The article reports on the brown tree snakes introduced to the Pacific island of Guam during the 1950s. The introduction resulted to the extinction of several birds and lizard species and the economic losses from power outages that had reached $4.5 million per year. According to the experts the expansion of military presence on Guam has worried them that the associated increase could help the invasive snake establish populations on other island. Moreover, Pacific Islands Invasive Species Coordinator with the US and Fish and Wild Service in Honolulu, Hawaii, Earl Campbell, states that the impending ramp-up in shipping to and from Guam poses a big challenge to the team now trying to restrain and contain the invasive snakes.
