Objective: To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic among a sample of Italian dentists in terms of infection, strategies for infection control, organization of the dental clinic, attitude, and behavior., Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey. The sample consisted of 8000 Italian dentists selected among 63,375 using a computerized random sampling method. An electronic informed consent had to be signed. The questionnaire categories were on demographic, infection risk management, organization, and dentists' attitude and behavior. Geographic macro-areas were used for subgroup analysis., Results: Among 8000 invited dentists, 2443 agreed to participate to the survey (30.6%). Mean age was 51.2 years, women were 34.5%. A total of 6.1% self-reported COVID-19 experience and higher rate of infection was reported in north Italy compared to the south (p < 0.05). FFP2/FFP3 respirators (97.1%) and visors (97.4%) were used by almost all dentists. While, natural ventilation and mouthwashes were the most frequent approaches used to reduce the infection risk. Most of the dentists reported positive attitude, nevertheless 83.6% felt an increased responsibility., Conclusion: The self-reported COVID-19 prevalence was 6.1% with some differences among geographic areas. Nanotechnology applications are fast-growing in many industrial fields. Consequently, health effects of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) should be investigated. Within the EU-Life project NanoExplore, we developed a harmonized protocol of an international multicenter prospective cohort study of workers in ENM-producing companies. This article describes the development of the protocol, sample size calculation, data collection and management procedures and discusses its relevance with respect to research needs. Within this protocol, workers' ENM exposure will be assessed over four consecutive working days during the initial recruitment campaign and the subsequent follow-up campaigns. Biomonitoring using noninvasive sampling of exhaled breath condensate (EBC), exhaled air, and urine will be collected before and after 4-day exposure monitoring. Both exposure and effect biomarkers, will be quantified along with pulmonary function tests and diagnosed diseases reported using a standardized epidemiological questionnaire available in four languages. Until now, this protocol was implemented at seven companies in Switzerland, Spain and Italy. The protocol is well standardized, though sufficiently flexible to include company-specific conditions and occupational hygiene measures. The recruitment, to date, of 140 participants and collection of all data and samples, enabled us launching the first international cohort of nanotechnology workers. All companies dealing with ENMs could join the NanoExplore Consortium, apply this harmonized protocol and enter in the cohort, concieved as an open cohort. Its protocol meets all requirements of a hypotheses-driven prospective study, which will assess and reassess effects of ENM exposure on workers' health by updating the follow-up of the cohort. Background: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are the preferred anticoagulant drugs for the prevention of atrial fibrillation (AF)-related thromboembolic complications and for the treatment and the prevention of recurrences of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The evaluation of self-reported adverse drug reactions (ADRs) available from databases of drug-regulatory agencies such as the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) pharmacovigilance database represents a novel aid to guide decision making. Objective: To assess the safety profile of DOACs by analyzing ADR rates in the real-world Italian scenario. Methods: Post-marketing surveillance data recorded by the National Pharmacovigilance Network were retrieved for the time period 2017–2021 from the AIFA online site. The following data were collected for each DOAC: total ADR number, serious ADR number, gastrointestinal (GI) ADR, intracranial hemorrhage events (ICH ADR), and more frequently reported ADR for the study year. The safety profile was expressed by the risk index (RI). Results: Rivaroxaban use was associated with consistent and stable low rates of serious ADR, GI ADR, and ICH ADR across the 5-year study period. Rivaroxaban and apixaban showed the lowest RI for serious ADR and GI ADR, while rivaroxaban use was associated with significantly lower ICH events as compared to apixaban. Dabigatran was related to the highest RIs for every ADR class, in particular GI ADRs. Conclusions: DOACs presented an acceptable safety profile in the current post-market analysis. However, rivaroxaban and apixaban were associated with more favorable safety profiles as compared to dabigatran, while rivaroxaban provoked statistically significantly fewer ICH events as compared to apixaban.
