Background: Tobacco smoking is still frequent in Italy and a major cause of cancer globally. We estimated the burden of smoking-related cancer in Italy., Methods: To calculate the population attributable fraction (PAF), we adopted a counterfactual scenario for which all individuals never smoked. The PAF of current and former smoking and second-hand smoke (SHS) was estimated for cancers associated with these habits according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Relative risk estimates and prevalence of exposure were derived from large-scale studies and national surveys, respectively. A 20-year latency period between exposure and cancer was considered. Cancer incidence data for 2020 and mortality data for 2017 were obtained from the Italian Association of Cancer Registries., Results: Tobacco smoking caused, in men and women respectively, 90.0 % and 58.3 % of lung; 67.8 % and 53.5 % of pharyngeal; 47.0 % and 32.2 % of bladder; 45.9 % and 31.7 % of oral; 36.6 % and 23.6 % of esophageal; 23.0 % and 14.0 % of pancreatic cancer and lower percentages of cancers at other sites. Tobacco smoking accounted for 23.9 % and 7.7 % of new cancer cases in 2020, and 32.1 % and 11.3 % of cancer deaths in 2017 in men and women, respectively, corresponding to 17.3 % of cases and 24.5 % of cancer deaths overall. The PAF of lung cancer due to SHS in never smoking women married with smokers was 13.0 %., Conclusions: Tobacco smoking is a primary cause of cancer in Italy in both sexes. Objective: Endogenous and exogenous hormonal factors have been associated with female breast, genital, and colorectal cancer risk. The aim of the present study is to conduct an evidence-based evaluation of the fraction of cancers attributable to and prevented by exogenous hormonal (i.e., combined oral contraceptives [COC] and combined estrogen-progestogen menopausal therapy [CEPMT]) and reproductive factors (i.e., parity and breastfeeding) in Italy., Study Design: We calculated the population attributable and prevented fractions combining relative risks and prevalence of exposure in Italian women. Italian cancer incidence and mortality data were extracted from national sources and used to estimate the number of cancer cases and deaths attributable to reproductive factors and exogenous hormones in Italy in 2020. For long-term effects, a 20-year latency period was considered., Results: COC were responsible for 4.4 % of breast and 10.9 % of cervical cancers in women aged 15-44, but also avoided 6.4 % of endometrial, 5.6 % of ovarian, and 2.9 % of colorectal cancers in women of all ages. Overall, COC use prevented 1174 cancer diagnoses and 577 cancer deaths. CEPMT caused 0.4 % of breast cancers at age 45-69. Low parity accounted for 8.1 %, 11.8 % and 15.5 % of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancers, respectively (6267 cases, 1796 deaths). Objective: A large percentage of uterine cancer deaths worldwide are not attributed to the cervix or corpus, but classified as uterus part 'unspecified'. We provided the trend for the proportion of uterine cancer deaths certified as 'unspecified' in selected countries., Methods: We derived the proportions of 'unspecified' uterine cancers for 20 selected high- and middle-income countries with reliable death certification over the period 1994-2021, using official mortality data from the WHO database coded according to the 10th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases., Results: For the earliest available year, the proportion of deaths classified as 'unspecified' uterine cancers ranged from 5.8% in Mexico to 65.6% in Italy. In some countries only, this proportion decreased over time. For 10 countries the proportion of 'unspecified' uterus in the most recent available year was around 20%. The proportion of deaths at 20-44 years registered as uterus 'unspecified' was lower for all countries during the study period., Conclusion: A substantial number of uterine cancer deaths worldwide coded as 'unspecified' was observed, also in high-income countries where death certification for other common neoplasms is accurate. Objective: In the framework of daily time use, physical activity, and interpersonal relationships in patients with schizophrenia project, we aimed to investigate (a) within and between-group differences in daily time use of individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) and unaffected controls, stratifying them by age, sex, and employment status; (b) the associations between daily time use, the severity of psychiatric symptoms, and psychosocial functioning amongst those with SSD., Method: From October 2020 to October 2021, 306 outpatients and 312 individuals living in residential facilities (RFs) with SSD were recruited from 37 centers across Italy and compared on a measure of daily time use with 113 people unaffected by mental health problems. Statistical analyses included chi-squared tests, analysis of variance tests, t tests, Pearson's correlations, and nonparametric corresponding tests., Results: Individuals with SSD spent significantly more time in sedentary