Serious gaps are found when evaluating the recognition and inclusion of gender aspects in transport strategies, research and innovation. Similar issues can be spotted in the transport labor market, where only 22% of workers are women at the European level. The roots of these limitations are in the low participation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) studies and, therefore, in the traditionally male-dominated transport field occupations. Stemming from the European project TInnGO, the current paper proposes a descriptive analysis to evaluate the gender gaps in educational provision and research in ten European countries. Specific indicators, such as percentages in the gender composition or the presence of university courses dealing with mobility and transport, have been defined and their availability in different countries is verified. In addition, a desktop review of practices for encouraging and supporting women in STEM studies is operated, underling characteristics such as the kind of initiative, the methods and tools used, the target group or the type of promoter. The results of this activity show that a wide network of associations and mentoring operates in various European nations, mostly targeting secondary school students, trying to make females aware of their potentialities in a deeply gender-biased field like the STEM one.

Background: Pediatric residency in Italy has undergone significant changes in recent years, with a notable increase in the number of pediatric residents. Exploring the implications of this increase, highlighting disparities in training opportunities, and discussing the broader socio-economic impacts on pediatric healthcare, represent a crucial consideration for the healthcare system in the future. Main Body: The Italian National Association of Pediatric Residents ("Osservatorio Nazionale Specializzandi in Pediatria", ONSP) conducted an extensive survey among pediatric residents to assess the current state of pediatric residency. Key findings indicate that 50% of respondents believe the number of residents is excessive for the available training opportunities, leading to concerns about the quality of education and hands-on experience. Despite the increased number of residents, the workload has increased, but up to one-third of residents feel that the autonomy provided by their programs is insufficient. Significant disparities in training quality were found across different regions, with notable shortages in neonatology and pediatric emergency departments. Research opportunities are also limited, with only 17% of residents finding the time allocated to research satisfactory, especially in central and southern Italy. Conclusion: The increase in pediatric residents presents both challenges and opportunities. Addressing these challenges through strategic reforms, such as implementing standardized national curricula, investing in training resources and mobility programs, and enhancing research opportunities, is crucial for the future of pediatric residency in Italy. Background: Nowadays, Thoracic Surgery is technologically advanced; therefore, it also focuses its attention on nursing care. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of the assessment of a dedicated team of nurses (DTN) in all onco-hematological patients undergoing VATS lobectomy for lung cancer on the outcome of the patient, preventing pressure injuries, reducing perioperative stress, duration of operations, complications, and hospital stay times. Methods: We performed a single-center observational retrospective study, including 31 DTN and 760 onco-hematological patients who underwent thoracic surgery between 30 October 2018 and 30 June 2023 at "Vanvitelli" University of Naples. Results: DTN ensures good nursing care before, during, and after surgery. Operative time was reduced by approximately 20 min, decreasing hospital infections in the DNT period and reducing intraoperative complications such as bleeding and hospital costs (p < 0.05). Objective: This meta-analysis with a systematic review was undertaken to assess the association between APOE allelic genotypes and the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the Italian population. Methods: The Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases were searched until 15 November 2023. The odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated using fixed and random effect models, depending on the I2 statistic value. The systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in agreement with the PRISMA guideline and registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023492580). Results: Our meta-analysis based on 15 studies revealed a higher risk of AD among Italian individuals carrying the APOE ε4 allele (OR = 3.60, 95% CI [2.90–4.47], p < 0.0001). The association of AD genotype APOE ε2ε4 (OR = 1.36, 95% CI [0.76–2.41], p = 0.29) was not statistically significant, while APOE ε3ε4 (OR = 3.43, 95% CI [2.95–3.99], p < 0.0001) has a high risk of AD development; the risk is more notably in the APOE ε4ε4 genotype (OR = 7.08, 95% CI [4.22–11.86], p < 0.0001). The APOE ε2 allele has a protective effect (APOE ε2 (OR = 0.47, 95% CI [0.29–0.74], p = 0.0013)), and similar results were achieved by APOE ε3 (OR  =  0.49, 95% CI [0.37–0.65], p < 0.0001). Subgroup analysis of three areas of Italy (southern, northern, and center) revealed that that APOE ε4 allele was a risk factor with a higher OR in northern Italy (OR 4.22; 95% CI [3.46–5.16], p < 0.0001) compared to southern and center Italy (OR 3.02; 95% CI [2.28–4.01], p < 0.0001 and OR 3.97; 95% CI [1.37–11.56], p < 0.0001, respectively). As well, APOE ε4ε4 genotype carriers had a significantly higher OR in northern Italy (OR 9.69; 95% CI [4.94–18.99], p < 0.0001) compared to in southern and center Italy (OR 4.38; 95% CI [1.54–12.47], p < 0.0001 and OR 3.59; 95% CI [0.87–14.86], p < 0.0001, respectively). Conclusions: This systematic review with a meta-analysis of the Italian population on APOE alleles, genotyping, and AD incidence, highlights that individuals harboring APOE ε4 have a higher risk of developing AD compared to those with other alleles. It also supports the protective effect of the APOE ε2 allele against the progress of AD. The qualitative analysis on the complex genetic interactions influencing Alzheimer risk emphasizes the need for further research on genetic and environmental factors for effective prevention strategies. The current study examined levels of implicit and explicit independent and interdependent self-construals (SCs) in early adolescents with and without a migration background in Italy and assessed whether SCs were linked to youths' positive adjustment in terms of self-esteem and prosocial behavior. Chinese early adolescents of immigrant background (n = 123) and Italian mainstreamers (n = 187) aged between 11 and 13 years participated in the Semantic Misattribution Procedure and completed a set of questionnaires. Results indicated that at the implicit level, Chinese-origin youths reported higher interdependence than their Italian nonimmigrant peers, whereas at the explicit level, Italian youths scored higher on independence than their Chinese counterparts. In both ethnocultural groups, independent SC (implicit and explicit) was positively related to self-esteem, whereas interdependent SC (implicit and explicit) was positively linked to prosocial behavior. Findings underscore the usefulness of integrating implicit and explicit measures to evaluate early adolescents' SCs in multicultural contexts.

Purpose: To clarify needs and requests of the young generation to the contemporary and future education on food systems, this paper aims to examine the following issues: students' background knowledge, students' behaviour as consumers and food citizenship, most interesting topics of SFS for students and students' preferences and expectations in developing different skills, topics and preferences in teaching/learning methods. Design/methodology/approach: This study was performed as an online-survey amongst eight European Universities in seven European Union (EU) countries to which 1,122 students responded. Data was analysed with descriptive and multivariate statistical analyses. Findings: Taste and Health are the most important values and motives that influence students' food buying and consumption decisions, but significant differences were found amongst students from different universities and countries. The most important topics for students for future teaching courses are "organic food", "fair trade", "organic agriculture" and most important skills to learn are "ability to make a judgement and justify decisions" and the "ability to create and innovate". Excursions and field trips as teaching methods was given the highest ranks. Research limitations/implications: Different study programmes and cultural backgrounds of the participating students in the different universities could be a limiting factor for the interpretation of some results. Originality/value: These results provide a basis for improvement of higher education in the EU towards sustainable food systems based on experiential learning/teaching methods.

The current study aimed to examine whether executive functioning (EF) moderates the expected association between poor parental supervision and emotional-behavioral problems among early adolescents with and without a migration background in Italy. In total, 97 Chinese immigrant and 165 Italian nonimmigrant early adolescents, aged 11 to 13 years (52% girls), completed a series of performance and computer-based tasks assessing their EFs, whereas primary caregivers rated their own parental supervision and their offspring's emotional-behavioral problems. Regression analyses indicated that in both groups, a better working memory capacity was associated with fewer problems. Moreover, low levels of inhibitory control strengthened the association between poor parental supervision and emotional-behavioral problems. In addition, among Chinese immigrant youth, higher levels of cognitive flexibility enhanced the link between poor parental supervision and emotional-behavioral problems. Results underscore the importance of parental supervision and EF processes for Chinese immigrant youths' psychological functioning.

