm predictor of intention. This may possibly be due to the fact that no sustainable food market policy is univocally identified in Italy, not even with legal certification unless it regards the organic sector. Nevertheless, past rewarding purchasing experience seemed to be the most effective motivation for buying sustainable food products in Italy. In conclusion, efforts both from the supply chain and political side should be made mainly in terms of rewarding purchasing experience and legal certification on sustainable food products. This research analyzes the efficiency of natural pest control in horticultural crops (Red chicory and White cabbage) within different regimes (organic and conventional). Agroecosystem food-web structure was examined in conventional and organic fields, in north-eastern Italy, considering phytophagous, parasitoid and hyperparasitoid guilds. Natural control agents were analysed, especially parasitoids of Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), one of the most problematic pests on cabbage crops. Phytophagous communities were more diverse and more predators and parasitoids were present in organic than in conventional farms. The parasitization of P. xylostella was significantly higher and the food-web structure was also more complex in organic than in conventional fields. Even with lower spray inputs, organic fields often supported a less abundant phytophagous community than conventional fields, even though the crop damage was similar in both management systems. The present data seem to indicate that the higher presence of biological control agents (predators and parasitoids) in organic fields is effective in moderating crop pest populations. Organic farming is supported in the European Union (EU), among others, via area-based organic payments, targeting better environmental standards, as well as consumers' demand for organic products. Despite the wide interest growing on hazelnut production in non-traditional production areas in Italy, supply of organic hazelnuts remains negligible. At the same time, evidences show that Italian farmers can receive organic payments, while plantation is not yielding and then either switch to conventional production or continue organic production with no harvest. We employ the annual annuity approach in order to check whether organic payment initiates investments that otherwise would have been unprofitable; and whether it can be exploited by a farmer who has never had intention to produce organic hazelnuts. Results suggest that organic support indeed might be distortive and does not stimulate stable conversion to organic production of hazelnuts. In this regard, we recommend that the current policy should be substantially changed by imposing additional restrictions on conventional or no production or by implying additional requirements for receiving organic payments, for instance at least two subsequent organic contracts. Participatory plant breeding (PPB) has been proposed as a breeding methodology to increase/optimize the development and adoption of several new varieties each one different and each adapted to individual microclimates. Tomato is an important horticultural crop in Europe, and in particular in Italy, and there is an increasing demand for organic tomatoes. Therefore, a PPB program was considered as the ideal approach to rapidly develop and deliver in each organic microclimate, a number of different tomato lines directly selected under organic conditions. Visual selection was applied by farmers and researchers in four F populations and in the F families obtained from selected F plants grown in unreplicated row and column designs in five locations. The agronomic performance of the F-derived F families at the end of two cycles of selection was evaluated by comparing the selected materials with commercial hybrids. Production traits and qualitative plant and fruit traits (plant vigor and hardiness, disease resistance, fruit quality) were analysed. A total of 15 F families was identified, of which three out-yielded significantly the respective commercial F hybrid, and twelve did not differ significantly from it. The putative superior varieties that are being developed from the F families represent important genetic material for organic agriculture, since they would assure good productive capacity and a seed availability at low cost. Most definitions of organic farming emphasise a holistic approach that combines quality production with sustainable practices and positive impact on resource conservation, biodiversity and animal welfare. Its founding values were also connected to small-scale production, minimisation of external inputs use, diversification and short market circuits. In the last two decades, organic farming has grown very rapidly, resulting in the subordination of its values to market forces. There has been a greater specialisation, an increase of scale, the involvement of large multinational corporations and the inclusion in global trade. This conventionalisation process and the connected certification standards, primarily focussed on banning the use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers, may weaken the vision of organic farming as a more sustainable alternative to conventional farming. This paper aims to identify the factors that influence the choice of organic farmers for more sustainable practices that go beyond the strict limits imposed by certification. A probabilistic model was estimated using survey data collected from 352 Italian and Portuguese certified organic farmers. The results show that women and farmers longest engaged in organic farming are more likely to adopt sustainable practices. They also indicate that farm size, land ownership, the existence of some types of complementary activities and the sources of information used by farmers affect the adoption of such practices. The potential effects of depleted uranium (DU) on the health of military personnel, civilians and on the environment have been the focus of considerable debate in the last two decades. In Italy, the issue came to the attention of the public when some soldiers developed cancer after participating in peace missions in the Balkans in the second half of the nineties. In this case study, we draw on theoretical perspectives on risk and crisis communication to examine how communication strategies on DU risk lead to the creation of a ‘DU case’ in Italy, through the amplification of public perception of risk. In-depth interviews were conducted with experts, policy-makers, journalists and members of associations of soldiers and families of victims (n = 30) and were qualitatively analysed. The findings indicate the presence of three temporal phases through which the ‘DU case’ unfolded, characterized by different forms of communication, which influenced risk responses by amplification effects. A chain of communication errors could be identified, which explains the ineffectiveness of the initial responses of public authorities to the risk event, leading to a crisis that persisted for some years. The media played a central role in communication in all phases of the crisis. The findings have several implications for the improvement of the public responses to this type of risk. Certification is an essential feature in organic farming, and it is based on inspections to verify compliance with respect to European Council Regulation-EC Reg. No 834/2007. A risk-based approach to noncompliance that alerts the control bodies to activate planning inspections would contribute to a more efficient and cost-effective certification system. An analysis of factors that can affect the probability of noncompliance in organic farming has thus been developed. This article examines the application of zero-inflated count data models to farm-level panel data from inspection results and sanctions obtained from the Ethical and Environmental Certification Institute, one of the main control bodies in Italy. We tested many a priori hypotheses related to the risk of noncompliance. We find evidence of an important role for past noncompliant behavior in predicting future noncompliance, while farm size and the occurrence of livestock also have roles in an increased probability of noncompliance. We conclude the article proposing that an efficient risk-based inspection system should be designed, weighting up the known probability of occurrence of a given noncompliance according to the severity of its impact.