activities, leisure, and religious activities than unaffected controls, independent of age, sex, and employment status. Unaffected controls and outpatients spent more time engaged in productive activities than patients in RFs. Among the latter group, time spent in productive activities decreased significantly after 45 years of age, while time spent in self-care activities increased. Spending time engaged in sedentary activities was associated with greater severity of psychiatric symptoms and lower levels of functioning., Conclusions and Implications for Practice: This study provides a deep understanding of how individuals with SSD spend their time and how this is associated with the severity of their mental health problems. These findings highlight the need for proactive rehabilitation programs to promote productive occupation and social inclusion of people with SSD. Background & Aims: Overweight and obesity are associated with multiple cancers. We quantified the burden of cancer attributable to overweight and obesity in Italy., Methods: We estimated sex- and cancer site-specific population attributable fractions (PAFs) combining relative risks (from recent meta-analyses) with national obesity prevalence data (from a large sample survey conducted in 2005, to account for a 15-year lag period). Using nationwide mortality statistics and cancer registries data, we estimated the number of cancer cases and deaths attributable to overweight and obesity in Italy in 2020, based on the counterfactual scenario of a body mass index < 25 kg/m 2 ., Results: 3.6% of cancers in men and 4.0% in women in Italy were attributable to overweight and obesity, corresponding, respectively, to over 6900 and 7200 diagnoses in 2020. Attributable deaths were over 3600 in men and 2700 in women. PAFs (attributable cases) of overweight and obesity in men and women were, respectively, 38.1% (215 cases) and 21.8% (49 cases) for esophageal adenocarcinoma, 19.1% (1715 cases) and 14.5% (585 cases) for liver, 18.7% (1692 cases) and 16.7% (747 cases) for kidney, 13.7% (938 cases) and 10.1% (749 cases) for pancreatic, and 10.2% (2389 cases) and 3.4% (690 cases) for colorectal cancers. Objectives: To provide an evidence-based, comprehensive assessment of the current burden of infection-related cancers in Italy., Methods: We calculated the proportion of cancers attributable to infectious agents (Helicobacter pylori [Hp]; hepatitis B virus [HBV] and hepatitis C virus [HCV]; human papillomavirus [HPV]; human herpesvirus-8 [HHV8]; Epstein-Barr virus [EBV]; and human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]) to estimate the burden of infection-related cancer incidence (2020) and mortality (2017). Data on the prevalence of infections were derived from cross-sectional surveys of the Italian population, and relative risks from meta-analyses and large-scale studies. Attributable fractions were calculated based on the counterfactual scenario of a lack of infection., Results: We estimated that 7.6% of total cancer deaths in 2017 were attributable to infections, with a higher proportion in men (8.1%) than in women (6.9%). The corresponding figures for incident cases were 6.5%, 6.9% and 6.1%. Hp was the first cause of infection-related cancer deaths (3.3% of the total), followed by HCV (1.8%), HIV (1.1%), HBV (0.9%), HPV, EBV and HHV8 (each ≤0.7%). Regarding incidence, 2.4% of the new cancer cases were due to Hp, 1.3% due to HCV, 1.2% due to HIV, 1.0% due to HPV, 0.6% due to HBV and <0.5% due to EBV and HHV8., Conclusions: Our estimate of 7.6% of cancer deaths and 6.9% of incident cases that were attributable to infections in Italy is higher than those estimated in other developed countries. Hp is the major cause of infection-related cancer in Italy. A large part of the Italian population doesn't receive adequate information and support on how to maintain oral health. In this observational, cross-sectional, pilot study, we investigated how some lifestyle-related variables affect oral diseases and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children attending public-school summer services in Milan. A survey that included questions on children's oral disease, OHRQoL and lifestyle-related factors (feeding habits, oral hygiene protective behaviors, dental coaching and socio-economic and educational status), was administered to the children's caregivers. Data from 296 surveys were analyzed to assess the protective/negative effect of each variable on oral disease and OHRQoL. With respect to disease, the "never" consumption of fruit juice, the use of fluoride toothpaste, higher educational qualification and ISEE (equivalent family income) of those who filled out the form, resulted protective factors. Regarding OHRQoL, the "never" assumption/use of tea bottle, sugared pacifier and fruit juice as well as the use of fluoride toothpaste, a higher educational qualification and ISEE of those who filled out the form, resulted to have protective effects. In conclusion, protective behaviors and socio-economic status affect oral disease and OHRQoL in children of Milan.