Whereas an exercise intervention effectively improves patients' quality of life, little information is available about the contribution of each physical fitness component. This study aims to explore the association between physical fitness components and the quality-of-life domain in patients with cancer. Between September 2021 and August 2023, 160 patients with mixed cancer types visiting the Oncology Unit were selected on a consecutive basis according to selection criteria. They underwent a comprehensive baseline assessment including the six-minute walking test, the handgrip strength test, the isometric leg press test, the back scratch, sit and reach tests, their waist–hip ratio, and their body mass index. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life and Core Questionnaire was used to measure the quality of life. The sample size was based on the use of regression models to study associations between clinical characteristics and fitness outcomes. All of the analyses were performed using the SPSS v.25 statistical package. Patients had a mean age of 58 years, 68% were female, 42% were affected by breast cancer, and all were receiving anticancer treatments. Higher functional capacity was associated with better global health status (p < 0.0001) and physical (p < 0.0001), role (p < 0.0001), emotional (p = 0.026), and social function (p = 0.016) and inversely linked with fatigue (p = 0.001). Lower-limb flexibility was significantly associated with all of the domains except for role and social functions. The waist–hip ratio was inversely associated with physical function (p < 0.0001) and positively related to fatigue (p = 0.037). Background Platinum-based chemotherapy represents the standard first-line treatment for biliary tract cancers (BTC). Deficits in genes involved in the homologous recombination (HR) and DNA damage response (DDR) may confer higher sensitivity to platinum agents. Methods We retrospectively included patients affected by BTC from 2 Italian institutions. Inclusion criteria consist of the receipt of platinum-based chemotherapy in the metastatic setting and the availability of comprehensive genomic profiling using next-generation sequencing (NGS). Patients were included in the HRD-like group if demonstrated oncogenic or likely oncogenic alterations in HR-/DDR-genes. Clinical endpoints were compared between the HRD-like group and the non-HRD-like group. Results Seventy-four patients were included, of whom 25 (33%) in the HRD-like group and 49 (66%) in the non-HRD group. With a median follow-up of 26.04 months (interquartile-range [IQR] 9.41-29.27) in the HRD-like group and of 22.48 months (IQR 16.86-40.53) in the non-HRD group, no PFS difference emerged, with a mPFS of 5.18 months in the HRD-like group compared to 6.04 months in the non-HRD group (hazard ratio [HR], 1.017, 95% CI 0.58-1.78; P  = .95). No differences were observed in DCR (64% [95 CI 45%-83%] vs 73% [95 CI 61%-86%]; P  = .4), and CBR (45% [95% CI 28%-73%] vs 50% [95% CI, 37%-68%]; P  = .9) between the HRD-like group and non-HRD groups, respectively. Median OS did not statistically differ between the HRD-like group and non-HRD group (26.7 vs 18.0 months, respectively; HR, 0.670, 0.33 to 1.37, P  = .27). Conclusion HR-/DDR-genes, when assessed with regular tumor-only NGS panels, provide limited clinical validity to identify patients with BTC more likely to benefit from platinum-based chemotherapy. This article examines the distortion of data and its visualization in the context of Covid-19 in Italy. While data visualization has become prevalent across various scientific disciplines, it often suffers from being overly intricate, inappropriate for the data type, or capable of causing perceptual biases and data falsification. The surplus of digital data and its subsequent visualization can lead to the manipulation of information, crafting narratives that diverge from official communications and aim to undermine their credibility and accuracy. This article highlights the necessity for properly disseminating data literacy and investigates data visualization's epistemological and methodological dimensions, focusing specifically on the Italian scenario. Misrepresentation of COVID-19 data is characterized by the distortion and misrepresentation of the pandemic data collected, processed, and presented. Background and Objectives: Knee osteoarthritis is a serious burden for modern countries. Timing of surgery and treatment choice are still a matter of controversy in the orthopedic literature. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the incidence and hospitalization trends of high tibial osteotomy in Italy from 2001 to 2016. Materials and Methods: Data are sourced from the National Hospital Discharge Reports (SDO) of the Italian Ministry of Health between 2001 and 2016. Results: A total of 34,402 high tibial osteotomies were performed over the study period in Italy. The cumulative incidence was 3.6 cases per 100,000 residents. The age classes 50–54, 55–59 showed the higher number of procedures. In pediatric patients (0–19 years), high tibial osteotomies are also largely performed. The majority of patients having surgery were men with a M/F ratio of 1.5. The mean age of patients was 44.2 ± 19.2 years. Males were significantly younger than females (43.3 ± 20.7 vs. 45.6 ± 17.7). The average length of hospitalization was 6.1 ± 7.3 days. Over the course of the analysis, a declining trend in hospital stay length was seen. The main primary diagnosis codes were "Varus knee" (736.42 ICD-9-CM code, 33.9%), "Osteoarthrosis, localized, primary, leg region" (715.16 ICD-9-CM code, 9.5%). Conclusions: Over the study period, high tibial osteotomies in Italy almost halved. Varus deformity and knee osteoarthritis are the leading causes requiring high tibial osteotomy. Except for the pediatric setting, results showed that from the 20–24 age class to the 50–54 age class, there was an increasing request for knee osteotomy, whereas in those aged >60 years, the incidence progressively decreased. The evident decline in HTO performed over the years in Italy seems to reflect a minor role for knee osteotomy in the management of knee OA, as it seems to be primarily reserved for younger male patients. Background: Increasing work-related stress in academia can have an impact on physical and mental health. The aim of this study was to analyse the coping strategies of staff employed at the University of Udine and to verify whether sociodemographic data, professional position, and the presence of anxiety or depression symptoms are related to the use of different coping strategies. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study between June and December 2020 using the Brief COPE questionnaire. We correlated coping strategies with professional position, sociodemographic data, and the presence of anxiety or depressive symptoms measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire–9 and the General Anxiety Disorder–7. Results: A total of 366 people participated in the study, including 109 junior academics, 146 senior academics, and 111 administrative staff (response rate 23.6%). The three most frequently used coping strategies in terms of approach coping style were planning (6.77 ± 1.41), active coping (6.58 ± 1.45) and acceptance (6.23 ± 1.44). Women were more likely than men to report using approach and avoidant coping strategies (p < 0.001). Positive reframing and religion were most commonly used by administrative staff (p < 0.05), in contrast to junior academics, who were more likely to use substances and self-blame (p < 0.05). Anxiety was found to correlate with self-blame (OR 1.94) as a coping strategy, while depression was associated with venting (OR 2.83), self-blame (OR 3.27), and humor (OR 3.02). Conclusion: Identifying profiles of coping strategies can help higher education institutions to implement support strategies for the academic community, ultimately promoting healthier lives and more effective teaching and research. Our study has shown that women and junior academics among staff at the Udine University would benefit from a tailored health promotion intervention that encourages the use of approach coping styles to reduce their risk of developing anxiety and depressive symptoms. Air conditioning systems can play a positive or negative role in the spread of COVID-19 infection. The importance of sufficient outdoor air changes in buildings was highlighted by the World Health Organization, therefore these should be guaranteed by mechanical ventilation systems or adequate air conditioning systems. The proposed case study concerns the optimal number of outdoor air changes to limit COVID-19 contagion for a school building in Central Italy. The Wells–Riley model is used to assess the risk of airborne infection, while energy consumption is calculated by a dynamic energy simulation software. The scope of the paper offers an innovative method to define the optimal ventilation strategy for the building's HVAC system design to reduce the risk of infection with limited increases in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Results show that the desirable approach is the one in which the same low value of contagion risk is set in all rooms. This new approach results in significant energy savings, compared to the most common ones (setting the same high outdoor air rates for all rooms) to counteract the risk of infection. Finally, the zero-emission building target is verified by introducing a suitable photovoltaic system to offset pollutant emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fungal melanonychia is an uncommon condition, most typically caused by opportunistic melanin-producing pigmented