In the Lessini Mountains, the southernmost prealpine area in the Veneto region, thousands of caves are found, many of which have been extensively studied from the biological point of view. Numerous studies have been carried out on taxonomic and biogeographic aspects over the last hundred years. Two caves, in particular, have been found to be extremely rich in species adapted to life in subterranean environments. These are the Arena Cave in the Monti Lessini Veronesi and the Buso della Rana cave system in the Monti Lessini Vicentini. The two caves have extremely different development: Arena Cave is about 100 meters in length, and the Buso della Rana-Pisatela cave system is more than 37 km in length. Despite this huge difference in size, they both have the highest number of subterranean dwelling species in northern Italy (16 troglobionts and 8 stygobionts in Arena Cave, and 7 troglobionts and 11 stygobionts in the Buso della Rana-Pisatela cave system). The primary aim of this work is to standardize the procedures for the handling, preparation, and distribution of food and beverages in collective catering within National Police structures. Therefore, its purpose is to offer aid for the assessment and implementation of procedures regarding the catering services activities carried out in canteens and bars located within the National Police areas. A checklist was elaborated to establish criteria and methods to verify these activities, to assess and enhance the effectiveness of the control system, and subsequently, to enable the implementation of any corrective measure, with the aim of ensuring the consumption of healthy food and preventing the occurrence of food-borne diseases as a result. The study was carried out in 2022 in 6 National Police canteens located in Central Italy and managed by a contractor for the specific service. These structures serve an average of 300 meals daily, divided into 1-3 ordinary meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). The examined canteens reported 3 minor non-conformities, 3 major non-conformities, and no critical non-conformities. This report regards the analysis of detected issues and corrective measures concerning catering hygiene in the Police Force to ensure food safety. To date, no guidelines have allegedly been established for the regulation of the procedures for carrying out the periodical mandatory inspection of collective catering operations. Simple Summary: In the present work, we considered areas located in a park of 4000 ha in northern Italy in a suburban area, with an altitude between 190 and 960 m asl. Our aim was to update the list of insect species and to evaluate the influence of habitat and the locality on the beetle fauna present in the park. We therefore monitored the insects using different collection techniques. A total of 409 different species were collected. Species in Coleoptera were the most abundant, followed by Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera, with other orders in smaller numbers. The analysis showed that the habitat influenced the communities more than the locality. Unfortunately, as there is no detailed historical information on the presence of the species in the area, we cannot hypothesize an effect of the area on the communities. This research, therefore, allowed us to list numerous species for the area, among which some are important, as they were never detected in this area, and constitutes a new starting point for future research on the biodiversity in the prealpine areas. Human activities and habitat fragmentation are known to greatly influence biodiversity. The aim of this study was to update an entomological checklist of a prealpine area in Italy, and also to evaluate the influence of different habitats and the proximity to cities on the entomological fauna. This study included different areas of a local park in Northern Italy, covering about 4000 ha, and situated at altitudes between 190 and 960 m asl. The surveys were carried out between 2010 and 2013 using different monitoring techniques (pitfall traps, car mounted nets, light traps, direct catches on soil and vegetation, visual sampling, gall collection). Furthermore, to assess the effect of habitat and locality on the composition of epigeic beetles, pitfall traps were set and inspected from April to September. All captured specimens were classified to species level. A total of 409 species were recorded, belonging to 7 orders and 78 families. A total of 76.1% were represented by Coleoptera, 13% Lepidoptera, 9.4% Hymenoptera, followed by other orders. In particular, some species with peculiar characteristics, or whose presence in the area had not been previously reported, were detected, such as Atheta pseudoelongatula, Ocypus rhaeticus, Tasgius tricinctus, Euplagia quadripunctaria, Scotopteryx angularia, Elachista constitella, Parornix bifurca, Oegoconia huemeri, and Lasius (Lasius) alienus. It seems possible that the habitat affected the community more than the locality. The woods showed a reduced biodiversity, and a simplified community structure. This paper provides the fourth edition of the checklist of birds recorded in northwestern Italy (the Piedmont and Aosta Valley regions) and covers more than 300 years of ornithological data, including subspecies. This work updates the previous works published in 1981, 2003, and 2009, with the revision of the AERC codes and the addition of special annotations for several species. We also provide some new settings to make the bird checklist a more useful tool for all users, particularly scholars and professionals interested in biodiversity assessment and conservation reports. To this end, (a) new coding concerning population estimates and trends, as well as risk categories (Red List), is introduced; (b) bird lists are structured for analysis at two temporal levels: the General Checklist (GCL), covering the period from 1685 to 2022, and the Operational Checklist (OCL), covering the decade 2010–2019, providing periods of reference for comparison and analysis; and (c) an electronic spreadsheet is provided as part of the online Supplementary Materials to allow for further data analysis by readers, if necessary. The list presently contains 408 species and 444 taxonomic units, which consist of both subspecies and monotypic species. Each of them has been allocated to one of the AERC categories A, B, C, or D, while category E has been excluded. Since the publication of the previous list (2009), 19 species have been added. The avifauna currently breeding in the Piedmont and Aosta Valley regions comprises 197 species, with an additional 9 species that were once breeders but are now considered regionally extinct. Background: To date, there is a substantial lack of information about gastropods from the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine in the north of Italy, notwithstanding the availability of detailed and comprehensive literature on this molluscan class. We present a gastropod fauna from the Natural Reserve of the Pliocene Mountain Spur: to our knowledge, this is the first investigation of the extant gastropod fauna in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine and one of the few in the Apennine's mountain chain as a whole. New information: We describe a gastropod fauna comprised by 25 species, belonging to 18 genera and 10 families: the general figure which is emerging is an assemblage of European and Mediterranean-European species, with a single Asian contribution. Several shells were collected as embedded in sandy-clayey soils and showed fossilisation traces: therefore, we regard these shells as subfossil samples. Namely, subfossil shells are from the species Pomatias elegans, Granaria frumentum, Retinella olivetorum, Xerolenta obvia obvia, Oxychilus cf. draparnaudi, Monacha cartusiana and Monacha cantiana. The present checklist is the first report in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine and Emilia-Romagna areas for six taxa: Morlina glabra glabra, Oxychilius alliarius, Xerosecta cespitum, Fruticicola fruticum, Xerogyra spadae and Xerolenta obvia obvia. Biodiversity is a broad concept that encompasses the diversity of nature, from the genetic to the habitat scale, and ensures the proper functioning of ecosystems. The Mediterranean Sea, one of the world's most biodiverse marine basins, faces major threats, such as overexploitation of resources, pollution and climate change. Here we provide the first multi-taxa inventory of marine organisms and coastal terrestrial flora recorded in southeastern Salento (Ionian Sea, Italy), realized during the project "Biodiversity MARE Tricase", which provided the first baseline of species living in the area. Sampling was carried out by SCUBA and free diving, fishing gears, and citizen science from 0 to 70 m. Overall, 697 taxa were found between March 2016 and October 2017, 94% of which were identified to the species level. Of these, 19 taxa represented new records for the Ionian Sea (36 additional new records had been reported in previous publications on specific groups, namely Porifera and Mollusca Heterobranchia), and two findings represented the easternmost records in the Mediterranean Sea (Helicosalpa virgula and Lampea pancerina). For eight other taxa, our findings represented the only locality in the Ionian Sea, besides the Straits of Messina. In addition to the species list, phenological events (e.g., blooms, presence of reproductive traits and behaviour) were also reported, with a focus on gelatinous plankton. Our results reveal that even for a relatively well-known area, current biodiversity knowledge may still be limited, and targeted investigations are needed to fill the gaps. Further research is needed to understand the distribution and temporal trends of Mediterranean biodiversity and to provide baseline data to identify ongoing and future changes. Background Prior to this study, 141 species of Tephritidae were known to occur in Italy. New information Italian records of nine species of the family Tephritidae (Diptera) are provided. Five species, Eurasimona stigma (Loew, 1840), Noeeta bisetosa Merz, 1992, Campiglossa doronici (Loew, 1856), Xyphosia laticauda (Meigen, 1826) and Rhagoletis berberidis Jermy, 1961 are recorded from Italy for the first time, whereas four species, Inuromaesa maura (Frauenfeld, 1857), Urophora cuspidata (Meigen, 1826), Tephritis conyzifoliae Merz, 1992 and T. mutabilis Merz, 1992, previously recorded in the Fauna Europaea database without reference to collection material, are confirmed and supplemented with host plant data and other collection data. Digital data concerning the flora of Italy are largely fragmented among different resources hosted on different platforms, and often with different data standards, which are neither connected by a common access point, nor by web services, thus constituting a relevant obstacle to data access and usage. Taxonomic incongruences add a further complication. This paper describes "FlorItaly", an online information system which allows to access and query updated information on the checklist of the flora of Italy, aiming at becoming an aggregator for Italian botanical resources. "FlorItaly" was developed in a collaborative effort by more than 50 taxonomists, with the support of the Italian Botanical Society, and of Project "Dryades" (University of Trieste), to provide a better and reliable organization of botanical knowledge in Italy, as well as a relevant simplification for data retrieval, and a further stimulus towards a more collaborative approach in botanical research. Checklists represent a basic tool for conservation and management of regional faunas. However, our knowledge on species composition in a territory changes over time due to species movements across borders, extinctions, introductions, as well as to new taxonomic evidence. We aimed to provide the most updated data on native and non-native species of mammals occurring, or that used to occur until recently, on the Italian political territory and seas. The checklist only includes species whose taxonomic status was explicitly agreed in the most recent peer-reviewed literature and based on the most updated taxonomic approaches. For each species, we provided the following information: scientific and common name, global and Italian range, relevant information for management and conservation (e.g. whether it is endemic, allochthonous, or listed in international regulations and red list assessments), as well as remarks on taxonomy and distribution. This new check list of Italian mammal fauna includes nine marine and 114 terrestrial species, belonging to seven orders (Erinaceomorpha, Soricomorpha, Chiroptera, Carnivora, Cetartiodactyla, Rodentia, Lagomorpha), and 28 families. Vespertilionidae represents the richest family (n=27 species), followed by Cricetidae (n=12) and Soricidae (n=11). The list includes 15-16 allocthonous species. Considering the relative small size of the country, Italy is confirmed as a hotspot of mammal diversity in Europe, hosting the highest species richness in relation to the total area. Within the Project "animal Biodiversity Monitoring in the alpine Environment" the Orthoptera fauna has been studied in a threeyear period (2013-2015). The first check-list of the protected area, with ecological and biogeographical notes, is presented. We found 40 species (16 Ensifera, 24 Caelifera), corresponding to 11% of the Italian Orthoptera fauna. a geographic differentiation in species distribution among the three areas (alto adige - BZ, Trentino - TN and Lombardy - BS and SO) has been detected. The genus Barbitistes is represented by B. serricauda in alto adige and B. alpinus in Trentino and Lombardy. Kisella irena is restricted to Peio and Rabbi Valleys only, in connection with this species distribution in Trentino. Within the Park, Euthystira brachyptera is distributed only in Lombardy, despite its habitat is apparently extensively available also in Trentino and alto adige. We found Omocestus haemorrhoidalis and Chorthippus vagans only in Val Venosta (BZ). Only two species, previously reported for the study area, has not been detected during our surveys: Celes variabilis and Ruspolia nitidula. The first site of presence of Tettigonia caudata, rare in Italy, within the Park boundaries has been discovered near Martello (BZ). Two endangered taxa of high conservation value, Epacromius tergestinus ponticus and Crysochraon dispar, reported in the last Century just outside the Park boundaries, are probably extinct today due to habitat loss. Objectives: To compare the diagnostic test accuracy in terms of discriminant validity of the Kihon Checklist (KCL), Italian version, with respect to the Comprehensive Rheumatologic Assessment of Frailty (CRAF), and the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe Frailty Instrument (SHARE-FI) in identifying the presence of frailty in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients., Methods: An Italian version of the KCL was obtained by a consensus of experts. Then, adult RA patients underwent a cross-sectional evaluation inclusive of KCL, CRAF, and SHARE-FI. The performance of the tools was determined in terms of differences in areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC-ROCs) considering the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) criteria has external gold standard. For KCL, the optimal cut-point was determined at the Youden index., Results: The study included 219 RA patients. The three tools provided varying frailty prevalence percentages, from 16.0% (SHARE-FI) to 35.6% (CRAF). No scale performed better than others, according to AUC-ROCs comparisons, and when compared to the CHS criteria, all scales have an accuracy rate >80%. A KCL cut-off point of 7 resulted the optimum trade-off for sensitivity (93.3%), specificity (90.8%), with a positive likelihood ratio of 10.15., Conclusions: All the tools examined were useful and reflected the definition of frailty, however, the KCL was the most suitable since it is self-administered and might enable interventions in RA patients.