Objectives: To report worldwide trends in suicide mortality during a period that covers 7 years after the 2008 global crisis., Methods: We performed a time trend analysis with joinpoint regression., Results: Over the 2000s, suicide mortality decreased with the largest declines observed in some Eastern European countries. The downward trends were followed by an increase in concomitance with the 2008 global crisis in some countries, including Greece (annual percentage change = + 6 in men and + 11.8 in women), the Netherlands (+ 4.2 in men and + 4.0 in women), and the UK (+ 1.6 in men), while the pre-crisis downward trends stopped in Germany, Italy, and Spain. The joinpoint analysis also revealed long-term rises in Brazil (+ 0.8 since 1990 in men and + 1.8 since 1999 in women), Mexico (+ 1.3 since 1995 in men and + 3.6 since 1990 in women), the USA (+ 1.7 since 2005 in men and + 4.2 since 2010 in women), and Australia (+ 1.8 in men and + 3.7 in women, since 2006 in both sexes)., Conclusions: Despite downward trends in several areas of the world, in some countries suicide rates increased since the 2008 global crisis.

Aims: To update cancer mortality statistics in Italy, analyzing 1980-2010 trends, and to predict 2015 mortality rates., Methods: World Health Organization cancer mortality and census data were extracted to calculate death rates for 30 cancer sites from 1980 to 2010. Trends were analyzed with joinpoint regression and predicted 2015 deaths rates were computed., Results: In 2010 in Italy, there were 175,046 cancer deaths (98,847 men and 76,199 women), with total mortality rates, respectively, of 138.22 and 82.6/100,000. The leading cause of cancer death in men was lung cancer (25,457 deaths, 36.2/100,000), whereas in women it was breast cancer (12,115 deaths, 15.38/100,000). Total cancer mortality in men has been decreasing since the late 1980s, with an estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) of -1.8 in 1994-2010. In women, total cancer mortality rates decreased throughout the study period, with an EAPC of -1.1 in 1992-2010. Trends in mortality were decreasing for most cancers in both sexes. Only pancreatic and lung cancer trends in women were unfavorable. Total numbers of predicted cancer deaths in Italy for 2015 increased to 102,647 men and 82,047 women; however, the predicted rates decreased in men (129.1/100,000), while remaining stable in women (82.6/100,000)., Conclusions: Mortality rates for the most common cancers in Italy showed favorable trends that are likely to continue in the near future, with the exception of lung cancer mortality in women. Maintaining these trends requires continuous and improved control of tobacco, alcohol, and nutrition/overweight. Further improvements in diagnosis and treatment may also have a significant impact on cancer mortality.

Objective: To analyse the hysterectomy rates (HR) temporal trends for gynecological benign conditions in Lombardy, Northern Italy., Study Design: Since 1991, discharges from public or private hospitals have been registered in a standard form (Lombardy Region registry). Women aged ≥20 years, residing in Lombardy, who underwent hysterectomy for benign conditions, were included in the study. Admissions were codified according to the ICD-9 and ICD-10. HRs per 1000 women residing in Lombardy, of the same age class, were computed., Results: In 1996-2010, 143,045 hysterectomies were performed for benign indications. HR showed a declining trend (average annual percent change (AAPC) -2.9), mainly due to the falling number of total abdominal hysterectomies (AAPC -5.3). The most remarkable decrease was seen in women aged 45-54 years (HR 8.05 in 1996 and 4.83 in 2010). Leiomyoma was the most frequent indication in women aged <55 years, whereas in older patients it was uterine prolapse., Conclusions: In 1996-2010, the frequency of hysterectomy in Lombardy fell markedly. This study confirms the declining trend in abdominal hysterectomies observed in most developed countries, though the surgical approaches to hysterectomy differ in different countries. Mortality data by geographic area and trend-based surveillance are particularly relevant in orienting public health decisions targeting specific populations. We analyzed overall and site-specific cancer mortality between 1988 and 2009 in the metropolitan area of Naples and Caserta in southern Italy. Age-standardized mortality rates (SMR) were computed for each 5-y age group, by gender, primitive cancer site and specific Province in the overall population and age-defined subgroups. Cancer mortality trends were quantified by annual percent change (APC) and 95% confidence interval (CI). From Naples and Caserta, the reduction observed between 1988 and 2009 in SMR in males, but not in females, was significantly lower compared with the decrease reported at a national level (-11.4% and -28.4%, respectively). In elderly men, differences between local and national SMR were more pronounced (+13.6% compared with -2.7%). In males, the joinpoint regression analysis showed the following APC and 95% CI: -0.9%/year (-1.2; -0.7) and -0.6%/year (-1.0; -0.2) for Naples and Caserta, respectively. In females, estimates were -0.6%/year (-0.8; -0.5) and -0.7%/year (-1.2; -0.3). The overall orientation toward declining cancer mortality trends appeared in antithesis with the slight, but significant, increase for some tumors (e.g., pancreatic cancer in both genders). A complex mixture of heterogeneous factors concurs to explain the evidence observed including lifestyle, access to screening procedures, advancements in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Further details might eventually derive from biomonitoring studies for ascertaining the causal link between exposure to potential contaminants in air, water, and soil and cancer-related outcomes in the area of interest.

