The goals of the current research were to assess the immediate impact of invasive wild boar (Sus scrofa L.) in olive orchards of southern Italy. Over a one-year study, in grubbed and ungrubbed areas, we measured the seasonal changes on the fast soil biological and chemical responses at depths of 0–15 cm and 15–40 cm, and several leaf and fruit characteristics. The impact factor, IFG, was used to quantify the effects of wild boar on individual soil parameters. Grubbing induced an increase in the soil moisture at both depths. Soil pH, organic matter, and C/N ratio were higher in grubbed soils at 0–15 cm and lower at 15–40 cm compared to ungrubbed soils. These trends were reflected in the higher microbial community biomass and the inhibition of fungal fraction in grubbed topsoil, while an opposite tendency at 15–40 cm was found. Microbial biomass had the highest IFG in topsoil (94%) and metabolic quotient (85%) at a 15–40 cm depth. Microbial stress condition and C loss were found in grubbed soil at both depths. Furthermore, these soils were also shown to be of lower quality than ungrubbed soils, especially at 0–15 cm (SQI = 0.40 vs. 0.50, respectively). A main reason of the increasing interest in cereal landraces is their potential to offer more diversified and functional staple food. For instance, landraces are an underexploited resource of pigmented varieties, appreciated for the high accumulation of phytochemicals with known health benefits. This study characterized the chemical, functional, and technological features of the bran, semolina, and grains of two durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. subsp. durum, Desf.) landraces, named 'Purple' and 'Red' for their grain color, collected in Ethiopia and grown and sold in southern Italy as a niche product. Specifically, we analyzed the protein content, dry gluten, ash, total polyphenols, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, and specific phenolic acids. We also evaluated the antioxidant activity using DPPH- and ABTS-based methods. The two landraces had positive nutritional features, such as a high protein content, a rich and composite range of secondary metabolites (which include specific phenolic acids and anthocyanins), and antioxidant activities in all the fractions analyzed. The germplasm under investigation therefore has a well-justified potential to yield functional products and to diversify durum wheat-based foods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Tree species influence organic matter sequestration in forest soil. We explored the pattern of soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil organic nitrogen (SON) sequestration in two 40-year-old, adjacent forest stands, one with Black pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) and one with Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.). We compared the patterns of annual carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) sequestration in the organic and mineral soil layers of the two forests with literature data for <100years old deciduous and coniferous forests from different climatic zones. Carbon and N inputs, with aboveground litter fall, were significantly higher in the Black pine than in the Black locust stand. In the soil profile of the Black pine stand, the amount of SOC was significantly higher and that of SON significantly lower than in the Black locust stand. The average annual sequestration rates were 41.3 and 75.0gCm−2, and 2.9 and 2.6gNm−2, respectively, in the Black locust and the Black pine stands. In both forests most of SOC and SON were stored in the organic layers (OL and OF+OH). In the mineral soil layers the amount of SOC was similar for the two stands whereas the amount of SON was significantly higher in the Black locust stand (23.7 vs 14.6gNm−2). In all soil layers, the concentrations of water soluble organic matter (WSOM) were higher in the Black locust stand compared to that with Black pine. Manganese accumulated in the OF+OH layer of the Black pine stand. The results suggest different sequestration patterns, with higher SOC sequestration rates in the Black pine stand and higher SON sequestration rates in the Black locust stand. Comparison with literature data suggests this to be a generality in C and N sequestration patterns for coniferous and deciduous forests. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Disturbance in Mediterranean shrub lands creates gaps that break up the shrub cover and potentially restrict productivity and other ecosystem processes. Gaps make up to about 20% of the low Macchia area at the Castel Volturno nature reserve (southern Italy). The plant community consists mainly of small annual species (legumes, grasses and forbs) that germinate in November and die out before the onset of summer drought. The inter-annual variability in productivity and the relative abundance of legumes, grasses and forbs were assessed over 4 years (2004-2007) to evaluate main potential modifications of ecosystem processes determined by the occurrence of gaps in the shrub cover. In the study years, at the peak production, plant mass varied from about 250 to 700 g m-2; biomass belowground allocation varied from 23% in the wettest to 44% in the driest year. Belowground/aboveground biomass ratios were negatively related to rainfall and positively related to the length of the dry period, showing that water availability controls biomass allocation patterns. Legumes were the most abundant fraction (about 60%) of the aboveground mass in the wettest year. In the drier years legumes exhibited a shorter life cycle and senesced by mid-spring. Among the three functional groups monitored, legumes were the most sensitive to water shortage and their biomass was positively related to the amount of rainfall and negatively related to the length of the dry period. The higher fraction of legume mass was associated with higher nitrogen content in plant tissues and in the soil. Senesced annual species decomposed more than senescent Phillyrea