Background: Although early mobilization (EM) is recommended by most guidelines in acute stroke patients, there is a paucity of tools to perform a standardized patient risk assessment prior to EM in stroke units (SUs)., Objective: This survey aimed at assessing (1) the usefulness of an ad hoc checklist for a standardized approach to EM in SUs and (2) the relationship between EM achieved by this checklist and SU characteristics., Methods: This survey was carried out in 10 SUs in Piedmont, Italy. The EM checklist was based on 15 "items", including quantitative/qualitative, clinical and management features., Results: A total of 250 completed checklists were assessed. EM, defined as out-of-bed activity within 72 h of admission, was reached by 174 patients (69.6%), according to the checklist. There was a statistically significant association between the admission NIHSS score and EM. Hypotension at mobilization was observed in 29/250 patients (11.6%) and was significantly associated with EM. A total of 6 falls (2.4%) were reported. Nurses were most frequently involved in EM, either alone (40.8%) or with another professional., Conclusion: A large percentage of acute stroke patients managed to achieve a safe EM in the SUs that adopted the novel checklist. These results suggest that this checklist may well be a user-friendly, reliable tool to assist SU professionals in deciding whether to mobilize or not, by means of a standardized approach., (© 2022. Aim: Checklists may improve management of patients in different settings. However, no studies have been conducted to investigate the use of this tool to improve inpatient pain control. This study, conducted in Italy, aims to describe the experience, in terms of pain control, of the widespread introduction of a checklist for pain control in oncological patients, according to current Italian legislation.Materials& Methods: In total, 92 Italian centers were randomly assigned to the use of the 38Checkpain to monitor pain management or to continue their standard practice without the use of this tool.Results: The 38Checkpain improved the control of pain compared with centers who did not use this tool.Conclusion: Overall, the findings of this study suggest that the application of the 38Checkpain may help improve control of pain of hospitalized oncological patients. Introduction In the past few years much progress has been made in European Union in recognizing the importance of the work-related stress risk, and in adopting specific measures to assess such type of risk. In Italy, the legislative framework on occupational health and safety confirmed the obligation to assess the risk for work-related stress, according to the European Framework Agreement. Material and methods The Italian Workers’ Compensation Authority developed a methodology for the assessment of work related-stress risk as an integrated management risk approach comprising two main assessment tools: a checklist for measuring objective and observational risk indicators and a validated questionnaire to collect employees’ perceptions. This study aimed to explore the convergence degree among the results of the two assessment tools in a sample of 137 companies. Results By applying the univariate ANOVA the mean values of the questionnaire were compared to the levels of risk obtained in the preliminary assessment. The analyses highlighted that when the risk is higher in the preliminary assessment, there is an increase in the perceptions of the risk factors. In line with Cohen’s methodological guidelines findings revealed moderate values. Finally, the analysis of discrepancies shows a good concordance level among the results of the two assessment phases. Conclusions The study highlighted the effectiveness and reliability of the INAIL’s methodology. Such process enables companies to use two complementary tools for a more complete definition of the risk factors, in order to develop interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: We developed the Italian version of the adult developmental co-ordination disorders/dyspraxia checklist (ADC), providing reliability and concurrent validity data for the scale (Aim 1). In addition, we investigated the relationships between motor coordination difficulties and different autistic traits (Aim 2)., Methods: 498 participants (341 females; age range = 18-34) underwent the Italian version of the ADC, as well as a handwriting speed test, the autism spectrum quotient, the empathy quotient, and the systemizing quotient., Results: The distinction between three main factors (A, B, and C) identified in the original version of the ADC was confirmed here. Internal consistency of the ADC subscales was adequate, as well as the correlation with the handwriting speed test used to assess concurrent validity. No substantial sex differences on the ADC scores were found. Furthermore, data revealed that poor autistic-related communication skills and lower levels of systemizing tendencies were, among all the investigated autistic traits, those more strongly associated with higher motor coordination difficulties., Conclusions: The Italian ADC seems a valuable tool for assessing motor coordination difficulties in adults and can reveal the nuanced impact exerted by different autistic traits on self-reported motor functioning.