Background: The risk of many cancers is higher in subjects with a family history (FH) of cancer at a concordant site. However, few studies investigated FH of cancer at discordant sites., Patients and Methods: This study is based on a network of Italian and Swiss case-control studies on 13 cancer sites conducted between 1991 and 2009, and including more than 12 000 cases and 11 000 controls. We collected information on history of any cancer in first degree relatives, and age at diagnosis. Odds ratios (ORs) for FH were calculated by multiple logistic regression models, adjusted for major confounding factors., Results: All sites showed an excess risk in relation to FH of cancer at the same site. Increased risks were also found for oral and pharyngeal cancer and FH of laryngeal cancer (OR = 3.3), esophageal cancer and FH of oral and pharyngeal cancer (OR = 4.1), breast cancer and FH of colorectal cancer (OR = 1.5) and of hemolymphopoietic cancers (OR = 1.7), ovarian cancer and FH of breast cancer (OR = 2.3), and prostate cancer and FH of bladder cancer (OR = 3.4). For most cancer sites, the association with FH was stronger when the proband was affected at age <60 years., Conclusions: Our results point to several potential cancer syndromes that appear among close relatives and may indicate the presence of genetic factors influencing multiple cancer sites.

Objectives: Data from southern European countries concerning teenage pregnancy have not been properly analysed so far. We provide the temporal trend of adolescent pregnancy rates in Lombardy, Northern Italy., Methods: Using the hospital discharge register (1996-2010), teenage pregnancy-related admission rates per 1000 girls aged 13 to 19 years, residing in Lombardy, were computed. Miscarriage-, induced abortion-, and delivery ratios/100 pregnancies, and caesarean section ratio/100 deliveries, were calculated., Results: The pregnancy rate increased from 9.07 in 1996-2000 to 10.20 in 2001-2005, and remained at that level (10.27) in 2006-2010. However, the rates by country of birth (native Italian and non-native Italian) showed a steady decline in 2003-2010, when data about residents in Lombardy, categorised by sex, age and country of birth, were available. The induced abortion rate rose from 5.38/1000 to 5.55/1000, then decreased slightly in 2006-2010. The abortion ratio/100 pregnancies diminished from 59.3 in 1996-2000 to 50.3 in 2006-2010., Conclusions: Between 1996 and 2010, the overall teenage pregnancy rate has risen in Lombardy. When the rates were calculated separately for adolescents born in Italy and immigrants, the trends reverted in the period 2003-2010: in both groups pregnancy- and birth rates steadily declined. Pregnancy-, abortion-, and birth rates in non-native Italians, after having dropped, are all still much higher than those among native Italians. Because the number of non-native Italian adolescent girls markedly increased over the last two decades, their group--with decreasing, but still higher, birth- and abortion rates--has caused the observed rise in those rates when all adolescents residing in Lombardy are considered indistinctly.

