Mineralogical and geochemical studies were undertaken in the volcanic area of Biancavilla (Catania, Italy) with the aim of explaining the nature of the high As and F contents of the area's rocks. As and F contents in soils and groundwater were also investigated. The metasomatised benmoreite lavas show fluorine and arsenic concentrations up to about 3,000 and 1,000 mg/kg, respectively. Mineralogical analyses show that fluorine occurs mostly in fluoro-edenite and apatite-(CaF) crystals, both abundantly present in the altered rocks, while As is exclusively attributed to the apatite-(CaF) crystals. Specifically, arsenic was observed only at the borders of these apatite crystals. Leaching tests and sequential extraction procedures were carried out to evaluate the potential remobilisation of As and F by the mineral phases and the eventual risks induced by their spreading. The results of the leaching tests suggest that As is almost totally associated with the 'easily reducible' fraction and that it is released by the preferential dissolution of the arsenic enriched rims of apatite-(CaF) crystals. In soils, As concentration is relatively low (about 15 mg/kg, on average), while F ranges from 236 to 683 mg/kg. The underground waters supplying the town of Biancavilla show As and F contents lower than the allowed limits for drinking water, (As:10 μg/L, F:1-1.5 mg/L). The limited distribution of these rocks and the relatively limited mobilisation by the minerals both contribute to maintain low As and F values, in soils and groundwaters, despite the high values in metasomatised lava samples. Abstract: Sardinia is typically seismically quiescent, displaying an almost complete lack of historical earthquakes and instrumentally recorded seismicity. This evidence may be in agreement with the presence of a ductile layer in the northern sector of the island, as suggested by the He isotopic signature in fluids rising to the surface through quiescent fault systems. The fault systems have been found to be “segmented” and therefore isolated in fluid circulation. The study of fluid behaviour along fault systems becomes strategically important when applied to solve some geological risk assessments such as Rn-indoor, or to define geological structures like potential CO2 storage sites. Both of these have been recently requested by the exploitation in Italy of the Euratom Directive and the evolution of the KyotoProtocol policy. Four water-dominated hydrothermal areas of Sardinia, located along regional fault systems, were considered: Campidano Graben, Tirso Valley, Logudoro and Casteldoria. A fluid geochemical survey was carried out taking into account physical–chemical and environmental parameters, major elements within gaseous and liquid phases, a few minor and trace elements, selected isotope ratios (2H, 18O, 13C, 3He/4He), 222Rn concentration, and some dissolved gases. Two different fluids have been recognised as regards both water chemistry and dissolved gases: (i) CO2-rich gases, poor in He and Rn, with a relatively high 3He/4He ratio (up to R/Ra=2.32), associated with Na–HCO3–(Cl) thermal and cold groundwater; (ii) gases rich in He and N2, poor in CO2 and Rn, with a low 3He/4He ratio, associated with alkaline thermal and cold waters. The distribution of these two groups of fluids characterises the Sardinian tectonic systems. In fact, gas fluxes are not homogeneous, being mainly related to the different fault segments and to the areas where Quaternary basalts crop out. The underground geochemical evolution of the Sardinian fluids, as a function of the geological and tectonic systems, provides some suggestions for solving one of the most important problems: CO2 geological sequestration. In order to reduce the CO2 excess produced by human activity, the best geological disposal sites are reservoirs with low hydraulic conductivity, sealed to fluid movement, or aquifers characterised by maximum pH buffering capacity of their mineralogical matrix. Platinum concentrations in topsoil samples collected in 1992 (48) and in 2001 (16) from the urban area of Rome have been determined by ICP–MS. Concentrations in 47 soil samples collected in 1992 from natural sites of Latium (an area around Rome) have been determined for a first assessment of natural background levels. The Pt concentrations in Rome urban soils collected in 1992 range from 0.8 to 6.3 ng/g (X¯=3.8±1.0) overlapping the concentration range of natural soils from Latium (X¯=3.1±2.1 ng/g). No significant correlation has generally been found between Pt contents in the ‘natural’ soils and related bedrock or major pedogenetic parameters. These results suggest that there is no evidence of Pt pollution in Rome urban soils at that time, because the massive use of the automobile catalytic converter has only just started. Higher (up to six times more) Pt concentrations, than those measured in the 1992 samples, have been measured, in some cases, in Rome urban soils collected in 2001, suggesting a possible start of Pt accumulation because of the large-scale use in the last decade of automobile catalytic converters. At the same time, a clear decrease of lead levels in Rome urban soils with respect to the levels measured in 1992 has been observed, paralleling the decreasing number of lead gasoline-fuelled cars. Here we present one of the first systematic studies for defining background levels of Pt in Italian natural soils, thus allowing for monitoring, in the future, should any possible Pt pollution caused by the use of automobile catalytic converter, especially in urban soils, occur. Abstract: The mock-up of the EU Test Blanket Module (TBM) based on the Helium-Cooled Lithium-Lead (HCLL) concept was irradiated at Frascatti, Italy, in order to assess the uncertainty in the tritium production rate (TPR) due to the uncertainty in the nuclear data and the computational methods. The benchmark should contribute also to the validation of the new nuclear cross-section and covariance data evaluations. This paper presents the final design of the benchmark and the analysis using the deterministic transport, sensitivity and uncertainty code system. The analysis includes the calculation of the tritium production rate (TPR) in LiPb layers and the neutron reaction rates, which were measured in the experimental set-up. The SUSD3D cross-section sensitivity and uncertainty code together with the 2D/3D deterministic transport code package DOORS is used for the analysis of the experiment. Based on the sensitivity analyses the most important nuclear reactions and energy ranges in the particular reaction rate measurements are identified, as well as the corresponding uncertainties. We report on a new solid state dosimeter based on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) single crystal diamond fabricated at Roma "Tor Vergata" University laboratories. The dosimeter has been specifically designed for direct neutron dose measurements in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). The response to thermal neutrons of the proposed diamond dosimeter is directly due to (10)B and, therefore, the dosimeter response is directly proportional to the boron absorbed doses in BNCT. Two single crystal diamond detectors are fabricated in a p-type/intrinsic/metal configuration and are sandwiched together with a boron containing layer in between the metallic contacts (see Fig.1). Neutron irradiations were performed at the Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) using the 2.5 MeV neutrons produced through the D(d,n)(3)He fusion reaction. Thermal neutrons were then produced by slowing down the 2.5 MeV neutrons using a cylindrical polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) moderator. The diamond dosimeter was placed in the center of the moderator. The products of (10)B(n,alpha)Li nuclear reaction were collected simultaneously giving rise to a single peak. Stable performance, high reproducibility, high efficiency and good linearity were observed.

In the framework of collaboration between the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona and the INFN Frascati National Laboratories, an experimental Bonner Sphere neutron spectrometry exercise has been performed in the 2.5 MeV and 14.2 MeV quasi monoenergetic neutron beams of the ENEA Fast Neutron Generator. The neutron spectra at given distances from the accelerator target have been determined, taking advantage of the new unfolding FRUIT code, recently developed by the LNF group. The results show a good coherence between the two spectrometers, and between the measured and simulated data.
