The article discusses a study on the glaciochemical and geophysical characteristics of Alto dell'Ortles, the highest glacier in the Eastern Alps on Ortles mountain in South Tyrol, Italy. Data obtained from surrounding stations were used in the preliminary reconstruction of summer air temperature and mass balance on the glacier. Failure to consider internal accumulation due to eventual meltwater percolation and refreezing has reportedly led to an underestimation of the annual mass balance. Also explained is the significance of the occurrence of few ice lenses in the snow pit within the proposed summer layers. Results showed that the glacier is thick and has an excellent lamination of the exposed ice layers down to bedrock.