In the course of the project “Syntaxonomic checklist of the Italian classes, orders and alliances (Vegetation Prodrome of Italy)”, promoted in 2012 by the Italian “Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea Protection” in collaboration with the “Italian Society of Botany”, it arises that some syntaxa are not validly published according to the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature rules. For this reason, these syntaxa names are validated in this paper. Furthermore, other new syntaxa of different hierarchical levels are here described for the first time. Therefore, one new order, two new suborders, six new alliances, two new suballiances and three new associations are here described. These new syntaxa belong to the following classes:Juncetea maritimi,Stellarietea mediae,Trifolio medii–Geranietea sanguinei,Alnetea glutinosaeandSalici purpureae–Populetea nigrae.Finally, the syntaxonomic arrangement ofAlnion incanaeis here discussed. The Vegetation Prodrome of Italy was promoted in 2012 by the Italian “Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea Protection”, in collaboration with the “Italian Society of Botany”, to provide a comprehensive and systematic catalogue and description of Italian plant communities. The Prodrome that is presented in this paper is the first full organic synthesis of the vegetation of Italy at the alliance syntaxonomic level. It fulfils several needs, the main one being a unified and comprehensive national framework that may make an important contribution to the definition of the European Vegetation Prodrome. Syntaxonomy, as well as taxonomy, is sometimes based on considerations that may in part diverge: several authors tend to favour models that are divisive or aggregative to a greater or lesser extent in terms of flora, biogeography and ecology. These different points of view stimulate the scientific debate and allow the adoption of a framework that is more widely supported. The Prodrome includes 75 classes, 2 subclasses, 175 orders, 6 suborders and 393 alliances. The classes were grouped into nine broad categories according to structural, physiognomic and synecological elements rather than to syntaxonomic criteria. The rank, full valid name, any synonymies and incorrect names are provided for eachsyntaxon. The short declaration highlights the physiognomy, synecology, syndynamics and distribution of the plant communities that belong to thesyntaxon. The Prodrome of the Italian Vegetation is linked to the European Strategy for Biodiversity, the European Habitats Directive and the European Working Groups related to the ecosystems and their services. In addition to basic applications, the Prodrome can be used as a framework for scientific research related to the investigation of the relationships between plant communities and the environmental factors that influence their composition and distribution. An up-to-date checklist of the Italian Dermestidae is provided. The presence of 95 species in Italy is confirmed, while further 5 species (Dermestes (Dermestes) vorax Motschulsky, 1860, Thorictus pilosus Peyron, 1857, T. wasmanni Reitter, 1895, Attagenus (Attagenus) simonis Reitter, 1881 and Globicornis (G.) breviclavis (Reitter, 1878)) and 1 subspecies (A. (A.) tigrinus pulcher Faldermann, 1835) are excluded from the Italian fauna. Attagenus (Attagenus) calabricus Reitter, 1881 and A. (A.) lobatus Rosenhauer, 1856 are for the first time recorded from Abruzzi and Tuscany respectively; A. (A.) silvaticus Zhantiev, 1976 is recorded for the first time from mainland Italy (Apulia); Anthrenus (Anthrenus) angustefasciatus Ganglbauer, 1904 is new to northern Italy (Friuli-Venezia Giulia), central Italy (Tuscany), Apulia and Basilicata; A. (A.) munroi Hinton, 1943 is new to central Italy (Elba Island); A. The lectotype and a paralectotype are designated for Attagenus (A.) calabricus Reitter, 1881 from Calabria. Attagenus pellio (Linnaeus, 1758) var. pilosissimus Roubal, 1932 is removed from synonymy with A. An updated checklist for Stratiomyidae of Italy is presented. Objective: The early identification of adolescents at the onset of psychosis is crucial to provide effective interventions. The aim of this study is to examine the validity of the "early detection Primary Care Checklist" (PCC) in an Italian adolescent population. The PCC is a 20-item tool designed to assist primary care practitioners in identifying young people with early psychosis., Methods: The checklist was completed by the referring practitioners of 129 adolescents. The validity of this instrument was established by comparing screen results with the "Comprehensive Assessment of At-Risk Mental States.", Results: The simple checklist had excellent 98% sensitivity, but low specificity (58%). Abstract: Starting from the minimum requirements indicated by Lombardy Region, a validation checklist has been developed by experts in design, healthcare layout planning, hygiene and public health, planning and compliance, in order to provide managers of COVID-19 massive vaccination centers with a useful and easy-to-use tool to ensure quality, safety and efficiency of the different activities performed.