filamentous fungi in the nail plate. In the present study, the clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with fungal melanonychia were analyzed through a systematic review of cases reported in the literature. The MESH terms used for the search were "melanonychia" AND "fungal" OR "fungi" through four databases: PubMed, SciELO, Google scholar and SCOPUS. After discarding inadequate articles using the exclusion criteria, 33 articles with 133 cases were analyzed, of which 44% were women, 56% were men and the age range was between 9 and 87 years. The majority of cases were reported in Turkey followed by Korea and Italy. Frequent causal agents detected were Trichophyton rubrum as non-dematiaceous in 55% and Neoscytalidium dimidiatum as dematiaceous in 8%. Predisposing factors included nail trauma, migration history, employment and/or outdoor activities. Involvement in a single nail was presented in 45% of the cases, while more than one affected nail was identified in 21%, with a range of 2 to 10 nails. Regarding the clinical classification, 41% evidenced more than one type of melanonychia, 21% corresponded to the longitudinal pattern and 13% was of total diffuse type. Likewise, the usual dermoscopic pattern was multicolor pigmentation. It is concluded that fungal melanonychia is an uncommon variant of onychomycosis and the differential diagnosis is broad, which highlights the complexity of this disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of the university in society and the economy is evolving. Universities produce knowledge that promotes technological developments, which are, in turn, critical to economic growth and competitiveness in the global economy. Therefore, it is increasingly expected that universities become more entrepreneurial and assume this third mission in order to promote innovation and development through the provision of technologies and business ventures. Drawing on data collected for The Changing Academic Profession Project--a comparative survey of the academic profession carried out in 19 countries from all over the world--this article explores Portuguese academic entrepreneurship engagement based on the involvement in the process of technology transfer as an activity performed in the context of research activities. It thus aims to contribute to knowledge about academics' engagement in entrepreneurial activity. Results from this study suggest that Portuguese academics are fairly involved in entrepreneurial activities and that there is an overall positive attitude towards application of research to real problems. Furthermore, it was possible to see that academics involved in processes of technology transfer are not only focused on activities such as research but also service to the outside community. However, when comparing academics involved and not involved in entrepreneurial activities, several significant differences are found in their attitudes, perceptions and behaviours.

Purpose: The present research aims to understand the performance disclosure levels provided by Italian healthcare organisations (HCOs). The authors conducted this study to assess the transparency of HCOs' performance reporting processes by examining the amount and the type of information disclosed in Annual Performance Reports (APRs). Design/methodology/approach: The present study uses a qualitative research methodology based on manual content analysis. The APRs of a sample of 171 Italian public HCOs were analysed. Findings: Results evidence that the APRs provide a sufficient level of disclosure of performance information, putting high attention on the epidemiological conditions; however, the APRs do not present a strong information function for stakeholders' decision-making purposes. The Italian HCOs APRs are not easily understandable because the APRs are not very concise and present information mainly in discursive terms with limited graphic support. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first research investigating both the extent and type of performance information reported by Italian HCOs in the APRs, considering the particular contextual conditions caused by the most significant challenge the healthcare (HC) sector has faced in recent years: the epidemiological crisis of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Objective: This study aims at evaluating the cost-of-illness (COI) of patients diagnosed with Behcet's syndrome (BS) in Italy, trying to depict the impact of different costs' components to the overall economic burden and analysing the variability of costs according to years since diagnosis and age at first symptoms. Methods: With a cross-sectional evaluation, we surveyed a large sample of BS patients in Italy assessing several dimensions related to BS, also including fact related to the use of health resources utilization, formal and informal care, and productivity losses. Overall costs, direct health, direct non-health, and indirect costs were thus estimated per patient/year considering a Societal perspective and the impact of years since diagnosis, age at first symptoms on costs was evaluated using generalized linear model (GLM) and a two-part model, adjusting for age and distinguishing among employed and non-employed responders. Results: A total of 207 patients were considered in the present study. From the perspective of the Society, mean overall costs for BS patient were estimated to be 21,624 € (0;193,617) per patient/year. Direct non-health expenses were the main costs component accounting for 58% of the overall costs, followed direct health costs, 36%, while indirect costs because of productivity losses represented 6% of the overall costs. Being employed resulted in significantly lower overall costs (p = 0.006). Results from the multivariate regression analyses suggested that the probability of incurring in overall costs equal to zero decreased as time from BS diagnosis is 1 year or more as compared to newly diagnosed patients (p < 0.001); while among those incurring in expenses, costs decreased for those experiencing first symptoms between 21 and 30 years (p = 0.027) or later (p = 0.032) as compared to those having symptoms earlier. Similar findings emerged among the subgroups of patients declaring themselves as workers, while no impact of years since diagnosis or age of first symptoms was found among non-workers. Conclusions: The present study offers a comprehensive overview of the economic consequences imposed by BS in a societal perspective, providing insights into the distribution of the different costs component related to BS, thus helping the development of targeted policies. Background: Antimicrobial resistance has been identified as a major threat to global health. The pig food chain is considered an important source of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the dispersion of ARGs in pig production system, including the external environment. Results: In the present study, we longitudinally followed one swine farm located in Italy from the weaning phase to the slaughterhouse to comprehensively assess the diversity of ARGs, their diffusion, and the bacteria associated with them. We obtained shotgun metagenomic sequences from 294 samples, including pig feces, farm environment, soil around the farm, wastewater, and slaughterhouse environment. We identified a total of 530 species-level genome bins (SGBs), which allowed us to assess the dispersion of microorganisms and their associated ARGs in the farm system. We identified 309 SGBs being shared between the animals gut microbiome, the internal and external farm environments. Specifically, these SGBs were characterized by a diverse and complex resistome, with ARGs active against 18 different classes of antibiotic compounds, well matching antibiotic use in the pig food chain in Europe. Conclusions: Collectively, our results highlight the urgency to implement more effective countermeasures to limit the dispersion of ARGs in the pig food systems and the relevance of metagenomics-based approaches to monitor the spread of ARGs for the safety of the farm working environment and the surrounding ecosystems. In this study, we attempt to experimentally investigate the flow turbulence structure in a partly vegetated channel. To achieve the objective of this study, we conducted extensive measurements of flow velocities within and outside the vegetated area, where the flow is fully developed. The experiments were conducted in a very large channel at the Coastal Engineering Laboratory of the Department of Civil, Environmental, Building Engineering and Chemistry at the Polytechnic University of Bari, Italy. The instantaneous three flow velocity components were accurately measured using a 3D-Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV)-Vectrino system at high frequency. Flow behaviors through the vegetated area, at the interface, and in the unobstructed area were analyzed via time-averaged velocities, turbulence intensity, correlation properties, spectral analysis, and vortex identification. Experimental results showed the development of three distinct characteristic flow zones: (i) a vegetated area of low streamwise velocity, high turbulence intensities, dominant inward interactions, and more intense power spectrum, (ii) a shear layer zone of increasing streamwise velocity, more enhanced transverse flow motion, exponential decrease in turbulence intensities, and frequent ejection and/or outward interaction events, and (iii) a free-stream zone of higher and almost constant streamwise velocity, lower turbulence intensities, frequent sweep and/or inward interaction events, and less intense streamwise power spectrum. The results brought further insights into