Human activity along the Amalfi coastline in Italy has been tied to the sea for millennia – for sustenance, migration, trade, warfare, and leisure. As a result, this region has an equally rich and extensive maritime cultural landscape composed of tangible and intangible elements. In 2016, a multi-disciplinary project began efforts to model and to understand changes within this landscape, and this essay presents the preliminary results of our first three seasons of work. Some efforts, such as the documentation of maritime cultural heritage in local museums, archival work, and geomorphological research proceeded smoothly. Unexpectedly, however, little material from the pre-modern era was found under water, adding questions to this study that future work in the Marine Protected Area west of Positano may answer. The paper presents the map of intrinsic groundwater vulnerability of the Isonzo/Soča High Plain, which is located between the Collio Hills and the Classical Karst Region and holds an aquifer shared between Italy and Slovenia. The map, produced at a scale of 1:25,000 and printed in A0 format, was obtained by means of the SINTACS method and shows the intrinsic vulnerability of the aquifer in terms of seven vulnerability classes, from extremely high to low. It is accompanied by four supplementary sketches that illustrate the geological framework, the bedrock top surface, the groundwater flow paths, the Hazard Index map and three diagrams that summarize the percentages of vulnerability classes and of Hazard Index classes of the study area. Background: Although sentinel node biopsy (SNB) is becoming the standard approach for axillary staging in patients with small breast cancer, criteria for patient selection and some technical aspects of the procedure have yet to be clearly defined. The aim of the present survey was therefore to investigate the way in which SNB is used by general surgeons working in the Veneto region, Italy. Methods: A 29-item questionnaire regarding various aspects of SNB practice was mailed to surgeons in charge of breast surgery in all the 56 surgical centres of the region. Results: The rate of response to the questionnaire was 82.1% (n = 46); 69.6% (n = 32) of the respondents routinely perform SNB in their clinical practice. Most of the interviewed surgeons (93.5%) expressed the belief that the acceptable false negative rate should be ≤5%. However, among the surgeons who perform SNB, only 34.4% performed more than 20 SNB during the learning phase. Indications are limited to tumours of ≤1 cm by 31.2% (n = 10) of respondents, ≤2 cm by 46.9% (n = 15) and ≤3 cm by 21.9% (n = 7). Almost all respondents (93.7%) agreed that a clinically positive axilla is a contraindication to SNB, while opinions differed widely concerning other potential contraindications. In most of the centres considered, SN identification is undertaken on the day before surgery using a subdermal injection of 30-50 MBq of 99mTc-albumin-nanocolloid followed by lymphoscintigraphy. Conclusions: SNB is currently performed in the majority of hospitals in the Veneto region. However, the training phase and criteria used for patient selection differ from centre to centre. Abstract: The dramatic climatic and environmental changes that occurred at the end of the last glaciation led to the formation of landforms (e.g., moraines, fluvial ridges, and alluvial terraces) that strongly characterize the landscape in the alluvial plains facing the Alps. This also occurred with the Tagliamento glacier, which built a large LGM moraine amphitheatre in the piedmont sector of the southeastern Alps and fed fluvioglacial systems in the Friulian plain (NE Italy). The Cormor stream was one of the main glacial outwashes and formed an alluvial megafan during the peak of the LGM. At the decline of the LGM, the active belt narrowed and was subsequently abandoned. Since the Lateglacial the Cormor system has been an intermittent stream with limited activity. This sequence of events led to the preservation of large LGM surfaces, which enables their investigation, along with correlatable moraine ridges. The study of megafan depositional phases allows us to precisely constrain the chronology of glacial withdrawal at the end of the LGM, which is difficult in large sectors of the southern Alps. The geomorphological and geological study of the Cormor megafan was realized through the use of remote sensing, DEM analysis, field survey, stratigraphic boreholes, and radiocarbon dating. During the peak glaciation of the LGM, the Cormor experienced widespread aggradation with gravel deposition up to 15–25km from the megafan apex, while the distal sector was dominated by fine-grained sediments. At the end of the LGM the Cormor stream incised the apical portion of its megafan, funnelling the sedimentary discharge and experiencing a limited aggradation in the distal sector with the formation of a progradational lobe. This deposition buried some swampy areas, sealing peaty and organic-rich clayey horizons with 2–4m of sediments. The top of these layers is radiocarbon dated at 22.0–19.5kacal BP and indirectly constrains the chronology of several recessional moraines that formed within the glacial amphitheatre. After this depositional phase, the Cormor megafan was deactivated because of water and sediment discharge concentration of the Tagliamento catchment in the Tagliamento River. This study demonstrates the possibility to reconstruct the timing of the decline of the Tagliamento moraine amphitheatre by studying the distal portion of the related outwash plain. Moreover, new geochronological dating allows chronological comparison of the glacial withdrawal in the eastern sector of the Southern Alps with the global chronology. The results suggest that we can apply this approach also in the distal part of the other alluvial megafans formed by Alpine glacial outwashes in the central part of the Po plain where radiocarbon chronology is almost lacking. During the last recent years, in Quinis, a small village sited in the Alta Val Tagliamento valley (Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, NE Italy), the inhabitants faced with instability phenomena related to the presence of soluble rocks in the subsurface. The evaporite bedrock is mainly mantled, in fact, by high thickness deposit. This paper explains the methodological approach that we used to identify the instabilities in a very complex geo-structural environment where the urbanization limits the applicability of several investigation techniques. Different methods were used to define the bedrock morphology, to characterize the mantling deposits and to identify the processes behind. What emerged from the study is a mandatory multidisciplinary approach to characterize the subsoil, because each technique is not able individually to take to a unique result. The data collected allowed to draft a geo–hydrogeological conceptual model of the Quinis village. The lessons learned, even if with some site-specific dependency, demonstrate the importance of broad-spectrum investigations, which are essential to understand the subsurface characteristics avoiding relevant socio-economic impact and supporting an adequate future territorial planning. In NE Italy, fast-moving landslides represent a significant threat both to the population and to the built environment. In the eastern portion of the Italian Alps, rockfalls are common and are often responsible for casualties or severe damage to infrastructure. To assess rockfall susceptibility, field surveys are crucial to accurately recognize the source areas of falling rock phenomena, to quantify the volumes of unstable blocks and identify the possible block trajectories.This work takes in detailed geological and geomorphological mapping, through the identification of dislodged blocks, fractures and fallen blocks on a much-frequented limestone cliff in the Trieste Karst used as a climbing spot. Moreover, a popular tourist path (the Napoleonica) lies at the foot of the climbing cliffs.The first identification of the most hazardous sections of the climbing sites were performed starting from field surveys and aerial photo analysis, morphometric and geomechanical characterization of the rock masses together with mapping activities.The field data were implemented with the analysis of UAV (Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle) images and videos; this innovative technique allows to reach and study hard-to-reach sites with high resolution and precision. The main aim of the study is to perform a semiautomatic morphometric and geomechanical characterization of two of the most hazardous sections. This analysis allowed to extract orientation and spacing of discontinuities of the studied walls and to recognize and measure unstable or pre-dislodged blocks by means of 3D orthophotos obtained from the UAV image processing. The main output of this work is a GIS-based map that will be the starting point for future 2D and 3D simulations in order to provide a rockfall susceptibility evaluation of the study area.Moreover, the methodology used could serve as model for the study of the other popular climbing sites, where the geological, geomorphological and climatic conditions are similar. The latters in fact are the predisposing factors to slope failures and consequently could cause casualties during climbing activities.The final outputs could form an important basis for the growth of investment in tourism policies aimed at increasing the quality of local attractions.