Scientific names are not part of everyday language in any modern country, and their input as strings in a query system can be easily associated with typographical errors. While globally unique identifiers univocally address a taxon name, they can hardly be used for querying a database manually. Thus, matching algorithms are often used to overcome misspelled names in query systems in several data repositories worldwide. In order to improve users' experience in the use of FlorItaly, the Portal to the Flora of Italy, a near match algorithm to resolve misspelled scientific names has been integrated in the query systems. In addition, a novel tool in FlorItaly, capable of rapidly aligning any list of names to the nomenclatural backbone provided by the national checklists, has been developed. Objective: The present study aims to develop a checklist, as a self-assessment tool, for evaluating all the items involved in the endoscope reprocessing that could be useful for the improvement and/or development of a safety endoscope reprocessing system., Materials and Methods: A three-step modified Delphi method, with an embedded qualitative component, was adopted to develop the checklist. According to it, corrective actions were performed before its further re-administration. Contextually, the microbiological surveillance of the endoscopes and of the wash disinfector machine was carried out., Results: Five areas were included in the checklist. After the 1st checklist application, only one of three wards reached the excellent scores in all the items. The other two wards showed an improvement in the Traceability and Endoscope Reprocessing areas after corrective actions. The McNemar's test reported significant difference in the proportion of satisfactory results before and after the 1st and 2nd checklist application. The microbiological surveillance, conducted after the 1st administration, showed unsatisfactory results for the 2 bronchoscopes available in the Intensive Care Unit and for 2 automated endoscope reprocessors. The analysis performed after the 2nd administration showed good results., Conclusions: The periodic administration of the checklist is functional for a self-assessment of quality reprocessing procedures carried out in the large endoscopic services and in the wards occasionally providing those services, according to the good practice guidelines and for any corrective actions to increase the safety.

