The paper presents and discusses data from a qualitative study carried out in April and May 2020 with families under lockdown in Italy (N = 319) and Greece (N = 297). The research examined how confinement and restrictions on movement had impacted families' everyday geographies (with a particular focus on 'liminal' places located between homes and public spaces, such as balconies, hallways, courtyards, backyards), as well as parents' most valued public spaces and propensity (and modes) to use them. Data were analysed following a top-down thematic approach. The results suggest that restricted access to public spaces (as enforced during the Greek and Italian lockdowns) may influence the signification of domestic places, prompt remodulation of the dialectic between public and private spheres, and bring to light the social value of families' (parents and children's) experiences in public spaces. Background and Aim: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are recognized as valuable measures in the clinical setting. In 2018 we developed the Italian version of the "Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia-Self Notion and Perception Questionnaire" (HSP-SNAP), a disease-specific questionnaire that collects personal perception on motor symptoms related to HSP such as stiffness, weakness, imbalance, reduced endurance, fatigue and pain. In this study our primary aim was to assess the questionnaire validity and reliability. Our secondary aim was to characterize the symptoms "perceived" by patients with HSP and compare them with those "perceived" by age-matched healthy subjects., Methods: The 12-item HSP-SNAP questionnaire was submitted to 20 external judges for comprehensibility and to 15 external judges for content validity assessment. We recruited 40 subjects with HSP and asked them to fill the questionnaire twice for test-retest procedure. They also completed the Medical Outcome Survey Short Form (SF-36) and were evaluated by the Spastic Paraplegia Rating Scale and the Six-Minute Walk Test. We also recruited 44 healthy subjects who completed the HSP-SNAP once to test score variability., Results: The HSP-SNAP content validity index was high (0.8±0.1) and the test-retest analysis showed high reliability (ICC = 0.94). The mean HSP-SNAP score (score range 0-48) of the HSP group was 22.2±7.8, which was significantly lower than healthy subjects (43.1±6.3). The most commonly perceived symptom was stiffness, followed by weakness and imbalance., Conclusion: Although HSP-SNAP does not investigate non-motor symptoms and we validated only its Italian version, it showed good validity and reliability and it could be used in combination with other objective outcome measures for clinical purposes or as endpoints for future clinical rehabilitation studies., Trial Registration: Trial Registration: ClinicalTrial.gov, NCT04256681. Background: Patients with cerebellar malformations exhibit not only movement problems, but also important deficits in social cognition. Thus, rehabilitation approaches should not only involve the recovery of motor function but also of higher-order abilities such as processing of social stimuli. In keeping with the general role of the cerebellum in anticipating and predicting events, we used a VR-based rehabilitation system to implement a social cognition intensive training specifically tailored to improve predictive abilities in social scenarios (VR-Spirit)., Methods/design: The study is an interventional randomised controlled trial that aims to recruit 42 children, adolescents and young adults with congenital cerebellar malformations, randomly allocated to the experimental group or the active control group. The experimental group is administered the VR-Spirit, requiring the participants to compete with different avatars in the reaching of recreational equipment and implicitly prompting them to form expectations about their playing preference. The active control group participates in a VR-training with standard games currently adopted for motor rehabilitation. Both trainings are composed by eight 45-min sessions and are administered in the GRAIL VR laboratory (Motekforce Link, Netherlands), an integrated platform that allows patients to move in natural and attractive VR environments. An evaluation session in VR with the same paradigm used in the VR-Spirit but implemented in a different scenario is administered at the beginning (T0) of the two trainings (T1) and at the end (T2). Moreover, a battery of neurocognitive tests spanning different domains is administered to all participants at T0, T2 and in a follow-up session after 2 months from the end of the two trainings (T3)., Discussion: This study offers a novel approach for rehabilitation based on specific neural mechanisms of the cerebellum. We aim to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of a new, intensive, social cognition training in a sample of Italian patients aged 7-25 years with congenital cerebellar malformations. We expect that VR-Spirit could enhance social prediction ability and indirectly improve cognitive performance in diverse domains. Moreover, through the comparison with a VR-active control training we aim to verify the specificity of VR-Spirit in improving social perception skills., Trial Registration: ISRCTN, ID: ISRCTN 22332873. Clerical errors occurring during specimen collection, issue and transfusion of blood are the most common cause of AB0 incompatible transfusions. 40-50% of the transfusion fatalities result from errors in properly identifying the patient or the blood components. The frequency and type of errors observed, despite the implementation of measures to prevent them, suggests that errors are inevitable unless major changes in procedures are adopted. A fail-safe system, which physically prevents the possibility of error, was adopted in January 1993 and concurrently a quality improvement program was implemented to monitor any transfusion errors. Up to December 1994, 10,995 blood units (5,057 autologous and 5,938 allogeneic) were transfused to 3,231 patients. Seventy-one methodological errors(1/155 units) were observed, half of which were concentrated during the first 4 months of introducing the system. However the system detected and avoided four potentially fatal errors (1/2,748 units). Two cases involved the interchanging of recipient sample tubes, 1 case was due to patient misidentification and the other involved misidentification of blood units. In conclusion the system is effective in detecting otherwise undiscovered errors in transfusion practice and can prevent potential transfusion-associated fatalities caused by misidentification of blood units or recipients.

Unlabelled: Human error in patient or specimen identification due to fatigue, stress and lack of attention by technologists, nurses, interns, and physicians, can cause routinely safety procedures to be circumvented. Clerical errors may occur during the specimen collection, the issue of blood unit and the transfusion of blood. The introduction in an increasing number of hospital of preoperative autologous blood donation programs further increases the chance of error, because a single patient can predeposit multiple units of blood. In this cases there is a greater commitment not only to transfuse any blood unit that is ABO compatible but to transfuse the specific units the patient previously donated for his own use. Human error has been recognized as a significant cause of transfusion-associated fatalities. The persistence of the frequency and type of errors observed in spite of extensive efforts to eradicate them, suggests that errors are inevitable as long as large number of repetitive procedures are performed unless major system changes are adopted. A system (Bloodloc System) that physically prevents the possibility of error was adopted since January 1993 and cuncurrently a quality improvement program (QI) was implemented specifically designed to monitor: 1. the absence of the code on the blood samples, 2. the blood bank error in setting the Bloodloc, 3. the misidentification of blood samples, 4. any attempt to transfuse the wrong blood unit, 5. any attempt to transfuse, the wrong patients., Results: 4895 blood units (2469 autologous and 2426 allogeneic units) were transfused to 1478 patients (849 predeposited an average of 3.3 +/- 2.0 units). The methodological errors (absence of three-letter code on the patient's specimen tube, wrong transcription of the code on the blood sample, wrong setting of the Bloodloc in the blood bank)--41 cases--were limited at the first four months of implementation of the system. In the same period however have been reported 3 potentially fatal errors which have been avoided by the Bloodloc. Two cases of misidentification of blood samples at the moment of the specimen collection, and one attempt to transfuse the wrong units to the wrong patients., Conclusions: The Bloodloc system is effective in preventing potential transfusion-associated fatalities caused by units or recipients misidentification.