the flow behaviors in these characteristic flow zones. The extensive and detailed measured data can provide a basis for improving and calibrating numerical simulations of partly vegetated channels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aquifers harbor unique and highly adapted species, contributing to critical ecological processes and services. Understanding the key factors driving invertebrate assemblages in aquifers is a challenging task that, traditionally, has primarily been achieved in karst aquifers. This study aimed to uncover the factors influencing the composition and functionality of groundwater crustaceans in a volcanic aquifer of central Italy. We adopted a multidisciplinary approach, combining hydrogeology, geology, microbiology, and ecology, and found that the aquifer consisted of three adjacent groundwater bodies (GWBs) with different geochemistry (i.e., sulfate-depleted, K-rich and earth-alkaline) and microbial characteristics that remained consistent over the study period. We also unveiled significant differences in both the taxonomic and functional composition of groundwater crustaceans across the three GWBs and these patterns were consistent over time. Notably, the sulfate-depleted GWB lacked groundwater-obligate species, burrowers, stenothermal and moderately stenothermal species, while the K-rich and earth-alkaline GWBs had different species with similar functions related to locomotion, diet, and feeding habits. Stenothermal and moderately stenothermal crustacean species were only found in the K-rich GWB, which lacked epigean species. Major ions (SO4, Ca, NO3, and K), trace elements (B, Al, V, Se, and Ba), and microbial factors related to microbial cells with low nucleic acid (LNA cells) and carbohydrate catabolic profiles were the main descriptors of groundwater-obligate species abundances. Our findings revealed a significant correlation between the abundances of groundwater-obligate crustaceans and LNA cells, thus suggesting a selective feeding of groundwater invertebrate species on the aquatic microbial community. Our research emphasizes the need to consider diverse hydrogeological contexts within individual aquifers. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, ventilation in buildings was not always given its due importance. The World Health Organization has highlighted the important role of air exchange with the outdoors in improving the air quality in buildings; buildings should, therefore, be equipped with mechanical ventilation or adequate air conditioning systems. This paper aims to investigate different retrofit solutions for air conditioning, evaluating them in terms of energy consumption and cost and the impact of increased outdoor air exchange rates on countering the propagation of COVID-19; the latter is the main novelty of the paper. As a case study, we take an existing office building located in Central Italy that was previously not equipped with a mechanical ventilation system (a system with primary air was introduced during the study). The energy analysis was conducted using dynamic simulation software after validation through energy bills; energy and economic analyses were conducted considering different external-air exchange rates. An optimal number of outdoor air changes was found to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 infection, a finding in line with the international literature. The increase in air changes with outdoor air leads to a rise in energy consumption and costs. These values were evaluated for different air conditioning systems and operational schedules. Simple Summary: The lung immune prognostic index (LIPI) is a valuable tool for reflecting the systemic inflammatory status by combining lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels and derived neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) values. In advanced non-small cell lung cancer, the LIPI score before starting PD-(L)1 checkpoint inhibitors can predict disease outcomes through three risk categories. Our hypothesis is that changes in the LIPI score during treatment can predict the likelihood of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Interestingly, patients who experienced a shift towards a more favorable prognostic category in their LIPI score were at a significantly higher risk of developing irAEs. Furthermore, the dynamic variations in LIPI score provided prognostic insights into overall survival outcomes. In advanced cancer patients undergoing immune checkpoint blockade, the burden of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) is high. The need for reliable biomarkers for irAEs remains unfulfilled in this expanding therapeutic field. The lung immune prognostic index (LIPI) is a noninvasive measure of systemic inflammation that has consistently shown a correlation with survival in various cancer types when assessed at baseline. This study sought to determine whether early changes in the LIPI score could discriminate the risk of irAEs and different survival outcomes in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients receiving PD-(L)1 blockade-based therapies. We included consecutive patients diagnosed with metastatic NSCLC who received pembrolizumab, nivolumab, or atezolizumab as second-line therapy following platinum-based chemotherapy, or first-line pembrolizumab either alone or in combination with platinum-based chemotherapy. The LIPI score relied on the combined values of derived neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) and lactate dehydrogenase. Their assessment at baseline and after two cycles of treatment allowed us to categorize the population into three subgroups with good (LIPI-0), intermediate (LIPI-1), and poor (LIPI-2) prognosis. Between April 2016 and May 2023, we enrolled a total of 345 eligible patients, 165 (47.8%) and 180 (52.2%) of whom were treated as first- and second-line at our facility, respectively. After applying propensity score matching, we considered 83 relevant patients in each cohort with a homogeneous distribution of all characteristics across the baseline LIPI subgroups. There was a noticeable change in the distribution of LIPI categories due to a significant decrease in dNLR values during treatment. Although no patients shifted to a worse prognosis category, 20 (24.1%) transitioned from LIPI-1 to LIPI-0, and 7 (8.4%) moved from LIPI-2 to LIPI-1 (p < 0.001). Throughout a median observation period of 7.3 (IQR 3.9–15.1) months, a total of 158 irAEs (63.5%) were documented, with 121 (48.6%) and 39 (15.7%) patients experiencing mild to moderate and severe adverse events, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the classification and changes in the LIPI score while on treatment were independent predictors of irAEs. The LIPI-0 group was found to have significantly increased odds of experiencing irAEs. Following a median follow-up period of 21.1 (95% CI 17.9–25.8) months, the multivariable Cox model confirmed LIPI categorization at any given time point as a significant covariate with influence on overall survival, irrespective of the treatment line. These findings suggest that reassessing the LIPI score after two cycles of treatment could help pinpoint patients particularly prone to immune-related toxicities. Those who maintain a good LIPI score or move from the intermediate to good category would be more likely to develop irAEs. A pot experiment was carried out to evaluate the remediation potential of Brassica juncea and Sorghum bicolor in the decontamination of soil polluted with heavy metals such as copper, lead, tin, and zinc along with polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy hydrocarbons. Two composts obtained from different composting processes were tested as biostimulating agents. At the end of the trial, the effect of plant/compost combinations on soil microbial composition, contaminant removal, biochemical indicators, and plant biomass production was determined. The results highlighted that compost addition improved plant biomass despite slowing down plants' removal of organic and inorganic contaminants. In addition, compost partially enhanced the soil biochemical indicators and modified the relative abundance of the rhizosphere microorganisms. Sorghum showed better mitigation performance than Brassica due to its higher growth. The soil fertility level, the choice of plant species, and microbial richness were found fundamental to perform soil remediation. In contrast, compost was relevant for a higher crop biomass yield. In the frame of developing sustainable, reliable, and regenerative interventions on existing buildings, namely on large-scale public housing, the implementation of functional, technological, and effective strategies is devoted to thoroughly assessing the transformability of buildings using trustworthy performance indicators. With this aim, in the present paper, an assessment framework tool is presented and tested to evaluate the potential of buildings for transformation through the detection of regeneration strategies for the reduction of energy consumption, a definition of the new apartments' internal layout, and the implementation of sustainable systems to foster rainwater harvesting. The procedure is tested on a case study in Latina (Italy), showing its suitability to quantitatively assess the regenerative potentiality of public housing, thus resulting in an effective supporting tool for designers and policy makers. This study is a subset analysis of a larger retrospective study that we have already published, with the aim of evaluating patient outcomes when R and T were administered in that order. The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate the relationship