Despite the importance for scientific and conservation purposes, the knowledge of the Italian territory is far from exhaustive. New chorological data for 87 vascular taxa regarding the central-southern part of Italy and its two main islands (Sicilia and Sardegna) are presented. Among these taxa, Epilobium nummularifolium, Metrosideros excelsa, and Salvinia minima are recorded as casual aliens for the first time in Europe (excluding Azores and Madeira for M. excelsa), while Cyclamen balearicum and Polygala rupestris are reported for the first time and confirmed for Italian native flora, respectively. Furthermore, several taxa are new or confirmed at regional level. Background: The aim of this study is to investigate the changes of developmental and behavioral profile in a domestic adoptees sample., Methods: Thirty-six domestic adoptive families were recruited, resulting in a sample of 39 children. Families were sent a general questionnaire for collecting data related to the children demographic variables, infant's background (time spent in institutional care, age at adoption), children's health status and anthropometric measures at T0, T1, T2, and T3. Moreover, the Infant Behavior Questionnaire-Revised Very Short Form and a modified version of parent-report of Child Behavior Checklist were used to assess temperament and to detect behavioral problems., Results: As regards the psychopathological evaluation, behavior problems were more common in older children, especially among girls. In particular they exhibited a higher frequency of internalizing problems versus externalizing., Conclusions: Children in foster care suffer discontinuity of care that negatively affects their emotional and physical development. It is important for pediatricians to be aware of the special needs of adopted children, providing adequate support to adoptive families.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) places significant burden not only on quality of life, but is also associated with considerable costs to healthcare systems. Diagnosis of AD may be challenging when it starts in adolescence or adulthood, and is further complicated as its manifestations are different from those generally seen in children. Accordingly, better definition of diagnostic criteria for adult onset AD is needed to avoid misdiagnosis and undertreatment in adult patients. To provide practical guidance for clinicians to reliably diagnose AD in adult patients, representatives from three Italian dermatology scientific societies (Italian Society of Dermatology and Venereology [SIDeMaST], Italian Association of Hospital Dermatologists [ADOI], Italian Society of Allergological, Occupational and Environmental Dermatology [SIDAPA]) carried out a joint consensus meeting to develop useful indications for improving diagnosis of moderate to severe AD in adult patients in routine clinical practice. The most representative criteria for morphological criteria, localization, clinical history, and differential diagnosis were identified by the experts. The most frequent clinical presentations are those on the flexural areas, hands, face/neck, and trunk, with itch and eczema as key manifestations. The diagnostic path defined herein can form a sort of "check list" for physicians to adopt when evaluating patients with suspected AD, which can help in refining a diagnosis and refer the patient for specialist dermatological care. It is hoped that the practical guidance developed by the consensus group will help to improve outcomes, lower overall costs of care, and ameliorate the patient's quality of life, even though validation in a large cohort of patients is still needed.

Introduction: The regional healthcare system of the Lombardy Region pay great attention to monitoring the effectiveness and quality level with which its services. The aim of this paper is to describe the method adopted by the Lombardy Region to create a governance tool for the healthcare system that would be applied within hospitals to create value at financial-economic level, to achieve continuous quality improvement and to increase patient/customer satisfaction levels. Summary: This work describes the experience realized in the period 2016 - 2018 in the firms actives in the Port of Triest for promoting good models of organization and management in the safety. The approach is based not only in the "construction" of the instruments of AUDIT, but started from the acquisition of the knowledge of employers and workers. This allowed to weigh the results of the AUDIT and create the consciousness of risks in all company components. In seventeen firms working in the Port were used instrumentals of self-valuation in the organization of safety on work from the employers. Were picked 360 questionnaires of the perception of risks from workers and in eight firms was completed the experiment of the procedure of AUDIT. After some time the inspection in six firms permitted to verify that they gained a correct model of organization and management of safety. Behavioral and psychiatric symptoms (BPSD), common in persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD), are known to be associated with caregiver burdening. Therefore, early recognition of BPSD is necessary to protect these caregivers. The aim of this validation study was to test the internal consistency, test-retest reliability and concurrent validity of an Italian translation of the revised memory and behavior problems checklist (RMBPC), as it demonstrated high plasticity in timely measuring the day-to-day BPSD changes that challenge caregivers. A cohort of 355 dyads composed of AD subjects and their principal caregivers were assessed with the Italian version of RMPBC capitalizing on the information provided by the latter ones. The results were compared with the ones from other predictors (i.e., the Zarit Burben Interview, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the EurQuality of Life, the neuropsychiatric symptoms). The validity and stability of the It-RMBPC resulted being solid and concurrent reliability resulted having higher correlations with principal caregiver anxiety level. Future studies on the role of BPSD in fostering anxiety in AD principal caregivers are merited.

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common in the prodromal stage of dementia and can precede the onset of cognitive impairment. The presence of NPS in cognitively normal patients or in patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is associated with an increased risk of progression along the neurodegenerative process. The need to identify, in the early stages of the disease, the population at risk of cognitive decline has led to the formulation of the concept of Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI). This neurobehavioral syndrome is characterized by late-onset sustained psychiatric symptoms, in patients without cognitive deficits or in those with MCI, identifying a condition associated with an increased probability of conversion into dementia. MBI represents the neurobehavioral axis of pre-dementia risk states, as a complement to the neurocognitive axis of MCI. For some, MBI may be the initial manifestation of neurodegenerative disease, observed before cognitive impairment is apparent. The Mild Behavioral Impairment-Checklist (MBI-C) was developed on the basis of the MBI diagnostic criteria, established by the International Society to Advance Alzheimer's Research and Treatment (ISTAART). The MBI-C allows to identify, in a standardized way, patients with MBI and to follow the course of their neurodegenerative disease. This article describes the creation of the MBI-C scale and presents its Italian version.