Aims and Background: This report provides up-to-date data and statistics for cancer mortality in Italy in 2008, and predicts the figures and rates for selected cancer sites for 2012., Methods: Cancer death certifications (for 30 sites) and resident population estimates in 2008 stratified by sex and age were obtained from the World Health Organization (WHO) database (WHOSIS). Mortality rates were age-standardized on the world standard population., Results: Cancer deaths registered in Italy in 2008 were 172,783 (97,773 men and 75,010 women), corresponding to age-standardized death rates of 144.1/100,000 men and 84.3/100,000 women. The projected cancer deaths in 2012 are 178,000 (100,000 men, 78,000 women) and the corresponding rates 132,5/100,000 men and 80.5/100,000 women. The favorable trend in lung cancer mortality among men was confirmed, with rates of 37.7/100,000 in 2008 (all ages) and 33.3 for 2012. Other tobacco-related cancers also declined in men but not in women, including pancreatic cancer, whose rates tended to level off over the last 3 years. The fall in female cancer mortality rates continues to be led by favorable trends in breast cancer (16.1/100,000 in 2007 and 15.2 in 2012), intestinal cancer, stomach cancer and uterine cancer. However, the female lung cancer mortality was still rising with 7743 deaths in 2008 (9.5/100,000), and lung cancer is predicted to become the second cause of female cancer mortality by 2012 (8,500 deaths, 9.8/100,000)., Conclusions: Reduced tobacco and alcohol consumption are largely responsible for the favorable trends in cancer mortality in men. Advances in treatment and management accounted for the reduced mortality from colorectal cancer, breast cancer, leukemias and a few other cancers, as well as improved diagnosis for colorectal, cervical and breast cancer. The rising epidemic of tobacco-related deaths in women indicates the need for targeted tobacco-control strategies.

Unlabelled: Familial clustering of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been frequently reported in eastern Asiatic countries, where hepatitis B infection is common. Little is known about the relationship between family history of liver cancer and HCC in Western populations. We carried out a case-control study in Italy, involving 229 HCC cases and 431 hospital controls. Data on family history were summarized through a binary indicator (yes/no) and a family history score (FHscore), considering selected family characteristics. Odds ratios (ORs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained from unconditional multiple logistic regression models, including terms for age, sex, study center, education, tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, hepatitis B surface antigen, and/or anti-hepatitis C virus positivity. We also performed a meta-analysis on family history of liver cancer and liver cancer updated to April 2011 using random-effects models. After adjustment for chronic infection with hepatitis B/C viruses, family history of liver cancer was associated with HCC risk, when using both the binary indicator (OR, 2.38; 95% CI, 1.01-5.58) and the FHscore, with increasing ORs for successive score categories. Compared to subjects without family history and no chronic infection with hepatitis B/C viruses, the OR for those exposed to both risk factors was 72.48 (95% CI, 21.92-239.73). In the meta-analysis, based on nine case-control and four cohort studies, for a total of approximately 3,600 liver cancer cases, the pooled relative risk for family history of liver cancer was 2.50 (95% CI, 2.06-3.03)., Conclusion: A family history of liver cancer increases HCC risk, independently of hepatitis. To provide an updated review of cancer mortality trends in Italy, cancer mortality and census data, from 1970 to 2007, were extracted from the WHO mortality database and analyzed using age-specific and standardized rates, and joinpoint regression. Total cancer mortality rates in men have been declining by 1.8% yearly since 1994, reaching a rate of 147 per 100 000 residents (world standard) in 2007. In women, total cancer mortality rates have been decreasing by 1.1% yearly since 1991, resulting in a standardized mortality rate of 85 per 100 000 residents in 2007. Avoided deaths, compared with rates of 1988, from lung, intestinal, stomach, and breast cancers amount to 30 646. In men, trends were driven by cancers of the lung and other tobacco-related sites, intestines, and stomach. Favorable trends for cancers of the breast, intestines, stomach, and uterus contributed to falls in mortality rate in women. Downward trends were seen in both sexes for Hodgkin's lymphoma, bone cancer, and leukemias. Lung cancer in women showed an upward trend, with mortality rates increasing by 2.6% yearly since 1997, becoming the second cause of cancer mortality in middle-aged women. Rising trends were seen in women for oral and pancreatic cancers, as well. The favorable trends in cancer mortality are related to reduced tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption in men, advancements in treatment and management for colorectal cancer, breast cancer, leukemias, and a few other rare treatable cancers, and improved diagnosis of colorectal, breast, and cervical cancers. The greater role of tobacco-related deaths in women suggests the need for targeted strategies.

This study aims to analyse the association between selected dietary indicators during pregnancy and the risk of small for gestational age (SGA) births in a South European population. This is a case-control study. Cases were 555 women who delivered SGA babies at the Luigi Mangiagalli Clinic of Milan and the Obstetric and Gynecology Clinic of the University of Verona. The controls were women who gave birth at term (≥37 weeks of gestation) to healthy infants with normal weight in the same clinics. Dietary information was collected with a food frequency questionnaire. Women with SGA babies reported a more frequent consumption of meat and olive oil, and a less frequent consumption of fish and eggs. Women with high consumption of olive oil had an increased risk of delivering an SGA baby [odds ratio (OR) 1.6, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.0-2.5]. The multivariate OR for high meat consumption was 1.4 (95% CI 1.1-1.9); for fish 0.8 (95% CI 0.6-1.0, χ² for trend 4.0, P = 0.045 ) and for egg 0.7 (95% CI 0.5-0.9). After allowing for factors generally known to be associated with SGA, we have shown that eating more fish and eggs, and less meat and possibly olive oil, are associated with a lower risk of delivering an SGA baby., (© 2009 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.)