sp. leaves. • Technosols in a short time show an important C accumulation in urban area. • Soil spectroscopy can provide a quick estimate of anthropogenic influence. • Vis–NIR spectra can be used to predict the content of microbial biomass and activity. Soil biological properties and carbon storage of three young Technosols deriving from volcanic soil of Campi Flegrei, Italy, were compared with two natural volcanic soils, sampled from two forest ecosystem sites (chestnut and Mediterranean maquis). The soil properties were examined with Vis-NIR spectroscopy and portable XRF, along the soil profile. The results showed that the average soil organic matter (SOM) amount in Technosols profiles were lower than in natural volcanic soils. The differences in SOM content between the two investigated natural volcanic soils probably resulted from their land-use histories and different plant cover. Indeed, the chestnut soil profile, which has a higher SOM content, was covered by an old chestnut grove, while the second soil profile, after a severe burning, showed a change in natural Oak forest vegetation towards the typical Mediterranean maquis. The microbial biomass can be predicted with Vis-NIR spectroscopy coupled with PLS Regression. Our results showed that 6-year natural incorporation of organic residue in Technosols significantly increased the C storage on the top soils due to the increase in C input with rhizodeposition. The forest soils show higher TOC content also with the depth that indicate a greater capacity of C storage in response to litter incorporation, whereas the Technosols accumulated about half the amount of TOC, compared to the chestnut grove. Indeed, after six years of natural vegetation, the Technosols showed a large potential to sequester C and to sustain biological activity. Wildfires have high frequency and intensity in the Mediterranean ecosystems that deeply modify the soil abiotic (i.e., pH, contents of water, organic matter and elements) and biotic properties (i.e., biomass and activity). In 2017, an intense wildfire occurred inside the Vesuvius National Park (Southern Italy), destroying approximately 50% of the existing plant cover. So, the research aimed to evaluate the fire effects on soil quality through single soil abiotic and biotic indicators and through an integrated index (SQI). To achieve the aim, soil samples were collected inside the Vesuvius National Park at 12 sampling field points before fire (BF) and after fire (AF). The findings highlighted that in AF soil, the contents of water and total carbon, element availability, respiration and the dehydrogenase activity were lower than in BF soil; in contrast, pH and hydrolase activity were significantly higher in AF soil. The microbial biomass and activity were affected by Al, Cr and Cu availability in both BF and AF soils. Despite the variations in each investigated soil abiotic and biotic property that occurred in AF soil, the overall soil quality did not significantly differ as compared to that calculated for the BF soil. The findings provide a contribution to the baseline definition of the properties and quality of burnt soil and highlight the short-term effects of fire on volcanic soil in the Mediterranean area.

Recently, surface soils of remote or protected areas, that receive pollutants from the surroundings or in situ activities through dry and wet deposition, exceed the baseline content of heavy metals. In the last decades, the use of single and integrated indices is a powerful tool to process, analyze and convey information about metal accumulation degree for decision makers to better manage protected areas. Single indices provide information about only one metal, whereas the integrated ones give a holistic evaluation. The aim of the research was to assess the temporal trends of three single (Contamination Factor, Enrichment Factor and Geo-accumulation Index) and two integrated (Pollution Load Index, Nemerow index) indices in order to evaluate if the touristic impact caused soil metal (Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb) accumulation. In autumn 2016 and in spring 2016 and 2017, the surface soils (0-10 cm) were collected at eight sites inside the Vesuvius National Park (Southern Italy), characterized by intense tourism from spring to autumn. The metal concentrations were measured in the soils and used to calculate the indices. In addition, the Ecological Risk Factor was calculated and the phytotoxicological assays were performed. The findings showed that the surface soils of the Vesuvius National Park were polluted by Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb, according to both single and integrated indices. The touristic impact would seem to be the main cause of soil metal accumulation, as the highest values of the calculated indices were detected for samples collected at the end of the touristic season and the lowest at the beginning of the touristic season. Anyway, Cu and Pb would seem also to derive by ex situ anthropogenic sources, whereas Cr and Ni also by natural sources, such as spontaneous fires and substrate weathering. Surface soils and one-year-old Quercus ilex L. leaves were investigated for element concentrations to evaluate the air quality of some sites in Campania (Southern Italy). Sampling was carried out at 7 natural and 7 urban sites from September 1998 to February 1999. The investigated elements were Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, V and Zn. At the urban sites, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni and Pb Leaf concentrations were on average two fold higher than at the natural sites. Cu, Pb and Zn soil concentrations were also higher at the urban sites. On the contrary, Cd, Cr and Mn soil concentrations were significantly lower than at the natural sites. Leaf and soil element concentrations were positively correlated for Cu and Pb, and negatively correlated for Cr. Both leaves and soil element accumulations showed a conspicuous deposition of Cu, Pb and Zn at the urban sites of Campania.