Background: The Non-Communicating Children Pain Check List-Revised (NCCPC-R) is a clinical assessment tool used to assess and measure pain in children aged 3 to 18 years, with mental and intellectual disabilities, incapable to speak., Aim: Aim of our study was to test the validity and reliability of the Italian version of the NCCPC-R in children with cognitive impairment, in order to obtain a valid tool for pain assessment in these children., Design: Prospective observational study., Setting: Pediatric Outpatient of Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine Department, and Pediatrics, Child Neurology and Psychiatry Department, Sapienza University, Rome., Population: 55 non-communicating children, with severe intellectual disability, aged 3-18 years., Methods: The guidelines for "translation, adaptation, and validation of instruments or scales for cross-cultural healthcare research" were used to translate the scale, which was administered by the parents/caregivers twice for 2 consecutive days, in association with NRS (Numerical Rating Scale). The reliability of the scale was evaluated using the intra and inter-class correlation coefficient (ICCs); Cronbach alpha coefficient was used to test the internal validity of the scale; "Receiver Operating Characteristic" (ROC) curves were used to compare pain-free scores with pain scores, determining threshold scores; Pearson correlation between NCCPC-R and NRS values was measured., Results: The InterCC between the first and the second interviewer at T0 was 0,97, the IntraCC of the first interviewer at T0-T1 was 0,89, showing a high correlation; the Cronbach alpha coefficient at T0 was 0,97, showing a high scale's validity. Pearson correlation between NRS and NCCPC-R values at T0 was 0,54 showing a medium level of agreement (P<0,0001). AUC (area under the curve) obtained by ROC curve at T0 was 0,807 (P=0,001), with sensitivity 95,2 and specificity 55,6, while a T1 AUC was 0,814 (P<0,001), with sensitivity 86,49, specificity 78,57., Conclusions: The Italian version of NCCPC-R scale could be used to asses pain in non-communicating patients with mental and intellectual disabilities, showing a good correlation when compared to the NRS., Clinical Rehabilitation Impact: The use of NCCPC-R scale in daily life made parents/caregivers able to discriminate the presence/absence of pain in non-communicating children, based on the scores obtained with the questionnaire.

Background: To establish the concordant validity of the "Checklist per la Valutazione dell'Esordio Psicotico" (CVEP) in an Italian help-seeking population. The CVEP is the Italian adaptation of the "early detection Primary Care Checklist," a 20-item tool specifically designed to assist primary care practitioners in identifying young people in the early stages of psychosis., Methods: The checklist was completed by the referring practitioners of 168 young people referred to the "Reggio Emilia At Risk Mental States" Project, an early detection infrastructure developed under the aegis of the Regional Project on Early Detection of Psychosis in the Reggio Emilia Department of Mental Health. The concordant validity of the CVEP was established by comparing screen results with the outcome of the "Comprehensive Assessment of At Risk Mental States" (CAARMS), a gold standard assessment for identifying young people who may be at risk of developing psychosis., Results: The simple checklist as originally conceived had excellent sensitivity (98%), but lower specificity (58%). Using only a CVEP total score of 20 or above as cut-off, the tool showed a slightly lower sensitivity (93%) with a substantial improvement in specificity (87%). Simple cross-tabulations of the individual CVEP item scores against CAARMS outcome to identify the more discriminant item in terms of sensitivity and specificity were carried out., Conclusions: In comparison to other, much longer, screening tools, the CVEP performed well to identify young people in the early stages of psychosis. Background: The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has identified some risk factors for the occurrence of side effects linked to energy drinks (EDs) consumption by young people. EDs consumption has been evaluated in a sample of students in Italy together with some aspects of their lifestyle., Methods: The survey was performed in two high schools from September 2016 to June 2017. 583 students between 14 to 18 years were recruited and a standard questionnaire (EFSA checklist) was used to collect information on responders characteristics, beverages consumption, EDs with alcohol, and EDs and sports., Results: Despite 350 out of 583 responders (60%) consumed EDs, only 146 out of 583 (25%) were EDs-alcohol consumers. Moreover, 208 out of 379 (55%) of all physically active adolescents reported frequent EDs consumption before sport trainings., Conclusions: Study results highlight the need for primary prevention measures in communication campaigns and training delivered by school to limit potential health threats related to excess of EDs consumption.