between survival outcomes and the first drug treatment duration (<3 months, 3 to <6 months, and ≥6 months) in patients who had received the regorafenib-to-trifluridine/tipiracil sequence or vice versa. Our substudy found that administering R three to six months prior to T can prolong both OS and PFS in comparison to the opposite sequence. In this context, regorafenib (R) and trifluridine/tipiracil (T) are two important novel therapeutic choices with statistically significant increases in overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and disease control, with different toxicity profiles. This study is a subgroup analysis of our larger retrospective study, already published, whose objective was to assess the outcomes of patients when R and T were given sequentially. Patients and Methods: The study involved thirteen Italian cancer centers on a 10-year retrospective observation (2012–2022). In this subgroup analysis, we focused our attention on the correlation between the first drug treatment duration (<3 months, 3 to <6 months and ≥6 months) and survival outcomes in patients who had received the sequence regorafenib-to-trifluridine/tipiracil, or vice versa. Results: The initial study included 866 patients with mCRC who received sequential T/R, or R/T, or T or R alone. This analysis is focused on evaluating the impact of the duration of the first treatment in the sequence on clinical outcomes (OS, PFS) and includes 146 and 116 patients of the T/R and R/T sequences, respectively. Based on the duration of the first drug treatment, subgroups for the T/R sequence included 27 patients (18.4%) who received T for <3 months, 86 (58.9%) treated for 3 to <6 months, and 33 (22.6%) treated for ≥6 months; in the reverse sequence (R as the first drug), subgroups included 18 patients (15.5%) who received their first treatment for <3 months, 62 (53.4%) treated for 3 to <6 months, and 35 (31.0%) treated for ≥6 months. In patients who received their first drug treatment for a period of 3 to <6 months, the R/T sequence had a significantly longer median OS (13.7 vs. 10.8 months, p = 0.0069) and a longer median PFS (10.8 vs. 8.5 months, p = 0.0003) than the T/R group. There were no statistically significant differences between groups with first drug treatment durations of <3 months and ≥6 months. Conclusions: Our analysis seems to suggest that the administration of R for a period of 3 to <6 months before that of T can prolong both OS and PFS, as compared to the opposite sequence. Despite the study of subterranean biodiversity facing harsh sampling and mapping challenges, the huge diversity of taxa, ecological adaptations and evolutionary trajectories in subterranean environments is gaining increasing attention. Yet, the spatial and environmental factors driving the composition of groundwater communities are still poorly understood. To partially fill this knowledge gap, we collected copepod crustaceans from 12 caves along the Italian peninsula between 2019 and 2022, sampling each cave twice. The resulting presence-absence data were analysed to assess: (i) between-cave taxonomic beta diversity, also partitioning between turnover and nestedness-resultant dissimilarity; (ii) the relative weight of geographic distance and climatic differences in shaping observed beta diversity. Seventy-one species of copepods were collected overall. Pairwise beta diversity was high for most pairs of caves, with turnover being the major component. Geographic distance-decay models partially explained total beta diversity and turnover patterns. However, in Generalized Dissimilarity Models (GDM), including surface climatic conditions as predictors, the contribution of seasonal temperature averages was generally higher than that of geographic distance. Further, the explanatory and predictive performance of the GDMs notably increased, along with temperature contribution, when widening the spatial extent from which climate data were gathered. Our results confirmed a high spatial turnover in groundwater copepods' assemblages and strengthened the link between regional climate and subterranean biodiversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decades of research has assessed the benefits of children's and adolescents' friendships, but friendships among youth often dissolve within a matter of months or years. Studies have investigated predictors and consequences of friendship stability with the expectation that, in order for friendships to have a positive or negative influence on youth, they need to be enduring. However, differing methodology used to assess friendships affects the proportion of stable friendships observed, which may confound conclusions. In this meta-analysis a number of methodological and substantive study comparisons were made to assess their contribution to differences in effect sizes across studies of friendship stability. Evaluation of the impact of methodological moderators can inform whether there are differences in methodology that can significantly bias effect sizes of friendship stability. Results suggest that time lag between measurement occasions and presence or absence of a school-year transition impacts friendship stability. However, despite differences in methodology, most differences investigated did not significantly impact friendship stability. This supports the validity of the conclusions drawn from literature on friendship stability.

There is hardly any cross-cultural research on the measurement invariance of the Brief Multidimensional Students' Life Satisfaction Scales (BMSLSS). The current article evaluates the measurement invariance of the BMSLSS across cultural contexts. This cross-sectional study sampled 7,739 adolescents and emerging adults in 23 countries. A multi-group confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit of configural and partial measurement weights invariance models, indicating similar patterns and strengths in factor loading for both adolescents and emerging adults across various countries. We found insufficient evidence for scalar invariance in both the adolescents' and the emerging adults' samples. A multi-level confirmatory factor analysis indicated configural invariance of the structure at country and individual level. Internal consistency, evaluated by alpha and omega coefficients per country, yielded acceptable results. The translated BMSLSS across different cultural contexts presents good psychometric characteristics similar to what has been reported in the original scale, though scalar invariance remains problematic. Our results indicate that the BMSLSS forms a brief measure of life satisfaction, which has accrued substantial evidence of construct validity, thus suitable for use in cross-cultural surveys with adolescents and emerging adults, although evaluation of degree of invariance must be carried out to ensure its suitability for mean comparisons.

Background: Emerging technologies have demonstrated outstanding potential in improving healthcare, yet their full integration remains a challenge for all medical specialties, including pediatrics. To support the swift implementation of technologies, we identified the current trends through a bibliometric review, and we conducted a survey on Italian pediatricians to gauge educational needs and willingness to integrate technologies into clinical practice. Methods: A working group of pediatricians representing various backgrounds designed and coordinated the study. To identify relevant topics for educational strategy development, we focused on virtual reality, telehealth, natural language processing, smartphone applications, robotics, genomics, and artificial intelligence. A bibliometric analysis limited to 2018–2023 was performed to identify trends and emerging applications within each topic. Based on the results, a questionnaire was developed and made available online to all Italian pediatricians. The results were analyzed through descriptive analysis and a multivariable logistic regression to explore associations between technology adoption and sociodemographic characteristics. Results: A total of 3,253 publications were found, with Telehealth and Telemedicine having the highest number of publications and Natural Language Processing the lowest. The number of respondents to the online questionnaire was 1,540, predominantly medical doctors with over 20 years of experience working as family pediatricians. Telehealth had the highest level of knowledge (95.2%), followed by smartphone applications (89.1%) and genomics (63.2%). The greatest potential for increased use through education programs was projected for natural language processing (+ 43.1%), artificial intelligence (+ 39.6%), and virtual and mixed reality (+ 38.1%). Female respondents and older individuals were less likely to use emerging technologies. Hospital pediatricians and residents were more likely to use AI. Conclusions: We developed a replicable strategy to identify emerging themes in medical technologies relevant to pediatrics and assess the educational needs of pediatricians. A significant gap still exists between current and potential usage of emerging technologies among Italian pediatricians although they showed a positive attitude towards implementing these technologies following specific education programs. The study highlights the need for comprehensive education programs on emerging technologies in pediatrics and recommends addressing gender and age disparities in technology adoption. In this work, a flower-shaped shading system with integrated tracking photovoltaic, suitable for sustainable extensive urban coverages, is designed. Detailed photovoltaic energy yield simulations with a single-diode model approach are