Aims and Background: This report provides data and statistics for cancer mortality in Italy in 2003, updating previous work on the issue., Methods: Cancer death certification numbers by cause and estimates of the resident population in 2003, stratified by sex and quinquennium of age, were obtained from the World Health Organization database. In 2003, cause of death encoding was changed from the 9th to the 10th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). All cancers and groups of cancers, classified according to the 10th revision of the ICD, were grouped into 30 categories, besides other and unspecified sites. Mortality rates were age-standardized on the world standard population in five-year age groups up to 80-84 years and 85+., Results: The total number of cancer deaths in Italy was 167,144 in 2003 (96,127 men and 71,017 women), with age-standardized death rates of 160.63 and 89.32 per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively. Lung cancer mortality in men confirmed the favorable trend, with rates of 43.72/100,000 and 51.68/100,000 in the all ages and truncated groups, respectively. Most other tobacco-related cancers were also declining in men but not in women. Cancers of the female breast and uterus (cervix and corpus) continue to decrease, with overall rates of 17.11/100,000 and 3.71/100,000. Declines were also observed in stomach and testis cancers. A few cancer sites such as prostate and multiple myeloma appeared to rise, but these trends were mainly due to the ICD change and the stricter age-standardization categories (80-84 and 85+ instead of 80+)., Conclusions: Trends in cancer mortality remained favorable for most major cancer sites, mainly in men for tobacco-related cancers. Due to the classification changes brought about by the change of ICD and the stricter age standardization, the present mortality rates should only be compared to previous ones with due caution.

Aims and Background: To update previous work on Italian cancer mortality., Methods: WHO data were used to calculate death rates for 30 cancer sites for 2002. Trends were analyzed with joinpoint regression over the 1970-2002 period., Results: Total cancer deaths for 2002 in Italy were 163,070 (93,398 men, 69,672 women). Male cancer mortality rose until 1988 and since then has had a 1.4% yearly fall. The first cause of cancer death in males was lung cancer, accounting for 28% of deaths. The decrease in mortality from male lung cancer came about the end of the 1980's (estimated annual percentage change, EAPC, -1.26 from 1989 to 1993 and -2.32 thereafter) and was the main reason for the favorable trends in total male cancer mortality, reflecting the change in smoking prevalence in Italian males. Female total cancer mortality trends have also been favorable, with an overall yearly drop of 1.1% since 1992. The most frequent causes of cancer deaths in females were breast and colorectal cancers, accounting for 16% and 14% of cancer deaths, and both showed declining trends (EAPC, -1.80 since 1992 and -1.51 from 1993 for breast and colorectal cancers, respectively). Female lung cancer has been on the rise (EAPC, 0.82 since 1987) for the last decades due to the rise in cigarette smoking since the 1970's in Italian females., Discussion: Mortality from the most common cancers in Italy showed a favorable trend over recent years, the maintenance and potential improvement of which would require a strategy focusing on the control of tobacco and alcohol consumption, nutrition and diet. Early diagnosis for selected neoplasms can also have a relevant impact, together with advancements in treatments.

Background: Measuring self-perceived health status and risk perception according to environmental factors remains a major open issue with important health policy implications., Methods: To measure self-perceived health status in an area where a major thermoelectric plant has been active since 1994, in October 2001, we conducted a two sample survey using the SF-12 Health Survey. The study sample (2001 individuals) representative of the population living in the plant area (Montalto di Castro, Central Italy) was compared with a random sample of the general Italian population (1928 individuals). Mean values were adjusted for age, sex and education., Results: SF-12 summary scales means are comparable in both samples: 50.2 (SE: 0.3) versus 49.9 (SE: 0.3) for the physical score, and 47.7 (SE: 0.4) versus 48.7 (SE: 0.4) for the mental score for Montalto di Castro area and Italian sample respectively., Conclusion: People living near a major thermoelectric plant have a subjective health status comparable to that reported by the general Italian population.