Background: In cardiac surgical patients little is known about different phenotypes of delirium and how the symptoms fluctuate over time., Objectives: Evaluate risk factors, incidence, fluctuations, phenotypic characteristics and impact on patients' outcomes of delirium., Methods: Prospective longitudinal study. In postoperative intensive care unit 199 patient were assessed three-times a day through an adapted versions of the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist., Results: Delirium and subsyndromal delirium incidence were 30.7% and 31.2%, respectively. Delirium manifested mostly in the hypoactive form and showed a fluctuating trend for several days. Atrial fibrillation, benzodiazepine/opioids dosages, hearing impairment, extracorporeal circulation length, SAPS-II and mean arterial pressure were independent predictors for delirium. Delirium was a statistically significant predictor of chemical/physical restraint use and hospital length of stay., Conclusions: Given the fluctuating and phenotypic characteristics, delirium screening should be a systematic/intentional activity. Background: Health claims (HC) are those statements on food labels that state, suggest, or imply that a relationship exists between a food category, a food product, or one of its constituents, and health of consumer. The European legislation on the use of HC aims to encourage responsible consumption by people. The aim of this study is to assess the adherence of HC to EU norms in foodstuffs sold in the large-scale retail distribution in Florence., Methods: Two independent researchers have separately selected and assessed the foodstuffs with HC sold in at least two of four supermarkets identified randomly in Florence. Each selected product was assessed by a checklist with seven macro-criteria, extrapolated from the 'Specific Conditions' and 'Restrictions of Use' provided by EU regulations, rating the adherence of the chosen foods to the legislation., Results: Seventy-seven products were assessed. Only a limited number of products show full compliance to all the criteria. Specifically, noncompliance related to Criterion 3 ("the amount of the food and pattern of consumption required to obtain the claimed beneficial effect are reported") is the most significant: the absence of indications about the maximum amount to be consumed or the modality of consumption could represent a risk of overconsumption and, consequently, a risk for health., Conclusion: According to the results, we hypothesize a lack of knowledge of the EU norms on the part of the manufacturer. A great deal of work is still to be done to assess and manage these products in the right way, as well as to communicate the right messages to the consumers.

Background: This study evaluated the validity and reliability of the Italian version of the Non-Communicating Children's Pain Checklist-Postoperative version (I-NCCPC-PV)., Methods: The original NCCPC-PV version was translated into Italian following the guidelines for "the translation, adaptation, and validation of instruments or scales for cross-cultural healthcare research". We tested the Italian NCCPC-PV version (I-NCCPC-PV) in 40 children (3-18 years of age) with severe to profound Intellectual Disability and no verbal communication. Each child's behavior was observed by a parent or caregiver and by an external observer in a quiet situation and a painful one. They independently assessed the child's level of pain using the translated Italian version of the NCCPCPV (I-NCCPC-PV)., Results: The results from 80 assessments showed that children's behavioral signs differed significantly between painful and calm situations (p < 0.001). The inter-rater reliability was poor in a quiet condition (ICC 0.62) and fair in a painful situation (ICC 0.77). The inter-rater agreement was good in both calm and painful conditions (72.50% and 77.50% respectively)., Conclusion: The Italian version of the NCCPC-PV (I-NCCPC-PV) can be used for pain assessment in children with Intellectual Disability who lack verbal communication.

Lean Management and Six Sigma are nowadays applied not only to the manufacturing industry but also to service industry and public administration. The manifold variables affecting the Health Care system minimize the effect of a narrow Lean intervention. Therefore, this paper aims to discuss a comprehensive, system-based approach to achieve a factual holistic optimization of patient flows. This paper debates the efficacy of Lean principles applied to the optimization of patient flows and related activities, structures, and resources, developing a theoretical framework based on the principles of the Axiomatic Design. The demand for patient-oriented and efficient health services leads to use these methodologies to improve hospital processes. In the framework, patients with similar characteristics are clustered in families to achieve homogeneous flows through the value stream. An optimization checklist is outlined as the result of the mapping between Functional Requirements and Design Parameters, with the right sequence of the steps to optimize the patient flow according to the principles of Axiomatic Design. The Axiomatic Design-based top-down implementation of Health Care evidence, according to Lean principles, results in a holistic optimization of hospital patient flows, by reducing the complexity of the system.

In Italy, one of the main agricultural crops is represented by the cultivation of olive trees. Olive cultivation characterizes the Italian agricultural landscape and national agricultural economics. Italy is the world's second largest producer of olive oil. Because olive cultivation requires the largest labor force in southern Italy, the aim of this research was to assess the risk of biomechanical overload of the workers' upper limbs. The objective, therefore, was to determine the level of risk that workers are exposed to in each phase of the production process. In Calabria, the second most important region in Italy for both the production of olive oil and cultivated area, there are 113,907 olive farms (83% of all farms) and 250,000 workers. To evaluate the risk of repetitive movements, all of the work tasks performed by workers on 100 farms in Calabria were analyzed. A total of 430 workers were interviewed over the four-year research period. To evaluate the level of exposure to repetitive movements, the OCRA (occupational repetitive actions) checklist was adopted. This checklist was the primary analytical tool during the preliminary risk assessment and in a given working situation. The analysis suggested by the OCRA checklist starts with pre-assigned scores (increasing in value with intensification of risk) for each of four main risk factors and additional factors. Between 2010 and 2013, surveys were conducted using the OCRA checklist with the aim of verifying musculoskeletal risks. The results obtained from the study of 430 workers allowed us to identify the level of exposure to risk. This analysis was conducted in the workplace to examine in detail the repetitive movements performed by the workers. The research was divided into two phases: first to provide preliminary information on the different tasks performed in olive growing, and second to assign a percentage to each task of the total hours worked in a year. Based on the results, this method could well become a tool for implementing prevention measures for all workers involved in farming, not just those in olive production. Exposure to work-related musculoskeletal risks (extreme posture, repetition, high muscle loads) appears to be significant for workers in olive production. In the cultivation of olive trees, many tasks require prolonged and intense physical efforts that can increase risk. The most problematic work tasks were pruning and harvesting, while fertilization showed the lowest risk. The survey showed the need for a suitable study of olive growing to adapt prevention measures to specific aspects of agriculture as compared to other employment sectors.