performed to disclose the potential of the proposed tracking photovoltaic shading device (PVSD). Simulations are performed with reference to a case study. A double-layer space truss is used to house the innovative modular photovoltaic tracking system, and the first application is envisaged for the coverage of a public market area of a sunny municipality in Southern Italy. By comparing it with the traditional photovoltaic fixed system, the results of the simulations show a steadier energy generation of the new PVSD, and it also provides better coverage with renewable energy during the hours of the day when the traditional system produces low electric energy. Lastly, an early interactive prototype of the PVSD system is presented. The tracking mechanism is carefully designed, 3D-printed at a small scale and tested with a motorized dynamic system controlled by a microcontroller board. The realization of the physical prototype and the engineering of the movement mechanism confirmed the feasibility and the correct functioning of the conceived system opening to real-scale applications. The study aimed to investigate medicine shortages of critical relevance in the pandemic. A total of 487 active substances for the treatment of COVID-19-related symptoms and therapeutically similar medicines were reviewed as to whether or not a shortage had been notified in Austria, Italy, and Spain for February 2020, March 2020, April 2020 (first wave of the pandemic), and, in comparison, in November 2021 (fourth wave). Publicly accessible shortage registers managed by the national regulatory authorities were consulted. For 48 active substances, a shortage was notified for at least one of the study months, mostly March and April 2020. Out of these 48 active substances, 30 had been explicitly recommended as COVID-19 therapy options. A total of 71% of the active substances with notified shortage concerned medicines labeled as essential by the World Health Organization. During the first wave, Spain and Italy had higher numbers of shortage notifications for the product sample, in terms of active substances as well as medicine presentations, than Austria. In November 2021, the number of shortage notifications for the studied substances reached lower levels in Austria and Spain. Simple Summary: Lung lesions, which are common findings in finisher pigs, are considered useful indicators of animal health and welfare at the slaughterhouse. Several methods for evaluating such lesions have been developed, and selecting the best system is critical for obtaining reliable and consistent data. In this view, the aim of this study was to compare two well-known scoring methods (Madec and Blaha methods) using data on lung lesions collected by two operators in an Italian high-throughput abattoir under routine slaughter conditions. Overall, there was a satisfactory level of agreement between the two methods, although a discrepancy in accurately recognizing healthy lungs and minor injuries between the two systems has been observed. According to our results, the Blaha method is a visual-only system applicable to very large abattoirs. It can be easily used to provide an overview of the respiratory health status of pigs, although it can yield a higher percentage of false negative results. On the other hand, the Madec method can provide more detailed results but would be more challenging to use for continuous monitoring in large abattoirs because it requires both visual and palpation assessments. Respiratory diseases continue to pose significant challenges in pig production, and the assessment of lung lesions at the abattoir can provide valuable data for epidemiological investigations and disease surveillance. The evaluation of lung lesions at slaughter is a relatively simple, fast, and straightforward process but variations arising from different abattoirs, observers, and scoring methods can introduce uncertainty; moreover, the presence of multiple scoring systems complicates the comparisons of different studies, and currently, there are limited studies that compare these systems among each other. The objective of this study was to compare validated, simplified, and standardized schemes for assessing surface-related lung lesions in slaughtered pigs and analyze their reliability under field conditions. This study was conducted in a high-throughput abattoir in Italy, where two different scoring methods (Madec and Blaha) were benchmarked using 637 plucks. Statistical analysis revealed a good agreement between the two methods when severe or medium lesions were observed; however, their ability to accurately identify healthy lungs and minor injuries diverged significantly. These findings demonstrate that the Blaha method is more suitable for routine surveillance of swine respiratory diseases, whereas the Madec method can give more detailed and reliable results for the respiratory and welfare status of the animals at the farm level. Background: To predict delirium in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, the Prediction of Delirium in ICU Patients (PRE-DELIRIC) score may be used. This model may help nurses to predict delirium in high-risk ICU patients. Objectives: The aims of this study were to externally validate the PRE-DELIRIC model and to identify predictive factors and outcomes for ICU delirium. Method: All patients underwent delirium risk assessment by the PRE-DELIRIC model at admission. We used the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Check List to identify patients with delirium. The receiver operating characteristic curve measured discrimination capacity among patients with or without ICU delirium. Calibration ability was determined by slope and intercept. Results: The prevalence of ICU delirium was 55.8%. Discrimination capacity (Intensive Care Delirium Screening Check List score ≥4) expressed by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.81 (95% confidence interval, 0.75-0.88), whereas sensitivity was 91.3% and specificity was 64.4%. The best cut-off was 27%, obtained by the max Youden index. Calibration of the model was adequate, with a slope of 1.03 and intercept of 8.14. The onset of ICU delirium was associated with an increase in ICU length of stay (P <.0001), higher ICU mortality (P =.008), increased duration of mechanical ventilation (P <.0001), and more prolonged respiratory weaning (P <.0001) compared with patients without delirium. Discussion: The PRE-DELIRIC score is a sensitive measure that may be useful in early detection of patients at high risk for developing delirium. Parcel lockers seem to be a very interesting and innovative solution for any type of city, beneficial to both customers and online stores. Accounting for the growing number of B2C e-commerce customers, this measure significantly meets their needs. Moreover, this solution solves the challenges of last-mile deliveries, which are one of the major effects of heavy traffic of commercial vehicles in the whole city area. Recipients and senders of parcels through parcel lockers are the main generators of demand for this service. Hence, assessing their satisfaction and requirements is a key indicator of the development of this area. This work focuses on the efficiency of user parcel lockers and compares the situation in Italy, Poland, and Ukraine. This paper also presents an analysis of the already existing data on the satisfaction of parcel locker users, as well as the results of a study conducted among Ukrainian consumers for this work. The presence of phytoplankton parasites along the water column was explored at the Long‐Term Ecological Station MareChiara (LTER‐MC) in the Gulf of Naples (Mediterranean Sea) in October 2019. Microscopy analyses showed diatoms dominating the phytoplankton community in the upper layers (0–20 m). Metabarcoding data from the water column showed the presence of Chytridiomycota predominantly in the upper layers coinciding with the vertical distribution of diatoms. Laboratory incubations of natural samples enriched with different diatom cultures confirmed parasitic interactions of some of those chytrids—including members of Kappamyces—with diatom taxa. The temporal dynamics of diatoms and chytrids was also explored in a 3‐year metabarcoding time‐series (2011–2013) from surface waters of the study area and in sediment samples. Chytrids were recurrently present at low relative abundances, and some taxa found to infect diatoms in the incubation experiments were also identified in the ASV time‐series. However, co‐occurrence analyses did not show any clear or recurrent pairing patterns for chytrid and diatom taxa along the 3 years. The chytrid community in the sediments showed a clearly different species composition compared with that recorded in the water column samples, with higher diversity and relative abundance. The combination of observations, incubations, and metabarcoding confirmed that parasites are a common component of marine protist communities at LTER‐MC. Using an excised pig heart preparation with tubes, a manometer, and a visualizing apparatus, Giulio Ceradini, an Italian physiologist working in the years of 1871-1872 in Carl Ludwig's famous laboratory in Leipzig, Germany, illustrated the mechanism of closure of the semilunar valves. He was the first to conceive that the closure of the heart valves depends not on a static back pressure nor upon eddies but is primarily the consequence of the decelerated systolic efflux. This pioneer research of Ceradini was first published in German in 1872. The purpose of the present report is to revisit Ceradini's pioneering experiments and his interpretation of heart valve closure, which remains as true as it was in 1872. (Contains 2 figures.)

The present study examined the validity of the Basic Empathy Scale (BES) [Jolliffe, D., & Farrington, D. P. (2006a). Development and validation of the Basic Empathy Scale. "Journal of Adolescence," 29, 589-611; Jolliffe, D., & Farrington, D. P. (2006b). Examining the relationship between low empathy and bullying. "Aggressive Behavior," 32(6), 540-550.] and found further evidence for the scale's good psychometric properties. The BES was administered to a sample of 655 Italian adolescents to examine the generalizability and reliability of its factor structure. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis showed a reasonable data fit with the two hypothesized BES domains of Cognitive Empathy and Affective Empathy. Scale reliability was also satisfactory, showing good internal consistency. Lastly, BES scores were significantly associated with other empathy questionnaire scores (the Interpersonal Reactivity Index and Balanced Emotional Empathy Scale) and with a scale measuring prosocial behavior. Castanea sativa is very common in Italy, and the large amount of waste material generated during chestnut processing has a high environmental impact. Several studies demonstrated that chestnut by-products are a good source of bioactive compounds, mainly endowed with antioxidant properties. This study further investigates the anti-neuroinflammatory effect of chestnut leaf and spiny bur extracts, together with the deepest phytochemical characterisation (by NMR and MS) of active biomolecules contained in leaf extracts, which resulted in being more effective than spiny bur ones. BV-2 microglial cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were used as a model of neuroinflammation. In BV-2 cells pre-treated with chestnut extracts, LPS signalling is partially blocked via the reduced expression of TLR4 and CD14 as well as the expression of LPS-induced inflammatory markers. Leaf extract fractions revealed the presence of specific flavonoids, such as isorhamnetin glucoside, astragalin, myricitrin, kaempferol 3-rhamnosyl (1-6)(2″-trans-p-coumaroyl)hexoside, tiliroside and unsaturated fatty acids, all of which could be responsible for the observed anti-neuroinflammatory effects. Interestingly, the kaempferol derivative has been identified in chestnut for the first time. In conclusion, the exploitation of chestnut by-products is suitable for the achievement of two goals: satisfaction of consumers' demand for new, natural bio-active compounds and valorisation of by-products. Fermentation is one of the most ancient strategies to improve safety and extend shelf-life of the products. Starter cultures are mainly represented by lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which may also be bioprotective agents controlling the fermentation process, the native microbiota and pathogen outgrowth. This work aimed to select new LAB strains from spontaneously fermented sausages produced in different areas of Italy, which can be effective as starter cultures and bioprotective agents in fermented salami. The strains, mainly belonging to the Latilactobacillus sakei species, were characterized for their ability to inhibit major meat pathogens, the presence of antibiotic resistances and amine production. Moreover, technological performances, such as growth and acidification kinetics at increasing NaCl concentrations, were studied. As a result, new autochthonous Lat. sakei strains were obtained, lacking antibiotic resistance, possessing antimicrobial activity against Clostridium sporogenes, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella and Escherichia coli and with high growth performance under osmotic pressure. These strains have the potential for future application to improve the safety of fermented meats, even under conditions in which chemical preservatives are reduced or eliminated. Simple Summary: Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWSp) has recently been renamed to spectrum to reflect its diverse presentation and clinical features. In 2018, an international consensus developed a diagnostic approach and redefined clinical criteria, establishing a score above which a diagnosis can be made in case of a negative genetic test. We described a cohort of 831 patients to validate the efficacy of the 2018 consensus score for BWSp diagnosis, and to gather data on the performance of previous and current scoring systems, as well as the relationship between BWSp features, molecular tests, and the risk of cancer development. Different scoring systems for the clinical diagnosis of the Beckwith–Wiedemann spectrum (BWSp) have been developed over time, the most recent being the international consensus score. Here we try to validate and provide data on the performance metrics of these scoring systems of the 2018 international consensus and the previous ones, relating them to BWSp features, molecular tests, and the probability of cancer development in a cohort of 831 patients. The consensus scoring system had the best performance (sensitivity 0.85 and specificity 0.43). In our cohort, the diagnostic yield of tests on blood-extracted DNA was low in patients with a low consensus score (~20% with a score = 2), and the score did not correlate with cancer development. We observed hepatoblastoma (HB) in 4.3% of patients with UPD(11)pat and Wilms tumor in 1.9% of patients with isolated lateralized overgrowth (ILO). We validated the efficacy of the currently used consensus score for BWSp clinical diagnosis. Based on our observation, a first-tier analysis of tissue-extracted DNA in patients with <4 points may be considered. We discourage the use of the consensus score value as an indicator of the probability of cancer development. Introduction: Chronic pain is a distressing condition that should be treated in specialized pain clinics. Pain clinics offer a holistic, evidence-based approach, including pharmacological, complementary, and invasive treatments. This study aimed to provide preliminary information regarding chronic pain treatments and identify reasons for accessing an important hub-spoke pain clinic network. Methods: A retrospective multicenter cross-sectional study was carried out. A total of 1606 patients' records were included. Patients were selected from the 26 pain clinics of a single region in Italy. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used. Results: Multivariate models showed that the use of opioids were considered effective for severe or moderate pain [odds ratio (OR) 0.41; 95% 0.33–0.51], while the use of invasive treatments (OR 2.45; 95% 1.95–3.06) and the use of complementary therapy (OR 1.87; 95% 1.38–2.51) were associated with severe or moderate pain. Overall, age, sex, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) use, a combination of NSAIDs, complementary therapies, and a combination of opioids and invasive treatments did not seem to be significantly associated with the nature of pain. Multivariate models confirmed that clinical parameters such as the nature of pain, multi-diagnosis, more than one site of pain, treatments, and general practitioner, but not the severity of pain and use of invasive treatments, had an impact on the choice of a pain clinic. Conclusion: Opioids are useful in managing moderate or severe chronic pain. Multimodal approaches are used for the management of chronic pain. Moreover, it is not clear how patients are addressed to access different pain clinics (spoke versus hub) networks. More widespread adoption is needed for an interdisciplinary approach to managing chronic pain and adopting guideline recommendations, and rigorous research is required to provide more substantial evidence and support clinical practice. The determination of the authenticity of extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) has become more interesting in recent years. Italy is the first country in Europe in terms of number of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) oils, which connects consumers to a feeling of tradition and thus to higher quality standards. This work focused on the consideration of the inorganic content as a possible marker of EVOOs. Ten vegetable oils (VOs), eight Italian EVOOs and seven not Italian EVOOs were analyzed. After pretreatment by acid mineralization, Al, Ba, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, P, Sb, Se and Zn were determined by ICP-OES. The electrochemical properties of a selected group of EVOOs and other vegetal oils of different botanical origin were investigated by voltammetry. Carbon paste electrodes (CPEs) were prepared. The features observed in the voltammograms reflect the reactions of electroactive compounds, which are present in the oils. A chemometric treatment of the results was performed to assess the possibility to distinguish (i) the region of provenience considering the inorganic profile; and (ii) the plant species from which each oil was obtained on the basis of the current profile registered during voltammetric analysis. Inorganic composition seems to be a useful marker for the assessment of the geographical origin of an EVOO. The EVOO-CPEs voltammetry seems to have a good ability to distinguish the plant species of origin. The sweet cherry is an important fruit species that is widespread globally. In addition to the well-known traditional and modern varieties, a myriad of landraces is present in Europe, as well as in southern Italy. This study aims to evaluate the population structure, genetic relationships, and cases of duplicate samples in a collection of 143 accessions using GBS-derived SNP markers. The genetic material under investigation includes modern commercial varieties, ancient European and American varieties, landraces, and