Background: An in-depth assessment of work-related stress was conducted in a major national telecommunications company undergoing major changes. The assessment was made on three homogeneous groups of workers and covered a large representative sample of the corresponding populations., Objectives: To identify the main sources of stress for the three populations of workers, stimulate a discussion on the possible corrective actions, and assess the impact of the on-going organizational changes on workers' health., Methods: The assessment started with an analysis of the objective stress indicators listed in the INAIL (National Insurance Institute for Occupational Diseases and Accidents) Checklist. This was followed by a combination of qualitative and quantitative investigations on work context and tasks and on the subjective perceptions of workers, which were carried out by using: semi-structured interviews with management, field observations of work tasks, focus groups and questionnaires (GHQ-12, HSE Indicator Tool, ad-hoc questionnaire)., Results: The assessment allowed identification of the critical areas to be addressed with specific interventions: relationship with the company, work performance, work organization, and equipment., Conclusions: the investigation allowed to identification of specific practical actions (improvement of technological tools; professional development through training courses) as well as strategic actions ( re-establish relationship of trust with the company) so as to mitigate the workers' level of stress. Analysis of the results also showed that the three targeted populations differed in the degree of acceptance and understanding of the organizational changes.

Background: The ASL1 workplace prevention and safety service in Abruzzo has been conducting workplace inspections on agricultural and livestock farms in the province of L'Aquila since 2011, mainly in the areas of Avezzano, Sulmona and L'Aquila. The agricultural sector in Abruzzo is characterized by high rates of accidents and the ratio of fatal injuries/total injuries is higher than the industry and services sector., Objectives: To evaluate the presence or absence of safety devices , i.e. compliance or otherwise with regulations for tractors, and of any variable factor that could be associated with the safety of the vehicle., Methods: Between 2011 and 2013, 98 farms in the province of L'Aquila were inspected. The data resulting from the inspections was collected by the use of a checklist. An univariate logistic regression analysis was conducted in which the vehicles that complied with regulations were considered as the dependant variable, and the age of the tractor owner, the acres of worked land and the type of farm were considered as explanatory variables. Statistical elaboration was carried out using the Stata 12 programme., Results: Out of a total of 298 tractors that were checked, 64.8% did not comply with regulations due to absence or unsuitability of one or more safety devices such as: a protective device in case of overturning; retention system of the driver; mounting and dismounting from the vehicle; protection of moving parts and hot parts; PTO (Power Take Off) protection device. A significant association between non-compliance of vehicles and the age of the owner and acres worked was observed, whereas no statistical significance was observed for the association with the farm type variable., Conclusion: Our study showed that farms where the owner's age is between 50 and 64 years and where more acres of land are worked are those where the agricultural or forestry tractors had lower levels of compliance with regulations.

Introduction: Surgical site infections (SSIs) in orthopaedic surgery are a demanding complication for the patient and in terms of economics. Many guidelines (GLs) are available on antibiotic prophylaxis as an effective preventive measure; however, these GLs are often ignored in practice. A surveillance study of SSIs in arthroplasty, promoted by the Italian Study Group of Hospital Hygiene of the Italian Society of Public Health (SitI), showed a high percentage of non-adherence to GLs on antibiotic prophylaxis., Objectives: The purpose of this study was to review the existing GLs, share them within the hospital and then monitor their implementation., Materials and Methods: Information and training are considered to be great tools for implementation and sharing of GLs, which leads to significant improvements in clinical practice. A multidisciplinary team comprising infectious disease specialists, orthopaedic surgeons, nurse epidemiologists and public health specialists was established at the G. Pini Hospital in Milan to revise GLs, and to organise educational events for their implementation, sharing and dissemination. A checklist was devised for monitoring purposes., Results: GLs were presented to orthopaedic surgeons and nurse coordinators during two educational events. Meetings were organised in each unit to present the results of the surveillance of SSIs in arthroplasty and to discuss the reasons why the prophylaxis regimens adopted were not consistent with GLs. It was emphasised that the most important issue, on which there is consensus in the scientific literature, was related to the duration of prophylaxis beyond 24h. The review process for GLs was presented and pocket-sized GLs were given to surgeons. The importance of documenting on medical record any deviations from the GLs was emphasised., Conclusions: Any changes in behaviour in clinical practice must be monitored and evaluated regularly. The monitoring of GLs in terms of correct choice of drug, timing of administration and duration of prophylaxis is made using a special checklist on a representative sample of medical records., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. The effectiveness of the World Health Organization's (WHO) surgical safety checklist (SSCL) in decreasing mortality and morbidity of surgical procedures was firstly suggested in 2009; the checklist is now strongly recommended internationally for adoption as a highly effective yet economically simple intervention. However, since 2009 several published studies have reported inconsistent results, besides many issues concerning local implementation. Drawing on the recently published experience carried out in Ontario, a concise overview of the current debate is presented, with some comments on implications for the national healthcare system in Italy. More generally, the need to include the implementation of the SSCL in a larger effort addressing safety in surgery is pointed out.

Background: In 2010, Italian regulatory guidelines have been issued consisting of a stepwise procedure for the assessment and management of work-related stress. However, research that empirically examines whether this procedure proves effective in accurately identifying critical psychosocial factors and informing risk management is scarce., Objectives: To examine the differential sensitivity of two approaches to risk assessment, the first based on objective instruments only, the second consisting of an integrated approach combining different methods and theoretical perspectives., Methods: We examined a sample of 306 healthcare employees in a large-size hospital in northern Italy, using a series of tools, both quantitative (an observational checklist and the HSE-IT and MOHQ questionnaires) and qualitative (Focus Groups). Through instrument-specific reference values, we then compared risk profiles between different homogeneous groups within the institution., Results: The psychosocial work environment resulted to be far more positive when adopting the first compared to the second approach to risk assessment. The latter approach was also more sensitive in detecting between-groups differences in risk profiles. Furthermore, the Focus Groups returned a more context-specific picture of the psychosocial work environment. Finally, going beyond the emphasis on negative working conditions inherent in the other quantitative instruments, the MOHQ allowed for also identifying health-promoting factors in need for improvement., Conclusions: Although more research is needed to confirm our findings, the present study suggests that using an integrated approach to assess the psychosocial work environment may be the most effective way to accurately identify risk factors and support the management process.