individuals retrieved from small orchards. Some of the known varieties were genetically analyzed here for the first time. In addition, several genotypes were collected from the Basilicata region (southern Italy), an area largely unexplored for sweet cherry genetic resources. The relationships among genotypes were assessed using four different methods: allele frequency and ancestry estimation, principal component analysis, Neighbor-Joining tree, and identity-by-state estimation. The analyses returned quite congruent results and highlighted the presence of four main genetic groups, namely: (i) American varieties, (ii) the 'Germersdorfer-Ferrovia' cluster, (iii) the 'Burlat' group, and (iv) the group of Italian landraces. The main drivers of clustering were ancestry, geographical distribution, and some important traits such as self-compatibility. The sweet cherries from Basilicata, herewith examined for the first time, were mostly distributed within the group of Italian landraces, being particularly linked to the autochthonous varieties of the Campania region. However, some genotypes were outside this group, thus suggesting the introduction of genetic material from other Italian regions or from European countries. The considerable amount of American and European modern varieties analyzed are genetically very closely related, suggesting a reduced genetic basis. In addition, we highlighted the discriminating ability of SNP markers to distinguish between an original variety and its mutant. Overall, our results may be useful in defining conservation strategies for sweet cherry germplasm and developing future breeding programs to enlarge the genetic basis of commercial varieties. At Stromboli Volcano, Italy, very long period (VLP) seismic signals and Strombolian eruptions have been attributed to the unsteady flow of gas slugs through the shallow plumbing system followed by explosive slug bursting at a free surface. In data from a 2018 seismo‐acoustic deployment, ∼92% of events in two main VLP multiplets do not coincide in time with impulsive infrasonic signals (the expected signal of explosive slug bursting); we term these "silent VLPs." The lack of infrasonically detected explosions relative to repeating VLPs does not support the commonly invoked "gas slug" model. We propose that VLPs may be generated when gas bubbles move into a weak semi‐solid plug in the uppermost portion of the conduit. The plug then acts as a mechanical filter in which pathways vary and guide or trap ascending gas slugs, allowing for passive (silent) gas release and explosive escape mechanisms decoupled in time from VLPs. Plain Language Summary: Very long period (VLP) seismic signals are thought to be produced by magma and gas flow through shallow volcano conduits. At Stromboli Volcano, Italy (the type volcano for Strombolian explosions) and other basaltic volcanoes worldwide, VLPs have been modeled as the result of flow of a gas slug through the conduit followed by an explosion when the slug bursts at a free surface. However, these interpretations do not account for variable crystal content (i.e., systems with three phases: solid, liquid, and gas). Here we show that the standard "slug" model does not hold during a period of intense study at Stromboli in 2018. We compare the timing and characteristics between two repeating VLP families and explosions at the surface, as characterized by acoustic data. The vast majority of VLPs do not have coincident explosions—we term these "silent VLPs." Our observations instead support a "plug" model. We argue that VLPs are generated when gas slugs interact with and move into a weak plug in the uppermost portion of the conduit, which acts as a mechanical filter for gas transport. This interpretation allows for both passive (silent) and explosive gas escape decoupled in time from VLPs. The misuse of antibiotics in the animal sector is the main driver of antibiotic resistance. More than 80% of Italian beef cattle imported from France are Charolais, which undergo a commingling procedure before reaching Italian fattening farms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of commingling Charolais cattle in France on antibiotic use (AMU) and animals' performances in Italy. A total of 19,756 young bulls from 449 batches transported to Italy between 2016 and 2018 were considered. Carcase weight (CW), slaughter age (SA), antibiotic treatments, vaccinations information and the French department of origin were available for each animal. Also, treatment incidence 100 (TI100it) and average daily carcase gain (ADCG) were calculated. Three classes of commingling were assigned to each animal according to the French department of origin. A linear mixed model was used to investigate sources of variation of CW, SA, ADCG and TI100it. Respiratory diseases were the main reasons for treatment and macrolides were the most used class of antibiotics. The TI100it decreased by 11% from 2016 to 2018 (p <.05). Animals that went through the highest level of commingling had lighter CW, lower ADCG and greater TI100it than animals subjected to lower commingling (p <.05). Younger animals reached higher TI100it than older ones (p <.05). Younger and highly commingled animals had higher TI100it (p <.001) than older animals equally commingled. This first-of-its-kind study showed that commingling procedures increase the risk of AMU and affect the performances of Charolais cattle. Commingling procedures increase the use of antibiotics and penalise animals' performances. Younger and highly commingled animals are at greater risk of being treated. In Italy, although the number of foreign-born residents has grown exponentially, there are no data on mortality risk among migrants who have alcohol use disorders (AUDs). We examined the mortality risk and causes of death for natives and non-natives in a cohort of individuals treated for AUDs in Northern Italy in the period from 01/01/1975 to 31/12/2016. We highlight important characteristics of non-natives compared to Italians: 1) a younger age and a higher proportion of females; 2) a better health status; 3) a better social capital 4) a lower risk of death. We found differences in mortality between the various areas of origin, with a higher risk among participants born in Asia and African countries other than Mediterranean. The excess mortality compared to the reference population (SMRs) was at least three times for Italians and two times for migrants. While the non-native patients with AUDs have in general better health than Italians with AUDs, our results highlighted higher percentage of dropouts from treatment and lower access to Mental Health Services, suggesting that barriers to the access and completion of therapeutic programs still exist. In recent years, the urgent need to increase the safety standards of viaducts and bridges—under static and dynamic loading conditions—has required the development of advanced modeling approaches able to accurately predict the expected behavior of such infrastructures in a reliable manner. This paper presents a comparison between the adoption of a simplified modeling approach, widely used in the current practice, where the response of the structural system neglects the effects of the soil-structure interaction (SSI) phenomenon (considering the base of the structure fixed at the ground surface) and a rigorous modeling approach that considers the full 3D problem with all the components of the system (superstructure, foundation, and soil), through a finite element model. The pier of a real-world viaduct in central Italy was considered, with the aim of starting from a specific case study with foundation characteristics that are frequently found in viaducts in Italy, to obtain results that can be generalized to a wide range of similar types. Its behavior was evaluated both in the dynamic range of small oscillations and in the field of the seismic response to low and strong motion events. Aims In functional tricuspid regurgitation (FTR) patients, tricuspid leaflet tethering and relatively low jet velocity could result in proximal flow geometry distortions that lead to underestimation of TR. Application of correction factors on two-dimensional (2D) proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) equation may increase its reliability. This study sought to evaluate the impact of the corrected 2D PISA method in quantifying FTR severity. Methods and results In 102 patients with FTR, we compared both conventional and corrected 2D PISA measurements of effective regurgitant orifice area [EROA vs. corrected (EROAc)] and regurgitant volume (RegVol vs. RegVolc) with those obtained by volumetric method (VM) using three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE), as reference. Both EROAc and RegVolc were larger than EROA (0.29 ± 0.26 vs. 0.22 ± 0.21 cm2; P < 0.001) and RegVol (24.5 ± 20 vs. 18.5 ± 14.25 mL; P < 0.001), respectively. Compared with VM, both EROAc and RegVolc resulted more accurate than EROA [bias = −0.04 cm2, limits of agreement (LOA) ± 0.02 cm2 vs. bias = −0.15 cm2, LOA ± 0.31 cm2] and RegVol (bias = −3.29 mL, LOA ± 2.19 mL vs. bias = −10.9 mL, LOA ± 13.5 mL). Using EROAc and RegVolc, 37% of patients were reclassified in higher grades of FTR severity. Corrected 2D PISA method led to a higher concordance of TR severity grade with the VM method (ĸ = 0.84 vs. ĸ = 0.33 for uncorrected PISA, P < 0.001). Conclusion Compared with VM by 3DE, the conventional PISA underestimated FTR severity in about 50% of patients. Correction for TV leaflets tethering angle and lower velocity of FTR jet improved 2D PISA accuracy and reclassified more than one-third of the patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
